One season at a time fellas!!!
Minnesota fans, whether you live there or not, know the Vikings' history all to well. We've been to four SB's and haven't even one under our belts. In recent years we've been to two NFC championship games and lost both. One, the dreaded 98 NFC championship game and the slaughter the Giants gave us in 2000.
I know how the rest of you feel. It's quite depressing but look at us this year. 9-5 and the third best team in the NFC. In other words, I like our chances this year. Whether Gus or Jackson I feel that both men have proved to be successful no matter what some may say. Just look at the record. T-Jack has come into his own the last two games and has been in control both outings, thus turning opinions around about him.
I myself have been hard on Jackson for his first two starts of the season, but then I think, this is now and those two games seem old history. The fact of the matter is this. Minnesota fans are used to being disappointed and this makes our heads strong about what should be done for next season. Don't fear fellow fans, I think we may have something going for us this year. We've got two tough games ahead and we should take them one at a time. We should'nt be worried who our QB will be next year or who will Coach the team next year.
Brad Childress has staind some of us and may not earn our respect but you've gotta see the big picture. The man is turning the team around. Yes, he's made mistakes but let's not jump the gun. Some of us are already talking of 2009 but why?
We've got two winning QB's on the team. We've got the best running back this year and C. Taylor is a force to reckon with. Our run defense is feared and our secondary is actually proving themselves. We have a tough TE and some good receivers. Why question it anymore? It is what it is.
The moral of this is that we need to praise our team at this time of the season. Let's sit back and enjoy the ride. We will prevail and we will stand the test of time. We are the Vikings we hope for nothing but wish for everything. I think this year our wish will come true and you see us on top. Stay possitive and stay true to the purple!

did you say 2 winning qb's?
we have a hopeful prospect and an old journeyman. we need a good qb and then we will truely be the dominant force in the nfc. i haven’t given up on this year by any stretch of the imagination. i think we have a real shot. i think that every year. it could happen. nobody gave the giants a shot last year and look what they did.

Obviously...
meaning two winning QB’s is just that!
This is the year as gonzo2 put it.
This is how we should feel every game. Settle for nothing less than a purple victory!

This Team Is Special...
with not only turning it’s season around by going 8-2 in it’s last 10 games but with the heart they’ve shown by overcoming adversity to do it. I have a feeling we’ll have more than just a few reasons to remember this edition of the Vikes as the years go by.

2 weeks
You have a good positive attitude, there is no questioning that! I’m right there with you about the Vikes having a chance this year to surprise us in the playoffs. But I think the next 2 weeks will show us if we can truly be excited or if this year is just a crap shoot away from being over. Let’s face it, this deal isn’t done yet and we haven’t won the division and locked up a playoff birth.
I hope the VIkes stay focused and win Sunday and don’t sit back and hope for a Bears’ loss because all that will get them is a seat in front of a tv come playoff time. I hope this all doesn’t come down to the last week of the season against the Giants….1, because it will be a tough game even if the Giants are resting starters….and 2, it would suck for the Vikes to need the win and not the Giants and have to show our playbook to them and possibly face them a couple weeks later in the playoffs.
Just beat Atlanta boys, then the Giants game is just a scrimmage for the reserves.

????????
I have no idea what to do with all this positivity. Where’s the paranoia and irrational fear? Where’s the fatalistic defeatism that is the hallmark of so many a purple fan? The post starts out like it’s supposed to, with sad laments of four lost super bowls and flashbacks to our fallen perfect kicker and 41-donut. But then the whole thing unravels.
Brad Childress is righting the ship? We have two winning QBs? These are not the song of the purple faithful.
Tell me the story of the Hershal Walker trade and the dynasty that could have been. Let me relive the Les Steckel year again and again in my mind and relish the perfect agony. For I am a Vikings fan and that is the cross I bear. I wear my embittered purple heart on my sleeve as a badge of honor, because I am no simple band wagon jumper. I am one of the many damned passengers on this dragon headed ghost ship. And while the journey may tear at my heart I will shriek at the world and feel the chill run down its spine. Glory, we may never taste, but we guard her gates and those that would claim it will have to match our steel.
As the Giants learned. They have grappled with us on two memorable occasions recently that ended with a score of 41-0. Ironically in victory over the Purple they would go on to lose the prize. When humbled by us they would learn the lessons needed to emerge victorious.
This is only one example of our Vikings lore. To those that learn the subtle art of Purple Pain it can be a rich and rewarding experience. But I must warn you “vikingfiend” woe be unto those that are lured into the siren song of false hope and optimism. That way lies madness and I would save you that pain my brother.

Words to live by
You speak the truth, dwarg. Your rant should be printed, framed and hung (hanged?) over every TV of every Viking fatalist; from the Metrodome to Valhalla.

If we keep living with past regrets...
Than we deserve to be losers. With each season you progress and this is a better season than the last two, right? How may we cry to the heavens when we’ve got something going. Take nothing for granted and wish for the very best and that is NOW at 9-5.
If you choose to let the past haunt you then so be it, but i’m moving on to better things with the purple and no matter what I stand by them and never ever say they will lose. If the fans don’t show support and let the past stick with them how can our team progress? We are the strongest support system and if we give up on them, the team might as well give up to. Win, lose or drawl they entertain every week and to keep your opinion about a team that lacked in past superbowls is just negative. I won’t be the fan who is always unhappy with past superbowl blunders. I’m the fan who says we are strong and will prevail. VIkings never say die and never pity themselves.

You're Only Going Back...
as far as the Les Steckel year??? I’ve been following this team through the many triumphs (and there were more than a few) and tragedies almost 40 years and counting. The Super Bowl loss to Kansas City (only to see our team wear their ass out 27-10 the following year in the opening game). The upset the following year by the 49ers in the divisional playoffs and having the MVP in Alan Page in 1971 only to lose to the Cowboys at home on Christmas Day 20-12 and get knocked out again. The joy of bringing Fran Tarkenton back home the next year only to see us slip to 7-7 and miss the playoffs (the only year we missed from 1968-1978). The dominant teams of the next few years that always seemed to fall one game short. The worst no-call on offensive pass interference ever in the “Hell Mary” game (and yes, I considered it poetic justice that the referee got nailed with a beer bottle after the game, I’d still like to find that guy and give him a medal for doing it). Keep in mind that the team that was robbed on that play only lost two games that year…31-30 and 10-7. The huge underdog team that went into the playoffs a few years later against the Eagles and took a 14-0 lead only to lose in the end by turnovers. I could go on and on about heartaches by this team but you know something? Every Fall I’m going to be right back in front of the TV watching MY team live or die with the optimism that this year maybe we’ll get over that hump and finally bring the championship home. I know that you mean well dwarg, but I must now warn you…be careful how you toss the word “bandwagon” around. We’re all diehard fans and we’ve all got the purple scars to prove it.

Fan since forever
I too go back to the late 60’s. I remember our one and only NFL championship. Joe Kapp leaping a Clev. defender is a classic moment. We lost the SB that year to the Chiefs, but the leagues had not yet merged. I remember our dominance over the Central division. I remember the greatest D-line in the history of the franchise and arguably the league. (that would be Page, Eller, Marshall & Larsen) Later I remember Rashad’s catch of the Hail Mary to propel us into the play-offs in the late 70’s (maybe 1980).
I love my purple and have always cheered them on thru thick and thin. The last 20 years of comedy are sometimes funny, sometimes embarrassing and sometimes sad. To be cautious and harangue about our close calls is not a sign of disloyalty, but of frustration. When we finally win it all, (hopefully in my lifetime) that will cleanse all old wounds and propel us all into a new age.
I would love that time to be this year. Go Purple.
Go Purple!

that is unbelievably pessimistic.
what is the point in being a Vikings fan if your mindset is: “Glory, we may never taste, but we guard her gates and those that would claim it will have to match our steel”?
I am right there with you as far as the pains go. My dad still tells me all about Drew Pearson’s push off and I remembery crying as a 9 year old after the 98-99 NFC championship (“damnit”-How I Met Your Mother).
But really, I’m always hoping for a Superbowl and I believe that any true Vikings fan looks forward to that day that will inevitably come.

I’ve got some pessimism for you: we haven’t made the playoffs yet.
If we do make them, we have as good a shot as most teams in the playoffs to win. It’s all about who’s hot and a lucky bounce here and there once you’re in, as the Giants proved last year. Sure, they had a lot of things going for them as a team as well, but most of us don’t delude ourselves into thinking they were as good as the Patriots.
We’ve got a great pair of running backs, a very solid defense, a seemingly hot hand at QB, a serviceable offensive line, and a little more competence at gameplanning lately. That is actually a pretty good foundation for a playoff run when you think about it.
But just as we looked past the Falcons in the 99 NFC CG, let’s not look past them now either. If we don’t win another game, we have to pray for Chicago to lose both of theirs too. They’re playing the Packers and Texans, we’re playing a hungry playoff hopeful and the reigning Super Bowl champs.
I’m not thinking about next season yet. It’s still all the next game.

I'm Impressed
Well said gentleman. Although it appears the sarcasm of my first post wasn’t immediately apparent. My point was that it’s very rare to see such a positive post here—thus my talk about the paranoia, irrational fear and fatalistic defeatism that is usually so prevalent on these forums. Just look at the posts after this Falcons game. I actually consider myself pretty positive in terms of Vikings fans.
There’s something about the game of football that encourages bipolar disorder in fans. But in Vikings country the lows seem so much lower than the highs are high.
I was actually making fun of those people that would rather sit around crying about past mistakes and blown calls than looking forward to what’s ahead. It’s nice to find a little cluster of fans willing to stand up for their team… or at least suspend disbelief long enough enjoy the game. Although, I may use the phrase, “the art of purple pain” again because I like it.
I watch the games at a local sports bar and am constantly amazed at the amount of swearing, and how little knowledge of the sport, and our team, most of my bar mates seem to have. It would be a pleasure to watch a game with you all.
