Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Something fans of the Eags and the Vikes will enjoy

Taken from Bill Simmons column today:

** Philly's Andy Reid will be battling former assistant Brad Childress on Sunday in a matchup Peter King described as "teacher vs. pupil." Teacher vs. pupil???? That explains everything! Do you think Reid tutored Childress in classes like "Screwing up a Two-Minute Drill," "Hanging Your QB Out to Dry," "Dumb and Possibly Damaging Field Goal Attempts," "Idiotic Short-Yardage Calls," "Special Teams Collapses," "How To Blow Your Challenges," "Leaving Yourself With No Timeouts" and "How To Remain Calm As You're Getting Booed By Your Own Fans"?

I don't know about Reid

But around here, and around Minnesota in general, Childress gets a pretty bad rap. Everyone was calling for him to get fired after last year, and through the beginning of this year, but I think that has clouded their judgment and blinded them from seeing that he has improved significantly this year. That, and he does, for the most part, have the players playing hard and gelling.

and then...

Not saying he hasn’t made huge strides over the course of the season, but the last 30 seconds of the final game of the regular season is a terrible time to show signs of regression.

With a timeout and 30+ seconds on the clock with the prospect of a 50 yard FG attempt, you need better than what the Vikes showed. Just pointing out that peoples concerns aren’t unfounded.

It’s those who pinned seven fumbles on Childress that need to get real.

Yeah the end of the Giants game was definitely puzzling. But no one should be able to seriously argue that Childress hasn’t improved this season. He had a relapse, but up until that point, minus the QB draw with 30 secs left on 4th and 1 (wtf Childress?), he was doing pretty well.

The Players...

believe in him and are buying into his plan for the team. That’s the only thing that really matters.

I dont think the end of the game incident is that big a deal.

A 50 yarder is on the absolute edge of a reasonable FG correct? If they rush getting a play in just to get it off there’s a HUGE risk of a sack, fumble, interception or other Negative yardage. If that had happened you’d be screaming about that instead. No, they took a little too long making sure they had nothing less than a great play called which led to the 9 seconds left timeout. BUT that allowed them to make absolutely sure they had a great play called that would ONLY gain some yardage OR be thrown away, etc so as not to risk anything and not have the FG attempt.

It was not that big a deal. Way too much was made about it.

stupid thing….i meant that to be a response to LoveHate’s post right above it.

haha I was able to reply. sucka

by Frost on Jan 2, 2009 11:06 PM CST up reply actions

Why not.

If it doesn’t kill you…

But, because 50 yards is on the absolute edge, you need to try and advance the ball. With thirty seconds on the clock, call a time out. You obviously point out that you can’t lose any yardage, but run something for the needed yardage and get down; spike the ball and kick it.

It didn’t end up costing anything this time, however, there are much better decisions than bickering amongst the coaches on the sideline and calling a timeout at 9 seconds. At least call the timeout at 4 or 5. Make it look like you know what you’re doing.

by LoveHate on Jan 3, 2009 7:16 PM CST up reply actions

I Respectfully DIsagree

At the 2 minute warning, the Vikes had two timeouts left and were at the Giant 46 yd line. They needed 23 yards to make it a 40 yd attempt, which in the NFL today is almost automatic.

3 of the next 4 plays were runs. As the head coach, the man making the big dollars for exactly these types of situations, he has GOT to be better prepared. He HAS to know what part of the playbook to look at for these situations, and not let the clock tick down for 20 precious seconds before calling the final timeout. Especially when his play calls are to run it up the middle. It was a 1st down play w/ :36 left. Whether AD ripped off 30 yards or -2, you KNOW the clock is going to keep running, so you have a play ready, whether it’s spike the ball or call the last time out.

It was typical Childress “Prevent Offense,” where in trying to not leave enough time for the Giants to do anything (and just running it up-the-middle), he stuck Longwell with a 50yd FG attempt. Luckily we made it. Winning cures a lot of ills, but that was poor clock management, plain and simple.

Actually, if you look at his stats this season, I’d rather have Longwell kick a field goal from 50 yards out, where he has 100% completion, than from inside 50 yards, where it’s something like an 80%.

And what’s the deal with icing the kicker twice in a row? It would have been three, but Childress tried to get cute and run that quick play after the first one. I thought that was considered unsportsmanlike conduct. Didn’t Joe Gibbs take some heat for that last season?

by Frost on Jan 3, 2009 8:36 AM CST up reply actions

lol No, I would rather take a shorter field goal than a long one. I’m just pointing out that he’s been on the money from 50+ yards so, looking only at the statsheet and ignoring reason, he was more likely to make it from that distance than the other.

by Frost on Jan 3, 2009 11:21 PM CST up reply actions

Longwell

We know what Longwell can do. We also knew what Gary Anderson could do and were stunned a decade ago.
I believe Childress tries to get us close enough for an attempt at the win, while fans are yelling, step on the throat. The point is to set yourself up so you are not getting blown out and maybe everything will fall into place at the end of the game. It’s not a philosophy I agree with, but it is working more often than not. Will it bite us on Sunday?

by DBQViking on Jan 3, 2009 10:04 AM CST reply actions

There just aren’t that many opportunities to Step on the throat of anyone in today’s NFL. Most games are played to within 14 points.

Fact is…our team is actually built to compete outdoors and in cold weather which will certainly help us.

IF and i mean IF we can get by the Eagles then we can certainly give a fighting chance in the outdoor weather in Carolina and New York.

Personally I like how our team is built. I know its not super fan friendly but a team that can power run all day :-) and field a crushing, dominating defense is one that I personally like to watch and one that has a great chance to go into someone’s house and play it tough.
