Jeff Garcia is a free agent, why isn’t he on this list? Or does he fall into the “Another scrap heap veteran like Frerotte” category?

Garcia

…falls into a different category (I used the maximum number of poll answers and didn’t have room for "someone good enough but too old to be counted on for the next 3-5 years), and I don’t think TB will let him go anyway. He definitely would have been a great option a few years ago, and I’ve always thought that he was a bit underrated.

Really, since Booty and/or TJ aren’t realistic candidates for 2009, then the Vikings will have already wasted two first-day picks on non-solutions for their QB quandary (and lost a seventh-round bargain in Tyler Thigpen so that they could hold onto veteran 2nd and 3rd string options Holcomb and Bollinger for one year). It is very important that the starting QB in 2009 be able to lead the team for 3-5 years rather than to simply serve as a one-year trial stopgap.

Cassell will be looking for a big contract. I am not comfortable giving a big contract to a kid who is still unproven, a kid who has what 4 games under his belt since high school? Heck Gus had a couple good games for the Vikes serving as Cullpepper’s backup. Might as well go with Booty if you believe in Cassel.

It’s going to be a veteran. McNabb or Garcia while they continue to nurture Booty.

as Culpepper throws an awful pick-6

Its tough to evaluate Cassell when he has a pretty good surrounding team, Bellichek and staff game planning and coaching and receivers like Wes Welker and uh, Randy Moss to chuck it to. He could be good though.

McNabb please. Like I’ve been saying in other topics, McNabb is Childress’s groomed QB. He should be able to do all the stuff that Childress expects from a QB, there should be no excuse for terrible playcalling with McNabb under center. Yeah, he’s had a few bad games lately, but it’s not like he’s getting alot of help in Philly. I just hope we don’t trade for him for anything higher than a 4th rounder.

Do I think he’ll solve all the team’s woes? No. But I do think he’d be able to help this team make a much stronger superbowl push, and he has a few more years under his belt, meaning more time for us to find a future QB/for Jackson to mature.

I think a competent quarterback puts this team on an elite level. Garcia, McNabb … anyone ABOVE average and all of the heavens will open and we shall ascend to the promised land.

If Cassel keeps playing like he has been playing, he’ll get a big contract, and he’ll deserve it. In his first starts since high school, he’s throwing 66% completions for 2615 yards, 13 TDs and 8 ints. Imagine what he’ll do with some more starts under his belt after seeing more pro defenses. Now granted, he’ll be coached a lot less skillfully on his new team (and a hell of a lot less skillfully if that new team is coached by Childress) but what more can you ask for from a first time starter? What did Jackson do in as many games?

I know, Jackson didn’t have Moss and Welker. True, but Cassel doesn’t have AP and Taylor either.

Anyway, I think the whole QB debate is moot if we have Childress again next season. It doesn’t really matter who the QB is when you’re playing in this guy’s prevent offense.

You'll see some texas in minnesota!

I wouldn’t be surprised if we brought colt mccoy in! We’ll get a rookie… such a vikings move. or we’ll get a big big big signing on someone like matt cassel and have a matt schuab… bust! lol

Reality Check, Guys

Um, Cassel won’t be leaving New England, in my opinion. The PAts will pay him as a very important insurance policy against Brady reinjuring his knee. I think Cassel will sign a one-year deal or perhaps a multi-year deal because it is not far-fetched to think Brady could go down again for an extended period.

McNabb makes sense for obvious reasons, and at his age he is a 2-year solution at best, so it is not exciting to me.

Garcia may be easiest to acquire, but at his age I would be very concerned. Either Garcia or McNabb will likely be moving on, and it is a coin flip as to which one will remain productive much longer. Both have had some injuries, so we need a solid #2. If I were the Vike’s brass, I would dump salary and /or try to trade a few vets for draft picks and select the best QB available in a thin crop of QB’s. Just don’t pick another “project” like the kids we have!!

An off-season trade will probably bring the Vikes someone new to pilot the hsip. Whoever it is, I hope they will be playing for a new set of coaches, especially Head Coach and Special Teams!

Again … you can’t give Cassel a big contract. I am sorry he is still unproven and while his QB rating is 82 (slight improvement over TJ or Gus) I have to wonder how much of that margin is Patriots related.

Why is Jeff Garcia never on these polls??? He is UFA and might be a good 1 year plug while grooming Booty or another draftee.

One more thing … I for one at this point in time am cheering for and have hope for Tavaris. These polls (while intriguing) suggest negativity towards TJ. I think one will have all off season for this but for now we should be cheering for this guy (TJ).

Man … yall are gonna name me TJ fanboy pretty soon.
