New Stadium Talk
I cannot believe it was this long until the stadium talk again. In the Star Trib, I do not want to see the VIkes moving to LA. It is looking like a very good possibility right now with the lease on the current stadium running out in 2011. Wilf said that he does not plan on moving or selling the team in the near future. The league is monitoring potential stadium developments in the Los Angeles area but has declined to comment on specific sites or teams that might move to the region. Roski's Majestic Real Estate Co. agreed with NFL officials not to make any formal overtures to team owners until Industry officials certified the plan, which they could do today at a city council meeting.

Its not a 'very good possibility'...
If any team goes to L.A it’ll be the Rams or Raiders. The rams have no fan support right now or any reason to not start fresh. The Raiders could move cuz its crazy al davis. anything can happen with him. The vikings are too good of a team to be moved right now, unless its moved to a new stadium in 2012! Go Zigi Go!

I see A Bay Area team moving down
Raiders
- - They already have a fan base there
- - Like Macdaddy said, Al Davis
- - Oakland has the worst stadium in the league
- - Raiders will not want to play in Oakland if the A’s get a new stadium and they are stuck with that monstrosity.
- - If the 49ers get a new stadium in either SF or San Jose, the Radiers will be the only team around in Bay area that did not get a new stadium (Giants, A’s, 49ers), thus Crazy Al may move them.
49er’s
- - They have already seriously threatened to move to San Jose within the past 2 years, thus they have their bags packed already.
- - 49er’s are the biggest stadium crybabies in the league right now, they have a crappy stadium but they are actively using it as leverage.
- - Many San Franciscan transplants in LA, strong base.
Did you notice what was not a criteria? LOSING! Just because a team loses does not mean they are going to move! I hear that same stupid arguement with every sports franchise when it starts to loses, “Oh my god, they are losing and going to move to . . . insert city” The Royals are baseball’s whipping boy, but they are not going to move to Las Vegas because they are a bad team. The Vikings are not going to move to LA because they did not win the Super Bowl this year. Winning and losing has very very very little to do with moving a team.
Teams lose all the time, but a transition to a new city is very rare. Fan bases swell and shrink, it does not mean the team is failing. There are a ton of bandwagon fans out there who hitch their support behind an exciting team. Take the Cardinals for instance. How many Vikings fans were at the game earlier this year? It looked like it was about 40-50% of the stadium. How many Cardinals fans were there for the NFC Championship game? It was a sea of red. Winning just means you have to deal with the dush bag bandwagon fans. A true measure of a teams base is when they are not always winning. When the city hates the head coach and all seems lost, when the economy is in the crapper, when the QB still has his umbilical cord attached . . . yet the team still sells out for the umpteenth time in a row. That is a base. That is the fan that will be there through thick and thin.
Minnesota has a strong base of football loving fans. They sell out almost every game even in bad economic times. Only an idiot would take a team away from a perfectly serviceable stadium within a great fan base.
On the other hand, LA is a horrible area to build a fan base. Fans only show up to the games if the team is winning. And even then you can’t get them to show up on time. How long did it take for the stands to fill for the baseball playoffs earlier this year? How long did it take for fans to show up for a huge rivalry game between the Dodgers and Giants which featured Barry Bonds attempting to tie Hank Aarons record? 4 frickin innings! That is not a good fan base. Only an idiot would move his team there. (Al Davis)

wishful thinking
zygi has no reason not to move the team. he doesn’t owe the people of minnesota anything. he has no roots there, he doesn’t care about the vikings tradition. he is a n.j. business man who is obviously a very smart man when it comes to business and to him the vikings are a business. unfortunately he doesn’t know much about football or we wouldn’t be stuck w/ such a shiity coach and rick spielman, the man that built the 1-15 dolphins. the vikings are the least valuable team in the league w/ the least revenue. l.a. is a huge market and he would make a killing. the legislature of minnesota has laughed in his face about a stadium and the people of minnesota have let them. i have been a viking fan my entire life. i live and die w/ every game. i would be beyond suprised if the vikings are still in minnesota in 2012.

Why woudln't Zygi move?
I know he makes promises to Vikings fans but it’s probably more about money than anything. I read somewhere that the Vikings had the lowest stadium revenue in the league last year. Not sure how we stack up this year but how far can you move in one season when you’re in the same stadium?
Zygi Wilf is from New Jersey, with no ties to the Twin Cities at all other than the ownership of the Vikings. What does he care if everyone loves the team or would hate him if he moved the team?
I’m not saying he should move them, I’m just thinking rationally about what he is probably thinking. He sure talks about a new stadium a lot, and it appears as though Minnesota taxpayers don’t want to give him one (I don’t blame them, he’s a multi-millionaire and he should build his own stadium) so what else can he do?

I think...
That Zygi wants a stadium because it will make the franchise much more valuable. He is hoping that with a winning team it will be easier to get people excited about the vikes and wiling to pay for a stadium. He is definitely looking for a return on his investment.
However, moving the team could be a complete disaster financially, especially if it is to L.A.

I don't think he will move the team...
but I think he will sell to someone who will, if there isn’t a resolution to the stadium issue very soon.

LA? Not likely
LA’s been talking about building a new stadium for 10 years now and hasn’t even gotten close. The Coliseum and Rose Bowl both got shot down by the NFL, and the latest proposal is part of a mall in the City of Industry, out in Riverside County, and even the mall isn’t going to get started now.
If the Vikes move to LA, it won’t be for a long time. Besides, the Jags, Rams, and Saints are way more likely to move.

Good point
The Jags are such an afterthought down in Florida. No company wants to put their name on the stadium. As long as Jacksonville plays and Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, I would hope we’re safe.

Don't focus on L.A
Los Angeles is the pre-occupation in everyone’s mind when it comes to this team re-locating, and you think that if you can somehow cross that city off the list, the Vikings are safe. Not necessarily so.
There are plenty of cities that would kill to have the NFL, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see the Vikings relocate to a city that no one is talking about. Portland, Toronto, Vegas (20-1 longshot there—get it?), Birmingham. Hell, Chicago wants a 2nd team.
You guys can scoff, but people laughed when the Colts moved from Baltimore to Indianapolis, which was/is considered a cow town. If a city with a decent population wants a team and will build a new stadium, the Vikes will leave, whether it’s LA or somewhere else.
Or how about…London? The NFL sells out a 80,000 seat stadium in 10 minutes, they have a media market that is almost as large as Los Angeles, playing games over there to match a 1 pm EST start means every game in London is in primetime, they have an untapped reservoir of souvenir sales, and a star to market them (AP).
