Can DeAngelo Hall play zone?
Does one else feel like the Vikings need to find someone to play oppisite Antoine "I will carry this team if i have to" Winfield? The Raiders are going to release Hall. I am really up in the air if it is worth the risk to sign him. I know he has been over rated, but he can't be any worse then what they get out of Cedic "10 yard cushion" Griffin. Anyone have thoughts on this?

ugh.... seriously...
Griffin is a physical, man coverage corner and a valuable one at that. If you paid any attention to his play against andre johnson last week, you will have noticed that his aggressive style slowed Johnson down (minus the TD that was a great throw). People don’t seem to understand the intention behind zone coverage. Griffin doesn’t play like that because he wants to, he gives them that cushion because the coaches tell him to.
Although Hall is a tempting addition, we are just fine with Griffin being the guy we can go to for man coverage on a dynamic receiver when we need it. We have Antoine at one corner and Griffin is a great, young compliment that is going to learn how to play more aggressive zone coverage. Spend money on a new right tackle.

Agreed
we could use a new right tackle. every time we get a false start, it’s ALWAYS ryan cook. Also, griffin isn’t always good, but he’s had some pretty big plays, and I think he could be a great corner, maybe even by next year.

Dude
Deangalo is over the hill, complains and talks too much, and is a hot head, which is not something we need. Cedric, although can be off at times, plays physical football, and kept Andre Johnson, the best receiver in the league in check. I think with Madieu on his side, he will improve, and lets not forget that he’s good against the run. Also we should take in account that with Antoine on the opposite side, Cedric is always the first read, he’s prone to being thrown to often, and considering that he’s done a descent job. I’m not saying he’s a perfect corner, but we’re not losing because of him.

Hall is great in zone
He just struggles with man-to-man. He would be a phenomenal addition. He’d probably have renewed energy playing for a decent team too.

Hall struggled in Oakland's Man scheme
DeAngelo Hall is not a bad CB. He was in the worst possible situation being in Oakland. He had played zone in Atlanta and was allowed to get creative in space. That is the scheme that allowed him to be a two time pro-bowler. In Oakland’s horrendous man scheme he was on an island that got thrown to constantly. With Nmandi Asmougha on the other side teams would only throw to Hall’s side. He proved he couldnt grasp the man scheme and was repeatedly burned. I dont know how much Hall would be asking in terms of contract and length but, it is definitely worth a look into from the brass…

I think if we can get Hall cheap, then we take a shot at him. Griffin does have a lot of upside, but ever since his rookie year he has been declining. Have DeAnglo and Hall compete for the 2nd spot with the other playing the nickle. Nonetheless, Winfield is getting up there in years so it will end up being a good move if Hall becomes a solid contributor, and/or Griffin shows he can be a lockdown corner. Because nobody knows where Marcus McCauley is at. Charles Gordon doesn’t have the upside. And Sapp is a journeyman.
