Michael Vick in Purple?
One QB who will probably be available this spring that might be just what the Vikings need, is Michael Vick. If his ability has survived a year and a half in prison, he could be a very capable and available quarterback next year.
But his past may be too much for folks to accept. Serving a prison term for animal abuse may not be enough punishment in the hearts and minds of many dog-lovers around the country.
What do folks here think about the idea of the Vikings picking up Vick?

No way.
And it’s not because of his past (though I’m not a fan of that). He has great athletic ability but is NOT a good quarterback. He could never lead the Falcons to back to back winning seasons and struggled to keep a completion percentage above 50 during his career in a west coast offense.
Give me Matt Cassel. Give me a rookie QB. Give me anyone, ANYONE but Michael Vick. He is a joke at the quarterback position.
Get him the ball in open space and sure, he’s a good player. Not throwing it.

No Vick, but not because of the dogs.
The dog and jail thing has nothing to do with why I don’t want him on the Vikes. He just wasn’t a very good QB. The guy is/was a hell of an athlete and can run like crazy, but he’s never been consistently accurate and he’s easily flustered and frustrated. Sound familiar? That’s probably because we already have our own Michael Vick—Tarvaris Jackson! I’d love someone like Matt Cassell—a good, young, accurate passer that would fit in well with the existing tools the Vikings have. The only concern I have is that the price for Cassell is going to be very high thanks to his past few weeks of play, and I’m not sure the Vikes have the cap room to afford him.

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!
Matt Cassell
Sage Rosenfels
Derek Anderson
Donovan McNabb
one of the SF QB’s
draft day pickup
Booty
these are all better options, IMO, than Vick. And these are just off the top of my head w/o any roster checks. I’d take T-Jack and Gus before Vick too.

I say no, for a multitude of reasons. First off, the whole dog-fighting thing would hound the entire team for as long as he was on here. You just know the media is going to attack whichever, if any, team picks him up.
Second, as its been said, he wasn’t that great of a QB. Good runner, elusive, but I wouldn’t mind having a pocket passer for once.
And, finally, the fact he’s been in prison for around 2 years. You don’t just leave the NFL for a couple years, come back, and pick up where you left off. Look at Pacman jones. He really hasn’t done that well since his season long suspension.

That would result in me finding another team to be a fan of
I would not even put Michael Vick on my fantasy team. I have Packers on there for God sake.
It is about the dogs. A person that is willing to torture animals is a sick individual. These people I would lump with people that harm children. I am not a bleeding heart either. I eat meat and hunt. This is about senseless destruction of a living thing.
And to top it all off, he is a mediocre quarterback. He never should have been more that a kick returner anywhere.

Micheal Vick????
In case no one has noticed the running quarterback idea hasn’t worked. The Vikings have a “running back” they need a “quarterback”! What’s next we change the name to the Minnisota VICKing’s? Please! They need a PASSER!!! that knows how to play football. They need a quarterback not a glorified running back. Tom Brady wins Super Bowls not Donavan McNabb. John Elway, Brett Farve, Troy Aikman, and Joe Montana win super bowls not Vince Young,Tavarus Jackson, Dante Culpepper, and sure as hell not Micheal fricken Vick!!! Personally I think it’s the Vikings own fault they need to get coaches in there that understand the passing game and know how to coach quaterbacks. I believe TJ could be a decent QB but they have him rolling out and throwing on the run like Jake Plummer and we’ll all know how good that worked in Arizona and Denver. The best QB’s in the league today are Brett Farve and Kurt Warner. These guy’s don’t run they couldn’t if they tried. My point is neither at the collegiate nor the professional level are these QB’s today being properly prepared to play the quarterback position. They have not been given the proper training to compete at a level to lead their team and be successfull.

While you make good points...
I feel it is necessary to comment on your “best QBs in the league today” part of your post. Brett Favre is certainly playing well after some beginning problems but he is nowhere near the best in the league. Kurt Warner is one of the best QBs this year, but I feel you should probably include Drew Brees in that statement. How about a healthy Peyton Manning? He’s tossing the rock like he used to now that his knees aren’t acting up.
I do, of course, agree that the best QBs are the ones who stand in the pocket and rifle the ball. They are passers first, runners second. Some at the position don’t understand that. That doesn’t mean that scramblers can’t be good QBs. Look at Jeff Garcia; the man is 37 (I believe) and made the Vikings’ defensive line look silly as they chased him around. He’s accurate. The Vikings’ own Daunte Culpepper could easily pull the ball and run back when he was healthy, but he also had the arm to throw it downfield accurately.
Really, though, you make fine points. I just can’t stand to have Brett Favre as a QB considered “best” at the position, even if he’s with the Jets. He’s a great player, but too many years of Viking losses to that old man have made me bitter. He’s doing good things, but the Jets did more than just get him this offseason.

Let's not be so quick to judge...
I’m sure you wrote this post somewhat hastily and didn’t think about what it was you were actually writing, so I’m not going to accuse of anything more than that. I’m not one who is all that sensitive when it comes to these issues, but I do find it a bit disturbing that you list all black quarterbacks as ones who cannot win, and all white ones who can.
I take particular exception to McNabb being on your list who is not at all a running quarterback. Maybe you could make that case earlier in his career—but that was due in large part to his inexperience and learning—but certainly not now. He has gone to four conference championship games and played in one Super Bowl. Sure he didn’t win it, but just because Trent Dilfer won one doesn’t mean he is a better quarterback than McNabb. In other words, McNabb has a proven track record for succes, and I really wish we had traded for him instead of Jared Allen (bigger need at QB).
Furthermore, Culpepper was a league MVP that took us to a conference championship game. While Vince Young certainly has his shortcomings, he is the only reason Tennessee was any good at all the last few years. He single-handedly took the Titans from a 2-7 team to an 8-8 team in 2006, and then led them to a 10-6 record last year. He is still too young to judge whether or not he will ultimately have a successful career (I concede he DOES need to improve his passing). On the other side of the coin, Steve Young is one of the greatest QBs in NFL history, and he was most known for his runnings/scrambling abilities that led to big plays. Also, let’s not forget how long it took Elway to shake the “loser” label much like McNabb has now.
in conclusion, McNabb would be the guy I would most like to see in Purple. In college, I’m really impressed with Colt McCoy. Ultimately, we need better receivers if we have any hope of a new quarterback making any difference.
P.S. Since this was originally about Vick, I say hell no. If the whole dogfighting wasn’t enough, I agree with most other posters here that he simply wasn’t a very good passer. Very good athlete, but not very good quarterback. Obviously, judgment is a quality you want in a quarterback, and he hasn’t shown it off the field—or on it.

I'm pretty sure (and it's spelled DAUNTE)
Culpepper was a pass first QB! And you rant on about running QB’s not being able to get it done. Steve Young was a pretty damn good running QB who has a ring or two!
And since you brought it up…………….Troy Aikman? It’s a farce that he is in the HOF, he was an above average QB who benefited from one of the greatest OLines ever assembled coughEmmitSmithcough
It’s a joke he got in. Never threw for more then 3445 yrds in a season, never threw more than 23 TD’s and only broke 20 that one season. He was accurate and didn’t throw a lot of INT’s but HOF?? please.

Count me in the “who cares what a thug he is, he stinks as a QB” column. The guy fumbles like Culpepper but doesn’t come close to the TDs.
Good athlete, below average quarterback, lousy judgment. We will have much more enticing options, it’s just acting on them that is the sticking point.

no f-ing way.
he was a lousy qb, as inaccurate as any qb playing today including jacko and he is an even worse person. he is as big of a lowlife as can be. i would be disgusted to see him in purple. what a contrast, a young man like peterson w/ a scumbag like vick.

Michael Vick cannot play the quarterback position. He is totally inaccurate and makes horrible decisions throwing the ball. I agree with what everyone else has said.

NOPE!
Killing innocent dogs killed his career. He’ll bring that stench with him to minnesota too and we don’t need that. He sucks and I don’t miss him and would’nt give him the pleasure of wearing a purple jersey. It would be a disgrace to every player that ever meant something to minnesota.

i was one of mike vick’s biggest fans(still hope that he gets another chance somewhere when he gets out of jail) and i think u put in the spread offense in for vick and he could be on top again

Accuracy is necessary.
Unfortunately, putting Michael Vick in a spread offense would essentially be suicide for your season. He couldn’t maintain a 50% completion rate in a west coast offense, so spreading the field with four and five wide receivers would only cause even more problems.
He would best be used as a Reggie Bush type player; slot receiver, running back every once in awhile. A quarterback he is not. And we really don’t need that type of negative press for our team. Let the Raiders or someone else have him.

Why Not Garcia?
Didn’t the Vikes have a shot at Garcia? I thought we did and passed on him earlier this year.
When Pennington came free in NY, I think the Vikes should have fought tooth and nail to get him.

Yep, I was hoping we’d take Pennington too. I don’t even think we took a look at the guy though.
Anyways, if Garcia is free I’d say to take him, but I really think McNabb would be better for the team, especially since he’s younger and we could use him for a few more years until we find the future QB.

Experienced, battle tested, successful, smart, and not too old yet. Not sure what it is going to take to get him, though.
