yeah that sucked but I thought of a nickname for Jackson. How about Bootleg? His running was good.

Special Teams was embarassing
Also, is Tavaris not seeing the open man or can’t the wide outs ever get open?

1st half play calling was pretty bad.
it was like we were back in the Brad Johnson days. Call some plays and let Jackson go for cripes sake.

We have no quarter back, period. Another mediocre season while our team grows older. What a waste.

Might get crucified for this but
I am a diehard Vikings fan and hate the Packers with as much passion as the rest of the crowd here, but after watching that game, I can’t help but think that, in a vacuum, I’d rather have Rodgers as our quarterback than Jackson.
Assuming Rodgers and Jackson were both coming out of college with no history of Viking-Packer bad blood, who would you want to be leading your team?

i'll tell you what
our team would get a lot more attention if we did have him, did anyone notice how they showed like every expression on Robbers face?

Our Secondary Blew this Game
Gave up the Big Plays One too Many Fricken Times.
As for T Jack, Yeah he looked like shit for the first half, But in all honesty, Once Chilly opened up the playbook, He Looked pretty good other than that INT to Bigby

Watching the game:
The offensive play calling in the first half was atrocious.
While Jared Allen got plenty of pressure on his man, when Rogers keeps rolling right, there’s not much he can do about it.
I’ve not seen that much blatant pass interference since last year’s Green Bay game.
Where was the horse-collar call on the final drive?

Refs
I would like to congratulate you on a great job of letting the Green Bay defensive backs mollest, hang on, push off, hold, tackle early and do what ever they want to Viking receivers. Your bookie is very proud of the great effort not to call flagrant fouls!

QB?
How about we save much money by eliminating the quarterback position and snapping directly to Adrian? The offense is already one dimensional and it surely wouldn’t be a big surprise to our unsuspecting opponents. We could then spend the money saved on a secondary that could defend against your average high school passing game!
by ydavikes on Sep 8, 2008 10:11 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Our defensive scheme depends on getting a pass rush with the front 4
Allen or Edwards or Williams or anybody got that done tonight. It has nothing to do with the secondary (although Winfield did his best Fred Soot impersonation on the double move).
No pass rush with the front 4 equals burnt toast in the secondary plain and simple. Thats the way of the Tampa 2.

dissapointment
i don’t remember a more dissapointing opening day. why does brad want to keep tavaris on such a short leash? brad keeps bragging about the ability and decision making ability of tavaris but, in the end, doesn’t support those statements with action. i think the decision to stick with tavaris is an extension of childress’ enormous ego and unwillingness to admit he was wrong. don’t get me wrong, tavaris is a solid back-up q-back, but to say he is one of the 32 best in the world? i just don’t see it. i compare tavaris to senneca wallace out in seattle. i haven’t cared for childress since day one. never trust a guy with a mustache or a gold bracelet.

Would you Take jamarcus Russel over Jackson?
I certainly wouldn’t based on play alone, when you factor in paychecks then it’s even more a no brainer. Same with guys like Vince Young and even Derek Anderson in cleveland.
Tarvaris is a project no doubt but the skill set is there. IMO he’s being hamstrung by a coach who doesn’t try and take advantage of Jacksons skills.

Disappointed but still optimistic.
Poor play by special teams and defensive backfield and occasionally questionable playcalling (shotgun, 4 wide receiver set on 3rd and 1? can we at least pretend that we might run?). Tjack has gotten a lot of bashing, and he made his share of mistakes, but I thought he played decently. I’m still looking forward to the rest of the season, we still can have a great year if we learn from this game.
Oh, and the NFL could use some new refs too.

QB was Bad, but Play Calling a *JOKE*
Ok, Tarvaris Jackson was terrible tonight. He missed open receivers, and just plain made terrible, terrible passes.
However, that is the least of my concerns after this game. Here the Vikings are, sitting on the BEST running back tandem in the game, and in situations the likes of 2nd and 6 or third and 1, they are playing out of the shotgun! Are you kidding me You have the opportunity to get 9 defensive players to bite on a play-action pass, and you sit there in the shotgun and tip your hand? This happened countless times tonight. What about maybe throwing a ball out into the flats to give AP some room to do all the crazy things he can do? Isn’t this the same coach that was over in Philly with Brian Westbrook???? What is going on here?!
The play calling is a joke. The coaching staff has proved tonight that they are in way over their hands, and have no idea how to deal with the talent that they have.

Jackson, Gone
(to the bench). Childress, Gone (to the showers). I just hope it’s before the end of the season. Childress’s playcalling is terrible. Jackson is simply just not sharp enough to be a starting QB.

TJack
Lay off him, yeah that pick was shitty, but c’mon, he brought us back, he showed promise, and he had a tough break. I saw improvement compared to the bears game/Washington game last year. He can be our starter. Special teams sucked, and defense was not impressive. Period.

mismatch
If you have the Vikings personnel on defense and a first time starter at QB hangs 80+ percent on you, (on Monday night, against your archrival divisional foe) you are calling the wrong defenses.
If you have the best running tandem in the NFL and have to pass in the fourth quarter to get close enough to on-side kick so MAYBE you can win by passing MORE, you are running the wrong plays in the first three quarters.
If you are an NFL owner and you don’t know that, then you hire Brad Childress. He was picked, even though vanilla and untalented, to quiet down the scandal. And our prize left tackle is on a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s conduct policy (oxymoron?).
Coaching staff…GONE, and soon. AP is too good to waste in Minnesota…

Relax
Take a deep breath…. Exhale…
It is one game. There were serious rough spots and there is much to correct, BUT:
1. It was competitive throughout
2. Rodgers played brilliantly
3. There were three or four calls (or non-calls) that would have potentially changed the outcome
4. Losing a close game at Lambeau to the 13 & 3 Packers is hardly cause to fold for the season and quit.
Anyone who expected a cakewalk is at best a poor analyst.
I’d much rather start with a bitter taste in our mouths and have that lead to improvement and late season momentum, than start out cocky and then fall apart.
The Vikings have strong fundamentals. We will be in the playoffs. We will beat the Packers at the Metrodome.

... I don't know.
Is it me… Why do I find it strange that I have never seen Tavaris Jackson play a full 4 quarters of solid football.
It’s either he comes back late. Or he completes some passes when we’re down by 12. And he does just enough for people to say “Hey! He has some talent to be a good starter”
I was one of those people.
But I can only blame Tavaris as much as I blame childress coaching (WTF Is chester taylor doing returning kickoffs, and why is charles gordon returning punts?)
BTW… Is it me or does Benard Berrian seem slower than advertised? Maybe it was because he is coming off of injury but it seemed like when 32 year old Al Harris was not Tackling Berrian while the ball was in their air, he was in stride foot-for-foot with him.

PLenty of Blame to Go Around
TJ was running for his life, 1 great pass went through Mills’ arms, one bounced off Wade’s arm while the other was being held back, and the INT (I think) was Shank breaking off the route. However, there were some real crappy passes in there, TJ (missed 2pt conversion, missed slants).
Play calling was deplorable. Run up the middle. Run up the middle. Pass. There were a few plays in the second quarter that were good calls though unsuccessful – even the announcer mentioned how Chilly “finally” opened up the playbook – it shouldn’t take halftime to figure that out.
Defense: WTF???? Blitz 7 guys on every play if you have to, but put a 1st time starting QB ON HIS ASS. When the vaunted “best D-line in the NFL” is doing squat, bring the house. AR did have a sweet-ass throw on that TD, I’ll give him that much, but he also had a lot of time.
Punt/kick coverage was deplorable. Nothing more to add on that one.
Note to Darren Sharper: DIVE ON THE G-D FOOTBALL. You play DEFENSE. That means you don’t have HANDS.
What a tremendous let down. 15 games to go; I hope my heart can take it.

vikes suck again
I bleed purple, but I can’t stand watching t-jack (deer in the headlights look) come to the line of scrimmage and look like he doesn’t know what he is looking at? why? he has a very slow pass delivery, and it give time for the defence to react, once he starts to load his arm for the throw , it takes for ever… and oh by the way , give the ball to AP, and throw the ball to AP, and the vicanta shanko experiment needs to end, he sucks he has dropped more passes than he has caught, every time he does catch it he is a threat to fumble when hit. what the heck how does he even make this team… and when are we going to call some quick passes? slants work in the nfl for every other team, and screens? we used to run great screens, chilly does not call a good game, I do like chilly for the most past, its just very frustrating to watch this group play, we talk about talent, GB kicked our ass last night, blitzing was a joke also, no presure, all teams have to do is roll away from allen, and double team ray edwards on the corner, and no presure, how about a blitz from the left side? come on figure it out.

Hmm
Terrible play calling (who would have guessed).
Besides those runs, did Jackson really make any stand out plays? He shoulda woulda coulda have a TD on one of the FG drives (the CB getting a shoe string tackle on the WR, can’t remember who it was). but he never really showed that he could make any plays beyond the skill of running college QB.
Also we got hosed in the special teams battle. I don’t know what was wrong with Kluwe, but his punts kinda sucked at times (not enough height, especially that return for a TD).

Let's not forget
The Viking’s offense did outscore the Packer’s offense, even with the terrible first half.
A couple of breaks go the other way, and a couple of no calls get called, and everyone here would be sitting around talking about how good Jackson looked in the win.
The only thing worth being concerned about, if you ask me, is special teams. That was awful.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a Vikings discussion unless there were knee-jerkers writing them off after the first game.

what the hell
Seriously, I haven’t been this let down by the Vikings for awhile. All this talk prior to the game only to play like total retards. Some bright spots for sure but bright spots only last a second.
Play calling was just beyond words. I really think we would’ve done better playing Madden and having John read in the plays from the fucking game. I just can’t understand some of the decision made by whichever idiot was calling the plays.
As far as Jackson goes, I thought he was atleast a little more comfortable dealing with pressure however I was still cringing watching him make that same STUPID throw off his back foot, you all know what I am talking about too. Wasn’t he meant to fix that like uhhhh during the last 6 FUCKING MONTHS?
Special teams = JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously, this is just laughable, what the fuck went on here?
I really didn’t see us losing that game. I’m not ready to say we aren’t going to go somewhere in the NFC but i mean really, there some huge problems last night that need to be fixed ASAP!

Calm down everyone
Special teams was the difference here. The Vikings needed some kind of big play on defense or special teams and it didn’t happen. Really the line drive punt was what allowed Blackmon to make that return and turned out to be the difference. .
Childress really needs to start calling for more screens to AD and get him in the open field.
I thought Jackson did ok tonight. He really only made 2 bad throws.
by TMW on Sep 9, 2008 9:27 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
It was the coaching
Chilly really needs to reconsider the play calling. The Packers were able to predict every single play. They knew when we were passing, they knew when we were rushing. It’s not all about raw talent. You need to outsmart your opponent. The Vikings didn’t even attempt to outsmart the Packers, on both sides of the ball.
Also, I disagree with attempting blitz’s. An earlier comment said we needed to blitz more. We blitzed like crazy in the first half and look what happened. The blitz got picked up on every instance. We got Jared Allen so we could dedicate more personnel to coverage, yet we still blitzed like crazy. We stopped doing that in the second half, and look what happened. If we could have stopped that punt return, we could have won the game. We played a nearly perfect 3rd quarter considering the Vikings style of play, and that is what we need to do every quarter.
Mr. Wilf should be looking more at the coaching staff than the players on this one.
‘And the wild things roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws’.

Optimist's view?
A 5 pt road loss at Lambeau can’t exactly be unexpected. Frustrating, yes, but shocking, no.
I’m really hoping the lost time in preseason is the primary source of Jackson’s struggles, it seemed like he was a shade behind in many of his passes. His timing just isn’t there yet.
Mixed reviews on the defense. I mean, 8 offensive line penalties is a lot, so they must have been causing some havoc in the trenches. But 18/22 passing is unacceptable no matter how you look at it. Run D except for one play was ok (take out the 57yd run, and they’re 26 for 82)
The officiating was poor at best. I counted 2 blocks to the back on the punt return TD, not overturning the challenge was horrible, and there were 2 other 3rd downs where Vikings WRs were mugged with no call.
That’s what stood out to me, don’t think the Vikes can play much worse than that, and they still had an opportunity to win at the end.

No way the NFL wanted Vikes to win, they wanted the Pack to win, and made sure they had the right refs inplace to make horrible calls against the vikes, this way the chese heads who live in green and gold keep buying green and gold clothes, that is half of all clothing sales in wisconsin. serious have you ever driven in wisconsin and gotten out of your can, almost every person has something green and gold on, I went to church in wisconsin a few weeks ago , about half a dozen people thought putting on green and gold is dressing up for church

I am seriously going to flying knuckle fuck Childress if he keeps calling plays a 3rd grade volunteer football coach wouldn’t call. That being said, has anyone else thought that Chilly was using a closed play book because he knew T Jack, Rice, Berrian, and our o-line never truly played together in a game situation? Come on man, these are big boys who know what to do. Stop babying T Jack and pop the titty out of his mouth. He is a 3rd year player and should either make it without training wheels or start riding the short bus to games. a team on the other side
reading some posts reminds me that there WAS a team on the other side of the ball, a 13-3 one at that, albeit without their vet QB. OK, that’s fair. still, the Vikings NEVER looked like winning that game, or looked like they CAME to win it. had not the GB field goal attempt (low and lousy by a snapper/kicker tandem with no time together) been blocked, no Vikings play looked like a statement (aside from AP’s decking of Harris).
it’s not that this season is to be thrown out after one game. it’s that after tens of millions in guaranteed money THIS TEAM WILL LOOK EXACTLY THE SAME THIS YEAR AS LAST!! that is why i’ll have such a hard time tuning in for each game…it’s already been played. interestingly, the same is probably true of GB. their year will look the same too, and they have a DIFFERENT STARTING QB, where you’d expect the quality of play to suffer. yet, the Vikings have THE SAME QB this year…hmmmmm.
