Ask BigBlueShoe, Colts blogger

Howdy you marauding, horn-helmed, man-eating flesh eaters from the the north. I'm BigBlueShoe, head writer for Stampede Blue (SB Nation's Colts blog). I just finished doing 5 questions with your main man here, and figured that if all of you had questions about the Colts leading up to the big game this weekend, I could use my vast and powerful intelligence (snicker) to answer them.

Please post your questions in the comments and I'll answer them as best I can.

As you can see, we Colts fans have had a bit of a roller coaster ride to start our season. We're not used to this kind of adversity in September. We're used to dominating in September. So, if I seem a bit disoriented to you, it isn't the whiskey I'm chugging like bottled water.

Ask away.

In your opinion, what has had a bigger effect on the Colts offense: Peyton Manning missing the pre-season, or the losses to the offensive line?

by Robert Rence on Sep 11, 2008 6:44 AM CDT   0 recs

Answer

Manning missing pre-season. The injury to Jeff Saturday did not help, but Peyton was not comfortable playing last weekend. He has also lost maybe 15-20 pounds. His stamina isn’t where it should be, and he does not look settled at all. And since he never played a pre-season game in Lucas Oil, it must have felt like a road game to him. I knew something was wrong when, before the game, Peyton didn’t do his usual prep routine with Marv, Reggie, and Addai. Peyton is a creature of habit (as Madden said), and when you see him not do his normal routines, you know something is wrong.

Follow-up:

Do you believe he will be settled into his rhythm by Sunday? Or will his surgery have a lasting effect into the season?

by Robert Rence on Sep 11, 2008 10:24 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Answer

I think he will eventually settle in. The surgery was not the issue. the timing of the surgery was. it should have been done in May, not late July.

The Defense

How huge is the loss of DT Ed Johnson and who replaces him? As a fan of a D with a decent pass defense, what do you feel they do well to keep teams from passing on them? Is it the pass rush or lots of talent in the secondary?

by vikingfuture8816 on Sep 11, 2008 11:53 AM CDT   0 recs

Answer

In Tampa 2, you must have a dynamic safety and a strong pass rush to stop the pass. If you don’t, you get killed. Tampa Bay in the 90s had John Lynch, Warren Sapp, and Simeon Rice. Indianapolis has Bob Sanders, Dwight Freeney, and Robert Mathis. So really, to answer your question, it’s both. Minnesota did a great job acquiring Jared Allen. Now, they need better safety play. When that happens, their pass rush will dramatically improve.

Receivers

Has Reggie Wayne eclipsed Marvin Harrison as #1 receiver or do you think as the season wears on that Marvin Harrison will regain his #1 status?

by keomr on Sep 12, 2008 5:21 AM CDT   0 recs

Good question

Don’t really know. Marv looks healthy, and I expect an 80 catch, 1100 yard, 10 TD season. if Reggie Wayne eclipses that, he’ll not only be the #1 receiver for Indy, I think he’d be the #1 receiver in the NFL.
