2008 NFL Draft Open Thread - Day 2
And because I can't tell time, we're already about half a dozen picks into Round 3 of the 2008 Draft.
Discuss anything about it here, folks. . .we're at the #70 overall pick, and Minnesota currently doesn't have a pick until #150.

I'll be honest. . .
I don’t know a heck of a lot about him. Can you fill us in a bit?
And LaVelle Hawkins just went off the board to Tennessee. Nice pick for them.

Since UVa is about 100 miles down the road I follow them alot.
Since the time of Heath Miller (Pittsburgh) Virginia have been noted for their TE’s.
Virginia CANNOT seem to recruit WR’s. That, plus questionable QB play. Virginia’s pass offense is TE based. Santi can block and get downfield as a receiver. Can’t find stats, but good on goal line, and a late round pick would seem to make sense.

I could live with that. . .
Just looking up some stuff on him. . .looks like he has decent size and everything else. Seems like he might be a good late round guy or a potential UDFA after the action is over here.

Won’t say he’s Heath Miller, and UVa have 3 good TE’s which rotate, yet Santi’s 92-95% of Heath Miller.

How Intriguing is it that, 10 Days ago, John David Booty Told Trey Wingo that he wanted to be Drafted by the Vikings and 10 Days later he was drafted by None other than The Vikings
BTW, The Vikings should Take Carl Nix from Nebraska next an in the 6th round get a WR and Domonique Barber CB from the Gophers

Jared Allen
I can’t believe this, but did Coach Childress just say that they put absolutely nothing in the contract that protected the Vikings if Jared Allen reverted to past behavior. I can’t believe it! Millions of dollars, to say nothing about disappointed fans depend on his being a model citizen and player for the Vikings. I’m a Democrat but I firmly believe in Ronald Reagan’s admonition. Trust but verify!!

There’s nothing in there specifically, but there’s league imposed protection clauses for situations like this. I put them in the fan post.

Think they will draft a OT @ 152 or go a different direction, perhaps the reason they aren
t drafting a OT is they feel confident in Bryant not getting into trouble?

Jared Allen
I don’t want to come down at all on Jared Allen. I love him! But I have read that he still goes to the fun bars. He still has a good time. He just doesn’t drink. Do you think that he might fail once? I think that he might. I, first thought that I might recommend to him that he might hire a full-time chauffer- just in case, but I thought that – Well. the Vikings have protected themselves just in case – no matter how remote. It appears, however, that they were so eager to get him that they threw common sense aside.

I'm pretty sure
That PFT a while back said something about that most of his “guaranteed” money was “guaranteed” against injury only. . .meaning that if he screws up again, his guaranteed money gets cut in half or something.
Granted, it’s not FULL protection, but it’s something.
Let me see if I can find the link.

If he does the Vikings out to have had enough business sense as to put certain clauses into the man’s contract to protect themselves from such an incident from occuring.

What do you know about him? I’m looking for a reason to like this guy. The NFL.com scouting report doesn’t have much good to say, since he bypassed his senior year, didn’t play much as a junior, and had a mediocre combine.

I like the Booty pick.
I see it as a pick to add diversity. We have went the small school, unpolished, high ceiling qurterback and we’ll see how it turns out. With Booty, we went the polished, pro style, large school route. I see this guy as an NFL game manager which is not a bad thing. Possibly like a Brad Johnson earlier in his career.
The other picks I don’t have a problem with but I’m not estatic about any of them.
I am slightly worried about the developing pattern of trading up a few spots to “get there guy”. It makes one wonder if they are a bit succeptible to smoke screens.
