Why not Garcia?
Obviously an above average QB under center increases our chances of success, and obviously Gus is not going to be our solution.
I had read many posts on here suggesting Matt Cassel is our best bet - that makes me really nervous since is still very unproven and will want a big contract. Some other posts want McNabb (meh sure), others suggest Vick (who let the dogs out!), or draft a QB ( Booty failed already?).
Garcia looked pretty good in S.F, Philly, and with Tampa in every season I can remember. He is an UFA this offseason, a good pocket passer, and as he demonstrated against our beloved purple recently he is still mobile in the pocket when need be.
Why not Garcia in 09?

Garcia is a good pick
but he’s not a Franchise QB. He wants to be a starter, but I don’t know any team that’ll sign him to be such.
Garcia and Warner are both in the same boat. Excellent passers who get the job done week-in and week-out, but are both getting up there in age. Drafting a QB, getting rid of Gus-Gus and signing Garcia on the notion he “can compete for the starting job” would be the best option. Do what Arizona did, we have the other pieces of the puzzle already in place.

your absolutely right!!! we need to draft a good QB. . not a “raw” development guy. . !
Minnesota Vikings and Liverpool F.C the two greatest sport teams ever.

“but he’s not a Franchise QB. He wants to be a starter”
… he was a pro bowl qaurterback last year and just dismantled our team! He is definetely above average and would be the best starter we have had here in … alot of years.
"he may be an option for a year, maybe two " … EXACTLY!

In my opinion a 1-2 year solution is what we need. An above average solution who could get us one or tw….one superbowl while Booty and Jackson have time to cultivate or while we draft more talent at QB position. Would that be so bad?
Garcia is better than any qb we have had here in the last ten years and is automatically your starter week 1 2009 no question, competition, doubt. McNabb had a good game in Philly and you can’t listen to the media, McNabb is still loved b the decision makers and they aren’t going to let him walk.

Anyone looks better than what we’ve gotten used to under Childress. We’ll have options, whether it’s through trades, draft, or FA signing. It’s just a matter of pulling the trigger, and I don’t think even our front office would be dumb enough to go with the same formula at QB for a fourth straight season. That would amount to massive firings imo.
I don’t think Cassel is a sure fire answer to ours or anyone else’s QB problem, but he looks like a lot safer bet than what we’ve been going with. We need major upgrades at the most important position on the field. Jackson and Booty can stick around and try to become starters someday but it’s clear that our starter for next season isn’t on the roster right now.
I think McNabb can be had if our deciders want him. I don’t want to trade away another entire draft like we did for Allen, but a second rounder would be fine. Isn’t that what the Jets gave up for Favre? Anyway, he’s perfect for us and we should try to do whatever we can to get it done imo.
we could do worse than Garcia but one of these seasons, the years will finally catch up to him and it shouldn’t be long. He seems more like the end of the road guy like Brad Johnson and Gus Frerotte were and are.
Final Piece of the Puzzle
Last year, everyone in the NFL knew the Vikings were a franchise QB away from the Super Bowl. I heard head coach after head coach make that assessment, and watched them ensure that we didn’t get the QB we needed. Why would they want to help another team become dominant?
That being said, the puzzle can still be completed. Garcia would be a great choice, as would Warner. For a couple years, maybe three, while our other options got up to speed, they’d be perfect. Pennington would have been a perfect fit but that ship has sailed. Garcia would be a good replacement for Gus.
The cap is always an issue, but for a franchise QB, the Vikes should work out a deal somewhere, somehow, to make it happen.
If Cassel can be brought in as well, he could learn from Garcia, maybe split some time, but Cassel could be the answer. That would leave us with having the delightful choice of who to get rid of; TJ or Booty.
If all else fails, we’re down to that wonderful shot in the near-dark, trying to draft the next hot NFL QB. Not a game we’ve played very well, lately.
There are no guarantees with bringing in a free agent veteran, most of those types of guys are just Gus 2.0….looking for that last signing bonus before retirement in 2-3 years. I suppose a ‘big’ name like McNabb or Cassel would create some inital excitement but I don’t see any of them as THE guy to lead the Vikes to greater things. Vick…..let’s not even go there unless the Vikings are planning on having Tylenol as their major sponsor.
I have to believe that the draft is the best option for getting someone for the future and more than just a 2 year free agent hired gun. Yes, the draft with QB’s can be hit and miss but it seems worth the risk to me. I think Colt McCoy from Texas could be a good NFL qb or even some lesser known like that kid Davis from Ball St could be a surprise. Look at the job Matt Ryan is doing this year in Atlanta. He wasn’t a huge name in the draft, but he has stepped right in and doing a great job.
So, I suppose next year will indeed bring in some veteran free agent….fine, let him fill in until they can get one of the young guys ready. Let Gus go get his AARP card, goodbye Gus. Jackson, well…unless he turns his game around somehow I only see the Vikes keeping him as a backup. Booty, I doubt he will make the squad next year if they bring in a free agent and draft another qb. Remember, he almost didn’t even make the team this year barely beating out Bollinger….uhhh.
The draft will be interesting. I hope they can land a qb in the first or second rounds, but they need a OL also to fix that Hicks/Cook debacle.
Good luck Vikes!
I completely agree with this post. I’m worried about the future of this OL as well.
This line, however, cannot be right.
“Look at the job Matt Ryan is doing this year in Atlanta. He wasn’t a huge name in the draft, but he has stepped right in and doing a great job.”
The man was a big name from day 1 of his senior season. He wasn’t projected to go as high until midway through the season, but a man that went 3rd in the draft and signed a 70+MM deal, IS a huge name. He’s doing just fine by the way. Meanwhile, Ol’ GusGus is pissin me off cause he looks like a NYC sewer rat that took a stick of butter, applied it to his hairline, and promptly combed backwards. That and he’s always getting picked…
ok, you got me on the ‘big name’ sentence….but my point is that I feel better about drafting a young qb rather than laying another couple of seasons in the hands of another old veteran qb that is just another team’s headache(McNabb). I am impressed by the job Ryan is doing in ATL and it just goes to show that a young guy CAN come in and get the job done if he is a smart and talented player(sorry TJ, you don’t fit into that catagory).
JDB/Graham Harrell
I’m not entirely convinced JDB won’t work. He clearly needs time to adjust to the pro game, but we haven’t (and won’t) see anything from him this year. What do you guys think about drafting Graham Harrell from Texas Tech? Check out his ESPN profile here: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=160425 Granted, the passing stats are gaudy from TT’s passing attack, but his completion consistency is a solid 71.5%, 41 TDs to 7 INTs. The couple times I watched him I was impressed with his composure and accuracy. Also, as a senior he is sure to enter the draft.
