Got Questions for the Arizona Cardinals?
I've moved this to the front page so that any questions for CGolden wouldn't be missed. - Gonzo
Hey Daily Norseman,
(This is earlier than I normally do these each week, but the enormity of this game has all of us stirred up and ready to talk Vikings.)
Cgolden from Revenge of the Birds here, to answer any and all questions that you guys have about the Arizona Cardinals.
I may not be the dali-lama but I'll do my best to shoot it to you straight. So I'm here to answer your questions - and I expect a few ROTB-ers will migrate over to discuss the upcoming Vikes/Cardinals game as well. Anything you got, fire away - I'm here to share and learn.
I'm looking forward to an entertaining Cardinals/Vikes game this weekend. Should be fun.
This FanPost was created by a registered user of The Daily Norseman, and does not necessarily reflect the views of the staff of the site. However, since this is a community, that view is no less important.

Will the Cards even use a halfback?
Why not 4 wide shotgun all game? That’s what I’d do. It would tire our pass rush out and we both know who wins the match up of receivers versus DBs.

can I hire you as our OC?
You’re pretty much right on, our running game is futile. And I’d imagine it’ll be worse than normal this week, if that’s possible. I will say that I think the coaches have accepted that and it’s basically used as a ploy to try and keep defenses honest. We’ve talked at length about possible ways to fix the running game, but the talk basically involves either bad personnel (namely OL) or changing the schemes which would take away from the passing game.

That would work for a little bit but eventually the defense would catch on. If the Williams tackles play expect to see that formation a lot on Sunday.

Kurt Warner...
What is he doing differently to not fumble so much this season? Better protection? Healthy?
Also, what did the Jets do to you guys in that one half?
PS. You’re welcome for L Fitz.

KW
The coaching staff supposedly beat ‘ball protection’ into his brain during the off season (I believe some form of chinese water torture was involved) and for the most part it’s working. He still has his moments where KW-syndrome will take over (NYJ and PHI games) and they tend to happen when a team can put pressure on the QB without blitzing (something I hear you guys excel at). Warner’s a jedi at defeating the blitz but passing rushing ends still haunt his dreams.
The Jets were able to get to Warner without blitzing and once the turnover merry-go-round starts, it’s hard for him to shut it off.

He’s got the gloves. That has really improved his ball security. The main point is the coaching staff has forced Kurt to get rid of the ball quickly.
The Jets game was a nightmare. Plain and simple, Kurt went back to his old ways that game.

I sure hope not
I’ve gone from fully expecting him to leave (in training camp) to praying every night that he stays. Our GM has made some comments recently that he still thinks they’ll figure everything out and I certainly hope he’s right.
Trade All-Day for Q straight up?

not even close.
I may love what bolden has to offer in the passing game. he is one of the top 5 recievers in the league. but AP is the best running back in the league, and all things being equal, good running backs are better then good recievers. plus, AP still has some years left in his contract.

Very Unlikely...
Since he has two years left on his contract. If they wouldnt trade him this offseason, I dont see why they would after this year. My guess is with the success they find this year, he will be much more likely to want to stay and sign a long-term deal.

A question for the future...
what is Leinarts future in AZ? will you guys persue KW after the season, or will it finaly be sink or swim time for the Trojan?
If you resign KW, is Leinart expendable/available for a trade? possibly to a team with purple as its colors?

Thats a tough one. Most think we will try to get Kurt to a 1-2 year deal after this year. The team is hoping Matt is willing to stay and learn more from Kurt but if we resign Warner, I see Lienart wanting out.

piggy backing off what Andrew has said
I think KW will be back next year with a 2 year deal and he’ll be the starter in 2009. I’d look for Leinart to take over in 2010 if KW stays healthy all of next year. I don’t think Leinart will go anywhere. He may want out but he’s seen Boldin and Edge try and fail. The Cardinals management isn’t in the business of granting players wishes. It’s not what we expected when he was drafted but at least for now it’s working.
Well how about Leinart for AP straight up? (again, I kid)

The obvious-
What, in your opinion, is your chances of stopping AD doing what AD does to people? That and yes our team is ridiculous when playing with the lead. Allen=reincarnation of Chuck Norris with a mullet.

Well its going to be tough. I dug up an interesting stat about AD, that he’s only averging 86 rushing YPG on the road and 145 at home. Im not sure how much you know about the Cards but we have a pretty decent run defense. Not sure what schemes they will try but if we stop him, I really cant picture Jackson or Frerotte beating us through the air.

cautiously optimistic?
I’d say knowing that AP is driving force behind the Viking offense, they’ll obviously load up at the line of scrimmage and try to make who ever is at QB try to beat them. The Cardinals run D is 12th in the league (good but nothing great), but they have the ability to ‘contain’ opposing running games. They did hold the Giants to 87 yards (3.2 ypc) just three weeks ago, so it’s possible.

Bears tried that
And we shredded them apart two weeks ago. I’d say this game is Vikes win if we control both lines of scrimmage, and Cards win if Warner has enough time.

Honestly, who do you see winning this game? And do you think the loss of the Williams wall will cause you guys to run more, or will you pretty much stick to being pass-happy?

honestly.....
With the Cardinals at home, I expect them to win. They’re a completely different team in their own stadium and they’ve only lost three games there in the past two seasons. I think it’ll be a good game but if the Cardinals don’t win, I’ll be disappointed.
As for the Williams Wall, I don’t think that’ll effect the Cardinals running game much. The Vikings could fly their cheerleaders down and start them at defensive tackle and the Cardinals would still struggle. Their absence would make a huge difference in the passing game though. Pat is a heck of a pass rusher for his size and their presence ensures that an offensive line can’t truly focus on Jared Allen. If they’re out and the Vikings have to blitz KW to apply pressure, it would be a huge advantage for the Cardinals, IMO.

I think you mean,
Kevin. he is a very good pass rusher, the best DT to rush the QB we’ve had since john randle.

Phat Pat
Comes out on most pass rushing plays. We usually put Brian Robison at D Tackle and the kid can ball. Although, he got his knee scoped last week and probably wont be playing.

Cards RBs
Will the Cards use Edge again this weekend? JJ has been doing pretty well in that backup/third down roll in place of Hightower but do you think Edge still has something to prove? I still see Hightower as the guy when the Cards get inside the 10, if they decide to actually try a running play. It’s hard to believe that Edge doesn’t still have something left in the tank. The Cards will have a hard time running on the Vikes, just like most teams. If Warner has time to throw those slants, it will be a long day for the Vikes LBs and DBs.

Edge
Edge gets used about 2 times a game so dont expect much from him. JJ is the speedy RB that gets the screens or quick running plays. Hightower is the power back that CAN play if they run in an I-formation. Unfortunately they dont and he doesnt get the holes he needs to break off chunks of yardage.

Fitz is awsome
Have to give some props to Fitz for being not only a Pro Bowl WR, but a good guy. He spent his day off yesterday with a second grader for the ‘take a NFL player to school’ day. It’s always refreshing to hear about one of the GOOD guys in the league for a change instead of the knuckleheads that have been in the news lately.

Do you feel Kurt Warner has the Stamina to make it through a full season? And the playoffs?
As a follow-up, if the Cardinals win this week, do you expect them to sit their starters to give them time off until the playoffs?

Well first of all, everybody was saying he wouldnt make it and look how far he’s went. Only 3 games left and no signs of slowing down. So of course I see him making it all the way. Only way they rest starters is if all hope is lost at locking up the #3 seed or higher.

One more. Do you feel that the Cardinals’ ability is representative of their record, or is it the result of their division? And how far are they going to get in the playoffs do you think?

Both
We have beat the Cowboys, Dolphins, and Bills outside of the division. We did beat up on the divison being 5-0 so far. But we did compete with others as well. We lost by a combined 19 points to the Redskins, Panthers, and Giants. I could ask the same to you having the Lions in your division, Packers arent that good this year also lol.

Well, obviously, the Lions give us some trouble. Don’t ask me why. But I don’t think it compares to 49ers, St. Louis and Seahawks (at least this year for some reason) =P

playoffs?!? You wanna talk about playoffs?!?
Sorry, I just couldn’t resist. Seriously though, I expect the Cardinals to win at least one game in the playoffs. If they can do that then the second game would be on the road against either the Giants or Panthers and I’d say both games would be extremely difficult.
