Regular Season MVP's. .

Ok, since the regular season is now in the books.. and everybody is looking forward to the play-offs who do you think was this season's MVP for the Vikings?

Personally, I'd go with Shiancoe.. even though Peterson has had a solid season this year he had to many miscues that really hurt us. .  but shiancoe on the other hand, has really stepped it up lately. . and has been playing surprisingly  excellent.. and the 136 yards and 2 T.D game cemented the MVP for him..

who would you guys choose?

Winfield got burnt a few times too. Did he play above his level or at his level? I think he played at his usual solid level but did not step it.

No, you pretty much have to go with Peterson here. Shiancoe’s stepped it up, yeah, but Peterson IS the offense. Without him, fumbles included, we wouldn’t have won several games.

Offense: AP, there is no one else.
Defense: Jared Allen, keeping the pressure on the bad QB’s in the division.

Antoine Winfield and AD

Yep

’Toine and AD, hands down.

My awards:

OMVP: AP
DMVP: Jared Allen. We bring him in and out pass rush goes from lackluster to amazing.
Breakout Player: Shank, although Ced’s progressed well too.
Comeback Player: Kinda wanna go with Kwill’s pass rush, or Tjack’s late season return.

In AP I trust

Agree

AD is the OMVP. Even if he has a bad game (Saints) other teams are constantly planning for him and he’s opening other options. Shiancoe has been better the last half of the season but he still killed us the first half of the season. Does anyone remember the easy TD he dropped in the Indy game which would have won it for us? Winfield is no doubt the DMVP. Interesting to watch Ced as of late. He was clearly still hurting from the flu last week but other than that he’s been much better than Antoine for the last 6 games or so and he totally destroyed Andre Johnson in the Houston game.

so i think we have an overall consensus that our MVP this season has been A.P?

Minnesota Vikings and Liverpool F.C the two greatest sport teams ever.

by vikingfromkuwait on Jan 2, 2009 3:55 PM CST reply actions

I don’t see the day when it is not AD unless he retires.

by Frost on Jan 2, 2009 10:54 PM CST up reply actions

I can, but not in a season where he plays the majority of the games…. or unless we get a lights out WR somewhere.

Peterson

I totally agree with Peterson on the offensive side. Minnesota fed him the ball and he produced yards. I would have liked to seen more TD’s, but the Vikings did shre the wealth. Which benefited our TE, Shiancoe could be a comeback player for the Vikings. Last season and the beginning of this year were so sad, (so many dropped balls in the endzone) I would not have thought twice if he was cut.
I’m undecided on defense. On one hand you have to love Jared Allen’s motor and playing through injury. To start the season it was obvious that it was Winfield. But opposing offenses just ignored his side of the field during the second half of the season which resulted in not many highlights, but a huge sign of respect from offensive coordinators.

by DBQViking on Jan 3, 2009 7:36 AM CST reply actions

They almost always ignore Winfield’s side. And when they do throw to the reciever he’s covering, it typically ends up as an incomplete because he deflects it, or the reciever catches it and is tackled immediately. The guy’s a pretty good corner, no doubt, but Allen definitely needs the MVP on the defensive side for improving the passing defense so much. Two years in a row, we didn’t have a team sack leader with more than 5 for the season I don’t think. Enter Allen, who finds himself with 14.5 (I think that’s how many he had, right?) and not only tears the QBs and O-line up, but also frees up Kevin Williams to improve his sack total from last year to 8.5 sacks.

Winfield won that New Orleans game for us, no doubt about it, and he’s definitely an impact player, but he didn’t have as much of an impact on the defense this year as Jared Allen did.

14.5

You can never argue with 14.5 sacks. The increased pressure on QB’s this season has JA’s thumbprint all over it.

by DBQViking on Jan 3, 2009 9:59 AM CST up reply actions

You can't say enough...

About the difference between covering for 4-5 seconds and 7-8 seconds. Teams haven’t been able to put double moves on our corners very often let alone have deep success on our safeties. Not only has Allen doubled the Vikings D-Line Sack total from a year ago himself (don’t actually know this), he allows his line mates less attention all while limiting the types of routes we see.

Be honest

The past couple years, anyone here could have gotten open on the Vikes!

by LoveHate on Jan 3, 2009 7:07 PM CST up reply actions

No, he didn’t double last year’s D-line sack total single handedly. I know for sure that RObison and Edwards were tied for first on the team with 5.5 a piece. He might have gotten more than the whole D-line got last year though. But 14.5 is a very respectable ammount.

Greenway

Unsung hero who stepped up and played at the next level. Once EJ Henderson got hurt Greenway took over to lead the LB corps. Leads the team in tackles with 20 more than #2 tackler Winfield. Beating Winfield by 20 tackles is huge. 5.5 sacks by a weak side linebacker. Phenomenal. Normally strong side is sent on blitz.. He also has been good dropping back in coverage. With the loss of EJ leading the middle, Greenway took over the D and they steadily improved. More than Allen or Kevin Williams I think Greenway filled the gaps and supported the entire D from pass rush, run stop, and pass coverage. Peterson did his usual crushing best but the fumbles are a knock against him. Same for Shiancoe with the drops. Greenway has very few if any mistakes. I don;t even recall a penalty on him.

A player that steps up when a teammate goes out and who improves the play of all around him is my definition of most valuable player.

Very Good Possibility

The team had high hopes for Chad when he came out of college and if not for the injury in his rookie year, he’d be much further along in his developement. Technically, this is only his second year in the league and he has improved tremendously in that span. Several Pro Bowls down the road is a very real possibility.
