The Thread Where We Discuss Gonzo's Projected Vikings Roster

Well, that was fun!

Over the course of. . .however long the entire process took. . .I've given my vision for what I think the Minnesota Vikings' roster will look like for the 2008 season.  Here, in case you missed it, is the entire group.

QB (3) - Tarvaris Jackson, Gus Frerotte, John David Booty
RB (3) - Adrian Peterson, Chester Taylor, Maurice Hicks
FB (2) - Thomas Tapeh, Jeff Dugan
WR (6) - Bernard Berrian, Sidney Rice, Bobby Wade, Aundrae Allison, Robert Ferguson, Jaymar Johnson
TE (3) - Visanthe Shiancoe, Jim Kleinsasser, Garrett Mills
OL (9) - Bryant McKinnie, Steve Hutchinson, Matt Birk, Anthony Herrera, Ryan Cook, Artis Hicks, John Sullivan, Chase Johnson, Drew Radovich
DL (9) - Jared Allen, Kevin Williams, Pat Williams, Ray Edwards, Ellis Wyms, Fred Evans, Brian Robison, Jayme Mitchell, Letroy Guion
LB (7) - Ben Leber, E.J. Henderson, Chad Greenway, Derrick Pope, Vinny Ciurciu, Heath Farwell, Erin Henderson
CB (4) - Antoine Winfield, Cedric Griffin, Charles Gordon, Marcus McCauley
S (4) - Darren Sharper, Madieu Williams, Tyrell Johnson, Michael Boulware
K (1) - Ryan Longwell
P (1) - Chris Kluwe
LS (1) - Cullen Loeffler

So. . .what about this roster would you change?  Are there guys that I left off that you think deserved to stay around?  Or guys that I'm keeping on the team that you think should be hitting the road?  Well, this is the thread for discussing those sort of things. . .hence the snappy thread title.

If you need reminders of who's currently in camp and what not so that you can make arguments for your particular point of view, here's all the roster projection articles that I put together.

Quarterbacks
Running Backs
Wide Recievers
Tight Ends
Offensive Line
Special Teams
Defensive Line
Linebackers
Defensive Backs

And that's all for that, folks. . .discuss away!  The roster could, potentially, be massaged a little bit if anyone makes a convincing enough case.  There are a few guys on that roster up top, in my opinion, who should be watching their backs as we go through Training Camp here.

Continue enjoying your Sunday, folks. . .I'm quite interested to see what you all have to say on this one.

The CB Position

I Disagree that they will cut Benny Sapp, They Signed him in the off-season, they wont want to waste the money, i see Someone like Vinny Ciruciu or Drew Radovich.

Visanthe Shiancoe

I am not convinced that he will be the #1 TE. I suspect that this season we will see a lot of the short passes that often go to TE will be going to to Taylor or Tapeh. If this is the case, they will need a blocking TE more than a receiving TE, which would put Kleinsasser or Dugan as the #1 guy. Also his performance last season, showed that he has trouble catching the ball.

Artis Hicks

I really don’t see Artis Hicks making the squad. I could see Marcus Johnson or Dan Mozes making it over Hicks. I would rather see a J Leman signing or a Rufus Alexander taking that final roster spot over Hicks. Leman is going to be a freakish linebacker someday IMO. Plus, I just don’t think you can have too many great special team players on your team and I think that Leman or Alexander would be that type of player right now.

The Guys I See Being In the Most Danger

In no particular order. . .

Jaymar Johnson/Robert Ferguson – I’ve read at some places, in particular from the folks at Purple Pride, that I have too many WRs on the roster. I think that these two are the guys that would be in the most danger of getting cut. Aundrae Allison has an outside chance of being on this list, but I really don’t think he’s going anywhere.

Vinny Ciurciu – If he doesn’t contribute as an actual LB, we’ve signed enough special teams type guys where he’s expendable.

Drew Radovich

Erin Henderson

Letroy Guion – But only if the Vikings think they can get him onto the practice squad. I have my doubts on that front.

Those are the guys that really need to be watching their backs, in my opinion.

Honestly...

I think you need another CB, maybe not because we keep hearing Johnson can play nickel…but i don’t see thwem running wtih 5 CBs.

JHerrera…at this point there is NO WAY Hicks doesn’t make this team, partly because of the McKinnie situation, partly because he can play any position.

Tight Ends

Garrett Mills and Dugan are both playing the FB/TE position that Childress loves..one or the other makes it. Honestly, the upside of Mills is going to doom Dugan..I like that call. However, the only way Shiancoe isn’t the starter is if someone tears it up…think it is time to find this team a real TE(if it isn’t Mills)

My $0.02

Add Benny Sapp to CB and subtract either Jaymar Johnson or Ferg. Vikes probably want 5 WR’s and 5 CB’s rather than 6 and 4. Wouldn’t shock me to see Mills or Dugan miss the team, though they look fairly safe. I like Booty over Bollinger, but no guarantees for a 5th round QB for sure. If Booty is lackluster he’ll be gone no problem.

Camp will sort out backup linebacker and D-line, where the Vikes have the most new-comers and wannabees. Wouldn’t be a shocker to see another RB by camp’s end if the guy is a special teams stud. Cirrcu is our special teams specialist now and his lackluster performance means we may go somewhere else for that this season.

Other than the CB/WR maybe being a player off (or maybe not), I agree in every way with your list. It sure is nice that the Vikings team is so solid that the ?’s are very minimal. The only questions surrounding this teams roster are for backup positions, really.

As for who starts and who doesn’t, CB and WR are the only positions worth debating. Berrian seems like the go-to guy, but Rice and Allison and young, athletic, and coming on strong for playing time. At CB, Winfield is the only real lock. Gordon, McCauley, and Griffin are all in the same boat as far as I’m concerned. I’d like to see Winfield cover slot receivers in nickel, though.
