Jared Allen Formally Traded to Minnesota

According to Pro Football Talk, the Vikings and Chiefs have formally worked out a deal for DE Jared Allen.  Per PFT, the Vikings will send the #17 (first round), #73 (third round), and #82 (third round) picks in the 2008 Draft to Kansas City in exchange for Allen, as well as sign Allen to a contract that will make him the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL.

More on this throughout the course of the day.

Sweet!

We paid a lot, but this guy Allen is a force. We now have a DL as good as it was in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Just as Moss changed the way teams played against us and impacted the entire offense, this does the same for our defense. Teams will be forced to keep their TE in, or FB in to block. Teams will not be able to plan for many deep drop back QB steps, or bombs against us. Teams will be forced to change their entire game plan. Our LB’s can now stay home and not have to blitz on every play to create pressure. The Cover 2 will work much more effectively with the front 4 generating this much pressure on their own. HUGE! WHAT A HAPPY DAY!

And on a related note, Aaron Rodgers has announced his retirement

I would now say that the Vikings have, on paper, one of the top 3 defensive lines in the NFL. Giants probably have a better one, and same goes for Dallas, but other than those two teams, I say we have the best.

For those who worry about giving up the two 3rd round picks. Don’t. We were probably going to trade one to move up and get Derrick Harvey anyway, so really we traded one 3rd round pick for Allen. If I had to put my money on Harvey or Allen having more sacks next year, I would take Allen 99 time out of 100. So, while nothing is a sure thing in the NFL, this is as close to a sure thing as we could get.

And don’t worry about the contract either. Look at the contracts that Chris Long and Vern Gholston will be getting after they get drafted. They are unproven in the NFL and will get a contract that will pay then 7-9 million a year without playing a single down! Would you rather spend your money on a rookie, or spend you money on someone more proven. Also, if you took the combined contracts from our 1st round pick and our two 3rds, it would have probably reached anywhere from 4-6 million a year, so the effective cost of Jared Allen is closer to 5-8 million a year.

It's not all bad

we did swap 6th round picks with the chiefs so now we have the 5th pick in the 6th round…that totally makes the trade worth it!

I just paid out for 3 tickets to go the draft party this Saturday with my sons. They better have free beer considering there will be no action coming from the Vikes

RE: Draft party

I’m sure they’ll introduce Jared Allen when we were supposed to get our #1 pick.

the message

I think this move sends a message to the fans and the rest of the league that the Vikings’ management believes this team can win now.

We are finally out of rebuilding mode! Hallelujah!

Ponied Up

I am glad to see that the Vikings are willing to pay for top talent. Our defense will be awesome this year. Now if only they could fix the offense – we got Bernard now – but we need a quarterback that can throw it to him.
