The Vikings Don't Blow Teams Out. . .Except the Lions.  Maybe

Detroit Lions at Minnesota Vikings, Oct 12, 2008 12:00 PM CDT

DETROIT LIONS (0-4) GAME #5 MINNESOTA VIKINGS (2-3)

@

Date: October 12, 2008 Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota
Time: 12:00 P.M. CST Stadium: Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome
TV: FOX
DirecTV Ch. 709
Know Thy Enemy: Pride of Detroit
Gonzo's Prediction: Vikings 34, Lions 13
Final Score: Vikings 12, Lions 10

Yes, folks, the short week is over, and in just about an hour and a half, the Beloved Purple will be looking to get back to .500 for the first time this season as they match up with the Detroit Lions.

Like the title says, under Brad Childress, the Vikings generally don't blow teams out. . .unless they're the Lions, particularly in the cozy confines of the Metrodome.  The Lions haven't won in Minneapolis since 1997, and last year's 42-10 thumping of the Lions was the biggest margin of victory the Vikings have had over anyone since Brad Childress became their head coach.

The Lions, on the other hand, have been awful this season.  Don't believe me?  Here are their league-wide rankings in all the major offensive and defensive categories:

Offense
Points Scored/Game - 16.5 (28th)
Total Yards/Game - 263.0 (28th)
Rushing Yards/Game - 72.2 (31st)
Passing Yards/Game - 190.8 (19th)

Defense
Points Allowed/Game - 36.8 (32nd)
Total Yards/Game - 429.0 (32nd)
Rushing Yards/Game - 180.0 (30th)
Passing Yards/Game - 249.0 (29th)

So, they're in the bottom five in the NFL in every major statistical category, except for passing yards on offense. . .and even that doesn't play much of a part going into today's game, because the Lions will NOT be starting Jon Kitna at quarterback.  They'll be starting Dan Orlovsky, from all indications, and they'll have Drew Henson backing him up.

This game could get very ugly, very quickly.  Hell, this game SHOULD get very ugly, very quickly.  Then again, we as Viking fans know better than anybody that the way that things should go on the field isn't always the way it happens.  I'm picking the Minnesota blowout today, though I almost feel bad for doing so.

Discuss the game here, folks!  With the set-up the way it is, this is by far and away the best place for in-game discussion.  I hope to see as big a gathering here today as we had on Monday night.

SKOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL VIKINGS!!!!

Woe is me

I must work from 1-8. oh well. I am taping the game and have friends sending me updates via text during the game, so all is not lost. One of them is a Lions fan too, although a very pessimistic one (except it’s probably more realistic when it comes to the Lions). Enjoy the game everyone.

In AP I trust

Beware

This is the type of game that Chilly can lose for us. Vanilla play calling. No killer instinct. He lets the hungry Lions hang around long enough to be dangerous. Then anything can happen. Get a spine Chilly. Hit them in the mouth; early and often.

I hope my “bad vibe” about this game is unfounded.

by Odin on Oct 12, 2008 10:49 AM CDT reply actions

No TV here

I’d love to stay here and discuss the game. But the only way I can follow the game is on CBS’s gametracker. Now if we had a gametracker here……………….

If you can get your hands on the ball you should be able to catch it no matter what!

by Jimemort on Oct 12, 2008 11:03 AM CDT reply actions

Against the Lions, vanilla playcalling works. I’m not worried in the least. The passing attack would have worried me, but Kitna’s not starting for them and from what I’ve read about Orvolosky his passes are pretty errant. I’m expecting at least a couple picks and numerous sacks on defense. The offense should be able to run all over them and AD gets a chance to make up yards from monday night

Watch the game on the internet for free

If the game is not on in my area I go and watch it on http://stoogetv.com/player.html
Now if the game is not on one of the channels to the left side, the moderators will post links to the other games. Now you have to be the first person to click the link for that game for it to work and you to be able to watch the game, but do not worry they will keep posting new links for the game every few moments so you can watch the game. The site runs off donations so toss them a couple if you appreciate their service.

Sid

Why is your official Daily Norseman player (Sidney Rice) out again? I think it’s good for AA to get some more time, especially against the lions, but it’s not like Sidney is a vet who doesn’t need some playing time.

Does anybody know exactly what his injury is and how long he’s expected to be out?…Also, when should we expect Madieu back?

Looks like the Vikings will be getting the ball first. Not sure how many times that’s happened this year.

Vikings punting away

And Frerotte is lmping.

Vikings down the Kluwe punt inside the 1-yard line. Nicely done by the Viking special teams.

Detroit ball, 1st and 10, 13:20 left in the first quarter.

That moves the offense back into Vikings’ territory after a decent return by Gordon.

by mjmrad on Oct 12, 2008 12:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Not a great job so far

We’re getting yards on first down, and then not picking up blitzes on second. Can’t have that continue to happen, especially if Frerotte is going to take shots like that.

6-0 Atlanta over Chicago

Atlanta is throwing underneath all over the place against the Bears, but stalled around the 30. Hopefully, they can keep the ball movement up and start finishing off some drives.

Also, I really can’t stand Urlacher. Dude seems like a huge douche. (an opinion shared by Bears fans I know.)

My stepkids love Urlacher, so I have to point out to them once in a while that he may be a great player and fun to watch, his off the field character and decision making are not to be idolized.

Hey Brad...

can we add, like a 4th play to our playbook? Run middle, pass short, and pass deep aren’t working…

Jerious Norwood with a big kickoff return, so the Vikings may not lose ground yet.

Chicago may be losing

but the Vikes need to show something today – that they are going to do something besides play around

Big 3rd down coming up...

T.O. Detroit

Another Sack, or even a turnover (imagine that!) would be HUGE!

Nice defensive game today

Minn would be rocking if not for back play calling and AP fumbles

Here's the situation

4:41 left on the clock

Lions 10, Vikings 9

Vikings have 3 time outs, Lions have 1

Vikings ball on their own 20.

It Doesn't Matter What Chicago Does

if we can’t beat Detroit.

It’s a little early for cheering for individual wins and losses.

What matters more is how teams play in those games, and what that indicates for the rest of the season.

Honestly, I would rather have a horrible season and get rid of Childress than win the division with an 8-8 record and get blown out in the first round of the playoffs.

Wouldn’t you?

Carolina and New Orleans are tough games. If the Vikes pull this one out in a sleeper week, that’ll really help matters.

Detroit's only got one time out

Slam it into the middle of the line, work the clock, and hope that Longwell can get it to the crossbar this time.

Oh, and get it into the middle of the field, too.

GOOD

Longwell gets it from 26 yards out.

And, for the first time since it was 2-0, the Vikings have the lead.

Vikings drive went 71 yards in 10 plays, taking 4:32 to accomplish.

Vikings 12, Lions 10, :09 left on the clock.

Enough time for a Detroit Hail Mary

:04 left and the Lions have no time outs. And they’re way, WAY out of Hanson’s range.

Don’t know if Orlovsky can even get it to the end zone from here.

But further bad coaching continues to hurt the Vikings.

Can anyone explain why when you are down by 2, you go for an extra point? Does that make sense to anyone?
