Allen Fined $50,000; Astroglide Likely Not Used
Today's entry into the "what a freaking joke" file:
The NFL just announced that defensive end Jared Allen was fined $50,000 for “two plays considered roughing the passer,” according to an NFL spokesman.
“In both instances, he struck the opposing quarterback below the knee area,” a spokesperson said in an email.
Allen hit Texans quarterback Matt Schaub both times. Schaub suffered a torn MCL on one of the hits in the first half. Texans coach Gary Kubiak and Schaub both said they thought the hits were illegal and cheap shots.
"Two plays considered roughing the passer," huh? Does anyone else remember Jared Allen getting flagged for a roughing the passer penalty last Sunday, let alone two?
Yeah, me either.
What a joke. Once again, Roger Goodell has his head jammed firmly in his posterior.
Oh, and Allen is also listed as doubtful for Sunday's game with Green Bay. Nobody from the Texans was fined for injuring Allen's shoulder. . .which, given this precedent, is fairly amazing.
In fact, as long as I'm here, let me toss out the official injury reports (as of now) for Sunday's game. We'll start with Green Bay:
Nobody worth discussing here, if for no other reason than they all play for the Green Bay Packers.
And Minnesota's injury report:
Mills and Herron are apparently both back at practice this week after being inactive for last week's contest. Should be interesting to see who's going to be inactive this week.
More on everything tomorrow, ladies and gentlemen. Until then, have a good rest of your Friday!

Travesty
I cannot believe that the NFL can fine a player for a play, that was not in the least bit flagrant, that a flag was not thrown on.
Let them play the damn game, Goodell!

Looks to me
That Allen falls, brings his arms in and tucks his helmet in when he realizes K.Will is giving the QB a gentel nudge downward.Seems to me the QBs backwards momentum is what causes contact not Allens forward movement. If watch QB lands on top of Allen ,then clears him.Allen has already stopped forward movement b4 contact.

Defining moment
The league is saying that Allen hit below at the knee or below and that is illegal and should have been flagged. The fact that he wasn’t is totally irrelevant. The league can now penalize as a direct result of whining after the game, or because it has a bur up its arse.
What this will do however is indicate to defensive linemen that once they are on the ground, they are done unless they can get fully upright to hit a fragile quarterback above the knees and below the head. (Sort of sounds like a strike zone doesn’t it?)
Note that is doesn’t rule out a grab at the knees or below. (As long as the player doesn’t pull the legs against his shoulder pads or helmet because that might then constitute a hit.)
Goodell wears a skirt.
It may take a village to raise a child, but it takes a Viking to raze a village.

The flag?
That is just it. If the refs saw no reason to throw a flag how in the world can you come back and fine player in question 50 grand?
