Daily Norseman Community Guidelines
I'm going to be saving this as a separate page here on the site, but I'm also going to post it here so that everybody has an opportunity to see it straight away.
------------
In light of some things that have happened over the past couple of days, it appears as though a few rules need to be put into place here, as well as their consequences.
Now, I love me some free speech, don't get me wrong. But I also want this site to be a community for people to be able to discuss Vikings' football and enjoy themselves. I don't want this place to turn into the kind of cesspool that places like Purple Thoughts are. With that said, the rules are going to be very few. Most of what I'm going to say here is going to be common sense, but I'm throwing them out there anyway.
1) Racist and sexist speech and/or behavior will absolutely, positively not be tolerated
This is non-negotiable. If I see a member referring to anyone in a racist or sexist manner, they're done here. There will be no warnings, there will be no "strikes," and there will be no appeals. I don't care if you're the newest member of DN or if you've been here since the beginning. There's absolutely, positively no room for that sort of behavior on this website, and there never will be.
2) No politics.
This is a football community. More specifically, a Minnesota Vikings football community. If there are political issues that directly affect the Minnesota Vikings (which will, most likely, be limited to things like stadium issues), then discuss away. If you want to discuss things like Presidential elections, tax issues, and so forth, there are approximately eleventy BILLION other internet sites that you can go to in order to get your fix.
Part of the reason that the aforementioned Purple Thoughts has turned into the cesspool that it's currently exists as is because they thought it was a good idea to put a politics forum up, and their "fair, impartial" moderators immediately decided to silence anyone that disagreed with their opinions. I've put too much time and too much effort into this site to allow that to happen here.
3) Do unto others
I like to think of my fellow Viking fans as a fairly intelligent, if slightly masochistic, group of folks. We know that some (not all) fans of other teams, particularly NFC North teams, feel the need to refer to the Beloved Purple as the "Queens" or the "Viqueens" or the "Biqueens." These people do this because they have the mental capacity of the average second-grader.
Are you smarter than a second-grader? Yes? Then don't stoop to the level of those fans when they stumble their way over here. If they're so insecure about their fandom and their loyalty to their teams that they can't even refer to our team by the proper name, then they're obviously too stupid to be rationalized with, and shall be dealt with swiftly.
By that same token, don't go to other team sites. . .particularly SBNation sites. . .and engage in that sort of stupidity. Yes, I know you're all adults and can do and say whatever you want. Just try not to embarrass Viking fans as a whole too much if you start smack talking. . .particularly if your mouth has written checks the Vikings couldn't cash in a particular week.
Fans of opposing teams, this goes for you, too. If you want to come to our house and run your mouths about the "Queens" and so forth and just generally act like an idiot, expect your stay here to be short. At the risk of sounding like a jerk, ultimately, this is my house. . .and I, personally, don't go into your house and do that crap, so don't expect me to put up with it here, either.
4) Don't Get Personal
I fully understand that there are going to be disagreements between folks on this site on many matters. . .the direction of the team, coaching decisions, players, and so forth. This will lead to debates, more spirited debates, and possibly flat-out arguments. All of those things are fine, but if they're going to happen, attack the post, not the poster. I'll give a little leeway here, because I know that things can get heated after games and so forth. Blowing off steam after the game is okay, but don't attack fellow posters. We're a community here and, ultimately, we all want to see the same thing for our team.
These guidelines can be amended as time goes on. These are just the ones I can think of at the moment. Honestly, the more I think about it, these guidelines should be more than enough. But, if warranted, there will be additions, edits, and so forth. I reserve the right to change these things at any time.

I missed it too. Kinds of wish I could have seen what the fuss was about. You know it had to be bad to force Gonzo to remind people that we are supposed to be rational adults and not ignorant know it alls.
Nah. . .nothing too terrible
We had one guy the other night referring to other people with the n-word.
And last night I had to delete the same Barack Obama endorsement twice.

Thank you!
I am a politically informed person with very strong viewpoints. But I can not tolerate politics 24/7(or even 12/3). I need breaks. Football, real and fantasy, is one such release. I come to DN for Viking info and entertainment. If I want politics, I can go thousands of other places that do not discuss football/Vikings.
As for the other points, that is just common decency. Thank you Gonzo.
ditto to the n-th degree
politically informed, politically active… Vikings are my respite from it in the Fall each election year. Thanks for taking a stand gonzo, and keeping this site the best Vikings site on the web.

Done with this site and Done with Gonzo
I haven’t been on this site long but have been on long enough to see Gonzo denegrate people who disagree with him and get very personal. Gonzo you’re telling people they can’t call the Vikings the Queens? You arrogant jerk. You are an unbelievable ass. I’ve been a huge Viking fan for many years but will not tolerate your embarrassing rules and childish attitude. DO AS I SAY NOT AS I DO HUH?

Oh, really?
I haven’t been on this site long but have been on long enough to see Gonzo denegrate people who disagree with him and get very personal.
You mean you’re not going to stick around long enough to provide examples?
And, no, our team is not called the Queens. There has never been an NFL team called the Queens. If people want to use that term, they can use it somewhere else.
Oh, well. . .can’t please everyone, I guess.

WTG, gonzo! i check about a dozen viking sites daily, and yours is – far and away – the best. it’s well written, insightful, entertaining, informative and honest. keep up the good work.
and again, thank you for your service to your fellow viking fans – AND YOUR COUNTRY.

Follow up to Gonzo - examples
At your request, here are some examples of you fine writing skills. This is only one example from your blog following the Packers loss. These are comments you made to a cheesehead. Real classy.
I’m sure you’ve noticed this already
But I’m guessing that ol’ MeesCheese here is another sparkling example of the Wisconsin State School system.
No wonder the literacy rate over there is only about 5%.

Any chance
That you’ve got no penis?
I only ask because I don’t recall you shooting your mouth off prior to yesterday. It’s nice that you think our site is special enough for you to create an account on just for the purposes of running your mouth and being stupid.
Damn. . .after further inspection, you weren’t even a member of SBNation prior to this morning. What a gutless wonder you are. Very typical of the average Green Bay fan.

Apparently, I was right
You’re an idiot.
And there’s no team called the "Queens." I think we’ve made it clear numerous times before that anybody that uses that term has all the mental acumen of a mentally handicapped third grader.

Or how about this?
Screw You, Brad Childress
Dailynorseman_tiny by Gonzo on Sep 28, 2008 3:25 PM CDT in Vikings
Two minutes left in the ball game.
No time outs.
Down by two scores.
And you punt the football away.
Good thinking, you wuss. You candy ass. You complete freaking joke of a head coach.
*yawn*
Meescheese was here strictly to troll. Proof? He joined SBNation on 9 September. He hasn’t logged into SBNation SINCE 9 September. He’s posted all of 4 comments on SBNation. . .all here. All to run his mouth and talk garbage. Kind of falls under the “we don’t do that crap at your place, so don’t do it here” category.
And the Childress stuff? Ummmmmmm. . .when I said don’t get “personal,” I meant don’t get personal with the other members of the forum. I thought that was relatively obvious.
So you have me slapping a troll, and criticizing the decisions of the head coach.
Anything. . .what’s the word I’m looking for here. . .relevant?

Oh I see - do as I say, not as I do
Rule number 3 – Are you smarter than a second-grader? Yes? Then don’t stoop to the level of those fans when they stumble their way over here. If they’re so insecure about their fandom and their loyalty to their teams that they can’t even refer to our team by the proper name, then they’re obviously too stupid to be rationalized with, and shall be dealt with swiftly
I guess the rule doesn’t apply to you though. Meescheese was spewing his opinion. I didn’t agree with him either but didn’t find it necessary to denigrate him.
It’s OK to get personal with the head coach but not posters? Any other insights into your meaning that we were supposed to know through osmosis? Your cowardly attacks on people demonstrate your lack of maturity and your inability to acknowledge your rules weren’t meant to apply to you only proves my point. So now you have examples and rather than apologize, you attempt to discard them as not inclusive. Brilliant. Now I’m done. Go ahead and add more comments. Feel free to rip on me to. Take a shot at my manhood. You seem to gravitate toward those types of comments. I won’t be back to read them anyway.
Good
Let me help you with that.

Thanks Gonzo!
Hey, if you already play by the rules and respect others, your rules aren’t that big a deal; they really only affect those that are rude and inconsiderate of others to begin with…pretty sure I won’t miss them anyway!
Keep up the great work, Gonzo, and KNOW that we all appreciate the hard work you put in to this blog!
Later dude,
Jake
The Cheerleaders back in the 60's (maybe the 70's)
were called the ‘ViQueens’ so I always get a chuckle out of folks who use that term to try and denigrate the Vikes.
Anyway you look at it though a female warrior norseman(ViQueen) is still a more of an intimidating figure than a ‘meat’ packer.

Did I say something wrong in my first post
Gonzo, I love the Vikes, and all who bleed purple on Sundays, Monday Nights once a year, and every other year on Thanksgiving. I didn’t reference any race, cause I hate racists worse than I hate a Viking loss to a NFC North opponent. Please let me know if I am the one who prompted your post.

Thanks
A friend recommended me to your site. There are many of us that no longer live in Minn. It seems I find them where ever I go. So a big Shout Out to you folks outside the state that still love the Vikes!
Thanks for setting some guidelines. It is called decency. I don’t cuss, refer to a persons race and I don’t blog on other fans sites. It is not needed.
I was in an accident. I was in a coma and left with minor memory problems. One person thought it was humorous to blast my recall of a couple players names. I guess it made him feel superior.
On the funny side, while coming out of my coma I must have heard a Vikings game being broadcast (my wife would turn th TV on for me). When I came to eventually I was confused as I could have sworn the Vikings had beaten the Giants to go to the Super Bowl. I was shocked to see the Giants playing the Pats. Now that is a wishful thinking dye-hard Vikings fan.
Look forward to your company and enjoying our Vikings. Win or lose they are our team.

Yo, AB! The greatest Vikings fan in Washington
Cool logo on your profile,221. I don’t know how to handle these bye week withdrawls. Speedlod is right. There were some glimpses of some offensive growth. I did see one series where we were 1st and 10 somewhere around midfield and it was run, run, run and punt. It was like, what are you calling? You mixed up some good play series that moved the ball and go back to that “bread and butter” nonsense. In talking with da221 we both agree that if this team can put together all areas of team play O, D, and special teams we could turn this around. When you look at many of our games had we just stepped up a notch in at least one area we could be at least 5-2. We have seen the horrors of special teams, watched the GB and Indy games go at the hands of T-Jax and aside from a couple guys, where is the smash mouth attitude on D. Where has the Darren Sharper fire gone? Gus is not great, but I admire the fact he has put a spark in the offense.
What Chilly needs to do is get this team firing on all cylinders. That is what a good coach does. Bring out the best in all phases of the game from week to week. Put the offensive production we had with the Bears with some good defensive play we have seen in some games during the season along, with at least, some good fundamental play on special teams maybe we can still grab a playoff spot. It is too late to play sporatic. During these 2 weeks these coaches better pull it ALL together or they can start getting on their computors and start updating their resumes.
Someone also asked, when is Matheu due back from his injury.
Thanks for letting me vent. Go Vikings.
