Pre-Season Week 2 Open Thread: Minnesota Vikings at Baltimore Ravens
Minnesota Vikings at Baltimore Ravens, Aug 16, 2008 6:30 PM CDT
As it sits right now, we're about two hours away from kickoff of the Vikings' second pre-season football game, as they travel to Baltimore to take on the Ravens.
The starters are expected to play the entire first half this evening, and hopefully we'll see a continuing of the improvement of Tarvaris Jackson that he showed in last week's debut against Seattle. Adrian Peterson might even carry the football this evening for the Beloved Purple.
Looking at the other side, 2006 Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith draws the start for the Ravens tonight, and the Ravens will also be without Willis McGahee. I'm sure we'll see a lot of first-round pick Joe Flacco this evening, as well as an appearance by Kyle "If Throwing the Football From Your Knees Was a Real NFL Skill, I'd Be an MVP" Boller.
As has been pointed out in the FanPosts by Nefarien, the NFL Network re-broadcast of this game has been moved up to 9:30 PM Central time. It wasn't supposed to be done until tomorrow, but apparently the time has been changed. So, if you can pull yourself away from Michael Phelps' race for his 8th Olympic gold medal in Beijing. . .and I can't guarantee that I'm going to be able to. . .you can catch the Beloved Purple on the NFL Network.
Phelps is a native of Baltimore, by the way. . .so tonight's Vikings/Ravens game is only the second most important event taking place in Charm City tonight. The Ravens have even gotten the go-ahead to show Phelps' race on the big screens at M&T Bank Stadium after tonight's game, which would be sort of cool to see.
Kickoff in about two hours, folks. . .if anyone comes up with a solid online stream for the game, please feel free to post it in the comments section. Otherwise, we'll see you here for the game and/or the replay!

Can you give an injury update?
I am watching the Ravens feed for the game, and they aren’t saying anything about T-Jack. Anybody know how serious his injury is?

Nance
He has been on the practice squad the last two years. He played in a game against the rams 2 years ago and had 4 catches for 33 yards.

kicker
Is this Hauschka guy just training camp fodder, or is Longwell in trouble? These lousy Ravens announcers don’t say anything…

Pat W!!!!
Thanks, adammoney.
I hate pre-season, fearing they’re all going to get hurt. Now Pat Williams is on the ground. This sucks.

Who is this listhpy niwit doing the game calling?
He sounds like he should be covering a 2nd rate fashion show at the Mall of America.
May the wind be always at your back, and may your placekicker have icewater in his veins.

NFL Network rebroadcast
I know this has probably already been asked and posted, but when is the NFL Network rebroadcast of this game? Oh, and any update on Pat yet?

Jackson injury, bottom-of-the-barrel receivers
We don’t get Vikings preseason games here in Virginia, so I haven’t had the pleasure of watching the Purple live yet this year.
CNNSI.com is reporting that Jackson went out of the game with a knee injury; my heart sank. From what y’all are saying here, it seems that it’s not too serious, but that he was taken out just as a precaution. That is a gigantic relief.
Martin Nance? Ha. We’ve seen a lot of Billy McMullen in Redskins preseason games here. The announcer said that he’s the league-leading receiver through the preseason (but of course, the Redskins are now finishing their THIRD preseason game instead of their second—the one perk of playing in the Hall of Fame game), which means nothing. Martin Nance, good luck to ya, buddy.
Would y’all have ever imagined that Vikings’ castoff receivers would be getting playing time with other teams?

As far as Nance
I, personally, have been pimping the guy for as long as I’ve been running this site. The kid’s got some talent, and with the way our receiving corps(e) has been for the last couple of seasons, it boggles my mind that the guy hasn’t gotten at least a look.

Well, they have managed to sneak him onto the practice squad two years in a row. Whose spot would he take? Berrian, Rice and Wade have the first three spots locked-up. Ferguson, Alison, and Johnson are all battling for the fourth, fifth, and maybe (maybe!), sixth spots. Nance is pretty lanky, and has some air, but where does he fit on the roster? Can he return kicks? Can he pancake-block safeties?

Booty
Wow, booty has a great start again
by adammoney on Aug 16, 2008 8:55 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I’m assuming that’s sarcasm since it was an INT. I don’t think anyone’s going to be saying Booty will be our starter half way through the season at this point.
In unrelated news, Aaron Rodgers is 5/10 for about 20 yards so far, and has been sacked THREE TIMES by the 49er’s defense in a little more than a quarter of play. Looks like he’s as mobile as Packers fans have said and their O-Line is fantastic.

But remember. . .
It’s the Vikings that are “a quarterback away” from contending. . .not the Packers.
I hope the Packers keep telling themselves that. . .I hope the media keeps telling them that, too.

If that GB O-line keeps up...
It won’t matter how good he is, he won’t have time to throw the ball regardless.

Packers Pass Block
Rodgers was sacked again. I cant wait till 69 hits him in the spine in a few weeks.
by adammoney on Aug 16, 2008 9:21 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I’ve been impressed with Jared Allen so far. He’s gotten good pressure. He missed that potential sack when Smith gashed us for some big yards but made up for it on the next play. Rodgers won’t really stand a chance when Allen makes it past the line.
I don’t like how easily teams are rushing against us though, zone defense or not. Something’s going wrong.

to Virginia Viking
In case it matters in the future (and not sure where you live), the Ravens games are on MASN – in Fairfax County, it’s channel 102.

QB situations
What do you mean? The Packers have one of the greatest QB’s ever to play coming off one of his best seasons in Bre… Oh yeah, forgot about that. I love that Thompson’s ego has the Packer’s dishing off a hall of fame QB coming off a 13-3 season in a passing offense to go with 3 rookie QB’s, none of whom look good in preseason. How on earth does a publicly owned team allow some egomaniac to absolutely run the team into the ground, while taking his side against Brett Favre after all that Brett has meant to the team?
Sucks to be a Packer fan right now. It is going to be a looooong season. If the Jets do well on top of it…wow. The Packers defense looks terrific, and might keep them in a lot of games, but you can’t do much with a pitiful line, over-rated RB, a bunch of solid WR’’s but no star, and 3 rookie QB’s.
