Start your drafts!

Since the season is over, and most of those declaring for the draft have done so, it is time to get that first mock out there. While it is fun to try and guess where all of our favorite players are going to be taken. I don't know much about other teams and their needs and generally don't care that much either. I know the NFC Norse and its champion, The Minnesota Vikings! So I tend to just prognosticate solely on their future. That all said, let play that game everyone has an opionin on, Mock Draft.

Critical Assumptions -

1. Unless one of the top, and I mean "Plug this guy into your system and he will win you championships" top QBs falls all the way to the Vikings, they won't take a QB with a draft pick. At all. Period. They already have 2 guys on the roster as "developmental" and adding a 3rd QB with that tag is pointless, I don't care how much to hate T-Jack.

2. The Vikings have no 6th rounder (Kelly Holcolm) and an additional 7th rounder (from Washington for E. James). While on draft day, the Vikings will certainly move up and down the boards of the later rounds, I will not try to add a bunch of trades to this or any mock because as much of crap shoot a (mock) draft is, its made worse by trying to guess who trades with who for what on draft day. And when I see mock drafters doing it, it generally just shows how little research they did in making thier draft and greatly states any bias they have towards any organization or individual.

Finally, Draft Time:

1. Greg Hardy, DE Ole Miss. 6'4'' 265lbs - I know everyone is pumped about getting a QB or an OT with this pick (which I think comes more from hating Chilli and the two guys he drafted for those positions than anything else), but the Vikings are going to take the BPA on the board and I think Hardy will be that man at this point. He has been a force in the SEC and I think he would be great rotating in with Edwards right away and possibly taking the job from him. He ran a little hot and cold in college, but I don't think he will have any motivation problems playing on a line where he will have 1 on 1 match ups every snap and lots of competition for playing time. This pick would solidify the D-line and make it as feared as it was when the Purple People Eaters were crushing offenses. DE is not a deep position this year (much more 3-4 OLB guys than 4-3 guys) and Hardy should be the 2nd DE taken after Everett Brown from FSU.

2. Phil Loadholt, OT Oklahoma 6'8'' 337. ROT is the biggest need for the Vikings, but in a deep draft for OTs, one will find a good one in the 2nd round. Loadholt was a decent LOT in college, but could be a great ROT in the pros. He is a monster in the run game which will help the Purple Jesus (Praise the Lord!) and his struggles with speed guys in pass pro can be coached up and masked on the right side of the line. He definately won't be pushed into the QB like Cook and Hicks perfected this season. Worse come to worse, he could be moved to the left side for a while, but I wouldn't leave him there.

3. Domonique Johnson CB, Jackson St, 6'2'' 200. 4.4 40 Honestly, I don't know that much about the guy, but I like most of what I read about him. He's tough, physical, and a great tackler (albiet against lower competeition) so he would be an asset in the run game. He is also good at jamming guys at the line while have the athletic ability and speed to recover and get to the ball. Had 5 picks and double digit PBU each of the past 2 years and has the speed to help out in the return game.

4. Ramses Barden WR, Cal-Poly 6'6'' 227 4.6 40. While he might not be a deep threat with his timed speed, he would be a great asset in the red zone and as a possesion receiver for the Vikings. He set his schools record in receptions, yards, and TDs while averaging 20 yards a catch over his 4 years at school . Not too many corners or safetys can match his height, and he has the ability to get up to the ball in traffic and come down with it. Is known as a decent blocker as well and you know how important WR blocking as been to the Vikings running success.

5. Dan Gronkowski TE, Maryland 6'6'' 255. Everything I read about this kid is about what a great blocker he is. That was confirmed when I got to see his bowl game where he was out in front of quite a few long runs blocking downfield for the big gains. But I also noticed, that once he got to start his senior year, his passing numbers jumped up by alot compared to his first 3 years. I hope Kleinsasser is re-signed and even if he is, this kid would be a decent replacement and probably a better option in the passing game, especally as a big target in the red zone and on short yardage.

7A. Sammie Lee Hill DT, Stillman 6'4' 320. From a school I have never heard of, but scouts are starting to buzz about this guy. He even got an invite to the East/West Shrine game. Is about the same size as Phat Pat and would have a few years to develop behind him and Fred Evans before getting on the field.

7B. Jorvorskie Lane FB, Texas A&M 6'0 285 4.7 40. Yeah, you read that right. 285 LBS. The guy is an additional Olineman with a running head start. I think he will drop a lot of the wieght, but even then he is a big guy who just needs to be converted from RB to FB. I also think with his size, he would be a valuable assest on short yardage/goal line situations as a ball carrier. He would be like ol' Moe Williams. Everyone remembers Moe. If you needed 1 yard, he got you 3. If you needed 5 yards, he got you 3. Also, I don't think anyone will confuse him with a pass catcher, so no more 1 yard swing passes to the FB.

Thanks for making it this far, hope you enjoyed. I encourage everyone to give it a shot too, but don't start getting nick picking over who has who going where. Remember, it is still 101 days, 17 hours, and 39 minutes till Draft day and we all want what is best for the Vikings. Skol Vikings!

I like where your heads at....

I like the idea of bringing back the fear with the purple people eaters!! Although with the way the D played this year I would improve the O first.
OL and then WR but you are right, they’ll go with BPA which has worked out pretty well for us so far….

DT more pressing than DE

If the first round does go for defense, then I would prefer finding someone who will replace Pat Williams as he’s entering the last year of his contract. I like what you wrote about Sammie Lee, but I’d rather have a sure thing. Also, Robison is going to take Edwards’ job next season. I’m all for depth, but depth at DT has to be more pressing right now.

I just watch

Curtis Painter the guy have a really quick release strong arm. I think we should get hgim.

God No

What exactly did you “just watch” about Painter? Quick release or not, he makes horrible decisions and no, his arm isn’t that strong. He played very badly this year when everyone was expecting him to take off and be one of the better, if not best QB in the Big Ten (4-8 record, threw just as many picks as TDs). I understand people don’t like TJack, don’t like the idea of having another veteran running the offense, and wish some young stud will just fall into the Vikings lap and take them hand in hand, skipping into a decade long dynasty filled with Super Bowl rings, but that doesn’t mean you should be throwing rookie QBs names against a wall and hope they stick.

yes

I watch film of his and his release is very fast. The ball never drop below his chest. He can throw it from his shouldwer hieght. I watch five different game. tjack has bad mechanic. He carried the ball too low. Bad footwork. I never said don’t bring in a vet. I just think he is worth a really good look. I like him. I think he will be a very good NFL qb.

Nah

A quick release and strong arm may do wonders in college football but doesn’t necessarily translate into the NFL. TJack has a strong arm and we’ve been teased with his physical abilities. We need a smart QB and getting a similar QB to TJack isn’t the answer. Now, I’m not completely ready to ditch TJack, but learning from your “mistakes” is applicable here.

Tell that to Peyton Manning

This guy have the quickest realse in the NFL. He make his Oline look really good.

Yes he does!

Did you see how fast that fumble in the Atlanta game flew backwards? I don’t think any other NFL QB could have released the ball that quickly!

Useless

Well, appearently Hardy isn’t leaving now. So as quickly as I put it up, this mock is pointless. Still think the Vikings will take the BPA in the first, but it isn’t going to be him.

I think you're wrong about Javorski Lane

Brad Childress could confuse him with a pass-catcher, just as he has done with the other guy that is a waste of personnel FB, whathisfacehawaiianneme.

Using a FB just because you run what you think is a WCO is a perfect illustration of how Childress can not adapt at all. He has his philosophy and that’s that. (In all fairness, at the beginning of the season, he wasn’t quite the chickenshit he has been for most of the rest of his tenure, but unfortunately he has gotten over it).

Okay, I got my derogatory Childress vent out of the way, on to your draft. It ain’t bad, although I don’t know that much about most of those guys yet either. We’ll all know a little more after the combine, workouts, and endless reminders from Mike Mayock and Mel Kiper.

I think if we stay where we are, it will be an Olineman or a cornerback. We won’t draft a QB because, like you said, we’re up to our ears in developmental QBs. Now it’s up to one of them to develop.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t have a first round pick again this season. You know what I’m saying.

I do know what you're saying

I don’t know much about the guys either, but I love the draft and now is when all the scouting/practice/combine/workout info starts getting put together. The thoughts of potential and talent that could be coming the Vikings way is like Christmas when I was young enough to believe in Santa.

I don’t agree with you, however, on the Vikings not having a first round pick again this year. Don’t see too many, if any, teams that trade away their first round pick in consecutive years for player. I believe the Eagles traded out of the first round in the last 2 drafts, but they got some extra 2nd and 3rd rounders for them and not veteran players. Could see the Vikings trading down if that is what you were implying, but I don’t see them trading it for another veteran player like they did with JA last year.

Why not? Look how well it worked with Allen. I’d rather get that veteran that may come in and make an immediate impact over a rookie who may end up being a bust.

JA signed a

Six year contract, as part of the trade. And he is in the prime of his career. What Veteren QB will we get, in the prime of his career, and with a multi year contract for a 1 round pick? I believe that the only one that fits that bill is Cassell, and I wouldn’t touch him with a ten foot pole,

Cassel had a great year, but he has amazing weapons in NE. the best possible thing that could happen in NE is for them to Franchise him, and end up getting stuck paying him and brady 14 mil each next year. I garrenty that Belicheater doesn’t want Cassel as their starter next year.

And I do beleive that him foisting Cassel on us next year would be sweet sweet revenge for taking Mills from him 2 years ago. And in a perverse way, I kind of agree with him. that is why I don’t want Cassel on our team next year, Belicheater would pry to much form us, and he simply is not worth it. If Cassel starts some where next year, I see a big reduction towards the mean with him.

Hasslebeck, is old and no longer in his prime, and was badly injured last year, and there for not worth a 1 rounder.

Anderson did not perform last year, and there for not worth a 1 rounder.

Palmer was hurt badly last year, not the first time he has been hurt in Cincy, I would not give up any more then we got for ’Pepper for Palmer.

I might be tempted for Leinart, but a lack of a track record, makes me leary of a first.

so I believe that we will have our 1 pick this year. maybe not our 2 or 3, but we should have our 1.

Regardless of price...

Don’t you think any of those players you listed are at least more consistent than Tarvaris? Isn’t having at least some stability at the QB position worth a first rounder? After all, the Vikings are pretty much a QB, and maybe one or two other players away from a deep playoff run.

I’d say, in the context of this year, that it’s worth it.

Obviously, I think Hasselbeck is worth a second rounder only with his injuries and age. Anderson is also a second rounder, considering he was a backup, and I don’t think the Browns will ask a firsty for him. Same for Leinart, probably. But the Cards won’t trade him. Carson Palmer? Won’t be traded. The only viable ones on there are H-beck and Cassel, either of which I would love to have.

Would really like McNabb as well, but with how the Eagles are doing, unless there is huge contract disputes, don’t count on it.

I am pretty sure he's talking specifically about...

Price!

This league is about the dollar; and they cap them. You can’t argue for a transaction regardless of both the short and long term financial consequences.
