From the NFL
"You and you alone are responsible for what goes into your body," the policy states. "Claiming that you used only legally available nutritional supplements will not help you in an appeal … Even if they are bought over-the-counter from a known establishment, there is currently no way to be sure that they contain the ingredients listed on the packaging or have not been tainted with prohibited substances … If you take these products, you do so AT YOUR OWN RISK!
With respect to the question of whether a specific warning should have been given regarding Star Caps, the policy does not set forth an obligation to issue specific warnings about specific products and no testimony suggests that the NFL and NFLPA have ever contemplated imposing such a requirement on Dr. Lombardo, who oversees the development of education materials on steroids. In keeping with that responsibility, the NFL, NFLPA, and Dr. Lombardo have emphasized the need for extreme caution in the use of any supplement, including weight reduction products, have established a Hotline for players to call for information regarding supplements, have established a Supplement Certification program with EAS to provide players with supplements that are free of banned substances, and have, in conjunction with reinforcing the strict liability rule, repeatedly warned players about the dangers of unregulated and inaccurately labeled dietary supplements. In the past, players have been suspended for using dietary supplements that contained a banned substance.
The suspensions were fair under the rules.

from the NFL's release
two notifications specifically mentioning Star Caps were sent on December 19, 2006. One was sent to the presidents, general managers, and head athletic trainers of all NFL clubs. The second was sent to Stacy Robinson, the NFLPA executive who oversees the Steroid Policy on behalf of the union. The letter to Robinson states that “Balanced Health Products, which distributes Star Caps, has been added to the list of prohibited dietary supplement companies. Please distribute this information to the agents and players through your normal channels.” In response, Robinson had Balanced Health Products added to the list of banned companies that is maintained on the NFLPA’s website.

The suspensions were nothing short of
Complete and utter bullshit.
Here’s to the NFL continuing to hold potentially life-threatening information from their players. Maybe next time we’ll get another Korey Stringer incident and the player’s family can sue the league into bankruptcy.
Although, if Roger Goodell is going to be in charge for any length of time, the league going bankrupt might actually be a decent alternative to what we’re going to be getting.

If It Was Fair...
More than just six players would be suspended. Do you really think that only these six players were using the product?

Nice season guys.
Because we aren’t making the playoffs without those two for the stretch run. Thanks NFL! The Williams Squared should just sit in their cars and do blow during their suspensions, because that obviously carries no ramifications from the league. Or if it does, apparently getting caught red-handed doing an ILLEGAL DRUG takes longer for the NFL to deliberate over than a WATER PILL produced by a now-defunct company that didn’t list the masking agent in its ingredients.
Sigh. The life of a Minnesota sports fan—just as your teams get your hopes the highest, they find new and creative ways to crush your spirits. Just when it looked like we were shaping up into a great team…arrgh.

hahahaha
I came over to read what had been posted so far about 25 minutes ago, but then I had to get back to some work. I was coming back to post, “Don’t worry.. it wont be long until fans of other teams come over here to tell us all that we are wrong and the NFL rules are completely fair” but I was beat by two people already.
I really can’t comprehend how this is completely and totally in the lines of fairness having read extensively on the case. But as Big Blue and all the Pack and Bears fans will say, “The NFL has a policy. Blah, Blah, Blah.” Nice to know that policy holds up for water pills but not actual drugs. Next thing you know Niacin and Super B pills are going to be banned…. wouldn’t be surprised if they already are!! But players will continue to do coke and shoot people outside of a restaurant they own and nothing bad will happen.
Makes sense to me.
Here’s to hoping Fred Evans and Ellis Wyms can hold down the ship……… HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

Looking at the schedule
I like the Vikings chance in Detroit and against the Giants as they’ll probably bench starters for 3 quarters. So they should go 2-2.
How is the tie-breaker going to work if the Bears go 3-1 (which is pretty likely)?

I hope you guys are right...
…but I’m not exactly holding my breath. This affects Jared Allen more than anyone, because as serviceable as our backups are, Ellis Wyms isn’t going to strike fear in the hearts of any O-linemen.
I hope we can just pound the Lions like we’re supposed to—worrying about this at 8-5 sounds much better than worrying about it at 7-6.

So a colts fan comes on here
Telling us how the rules are ok and the suspensions are fine while a player on his team FIRES A FUCKING HAND GUN outside his restaurant, “hides” it in a soapy bucket in the carwash he owns, and nothing happens? THIS IS FUCKING BULLSHIT GOODELL IS A FUCKING JOKE!!! ARRRGHHHHHHHHHHHH!

That's different.
He committed an actual crime. That’s fine with the NFL as long as there isn’t a PR hit.

Marvin was never charged
and the soap bucket detail was one of many that have changed over time in the various news stories. Their fight in Marvin’s bar was two weeks before the shooting, which was outside Marvin’s repair shop where the gun was found.
The “victim” was a convicted murderer who is now facing charges for filing a false police report from the incident. He said he was shot while driving down the street, then said Marvin shot him, now in his lawsuit says both that Marvin shot him and that Marvin is responsible for someone else shooting him with Marvins gun.
Honestly there are probably two people who know what happened one isn’t talking and one is changing his story at every opportunity.

A Saints fan feeling your pain
I agree with you guys. This is total bullshit. It doesn’t really matter for the Saints because our season is pretty much over after Sunday, but it does matter for you guys. There’s still an outside chance:
Sources close to both sides told FOXSports.com’s Jay Glazer over the weekend that if the players’ suspensions were upheld, they would look to file an immediate temporary restraining order in a favorable jurisdiction such as New Orleans. They would then try to get a temporary stay, followed by a permanent stay to prevent the players from being suspended. Their argument stemmed from testimony that two high-ranking league officials knew about the illegal ingredient in StarCaps, yet never warned the players, the players association, nor the FDA.
It remains to be seen whether this route will be effective. Officials from all three teams involved anonymously complained that the league needs to reform its “strict liability” approach to supplement policy. These latest suspensions will surely cause more controversy.
The saddest thing for me is that I’ve probably watched my all time favorite Saint, Deuce McAllister, suit up in black and gold for the last time. I expect he’ll be traded after this season. Well, for what it’s worth, good luck guys. After this and because my Saints won’t be reaching the playoffs this year, I think I’ll start rooting for the Vikes. I really like “All Day” AP and wish the Saints could find a guy like him next year. Wanna trade AP for Reggie Bush? Yeah, I didn’t think so.
Go Saints!!!!

Thanks
Of course this also happened to one of the only teams that probably has more to bitch about than the Vikings, your New Orleans Saints. Deuce has always been a favorite of mine. It won’t feel right seeing him in another jersey next year.

It's always something with the Vikings isn't it?
It’s almost comical. With that said, there is something seriously wrong with the direction the NFL is heading. Cases like Matt Jones doing coke in his car, Johnny Jolly transporting enough drugs to kill a herd of elephants and these guys are still playing. But take a water pill that mislabeld and you’re suspended.
We have to find a way to deal though. If we are indeed a good team, we have to find a way to make up for the ‘wall’ being out and still win our games.
VikeGuru is a doofus!!
by Unclebillybonz on Dec 2, 2008 5:49 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Not the end of the world
They will be extremely missed but this isn’t the end of the world. The Vikings have great linebackers that can help pick up the run stopping slack of missing the wall. We definitely won’t be as good but like others have said we should be good enough to go at least 2-2 and that still should be enough to win the division. We have the upper hand in most of our tiebreakers with the Bears and I doubt they go 4-4 and if they lose to Green Bay while we beat the Lions we’ll have the division tiebreaker over them. Go Pack!!! that just felt wrong.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

OK, the problem here is the NFL policy is very vague especially in notifying the players. According to kevin seifert from ESPN nfc north blog:
(The big revelation is that the league notified the NFL Players Association that “Balanced Health Products,” which manufactures the StarCaps weight loss supplement that both Williamses used, had been added to a list of banned supplement companies. Beyond that, according to the release, the league’s steroids policy "does not set forth an obligation to issue specific warnings about specific products)
Whats mind boggling is the last freakin thing. . there are many companies that manufacture supplements that might be considered banned in on league but not in the other. . The least the NFL can do is be specific about the products that are banned. this is their job!

Not Over Yet...
I’ve been channel surfing all afternoon looking for details on the Williams Two as this was the day of the decision on their suspensions. ESPN broke it on their 6 p.m. telecast…HOWEVER, they also said that one of the Williams’s was going to court tomorrow morning to seek an injunction on the decision that would allow all six to continue playing for the rest of the season. With what is known on the details of the case, this could very well happen. Meanwhile, Goodell and company are happy to see professional thug Adam “Pacman” Jones get his 1000th chance and suit up for the Cowboys on Sunday….sources are speculating that they’ll also be waiting with open arms to welcome back Michael Vick as soon as he’s released from prison….

So, when you heard this, did anyone else think it was Goodell not wanting Detroit to finish winless?
