The St. Louis Rams are closing in on their next head coach, with the decision down to New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.
The Rams are trying to commence negotiations with one or both imminently, sources familiar with the talks told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen.
It has been extremely close between the two candidates. In fact, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Spagnuolo will get the job. But multiple sources have not been able to confirm that, according to Mortensen and ESPN's Ed Werder.
However, a source close to Spagnuolo believes the pendulum has swung his way. That source said there were already parameters in place for a four-year, $11.5 million deal for Spagnuolo.
Another Rams source could not confirm those details.
Garrett had been accompanied by his wife on his visit to St. Louis, but left at noon ET.
One high-ranking Rams source said the team might have a deal done any time this weekend, through Monday.
The strong feeling from inside the organization is that Rex Ryan will be the next Jets coach. Ryan had been the Rams' No. 1 candidate, sources told Mortensen.

Rams go with Spagnuolo
Steve Spagnuolo, who spent two seasons as the New York Giants’ defensive coordinator, has been hired by the St. Louis Rams to be their next coach.
No official announcement is expected until Monday at the earliest.
Spagnuolo, 49, agreed to a four-year deal worth about $12 million, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Prior to his Giants experience, Spagnuolo was a defensive assistant coach with the Philadelphia Eagles from 1999 to 2006.
ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen had reported earlier in the day that the Rams had narrowed their picks to either Spagnuolo or Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.
The strong feeling from inside the organization is that Rex Ryan will be the next Jets coach. Ryan had been the Rams’ No. 1 candidate, sources told Mortensen.

So is Frazier going to be staying? There aren’t any more jobs available are there? At least not any I have heard that he was being considered for.
I hate that for him but I didn’t really want us to start over at DC either. Maybe next year big guy, after you win the Super Bowl :).
I think the Jets still need a coach, but he's not a candidate.
So yes, he’s staying, and we’re going to have the same DC for 3 consecutive years for the first time in a decade.

YES!
Great news for the Vikes. I really thought we were headed for our 7th D-Coordinator in 8 years, but thankfully it looks like we’ll have the best coach on the staff back.

Humbled
Frazier is back in 09. He will have EJ, M.Williams, and Tyrell replacing gassed out Sharper for a full season to go with our extremely talented dline.
I say reward him by bringing in a ballhawking corner so that he may blitz his little heart out. QB’s are gonna hate to play the vikings next year.
Did i mention Frazier is motivated by being passed up for a HC gig?
If he’s interviewed for all of these head coaching jobs over the past 2 years, and continually gets passed up, do you wonder if there may be something there that makes teams think that this guy can’t be an NFL HC?? Perhaps he has philosophies on running a team that scare owners and GM’s away.
I appreciate Frazier as a DC, and think he’s working with the talent well, but I’m still not extremely impressed with his schemes. He relies too heavily on the cover 2 formation for my liking, and offenses all around the league seem to be slowly figuring that out. I did, however, think that he began doing a nice job of bringing lots of different blitz packages towards the end of the season, so I’m still optimistic.
As far as Frazier for coach in ‘10? I’m defintiely not sold. There will be a big number of VERY worthy candidates next year if Chilly gets the ol’ boot. I think Frazier gets so much praise in Minny partially because of how awesome he looks in comparison to the rest of this horrible staff.
V-I-K-I-N-G-S! Skol Vikings, Let's Go!!
I’m still holding on to the completely irrational hope that somehow, some day, we will have Tomlin back with the Vikes as a head coach.
