Brad Childress is...Major Dad???
MAJOR props to Big Cat Country's "River City Rage," the main Jaguars blogger. This is one of the funniest pics I've seen since the McDonald's pic we had here earlier this year...
The special teams BAILED him again today - this man is too lucky for words.
Maybe Chilly should find a new day job...He looks kind of good in a captain's hat, don't you all think?

I'm honestly on the fence now
I was dead-set against him after the 0-2 start, but wins do a heck of a job of changing the way you look at things. I honestly don’t know what I want… switching head coaches after only two years might not be too soon… yet he makes such horrible decisions sometimes… I’m just going to sit back and hope for the best, I think.

it’s three years… and that’s plenty of time to decide that he needs to be canned.
Any win we’ve pulled out this year has had nothing to do with good coaching.

From what I saw today, he didn’t do too bad calling plays. I mean, we scored within the first 3 plays on offense. WITHOUT Peterson. There were some stupid plays called, but you can find those with any team in any game.

And I'm not saying he's the reason we're winning
Just that it’s hard to keep campaigning for the coach to get fired when the team is winning games and on top of the division.

We fired Tice after a winning season… It’s obvious that Chilly is not the leader we need for this team, and I just figure, why keep prolonging the inevitable?
Let’s get a new coach in here this offseason and let him try his hand at finding us a franchise QB. I just want a head coach here that the players feel truely inspired to go to war for. I just don’t see that with Big Bad Brad.

The only thing is: Who do we bring in? Seriously. Do I get frustrated with Childress? Yes. Could he use some work? Definitely. But to bring in some new guy right off the bat, he’d better be very good at what he does, or he might not even be an upgrade. And don’t give me the “anyone is an upgrade” crap, because I bet that if we do fire Childress the record next year will be the same or close to the one this year.

On the top of my list is, of course, Bill Cowher. Nobody is even sure that Bill will coach again in the near future, or ever, but he hasn’t dismissed the idea of coming back and trying to pick up a second ring. And our team is built a whole heck of a lot like the kind of team Cowher likes.
Also, you hear the names Schottenheimer and Billick come up. In my opinion either one of them would be great to go for… both have had plenty of success in the past and Billick even has a ring (A ring he won with a stout defense and a crappy QB… sound familiar?)
And if you aren’t sold on these out of NFL vet coaches… just look at the success unknown assistants have had this year in the league as 1st year coaches. Mike Smith, Jim Zorn, Tony Sporano… seeing their success in turning those teams around would make me much less nervous if a lesser-known candidate won the job. The truth is… every week our team is outcoached. If you disagree with that, then I want you to explain to me one game this season that our sideline was the dominant coaching staff. Even in games we won (Even yesterday, our biggest win of the year) we were completely outcoached and outgameplanned.
Childress is uninspiring, Bevell is pathetic, Ferraro’s squad is having a historically bad year, and Frazier’s schemes just aren’t working. On a sidenote, before everybody starts blasting me on the Frazier comment… any success we have on defense is strictly because of the talent of our front four. Frazier has been bringing blitz pressure, but it always seems that QB’s don’t have a problem finding their receiver before the hit gets put on. When our defense is successful is towards the end of the game when our superior D-line is less tired than the gassing o-line and they alone get to the QB much faster. If you say, “Well, it’s those early game schemes that lead to the defense being dominant at the end..” then my response is, “that’s not good enough.” They have to play dominant D all game long, and right now Frazier’s schemes are getting us eaten alive through the air for three quarters every game. Perhaps Dunbar has some good ideas that he could present in an interview for the D-coordinator position?? I don’t know.
I love the Vikings so much, and for the 25 years that I have been following the team, I have never felt this way about the coaching staff. But, hey, we’re all entitled to our opinion, right?

Anyone is an upgrade.
Brad Childress is that bad in every possible area of coaching. Horrible. And don’t give me this “we’re winning” nonsense. We are 6-5 with 1 of the most talented teams in the league. I’m not going to let Childress’ horribleness (the last 2 years and this year) lower my expectations for this team. Go Vikes!

I said not to give me that excuse! You don’t know that!
And yeah, this year the new coaches have done well. But that doesn’t mean they’ll be so good next year. For instance, one year Mangini led the Jets to the playoffs. The next, they finished with a top 10 draft pick. This season they’re doing well, but I’m laying that more on Favre than Mangini’s playcalling.

No, Tice was not fired for a 9-7 record.
He was fired for getting caught scalping tickets in an era when Smooter was busy arranging boating excursions. That’s frequently how business goes. Bad PR will get your ship sunk.

Play calling still need work
Most of our points come off of turnovers. If our offense starts at the 20, seems it’s usually a 3 and out.
by keomr on Nov 24, 2008 2:30 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Most teams don’t get much going when they start from the 20. Otherwise you’d see ridiculously high scores week in and week out.

I think Chilli
Just needs to realize when it is time to get cute, and when it is time to pound the rock with the best backs in the NFL and a solid line. Examples:
When not to get cute: 1st and goal on the 2. POUND THE DAMN FOOTBALL 3 or 4 TIMES WITH AD/CHESTER. I PROMISE YOU WILL SCORE A TD ONE OF THOSE TIMES.
What Chilli does: Roll-out with Gus “Cement Shoes” Frerotte, sack. DUH
When to get cute: Midfield end-arounds or pitches to Berrian, I like these plays as it gets a very highly payed and talented athlete the ball.

Major Dad? No way.
I won’t get into arguing about whether or not we should fire our coach, because there are still 5 big games left that could change everyone’s opinion. However, I refuse to believe the nonsense that Chilly is Major Dad or even looks like him. Brad Childress is OBVIOUSLY Sesame Street’s Mr. Noodle. Take a look.

Holy cow, I forgot all about that creepy guy from Sesame Street!! The comparison is uncanny!!
Shouldn’t the fact that he draws asthetic comparisons to these guys be enough to want our coach fired?? I’m all for Mr. Noodle’s upheaval!

Has there really been an improvement with Childress
We could have had Shawn Merriman, but instead we choose Troy Williamson,we also get T.Jack and Thigpen but somehow Thigpen was basicly let go.To tell the Truth Thigpen looks pretty good so far.How did this gem slip thru a so called Q.B. coach genuis fingers.
To be honest it seems to me Childress has been learning how to coach at the Vikes exspense and at the wear and tear of our Defense,2 great running backs. After 2 and a half years he still hasnt got a clue on how to use AP.If it was any other Coach, after the first year plays would have been made to use both Running backs in screens, some deep passing and as the great work horses they are.
Sorry but I cant see letting Childress have an input on our next QB and future Wideouts.
6-5 does not make a good season and lets say we make it to the playoffs.Do you really think Teams are going to give 2 fumbles at the start of every game. Those Teams are going to come to win with a game plan and will make adjustments as needed.Sack,Run,Pass,Punt will not cut it in the playoffs.Thats what we will see as long as Childress is at the helm of this Team.
by speedlod on Nov 24, 2008 6:56 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
First, Childress wasn’t even the coach when Troy Williamson was picked. And no, Thigpen wasn’t basically let go. They tried to get him into the practice squad. KC simply snatched him up, like we did with Garret Mills. Last season’s drafts were actually pretty solid. You see, I’m pretty sure, all of them on the team now. Granted this season’s wasn’t as spectacular, but that’s because Jared Allen was half our draft.
Rice and Allison are decent recievers, those are wide outs he’s brought in since his tenure here. As for Jackson, well, not much to say there. There’s not enough information. He never had the freedom that Gus has, but I don’t think he’s any worse than Frerotte is.

Shucks, you caught me.
No, I’m just trying to clarify a few things. I don’t care if you hate the guy, I typically jump on the boat during the games, but at least hate him for the right reasons. Making stuff up isn’t doing any good.
by Frost on Nov 25, 2008 8:26 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
alright
Meathead picked williamson fault is his but looks to me Thigpen should have had a roster spot instead of trying get cute with slipping thru waivers which is how Kc picked him up.Rice and Allison are not burrning up the field either and we only had 5 picks from 2008.Now Randy Moss theres a real wideout.
No matter how you look at it Childress is not Head Coach material. From his play calling to his non adjustments at halftime. If we do end up in the play-offs we will get ouir asses handed to us.Without those fumbles by the Jags we lose and if we aint got our act together we going to be a hurt unit on Sunday. We need better game planning, preperation ,using our players strentghs and avoid using players weakneses.Gus trying to scrammble is a weakness, putting AP on the bench in the 4th quater a weakness and sheer stupidity.Tjack might be something with a decent QB COACH and maybe some decent plays.Childress will always under achieve he cant learn from his mistakes.

I'm sorry, but you can in no way assume we lose if we don't get the fumbles.
It’s like saying, “If we don’t get TDs we don’t win.” Well, technically yeah. That’s how it works. The defense is supposed to get stops and force turnovers, the offense is supposed to score. You don’t do those things, you don’t win.

Even without the turnovers, 14 points off the two first fumbles, we would have won. Our D-Line was just awesome.

Take those fumbles away
And add up all our scoring drives up,not knocking the win.But if the Jags play a turnover free game the Vikes lose. What do you think we are going to be up against if we get to the playoffs. Our offense needs to start scoring, marching down the field,we cant count on the Def all the time.If the offense can sustain drives that gives the Def a chance rest wears opposing Def down for IF,and WHEN Ap gets to play3rd and 4th quaters.
No matter what Childress is not the man for the job.First place is ours for taking next Sunday night after GB lost tonight. You can bet the Bears are eyeballing that first place spot also.

Missing Some Key Points
Those fumbles are evidence. Don’t tamper with them. Good coaches know that the turnover ratio is key to winning. Against the Bucs, Maurice Hicks (whose main assignment was special teams) fumbled the football away in the fourth quarter on the run back, because he was not protecting the ball properly, robbing the offense of a turn at the football and giving Tampa good field position, all with one poor move. In the Jags game, you noticed that the role of kick returner had been given to Darius Renaud by the coaches. One should also have noticed that Visante Shiancoe used proper technique and covered up the football with both arms before he was hit, unlike his habit earlier in the season of hitting the carpet like a cheap vase and watching the bouquet roll away. He’s clearly been putting time in doing his homework, even if some had written him off. Antoine Winfield positioned himself and used good technique to strip the football from the receiver. (Why aren’t more loyal Vikings fans voting to send 26 to Hawaii? This Pro Bowl deal is a Chicago-style election where the idea is to vote often. I’ve voted for “Toine myself over a hundred times, and I’m not done yet.) The Jags were sloppy with ball security. They lost. The Vikings gave more attention to obtaining and holding onto the football. The Vikings won. They also kept their main offensive weapon rested and healthy for the Bears game. These points are evidence that indicates better preparation of this team by the coaching staff. Such things are not mere coincidences. Fumbles are not just random events. Players cause fumbles. The Jags lost because they were less prepared. There is only one day on which being in first place in the division counts for something. That day is after the last game of the regular season. A fair trial requires that the jury wait until all the evidence has been presented before beginning deliberations on the charges against the accused. Return the prisoner to his cell. This thing ain’t over. The smart runner saves some of his best stuff for the finish of the race. In the words of that great orator, Yogi Berra, "It ain’t over till it’s over.”

Whew
Elgar, you just happen to have more faith in Chilly then I do,Without the 3 fumbles and 2 inters The Vikes are held to FGs.Which is my point, its great the Def played great but it aint like we took down a 10-0 team.It was great to see another Team make the mistakes we most times do.We got the Bears,Lions,Cards,Falcons, and The Giants coming up.All but 1 of those teams have been racking up some points.Aint 1 gimme game in the bunch, 4 of those teams can light up the passing game scoring fast.I want the Vikes in the playoffs as much as you or anyone else. And yea I been voting Antoine myself,he really has stepped his game up.

I'm going to have to change my voting style...
I vote for every position, trying to pick out the most deserving players. Unfortuantely, that takes so long that I only vote a couple times. I’m going to whittle it down to just voting for the ones I care about, and maybe a few outstanding others (Brees, Warner, etc.).
