Vikings 30, Saints 27: Aaaaaaaaaaand I'm Spent

Antoine Winfield.

Reggie Bush.

Gus Frerotte.

Drew Brees.

You may not see a crazier game than this all season.  And, for once, we came out on the right end.

Talk amongst yourselves here.  Yours truly needs to be up at 4:30 AM to go to work, so I'm going to have to retire for the evening.  But we'll sure as hell see you back here tomorrow.

Vikings win.  I don't know how, but "how" doesn't matter.

And 720 comments between 2 game threads (as of right now) definitely has to be a Daily Norseman record.  Give yourselves a pat on the back, ladies and gentlemen.

Good night, folks!

no complaints here..

a win is a win.

Childress took some deep shots, and frerrotte actually did pretty well. It’s not too late to take this momentum and run with it!

okay. first off, unbelievably sickenening commentating by the announcers. Could they be any more biased? why does everyone hate minnesota? This game was won by the vikes just as much as it was lost by the saints. Tony Kornheiser should marry Drew Brees and be done with it.

Second. the punt returns. seriously? All you have to do is get some hang time on those or punt them out of bounds… how hard is that?!

Third. I was defending Cedric Griffin this week and I think he played a solid game tonight. He was around the ball, stripping it, and laying hits on people.

Fourth. I love Gus. Go Vikes!

by skiumah06 on Oct 7, 2008 12:15 AM CDT reply actions

wow

I will take the win even though I was ready to have Childress run out of town. I was thinking why would you kick to Bush when he ran that 1 back. On ESPN he was interviewed and said that Kluwe was told to kick those two punts out of bounds. I wonder if that is true or he is just trying to pass the blame b/c those two kicks weren’t even close to being out.

Oh and by the way, I disagree with the guys in the booth on the fact that Zygi shouldn’t be listening to the fans on talk radio. Last I checked, the fans are the ones that are going to vote on a new stadium.

My hats off to Gus.

by marksa on Oct 7, 2008 12:19 AM CDT reply actions

i absolutely agree with you on the talk radio thing. Those guys on talk radio and the fans know ten times as much as the mnf crew. Interesting about the kluwe stuff, i didn’t get to hear that. Aside from that, I thought the coaching was decent in this game. They opened things up and it got them points when we needed it.

by skiumah06 on Oct 7, 2008 12:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Sort of

We don’t get to vote, but we can write letters to our state reps who do get to vote. and if we hate the coach, we can write one type of letter. if the team moves in a positive direction then we can write a very different kind of letter.

Big

This was an important win. The Vikes couldn’t afford to be 1-4 obviously, and despite how rough it’s been, with their toughest games mostly out of the way, they have a fine shot to get to 10 wins now for a playoff chance.

With all the parity in the league now and no real standout teams there is a big opportunity for one of the teams in with the rest of the pack, one with a lot of talent that isn’t really putting it all together yet, to start clicking around week 10 or 11, win most of the rest of their games, and go into the playoffs playing better than anyone else in the NFL. Maybe the Vikings can be that team if Chilly can figure out how to keep the passing attack going. At least Berrian and the deep ball showed promise tonight. Maybe that will keep 9 out of the box…

Viking's Football? You can't handle Viking's Football...

Hats off to Ced Griffin on cleaning Billy Miller’s clock, whether he’s fined or not. If they want to play Fear Factor, the correct answer is to show them that they too have something to fear.

Can we clone Antoine or fit him in the copy machine? Talk about a wrecking crew…

“If he can’t do that, I’ll find someone to kick that ball out of bounds.” -The No-More-Mr-Nice-Guy Brad Childress regarding Kluwe’s repeated failures to follow orders on the punts to Reggie Bush.

by Elgar on Oct 7, 2008 2:12 AM CDT reply actions

I love how

…Childress is showing his bravado now that they have the New Orleans game behind them.

The fact is, the play calling is still lackluster (although taking some shots deep through the air – good calls). Our offense still can’t get much momentum, and if it weren’t for our defense we’d be – Rams-like at best.

Thankfully, the Packers have dropped THREE in a row now, and are looking less like the 13-3 they were last year, and alot more like a 7-9 team. So, we’re definitely still in the NFC North, and still able to cause some damage now that our tough(er) games are out of the way.

by AustinVike on Oct 7, 2008 7:52 AM CDT up reply actions

Folks need to think before blaming Childress for everything

It will probably be his fault when it gets cold this winter…

While Childress seemed pleased with his team’s effort, he wasn’t at all happy with punter Chris Kluwe. Childress made it clear that Kluwe was supposed to kick the ball out of bounds on both punts that Bush returned for touchdowns. This led to an obviously irate Childress chastising Kluwe on the sideline after the second score.

"When we say to somebody to kick the ball out of bounds that’s what you expect to get," Childress said. "That’s what I expect to happen from a professional football kicker. It’s no different than kicking away from the guy in Chicago [Devin Hester]. There’s nothing wrong with that. I’m disappointed that we weren’t able to get that done."

Childress was then asked if Kluwe is capable of handling a directional punt that is supposed to land anywhere but near the field of play. "If he can’t do that, I will somebody who can kick the ball out of bounds," Childress said.

by dkerfoot on Oct 7, 2008 7:48 AM CDT reply actions

I call BS

That is flat out crap. Kluwe can kick out of bounds if he wants to. But he wasn’t told to. And Childress is trying to save his own ass because he would have been fired this morning if the Vikings lost.

Childress still sucks. This is a poorly coached team that can only win if the freakish defensive play via Antoine Winfield happens.

by TMW on Oct 7, 2008 10:28 AM CDT up reply actions

Childress Should Get Blame...

….for playing “not to lose.” The end of the 1st half was horrible! We got 3, b/c that’s all Chilly tried to get. You have two timeouts left, about a minute to play, and you run the ball up the friggin’ middle from your own side of the field??? C’mon, man!

Still too many dropped passes, but the receivers did make Gus look better than he was. I’m really surprised the Saints didn’t get a pick.

Looks like Frazier finally realized that the front 4 weren’t getting it done and mixed in some blitzes. I love me some Antoine!

What do you guys think of Herron? I saw a play or two where he was out of position [EJ would’ve been all over Bush in the flat on that 4th (3rd?) and 1], but nothing glaring.

How about Leber getting downfield??? Rock on!

Someday AP will be fortunate enough to have a coach that does something other than run him up the middle. I was worried on that almost fumble – he got his clock cleaned.

Detroit isn’t a push-over; they’ll have to win eventually. Let’s just hope it’s not against us!

by JasonAve6413 on Oct 7, 2008 8:14 AM CDT reply actions

No, I would have to say that Detroit is a push over. I mean, they’ve been getting their ass kicked week in, week out. Michael Turner had 186 yards on 6 carries at one point. I think we’ll be just fine against them.

by Frost on Oct 7, 2008 8:31 AM CDT up reply actions

You listen to the announcers too much, man. The Vikes did exactly what they were supposed to do in that situation.. get into field goal range with enough time to take some shots into the end zone.. AND leave no time on the clock for NO. They did exactly that and you’re whining about a running play.

by Heech on Oct 7, 2008 9:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Ears AND Eyes

Whining? Sorry, Beech, didn’t mean to upset your precious sensibilities. What I do when I watch a game, Beech, is absorb any articles I can before the game, listen to the announcers, and watch with my own eyes.

The Vikings have been deplorable in a hurry-up or 2 minute offense. They were having their best drive of the game, moving down the field. You see, Beech, I would prefer the coach show some confidence in his team and try to WIN and get TDs instead of playing the patented Childress prevent offense.

Thank you DVR

My DVR saved me last night from getting a plane ticket to N.O. just so I could beat the shit out of Tony K. this morning. I luckily had enough time built up that I was able to skip through the play clock on each play at the end of the game, and thus no longer hear his voice. If you haven’t noticed, he doesn’t do play-by-play. Seriously, if I had to listen to him talk between snaps anymore last night, I would have snapped.

The announcers were totally biased. No mention of how Bernard was able to put up the numbers he did. Imagine if there wasn’t any pass interference and Berrian had a shot at catching the ball, which he probably would have, the numbers Gus and Bernard would have. Drew Brees put up 330, and I am guessing Gus wouldn’t have been too far behind. Not too shabby. You really have to hand it to those two, because the Vikings had no other offense going besides them. Way to step it up.

by SippyCup on Oct 7, 2008 8:28 AM CDT reply actions

Bernard and Frerotte need to work on their chemistry a little bit. Berrian wasn’t even supposed to catch that TD pass, it was for Allison.

by Frost on Oct 7, 2008 8:32 AM CDT up reply actions

I’m not saying that I don’t want the TD. I will definitely take it. But that stuff won’t work in every game. Recievers are supposed to run the routes they need to.

by Frost on Oct 7, 2008 8:33 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree, Frost

Bernard was not supposed to be there, and Aundrae probably would have caught that ball otherwise. However, you have to give him credit for catching the ball. Bernard stepped up and made some big plays when he was needed.

They do need to work on their timing. That under-thrown long route could have been a touchdown if they had timing. Hopefully, Gus and Bernard talk some more this week and work on some of those things.

We're supposed to believe this went down.

Coach – Kick it out of bounds
Kluwe – Ok coach (whatever, coach doesn’t know jack, I’m kicking to him)

Coach – Out of #@%# bounds this time Kluwe!
Kluwe – yeah, sure (you know what, I’m gonna do it again)

Coach – Ok kicker, you really got me good. Now really, don’t kick to him this time.
Kluwe – Got it (what a dumbass, he’s gotta know I’m gonna kick to him again)

Klue tried to get to exact on his kicks.

He tried to kick it 50 yrds and out of bounds at the same time. He missed the kick and Bush made us pay. I would bet a dollar the next time the ball is definitely going out of bounds!

by Unclebillybonz on Oct 7, 2008 10:41 AM CDT up reply actions

hard to believe

I’m sorry, but it’s not like it was a RB going out to the flat instead of pass blocking.. or a even a WR running the wrong routes. This was a freakin kicker! His 1 job is to kick the ball. Nothing to remember, nothing to read. There is no game film to study. You gotta be dumber than a sack of hammers to not be able to kick the ball out of bounds after you were told to do so 3 TIMES! I just don’t believe it.

by Heech on Oct 7, 2008 11:03 AM CDT up reply actions

It's not an easy task to master otherwise

you and I would be on a team doing it instead of sitting at our computers. Sure he could kick the ball 20 yrds down the field and out of bounds. Do you really want to intentionally surrender that much field position? I know I don’t! In defense of Klue, there was 10 other guys on the field with him who could have done their job as well and you know, TACKLED Bush! Klue was trying to boom one down the field and get it out of bounds at the same time. He screwed it up. He is hardly alone in that catagory.

"Do you really want to intentionally surrender that much field position?"

When the special teams is that bad and Bush is that dangerous the answer is ABSOLUTELY.

Childress is the only coach who does not get this. It was obvious to the idiot announcers last night and any Viking fan.

by TMW on Oct 7, 2008 11:48 AM CDT up reply actions

So you would be okay if Klue just kicked a 20 yarder out of bounds?

Something tells me you would be on here screaming just as much had Klue managed a couple of 25 yrd punts out of bounds.

by Unclebillybonz on Oct 7, 2008 12:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Nah

I live in Chicago and I see teams do it to Devin Hester every week. Except of course Childress who didn’t seem to pick up on that trend.

by TMW on Oct 7, 2008 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions

you do not see teams punt the ball 25 yrds

out of bounds to avoid kicking to Hester unless the ball is at midfield.

when a team is deep in their own territory (as the Vikings were) you try and kick it out of bounds but try and boom it as far as possible. Klue failed at that aspect but under NO circumstances when you are around your own 20 yrd line do you punt it 25 yrds out of bounds. Thats just stupid and no coach would do it.

VikeGuru is a doofus!!

by Unclebillybonz on Oct 7, 2008 1:34 PM CDT up reply actions

"you do not see teams punt the ball 25 yrds out of bounds to avoid kicking to Hester unless the ball is at midfield."

Yes you do. Watch most other teams that aren’t the Vikings.

Those returns were 71 yards and 64 yards respectively, the one where he tripped was fielded at the 22. You could have punted the ball to 40 or the 50 and I’d take it over what he’s capable of.

by TMW on Oct 7, 2008 1:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Here ya go.

from their own 26 yrd line Detroit does NOT punt the ball out of bounds. 4-18-DET 15 (13:37) 2-N.Harris punts 47 yards to CHI 38, Center-48-D.Muhlbach. 23-D.Hester to CHI 47 for 9 yards (48-D.Muhlbach).
—(5:18) 2-N.Harris punts 49 yards to CHI 7, Center-48-D.Muhlbach, fair catch by 23-D.Hester. — Still no punt out of bounds.
4-4-DET 26 (2:33) 2-N.Harris punts 51 yards to CHI 23, Center-48-D.Muhlbach. 23-D.Hester pushed ob at CHI 28 for 5 yards (24-K.Pearson). —nope not yet
4-4-DET 21 (9:34) 2-N.Harris punts 40 yards to CHI 39, Center-48-D.Muhlbach. 23-D.Hester pushed ob at CHI 48 for 9 yards (38-R.Robinson). PENALTY on DET-38-R.Robinson, Personal Foul, 15 yards, enforced at CHI 48. —still no punt out of bounds!??
4-9-CHI 49 (4:02) 2-N.Harris punts 49 yards to end zone, Center-48-D.Muhlbach, Touchback. Kick out of the endzone
4-2-DET 41 (:40) 2-N.Harris punts 41 yards to CHI 18, Center-48-D.Muhlbach, fair catch by 23-D.Hester. still not out of bounds, whats going on? Lions didn’t once punt the ball out of bounds!? Checking the Philly game, they had 6 punts in their game and only once did the punt go out of bounds! Versus the Buc’s, Tampa had 5 punts and only one was out of bounds. Against the Panthers, 6 punts ONE was out of bounds. So you see, teams do NOT do it all the time, even against the best in the buisness.

VikeGuru is a doofus!!

Re:

The Lions were getting blown out, that doesn’t apply

All these teams have better special teams than the Vikings. And these teams had the sense to punt it away when the game was on the line.

Good Win

The game last night might be the last one I see this season unless the Vikings can make the playoffs. I continue to believe Childress is not the coach that can give this team the intangibles that it takes to win consistantly. He appears unable to motivate them to reach the mental discipline and toughness required to be winning team. He does not appear to be able to inspire the team to attain that collective will to dominate.
The New Orleans game appeared to unfolding in the same manner as all of the others over the past three years. The team comes our flat, gives the other team excellent field position and then falls behind within minutes of the start of the game. The defense is forced to fight an up hill battle every game. The offense is unispired and unimaginitive and wastes the skills of two very good running backs.

Childress’ lack of leadership is apparent to everyone but the owners. The fans see it, the sports press sees it and it does not appear that it will change until Childress is no longer the coach. He was forced to call plays down the field last night and it should not take having your back against the wall to bring some explosiveness to this offense. Gus has an arm Childress and Blevins, please start using it so that running lanes open up for Adrian and Chester!

It was a good and necessary win. Thankfully, Antonie Winfield was able to inspire himself and did not have to rely on inspiration from his coaching staff.

by TexasViking on Oct 7, 2008 10:25 AM CDT reply actions

Three things I dislike about Childress

1. When a player gets injured, he seems indifferent. Dare I mention Mike Tice, but at least Tice had the courtesy to show an injured player that he cared by coming out onto the field and talking to the player directly. That shows class – something that Childress lacks – especially when he places blame, publicly, on one of his players – which brings me to #2.

2. Lack of respect for the players & fans. You know, even if we had lost to N.O. last night, it wouldn’t have been Kluwe’s fault. Sure, an individual player can screw up and make a mistake, but it takes a team of players making a team of mistakes (i.e; the New Orleans Saints) to lose a game. To point the finger, and place the blame (publicly) on one player just goes to show that Childress lacks respect for his players, and lacks respect for Vikings fans. And I don’t know why it bothers me, but Childress clearly DOES NOT work out with his team (giant man breasts) either. Yeah, it’s funny, but it’s also true.

3. Play calling (Childress = The Dark Knight). I sometimes picture Childress sitting in his office in front of a monitor, delivering lines from the previous game in his best Dark Knight/Christian Bale voice…pretending he’s invincible, maybe even wearing duster and fishing hat. This scenario just strikes me as all-but-possible. But I also like to pretend he’s thinking about irregular circumstances when he can use a well-executed trick play to win back the adoration of the Vikings fans he has worked so hard to exclude.

Point is, when you are a 1-3 football team, playing from behind, as we have done so frequently with Childress at the helm, you need to step up your aggressiveness, if even to get your team in a position to place the ball solidly in the opponents end of the field (and ESPECIALLY when your defense is nearly outscoring your offense) – you need to get the ball out of your end of the field if your offense can’t make things happen.

by AustinVike on Oct 7, 2008 11:32 AM CDT reply actions

I agree w/ the Childress comments. This guy threw one of his players under the bus. He has continued to create apprehension in that locker room. Now players are nervous the same thing is going to happen to them OR the players don’t give a crap b/c they have contracts. These players know they will be playing next year regardless where Childress lands.

The thing I don’t understand is the deal with Adrian Peterson. Why not more screen passes to get him in the open field? I remember when they use to do that with Robert Smith and it seemed to work fine. I don’t get it.

by marksa on Oct 7, 2008 1:57 PM CDT reply actions

alas, we will never know the truth

we will never hear the truth of this anyway. if Kluwe says “Scrappy McButtfuzz” (Childress), didn’t tell him to kick to the sideline, then he will in kicker hell until Scrappy is finally gone.
i guess we will just have to make our own assumptions her on out…

by Supergus on Oct 7, 2008 3:31 PM CDT reply actions

alrite we all need to quit talking bad about childress. he’s our coach AND is gonna be the coach until hes fired or quits. we wn yester day didnt we. why the hell are we talking about letting up the two returns, when thats part of the game. we didnt let their offense score exept that one td and the two fg’s. saints had to find a way to score and they did it on special teams. but we answered back and won with out adrian of all things. Berrian had his first hundred yard game and frerotte threw for 222 yards so at least things are starting to click. But i a begging childress to please let ap run a stretch, counter, or a pitch every once and a while. i almost had heart failure when they lit him up. another thing tho for those that are just gonna talk about why we suck and we just get lucky with the spuractic play of winfield making plays, really should ask them selfs am i really a vikings fan, or am i just bitter that my coach drives me crazy. players gotta help chilly out. the plays are there. we can do it .

by da2213viking on Oct 7, 2008 5:13 PM CDT reply actions

Alrite?

After decoding your post, I can say that I agree with most of what you’ve tried to say.

Point 1 – Berrian finally made some catches. When they were most needed, and definitely appreciated. It’s just too bad they didn’t come sooner (like the Green Bay game, perhaps?).

Point 2 – Our defense shut them down. New Orleans still threw for a ton of yards, and to be honest I thought they would’ve thrown for many more (I was expecting a 400 yard game from Brees). Knowing our weaknesses (pass defense), and our opponents strengths (passing) – it’s only obvious to make this assumption. I had no idea that our special teams would allow this game to get close – either way (from Winfield’s blocked FG return – to our TWO failures to stop Reggie Bush from taking it home during punt returns). Who could expect any of these scenarios? You just can’t.

Point 3 – Vikes fans need to quit bagging on Childress. Sorry, but I can’t agree with you on this. Fact is, Childress makes more money than most of us do in five years, by coaching a football team. Our support for the Vikings pays his salary. If we disagree with his manner of coaching, then at the very least we should be vocal about it (because there’s no way I’m going to start boycotting games, or avoiding merch, etc). If we were in a situation like St. Louis or Houston, I would strongly consider boycotting games (given their circumstances – their teams just all around suck).

Chilly manages to redeem himself when he needs to – which makes him a pretty average coach in my book. Not great, not awful.
