Tired of hearing how great Titans D is
I'm really tired of hearing about how great Tennessee's D from all the talking heads out there (and some of the commentors on this site.) Yes they're good, but so are we. But let me set something straight: Tennessee, in no way, shape, or form is going to walk all over us this game, defensively or offensively. Because I'm most annoyed with the coverage their D is getting, and how they're going to shut down our running game, let's start there.
Titans rushing defense:
The rushing offenses the Titans have faced have totaled 848 yards this year. For us that number is 841 yards (essentially equal). The difference is that we've given up almost 20 yards less per game rushing than the Titans. What gives?
If we just look at rushing, they've played against the 13th, 24th, and 29th best rushing attacks. Of all those rankings, only Jacksonville's 13th best rushing attack stands out as noteworthy. That's also the closest game for Tennessee all year (a 17-10 win).
I think, at this point, it's safe to say that AD + Chester > Fred and MJD.
According to the stats:
Through 3 games, AD + Chester = 421 yds, 85 carries, 4.95 ave.
For the other two, Fred and MJD = 325 yds, 80 carries, 4.06 ave.
Thus, we are the best rushing attack they have seen yet, and don't be fooled into thinking that they have the second coming of Sam Adams and Tony Siragusa waiting for our boys.
Titans Pass defense:
Where Tennessee really excels is defending the pass (3rd in the NFL). So far this year they've only given up 454 yards through the air--all year. We've allowed 631 yards through the air (good for 20th.)
A little further analysis paints a slightly different picture, though.
If we look at the total passing yards of the three teams the Titans and the Vikings have faced this year, we discover that the Titans haven't played many--if any--good passing attacks, while the Vikes have already faced two:
- Titan's opponents total passing = 1254 yards.
- Viking's opponents total passing = 2004 yards
Those numbers tell us, again, that the Vikings have faced much better overall passing attacks this year than the Titans have. So how did each team fair against the quality of passing they faced?
- The Vikings allowed 680 of those 2004 cumulative passing yards, or 33.9% of the total.
- The Titans, interestingly, allowed 537 of their opponents' 1254 passing yards, or 42.8% of the total. So when viewed this way, while the Vikings have allowed more yards through air, they've been more effective at limiting the pass against better competition.
In the final analysis, Tennessee has a very solid defense, one which will, believe it or not, receive its greatest challenge of the season this Sunday. But to say that the Titan's D is outstanding is to jump the gun prematurely. So far the only thing they've proven is that they have done what they should have done against inferior competition. How they would fare against a Green Bay or an Indy is anyone's guess.
So far the numbers have shown that we've done an even better job defensively against much better competition than Tennessee, so don't be swayed by the hype. Our defense is for real, and the Titans have more to worry about offensively this Sunday than we do.

You Should
Post this over at the Music City Miracle (SB Nation’s Titans page). They seem to think the Titans bake cinnamon rolls with every dookie they lay.

Thanks
Tried to say something similar the other day but ended up doing a half assed job and copied the wrong link to the site.

Moronic ramblings
I’d like to see the people over at Music City Miracle come try and talk smack in this thread… they are quite classless over there! Anyway, this thread is great on detail, and might put things into perspective a bit for the “Gods” in Tennessee…. rolls eyes

looks like
They did… except they trimmed out a lot of the good analysis and just left in what they wanted.

Okay.
The analysis is flawed because it counts incomplete passes as > passes for a loss and/or completed passes on 3rd down that don’t get the first down. Most teams will happily give up short passes on 3rd-and-long to prevent the 1st down, and indeed, you will see this all day on Sunday from the Titans. If you need 7 yards, the Titans D will give you 5 all day to avoid the longer completion. I’m sure the Vikings do that, too. Most teams do.
My point is just that the above analysis doesn’t prove anything.
As for those who’ve noticed that we love our team the same as you love yours… I’m unclear how that’s surprising. At any rate, the statistics that I personally think are telling are Red Zone TD percentages and 3rd Down Conversions, neither of which favor the Vikes. It was for these reasons that the Titans lost games last year, and it was for these reasons that Norm Chow got fired. But the change in OC has done a lot to rectify last year’s problems, and indeed, that’s the biggest reason the Titans beat both the Jags and the Texans. If we win Sunday, it’ll be because the Titans succeeded in holding the Vikes out of the End Zone but managed to get there themselves.
And finally, on the strength of schedule argument: it’s a little early to talk about it. I mean, you lost to the Colts, and this is the worst Colts team in memory. Call me when you play the Texans and/or the Jags and then tell me about how much you think they suck.

Worst Colts team in memory?
No, I don’t think so. I thought what you were saying was all good until your last paragraph. But that brings up the main point I was trying to make:
I don’t think we really know how good (or bad) either the Vikings or Titan’s D is until we see some more games from them. 3 games is an awfully small sample size, and football doesn’t lend itself (yet) to a lot of statistical analysis that works in baseball.
Perhaps we can agree that this game on Sunday will tell us a lot about both teams.

Dude. This Colts team sucks. They are terrible. They are much, much worse than they have been in the last five years.
Seriously, go ask the guys at the Stampede Blue. Granted, those guys think that the Colts are gonna win it all every year—and this year is no exception—but I would think even they can tell you that this year’s team isn’t what it has been. R. Wayne is playing well, but M. Harrison is a shadow of his former self, and their rhythm and O-Line aren’t there yet. They may get there after the bye this week, but that is a usually-complete team that has survived to now on nothing but the brilliance of their QB.
But… I agree that this weekend’s game will tell us a lot about both teams. No argument there at all. This game could be the toughest game the Titans play all season because of the matchups.
Honestly, I’d be more confident if the Jags’ O-Line had been up to snuff in the opener, but what starters they had got hurt in the first QTR of their game with the Titans. With that, their running game sucked. And, I mean Garrard is good, but he looked like S. McNair back there in the ugly years. So much so, that I think he’s gaining a little cult-following amongst Titans fans right now. The consensus on MMM was that Garrard (and not Young) is the true heir to McNair.

Word.
I see what you’re saying about the Colts. If you don’t go as far back as Peyton’s rookie year or before as reference, then yes, this team is not nearly as strong as the previous number has been. Even so, maybe the AFC is just really good this year, because I think the team we saw could do some major damage against a lot of the NFC. HOF QBs will do that.
One other sidenote: wish T-Jax was Steve McNair’s true heir. Instead we’re stuck with Childress and his “I don’t pass for first downs KAO”…. it’s going to be a long season.

My comment
My “classless” comment was not in regard with how much you like and pump up your team… I am ALL FOR self-team promotion… it was in regard to the “homo” insults directed at fans just trying to make anlytical arguments. That is what was classless.
