Frazier's future
Is anyone else a little scared about us losing this guy to some head coaching job for another team? Who exactly would we bring in to replace him if he does go? I don't really hear much about good defensive coordinators being released. I don't want to have to go through another Mike Tomlin experience where the guy leaves and absolutely excels as a head coach for another team. Granted Frazier probably won't be headed for a team like the Steelers, it may be the Jets or something, but I would really hate to see the guy go.

VERY afraid.
The Lions have already asked permission to interview him. I think Frazier has done a wonderful job this year, and more than anything we need CONTINUITY going into next season.

It is a testament to the fabulous job he’s done here over the past two season.
Tomlin’s immediate success is partly (a big part) due to the situation he is in. He has been able to concentrate on football 100%. Many of the jobs that are or should be available are with absolutely futile teams; Lions, Browns, Chiefs, Raiders and whoever coaches these teams likely won’t have that same luxury. The Jets and Seahawks jobs are probably the most attractive.
While wishing him the best of luck, let’s keep our fingers crossed that he isn’t signed away.
We have a potential suitor already on staff in Karl Dunbar. I think he could do a helluva job if Frazier is out, and I love the fire he brings on the sideline. Watch an episode of Inside The NFL and listen to the Dunbar soundbites…. they’re great!! Great energy.
V-I-K-I-N-G-S! Skol Vikings, Let's Go!!
I was thinking the same thing
I think Dunbar may get his shot if frazier leaves and from what I hear the players think very highly of him and he is not only a very good football coach but a great motivator… and yes, you gotta love that energy!

I have no fear.
Frazier has been pretty consistant in his coaching style. That is one of the problems. He definitely fits in with the Childress philosophy, careful methodical movements. I see the Frazier defense a mirror image of the Bevell offense. Frazier did come up with a good game plan against the Cardinals, but other than that, the Cover 2 has been pretty generic. Maybe you don’t want to go nuts with this style, but I see good slant offenses eating us up and we do not make any corrections. Any decent defensive coordinator that has experience with the Cover 2 can do as good of a job as Frazier. This is because we have great players who have come together as a team and are really shining. This, I do give Frazier props for accomplishing. In any case, the Vikes have become a team to fear, and the Eagles should be afraid….very afraid. Whaaahahaha. SKOL VIKES!!

I disagree Noble
Have you noticed that the Vikings never get torched by elite wide receivers? They’ve played against Steve Smith, Andre Johnson, Roddy White, Greg Jennings x2, Calvin Johnson x2, Reggie Wayne, Anquan Boldin, Larry Fitzgerald, etc. Occasionally these players made a play or two on the Vikings, but none of them have had monster games against the Vikings. And for a team that’s this good against the run, that’s very important. Frazier’s usage of Nickel coverage and blitz packages has been very inspired this year. He had a lot to figure out last season, but this season he’s definitely getting the most out of his talent.
You make a case TMW.
I still say that the coaching staff is not the reason we are where we are. We have extraordinary playmakers that have made extraordinary plays when it counted. The elite receivers have not had the huge success they have enjoyed in the past because the Vikings have been able to put pressure on the quarterbacks this year. Going into Sunday’s game, the Vikes were 4th in the league in sacks. I credit the turnaround to #69, not Frazier.

I definitely agree
On the offensive side of the ball. They’ve only just started to realize that screen passes to Chester Taylor were a fantastic idea 3 or 4 weeks ago. I can’t say enough about how great a job Rick Spielman has done with the team. And the reason why they’re not 12-4 or better is mostly due to offensive play calling.
not worried
I think it is our scheme and defensive talent more than anything that has been the key to our success on defense. Frazier didn’t bring the tampa 2 to us did he?
No Frazier did not.
Tony Dungy was the real guru of the Cover 2 when he was the DC for the Vikes. After a number of DC changes and one at head coach, we seem to have finally found a nice group of guys that that can actually perform in this defense. That is what I mean when I say that it is the ability of the players more than it is of the coach when it copmes to executing this defense. The bad news is that the same group of guys in today’s game are only together for a few years. Let’s make this our year.

Cover 2
That is like saying West Coast offense, it doesn’t mean anything. It doesn’t explain what the unit is trying to accomplish. Every team in the NFL plays Cover 2 at least part of the time, its base defense. Cover 2 allows teams to disguise all kind of coverage and blitz schemes. Different coaches have different philosophies and execute different schemes from this defense.
Having the talent at corner to man up on the outsides, linebackers that can run with TE’s and running backs, and safeties that can identify play action allows a coordinator a lot of flexibility in his approach or scheme. Coordinators excel when they are able to take whatever talent is available and scheme to their advantages.
Football really is a team game.
