Quarterback FA's for 2009

Something's going to give in Purple Pride land next year. Gus may or may not remain starter and Tarvaris may or may not reclaim the starting job--either way the Vikings front office will sign another QB to come in (without or without Chilly's blessing, if he's still here) to provide competition.
And if we have a new HC? Well, the FO will still sign whoever they want. So who are some options out there for us to look at? ESPN has graciously provided a convenient list to start with:
Here's a list of quarterbacks about to enter free agency:
- Kurt Warner
- Kerry Collins
- Jeff Garcia
- J.P. Losman
- Rex Grossman
- Kyle Boller
- J.T. O'Sullivan
- Byron Leftwich
- Charlie Frye
- Patrick Ramsey
- Alex Smith (under contract but likely to be cut)
And if none of them do anything for you, Joey Harrington, Daunte Culpepper and Chris Simms always seem available.
Of these names, I think a few are worth looking at. Are they perfect? No. But some are intriguing. One other thing--I'm valuing younger guys over older guys, even though there are two old guys (Garcia and Warner) who would be outstanding stop gaps for us. Ok, on to the list:
- Matt Cassel--the Patriots version of Chad Pennington (who incidentally wouldn't be worse than what we have now at QB). Cassel will be 27 next, has almost no tread on the tires, but is completing a gaudy 66% of his passes right now. He's got Moss and no one else. We've got AD and a bunch of complimentary role guys who would benefit greatly from a guy who can distribute completions and keep the chains moving.
- J.P. Losman--whatever happened to that guy? Yes, he might be a bit of a headcase, but he's also a solid 63%+ passer with 7 YPA. He's a year older than Cassel, but he'll probably also be more signable at a reasonable price. Could be the Kyle Orton of next year with a change of scenery.
- Charlie Frye/Chris Simms--While he was a starter in Cleveland, Frye's completion percentage was over 60%. While a little turnover prone, he's definitely average, and that's enough for this Viking's squad (see: Gus Frerotte). As for Simms, I think he's another guy who is average, with perhaps a little higher ceiling than Frye. While at Tampa he completed just under 60% of his passes. Except for a horrendous start and subsequent injury in 2006 he still might be Tampa's starter today. He strikes me as a slightly better and significantly younger Gus Frerotte with a bit better accuracy.
- Jeff Garcia/Kurt Warner--OK, so they really deserve to be listed down here, but I felt like the young guys make for more interesting debate. Garcia would be perfect here: high percentage, high YPA, scrambling ability, and only a year+ older than Gus. He has 3000 more yards and and almost 50 more TDs than Gus in five fewer seasons. Enough said. Warner is only a month older than Gus but has 5000 more yards and almost 60 more TDs in 4 fewer seasons. Both Garcia and Warner have averaged 61.5% and 6.9 YPA or better for their careers. Of the two I think Warner is more gettable and would provide better leadership and tutoring to Tarvaris or whatever young QB is drafted to become starter in 2-3 years.
I don't think the Vikings should--or need--to break the bank finding a starting QB. In the short term Garcia or Warner make by far the most sense. They would give us a chance to win now, make our receivers better, hopefully help mentor Tarvaris/unnamed future young QB, and have no significantly detrimental salary cap effects.
The younger guys--especially if the scouts and FO are convinced are ready to come in and take the next step--are a much better medium term solution. The right guy could come in and win and establish himself as the QB of the next 5-10 years, or (at worst) would provide us another season of Gus with better running ability and less injury risk.
Of course the most obvious solution is to improve the offensive play calling and scheming to reflect and maximize the abilities of the players we have, but only time will tell if that shoe will fall. In the meantime, who do you think should be the Vikings starting QB next year?

Sentence in Point 4 should read:
"Ok, so they really don’t deserve to be listed down here…

i've always said Garcia
I like him the best of all the QB’s. Jeff has something and Gruden takes advantage of him. He’s a great leader and a Great QB. He’s had expirence in big games and can get the job done. When he does sit out he seems to come in and kill the competition. Remember him coming in for McNabb? Or how about Griese this year? The guy can make big plays all around. He’s very mobile and still has a strong arm. Not sure how old he is but judging by his performance so far this year, it doesn’t seem he’ll be a palsied old man anytime soon.
I picked Daunte because he is the only one who can get the job done. Out of this pile anyway.

i'd say go for Garcia
But i read that the Vikings might approach Cleveland about Derek Anderson instead of Brady Quinn in the off-season.

leftwich pretty in purple
Man i cant believe nobody ould want left wich. he is like 27 or 28, still young. and has a cannon for a arm. only problem is he has two bricks for feet. but man he can deliver. and but never won in play off games tho. didnt really have a supporting cast, but with our talent he could fill in for the next five years.

Leftwich
I agree; Leftwich would be intriguing.
The Vikings have been a much more vertical passing team with Gus running the show, which makes sense given their receivers. Leftwich is a pure pocket guy with no escapability, but that’s fine. He has a cannon, is smart, and pretty accurate. A similar guy in David Carr is a free agent next year as well, I thought, though I could be mistaken.
Both of these guys have shown flashes but have been stuck behind poor O-lines most of their careers (particularly Carr). Picking up one of those two, then using the draft to address the tackle position (the early mocks indicate T is a deep position next year) is certainly not the worst idea in the world. Bring in a coach who knows what he’s doing, and next year they could get this thing on track.
Speaking of big-armed QBs, I see the Giants released Andre Woodson today… Diamond in the rough? Not likely. But I think he’d be a better fit for them than Booty.

I voted for
Culpepper. He might be interested since he would be given starters role, and he would not have to compeate for it. which is a condition for his signing anywhere. having said that, if Daunte wasn’t on the list I would have voted for Warner, he has a real quick delivery, and experience leading a team all the way. And he has local conections.
Also, about Cassel, he has more then just Moss to throw too. ever heard of Wes Welker??? Thats the best deep threat and the best slot reciever in the intire league, makes it kinda easy to compleat passes for big chunks of yardage.

Welker
Ya, I thought of that after I submitted the post. My only issue with Welker is that I think he’s the beneficiary of Moss. Bobby Wade could 1000 yards receiving and 6-7 TDs if he was playing with Moss and Brady too. Does that make him the next CC or Michael Irvin? I think Welker is doing exactly what he should be doing given his role and team mates, but I’m just not sure if he’s truly the kind of guy that makes his QB and other receivers better. Know what I mean?

Garcia is the best option
He can read the defense and place the ball. The two most important traits of a quarterback.
Keep Daunte the F away. The moment Moss left he got exposed for what he is: someone who cant read a defense. With Moss teams rolled coverage which makes it hard to impossible to disguise the coverage package and creates a lot of one on one situations that a 10 year old could see. Take away moss and the Defenses could disguise which led to suckfest.
Boller sucks for the same reason.
Cassel is just a young gus. Average average average.
Losman is sketchy. He ok but not spectacular. Not going to mentor anyone though.
Everyone else on that list either sucks or is likely to retire (Warner/Collins). Rex – erratic. Leftwich – slow delivery. Ramsey – unreliable.
I would vote for a Trade to get Derek Anderson and draft a first round QB.

I dunno, Anderson isn’t doing all that great so far this season. It seems like he was a one-season wonder.

Warner
Has the heart and desire any coach would love to have. He produces with those good recievers in Zona and I am sure he could work it here. Sign Kurt or maybe Garcia, draft a good QB and develop him.
PS Don’t give up on Boots. We brought him in to develop. When he sucked in pre-season look at the situations he played in. Late in the game, backup or rookie FA players to support him. None of these guys had chemistry together. D’s they faced (with rooks and back ups) don’t have to rely on that chemistry as much. See where development takes him. We gave T-jax the ball under better conditions than Boots ever got this past pre season. Let’s see what he has picked up this year just being on the roster.

I haven’t given up on him. I’m just saying, he’s in no way ready to start yet this season. Part of the reason he looked so terrible was because he was out there with third stringers, yes. That O-line was terrible. Notably Chase “Please just run right past me” Johnson. So he was always under pressure. But you figure he could have made some check downs or something. He was fooled an awful lot, but that should improve. I just wish people would stop asking for him to play this season, because that would be stupid.

if we fall out of it, i would see what john david booty is capable of
i really think that he is going to be our qb of the future, he said he wants to play here, so if we fall out of it give him a shot, like they did with t-jack in 06 the last couple of games.
otherwise if not, i voted for matt cassel, all we really need is someone to manage this team, he reminds me of a younger chad pennington, not gus frerotte.
the red sox had a 9 game elimination win streak, but matt garza was too busy rocking out to tupac to notice

I cannot believe we still have a few fans out there that think jackson could ever keep any job but first string water boy.oh well, that is the same low rent thinking that has plagued our organization for the last two decades. i have been a fan for 34 years and i am saddened about how we are perceived in the league. we are not respected! we were, at one time, an organization filled with pride. we were a team that was an image of excellence. Forget the fact that we lost 4 superbowls, we still did it with class. we need that consistency that once was. please mr wilf, if you cannot run this team with the passion neccessary to get us back to where we once were, just sell the team!!! I cannot take much more of this floundering in mediocrity, its futility
