Around SBN: Chan Sung Jung Wins Thriller Over Dustin Poirier

Dear Playoffs,

It sure was nice of you to come so close, but I understand that you couldn't make it. As a life-long Vikings fan, I know that you're only there to tempt us. Unfortunately, I forgot about that for awhile and foolishly hoped that you would be joining us in a few weeks. I know realize the folly of that thinking. We Vikings fans appreciate how you made it much closer to visiting than previous years.

Was this all one big trick to get us to root for our arch-nemesis Packers? If so, bravo, sir, bra-vo.

Regardless of your intentions, you have once again built up my hopes for a post season, only to dash them away again and again. You'd think we'd learn by now, but you know what? We just can't help be secretly optomistic, despite our gruff, glass-half-empty exterior.

It sure was nice to have you close by. Maybe we'll see you next year.

But probably not.

Sincerely,

Degected, Pessimistic, Hope-Crushed-Under-A-Bus, We've-Been-Minnesota-Fans-Long-Enough-To-Know-Where-This-Is-Going,

Fans of the Minnesota Vikings

Dear Playoffs,

Wow! After so long, I can’t believe we’re actually together again!!! I’m so excited for this new beginning and opportunity for us. I’ve changed, now, so this time will be different.

I just know we’ll be together for many years to come.

I can’t wait for the future, especially our honeymoon in Tampa this February.

Love,
The Vikings

New Vikings Fan?

Only a new Vikings fan could have that kind of optomism.

I’ve been around too long to know how this is going to end.

A new vikings fan???

You don’t have to be new fan to have faith in your team. Why be a fan if you’re gonna lable us off to lose? We’re not the 98’ vikes, or th 02’ vikes or even last years vikes, We’re a different team!!! (Clearly noted with our re-vamped D this year and our new STUD at QB!) I think its not him being optomistic, I think its you being pessimistic! We beat the falcons ass up and down that field! We’re too good to not go to the playoffs, and I wish everyone would stop thinking that the G-MEN ARE GONNA PLAY US HARD!!! They’ve already said Jacobs isn’t coming! Why do they have to win anything??? NOT ONLY are we gonna win an easy and fun game, but I’ll bet the texans at home beat the Bears! AND that’s how the cookie crumbles!

Nope

I’ve only been a Vikes fan for about 30 years. I don’t remember every let down, but I cringe with the rest of you.

I just rather choose to believe.

GO VIKES!!!!!!

I find I'm closer in thinking to this post.

The Vikings will win. Just you wait and see.

I really, really, really, really,

really, really, really…(etc.) hope you’re right. I’ve just been around here long enough to know exactly how the Vikings usually do in these situations. The bounces never seem to go the Vikings’ way (see: fumbles, seven).

Dear Playoffs,

We owe you an apology for dragging this out to the very last snap of the regular season. It isn’t fair to either of us. In the end if doesn’t work out, know in your heart that it was not you, but us.
In the beginning of the season we had the best intentions; we did everything we could to be with you. Recently we believed fate would have us as one. We really and truly did want it to work out, maybe we just aren’t meant to be together. That doesn’t change the way we feel about you and never will. We just want you to be happy and exciting and fun to watch. Enjoy the weather!

Eternally,
Vikings

Ps. Sorry for mind-fucking you year in and year out like some juvenile assholes. It is not how we intended things to be. We hope you can forgive us, again.

Dear Playoffs

The Vikings do not deserve a spot in the playoffs if the team cannot win it with play on the field. Backing in with a Green Bay win in Chicago would have been cheap and would not have told the fans whether or not this team had any character. Sunday will be the test of this team’s character and its future next year.

That is why I don't mind that the Bears won.

Let’s earn it by manhandling the Giants.

I agree

I agree, the best way to get into the playoffs would be by beating the first-seed Giants and their starters.

Saying that, I will take whatever way available to get into the playoffs. If we do it by going 0-2 and the Bears going 1-1, so be it. I’ll still be happy knowing the Vikings got to play at least one more week with the Bears and Packers watching from their homes.

The Vikings haven’t seen playoff territory in far too long; weak divison or not, I want to get in. I just honestly have that horrible sinking feeling in my gut about this season after last night.

The Big Fat Lady in the Horned Helmet

Hasn’t Sung Yet!

WOW! I’ve been there for the ups and downs too, year after year, eaten the bitter disbelief as the Vikes have incredibly managed to snatch defeat from the gaping jaws of victory, time after time time… But so the hell what! Doesn’t matter. Holy crap guys, get the hell off the cross until someone shows up with the nails!

The season isn’t over yet, the Vikes STILL are in command of their own destiny, and they STILL have a great chance of winning the division and then some. Maybe a lot some!

Sure, we’ve been here before, but this is a new year, a new chance for glory (or pain)! Like Conan once said, ‘That which doesn’t kill us, only makes us stronger!", and truer words were never spoken of the long-suffering of Viking fans. If you ain’t tough enough to handle it yet… never you worry, the Vikes will toughen you up before too much longer. Soon you’ll be able to THRIVE in the pain, revel in the agony, and spit in their eye and dare them to bring on more!

Like me :)

This next game is critical, it’s against the toughest opponent in the NFL, while the Bears go up against one of the weak sisters, but the Vikes have a few things going for them which you may have overlooked;

1) The Vikings are the BETTER team, when they can hold onto the ball.
   - Stop turning over the football and they will win

2) The Giants will be very protective of their top players
   - Nail Eli Manning to the ground 2 or 3 times in the first quarter and he’ll be pulled

3) The Vikings are HUNGRIER
   - Never underestimate the power of need!

4) The Vikings lost this past week!
   - If you don’t understand how important that is, you haven’t been a Vikings fan for very long.

We’re gonna win this one, and when we do, don’t count them out til that big fat chick starts wailing.

And if we don’t… tell them that the teeth-gritting rictus of pain is really a happy grin because you can take it; you’re a VIKING FAN! :)

No matter how you get in

whether it’s a win or a competitive loss + Bears loss, this game bears a lot of similarities to the ‘07 NYG/PATS game. Even if you end up backing into the playoffs it could revitalize you to have a close game. I’m not saying the Vikes will def. lose. I remember Eli throwing like 7 TD passes last year… to Vikings DBs. You’ve had our number since Kerry Collins left town. Good luck in the game, and be glad you don’t play the 5 seed if you’re in.

You play to win the game!

I don’t understand why some people get so angry or offended by pessimism when it comes to our favorite football team. Is this some sort of ridiculous superstitious crap? It’s not like pessimistic fans aren’t still going to cheer their butts off when game time rolls around. Pessimism is a coping mechanism, and many, many, many people use it to make the pain hurt a little less.

V-I-K-I-N-G-S! Skol Vikings, Let's Go!!

Pessimism

Its annoying and frustrating because the majority of the pessimistic fans around here, and other Vikings areas, start freaking out at every little bad event, or mistakes, or what have you, and proclaim all is lost right off the bat. When there are still two chances for the Vikings to get into the playoffs, and some yutz comes in proclaiming them dead and saying the season is over after the loss to the Falcons, I tend to get extrememly irritated. Especially when there were a ton of positives to come out of that game, and the second half in general.

by cheaptoy on Dec 24, 2008 9:40 AM CST up reply actions

Three silver linings from last night:
  1. We still have TWO chances to make the playoffs. We have the ability to beat anyone in the league, even if the defending champs go all out on Sunday. And if the Giants beat us, I will have absolutely no problem backing into the playoffs with a Texans win. Remember, Mike Brown is out, the Bears are very capable of giving up huge passing plays, and that Andre Johnson fellow is pretty decent…
  2. I hate the Packers more than ever. It feels good. Like Anakin Skywalker “LET THE HATE FLOW THROUGH YOU!” good. Much better than rooting for them last night. As Maggie (Danny’s Wet-blanket Girlfriend) from Caddyshack says, “WELL TANKS FER NUTTIN!”
  3. Aaron Rodgers’ pedestrian stats last night ensured that I won $610 from my two fantasy football championships. So I got that goin’ for me, which is nice.

That’s even better than the $100 I won for Kansas winning. I didn’t play FF this year maybe next year.

And I just hate the Bears even more because now everyone’s saying, “THE BEARS STILL HAVE A CHANCE! THE BEARS ARE SO GOOD! THE BEARS SHOULD MAKE THE PLAYOFFS!!!” Screw the bears.

by FarvaForTheVikings on Dec 23, 2008 12:04 PM CST up reply actions

lol They really aren’t that good. Their offense came from their special teams pretty much. I think they had a single drive down the field from their own 30 that lead to points… maybe.

Anyone in their right mind

Who thinks the Bears are a good football team needs to wake up.

by Jepp The Viking on Dec 23, 2008 3:40 PM CST reply actions

why a fan?

the vikings as an organization most reliably provide disappointment since 1970. the joy that i’ve gotten from watching them over the years has come from the voicing the acid skepticism that they justly deserve from many of their long-time followers.

no, the bears are not a good football team this year – that’s why the vikings SPLIT the series with them. but they have something that all vikings fans want which is a tradition and a blind fanatacism that every now and then pays off. this has not, and probably will not, happen(ed) for the vikings franchise.

the vikings were only vikings under bud grant, in metropolitan stadium, when they had an identity. true, that didn’t yield a superbowl win. past the dome and the pretty sad run of coaches it’s all been crap. and for those of you who will talk about ‘98, just remember that wasn’t the team denny green started the year with…it just sort of happened to him, and to the rest of the NFL. about the closest thing to identity for the vikings past bud grant was jerry burns, who let a couple NFC championships get away.

ziggy, get a tough SOB who will declare (like coughlin in NY) WHO we are, WHAT we do, and by-God, then DO IT! guaranteed Super Bowl? no. something to believe in, hopefully. more fun than brad childress for the fans? would have to be.

by skyfiber on Dec 23, 2008 4:17 PM CST reply actions

Fuck off sky

The Vikes dont need anything to have an Identity, they are that.
We have a great Defense, drop Sharper and Sapp add 2 players that are hungry and we got something. Our Offense does alright with only the biggest household name since Moss, needs some improvement but hey cant have everything.
I think Coach Childress might have something here, and what the Hell whats another year.Lets see how this year pans out and how next year ends before we fire Coach Childress.

by speedlod on Dec 24, 2008 2:29 AM CST up reply actions

Agreed

Firing Childress this year would be insane and subject us to two to three more years of not making the playoffs. Even worse, that would waste the time we’ve had with AP, because who the hell wants to play for a coaching carousel? Plus, based on what I’ve seen this year, and combined with the past couple of years, I think Ole Chilly has improved with his coaching. He still makes some odd decisions, and can tend to get conservative, but the playcalling has opened up here in the second half of the season. The players appear to be coming out and playing hard for him this year (and even looked like they were in the beginning of the season when things weren’t going so good.)

He might seem a bit like an arrogant ass, but at least he’s not Romeo Crennel or Norv Turner.

by cheaptoy on Dec 24, 2008 9:47 AM CST up reply actions

get lost sky

If you are so fond of the bears organization and their tradition move to Chicago. What purpose do you have in your post other than to bring blind pessimism to the pages of fans who want to discuss their favorite team regardless of your ideas on their past tradition. We all know what the past has brought to OUR favorite football team, but your pipe dreams of Bud Grant coming back to replace chilly doesn’t contribute to the conversation most of us (I assume) wish to have.

This is a game.. We like our team.. If you don’t like our team (which you obviously don’t seem too), Move the fuck along. Traveling this year to several out of town games, I have met some pretty awesome Vikings fans who probably wouldn’t want to hear your negative bullshit.

I am not saying that I am a huge Childress fan, but you can’t deny that he has gotten better throughout the season, the playcalling and game plans have improved immensely. If the playoffs don’t happen, well, I had fun watching, hoping, and discussing the play of OUR CURRENT TEAM anyway!

LIVE IN THE NOW!
