MY THOUGHTS FOR AN UNDERDOG

Last night in our game thread I said that I was "hoping" Gus would have a great game.  Well, after the last few games, I was actually right! Before this season I never liked or payed much attention to Gus Frerotte.  When Minnesota decided to pick him in the off-season I was a little dissapointed.

Anyone who has read any of my comments or blogs should know by now that i'm not the biggest Tavaris Jackson fan.  However, I do blame that bald headed bastard for Jackson's NFL demise as a Viking.  This kid should have never been held on a pedistol.  He throw only 9 TD in his year and half of play time.  Too bad Childress and company didn't notice this earlier and maybe we could've pick up someone like Pennington when the Jets screwed him over for Favre.

Which brings me to my point.  When Gus was hit way late and the moron refs didn't call it, I was shocked to see some (not pointing fingers) hoping Gus would be hurt, down and out, swept under the rug, for T-Jack to come take another hack.  I've seen this on some of the comments to.  I'm discouraged by this because I look at this man as some what of a saviour to this team.  Granted Peterson is the show and when he's not in Taylor helps as well, but last year when Peterson went down, our Francise QB didn't even take command.  (I'm hoping someone on here has the stats for how many TD's T-Jack threw when Adrian was sidelined last year for a few games.  I'm pretty sure he didn't have too many, if any at all!)  My only hope is that we as fans stay off his back for a little while and realize whether anyone likes it or not Gus helped us get to first place last night.  Something Johnson and Tavaris didn't achieve in the past two years.  I'm not hoping for some long term deal with Gus, but I'm glad to call him a first place QB for us now.  Everyone doubts an underdog and hopefully this underdog turns this season into something we haven't seen in many years.  Hopefully it bites all who oppose in their asses.

Now, I know a lot of people on here will disagree which is your right, but look at where we are right now!  It's not the coaching I can tell you that.  Our Defense is strong and our offense does need some work still, but first place is where we stand.  The north is ours!!!

GUS, I GOT YOUR BACK.

I’m not a Gus hater at all, he has done what is needed the past couple games and that is to NOT loose the games for us. His job isn’t to really lead or win the game but rather to just manage the game and not give it away(like in the first Bears-Vikes game). Sure, it would be great to see Gus keep up the good work. Smart play calling can help him out by mixing things up. Using Chester Taylor as a fresh set of legs and a great 3rd down option out of the backfield is a good move. Moves like that help Gus keep it simple and not have to make that pinpoint-in between 3 defenders type of throws.
The refs not calling that late hit was absolute BS. Do you think that same play would be a flag if the qb back there was named Manning, Favre, or some other ‘big’ name? With all the fines against our D line players for hits, I hope the league will at least drop a fine on the Bears’ D lineman. You are right, that’s not the way I would want to see Jackson back into the lineup.

Let’s see, when AP was hurt, we played… the Giants and the Raiders if I’m not mistaken. I’m doing this off the top of my head, but I know he threw at least one TD in the Giants the game, the second play of the offense, and didn’t get the ball back much because the defense kept picking Eli off, and in the Raiders game…. Chester had an AP like day and scored, I think, 3 TDs, and Jackson might have had one also.

So its not like he did terrible, and I don’t think its fair to start saying Jackson didn’t get anything done when AD was injured because A) we won the games he was out, and B) Gus hasn’t ever had to carry the team on his back. In fact, he’s never carried the team on his back. Jackson at least had that Denver game last year where he tied it up and ran in two two-point conversions himself.

I don’t think Gus is the saviour of this team at all. He’s cost us a couple victories, and when we win he’s usually only servicable at best. A decent option. Its not as though he’s the sole reason for our record right now. . . Well. He is, in a way. Those 4 picks against the Bears last time killed us.

Those 4 pics against the Bears

also came with 41 points. Special teams beat us that game.

If you look at the big picture instead of just seeing Gus as the “old man who has always been second string”. How many times did we reach the redzone against indy? Bet your ass Gus would have at least threw a TD in one of those redzone attempts.

My point is that I don’t want to hear fellow “Vikings fans” cheering for Jackson to be put in, only because, our starter got hurt. It’s not right.

I also said Jackson didn’t take command. He never had command and he looked horrible on the field. He wasn’t comfortable in the pocket and always ran the ball. He’s got a decent arm but never hit his targets. I know you’ll still find something wrong with my opinion, but look at the BIG PICTURE. First place for the first time in how long? With Jackson, at best, we would be just above the lions, sitting at third.

Those four pics are the only thing you must have seen with that first bear game. At least Jepp remembers the special team being less than on point that day.
