Coaching Situation

A lot has been said about Chilly's coaching ability and his talant anallysis.  one area that he did not seeming tell falsehoods on his resume was his ability to pick good D coordinators.  I firmly belive that the reigns must be handed over to a new coach at the end of the season.  sooner if we continue to lose as the result of a sputtering offense.  I first choice for his replacement is Leslie Frazier.  along with Chilly I would probably fire Bevell and Kevin Rogers, for failiing to utilise our offense and the failure to properly develop T-Jack.  I would probably promote either Mason or Pagac to be the new D-Coordinator.  and for my biggest surprise ... I woudl bring in Lane Kiffin to be our O-Coordinator.

He has experience calling plays.  with developing talanted, young QB's and with the West Coast Offense.  I think we would tak the job, because 2-3 yrs as a successful O-Coordinator will be the only way he gets another shot at HC after he is inevitably fired in Oakland.

My take

I think Chilly is really pretty good at evaluating talent and coaches, with relatively few exceptions (when compared to “average” NFL standards):
—Shiancoe. Was supposed to be the next Chester Taylor, but instead is the TE Troy Williamson.
—Bevell. He gets the nod here because he’s so closely linked with Chilly and the offense. Truth be told, I really don’t know what his contributions (and therefore failings) are, but he and Chilly take it together on this one.
And that’s really about it. Sure, you could say the Berrian is a bust, but it’s two games in and he’s had to deal with the worst play calling ever. Most people would put TJax and Kevin Rogers in here as well, but again I’m not sure that it’s prudent to evaluate them when the HC is calling a terrible game. I suppose Ryan Cook is an option on here—drafted too high for too little production, but then again the same could be said for McKinnie and his contract.

I guess the main point that I’d make is that our roster is really, really talented, and that the right HC could get an extended playoff run from these guys, even if TJax were still starting. Having said that, Frazier for HC, ASAP.

Coaches Certainly, but players?

it’s my understanding that chilly hand picked his coaching staff, and with Bevell as the only exception they all seem to be doing very well.

But how responsible is he for the players? Scott Studwell and Rick Speilman are largely responsible for finding and signing the talant that is here. At least that is the impression that I have. The player talant that Chilie had the greatest input in selecting where T-Jack and Ryan Cook, and Artis Hicks, none of whome has been all that spectacular yet.

So I would not go so far as to say he is a great evaluater of player talant. Coaching talant he can definetly spot ,except where his ego gets in the way (Derral Bevell I am looking at you)!

Ya, I can see your point. I guess I assumed that the Triangle of Authority really worked that way—that he had as much input as the other two in finding and getting players. But, your observations about TJax, Cook, Hicks, and McMullen can’t be overlooked either.

Just makes me more upset if we’ve actually got a good front office that drafts good players and instead have a coach who can’t call plays.
