Randall McDaniel to be Enshrined in Pro Football Hall of Fame
Well, that was a bit of a surprise.
Yes, a member of the Vikings will be a member of the 2009 Class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. . .but it wasn't the one that I expected.
Per the press conference that just concluded on NFL.com and the NFL Network, all three of the Vikings that made the final 15. . .WR Cris Carter, G Randall McDaniel, and DT John Randle. . .made it through the first reduction from 15 down to 10. However, of those three, only McDaniel made it through the next reduction where the list was shaved from 10 down to 5.
The entire class of 2009 for the Pro Football Hall of Fame is as follows:
Bob Hayes, WR, Dallas Cowboys (Veteran's Committee selection)
Randall McDaniel, G, Minnesota Vikings
Bruce Smith, DE, Buffalo Bills
Derrick Thomas, LB, Kansas City Chiefs
Ralph Wilson, Jr., Owner, Buffalo Bills
Rod Woodson, DB, Pittsburgh Steelers
Congratulations to the entire class of 2009! More on this. . .and, specifically, the continued snubbing of Cris Carter. . .later on.

Congrats to McDaniel
Although he only spent a short time with my team – the Bucs – I just wanted to say congrats to McDaniel. He had a great career and it’s good to see him get elected to the Hall.
Although I will say I’m also VERY surprised Cris Carter didn’t get in.

Class
Some rumors state that McDaniel was always the classiest guy in the Viking locker room. If the voters are going to put in one Viking, they picked the guy in the trenches who kept his mouth shut around the media. I think they are trying to humble the great Cris Carter.

Carter will have his time
No worries about that.
It’s great to see defenders and O-line getting the vote. Way too many QB’s and HB’s are in, not nearly enough O-line. McDaniel was one of the best

True, but not really the point
I mean, either you’re a Hall of Fame guy or you’re not. Carter clearly is. I think it’s BS that the selection committee decides that there’s already a WR in this class, there’s not enough defensive guys, or there’s already a Viking in the class.
Carter was the best WR in the history of the NFL not named Jerry Rice, and whether some sports writer thinks he needs to be humbled, or ran his mouth too much as a player, or runs his mouth too much as a studio analyst, is completely irrleevant to whether or not he deserves to be in the HOF. Because if that’s the case, tell me why Michael Irvin is in, please?

You're kidding, right?
I mean Carter had a great career but I wouldn’t put him any higher than an Art Monk who took forever to get into Canton.
by VikingBillArlingtonVA on Feb 1, 2009 7:26 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
no, I think you're kidding
Chris Carter leads Art Monk in every single category. 161 more receptions. 1,178 more yards. 62 more touchdowns. Chris was an 8 time pro-bowler, while Monk was only a pro bowler 3 times. Don’t get me wrong here… Art Monk was one of the best receivers of all time, and he deserves to be in Canton. But statistically, Chris Carter is the 2nd best WR in NFL history. I guess Dan Marino doesn’t deserve to be in the hall of fame, since he’s 2nd in stats now, and he never won a ring! CC should’ve been a first ballot HOFer.

I'm an outsider (i.e. not a Vikes fan)...
…but I completely agree. Carter should be in, no questions asked. He was so reliable for so long and even if you took the approach of just looking at his numbers (which it seems many voters do), then he deserves it.

I'm kidding? Sure it's not you?
Really? Carter’s numbers are demonstrably better than Monk’s in every substantial receiving category, while playing with far inferior quarterbacks over the bulk of his career.
I’m stunned that you rate Carter no better than Monk.

Unbelievable!
Wow! I really can’t believe that Cris Carter didn’t get in…but yet they inducted the owner of a team that lost 4 straight superbowls. I blame Gary Anderson for missing the infamous FG. If not for that Cris Would have his ring and be in by now.

Congrats to Randell
very deserving, but Carter should have been in too. This class easily should have had 2 Vikings.
The politics??? Brings me to a non=football snub-Tony Oliva. Overlooked because he was not a flashy big city player. If he were a Yankee he would be in. 3 AL batting titles and a creer hindered because arthroscopic surgery was not available. I can’t believe I didn’t even see him in Ted Williams Hitters Hall of Fame in Tampa.
Back to football. I think there is a strong case for signing Warner to a 2 year deal. He sure displayed guts when coming from behind. Something the Vikings could use. A QB who can run the length of the field under pressure.

Sad.
It’s sad to see Cris Carter not make the Hall of Fame once again. I was glad to see him leave Minnesota, but I still believe that he deserves to be in Canton.

But...
My favorite Cris Carter moment came when he was a Miami Dolphin, and it was the look on his face after Gary Anderson hit the long field goal to win the game, after Carter had just told his Dolphin teammates that Anderson couldn’t make one from that far away. :)~

Really?
How about the dozens and dozens of amazing tiptoe, one-handed catches he made throughout his Vikings career, becoming undoubtedly the 2nd best WR of all-time? It’s a disgrace that he’s been shut out these past two years, and I’ll definitely be mentioning it in my next post.

Yeah, really.
I was so tired of his attitude before he retired, that I do not have much love for the guy. He made some great plays as a Viking, but that look on his face when Anderson made that kick still stands out more than anything when I think about Cris Carter.
Despite being tired of his antics, I still believe he should already be in the Hall of Fame.
His one handed catch against the Bucs is probably my favorite moment of his as a Viking.

"He Can't kick that far!"
That was pretty damn funny, and I still remember it vividly too. However, I get grumpy with guys who say that they didn’t like Carter’s attitude and the way he interacted with others on the sideline. The truth of the matter is, Cris’ attitude NEVER boiled over off the field, and they never really affected any outcomes on the field either. He was a leader to a young Randy Moss and embraced his HUGE arrival on the scene in Minnesota when guys like TO would have been trying to hold him back and stop him from “Takin’ away my catches”. Sure, Cris ran his mouth quite a bit (and still does on ESPN) but he was an EXTREMELY tough player, a vocal leader on the sideline and a good teammate. Cris Carter will always be one of my favorite Vikes of all-time and he UNDOUBTEDLY deserved a first ballot entrance, let alone a second ballot nod. It’s a complete and total shame.
If “third time’s a charm” doesn’t come to fruition next year then there are going to be some molotov cocktails flyin’.

Miami Game
I was on the sideline that game. As he came off the field I got a great pic of him. Didn’t look happy and ready to retire.
Whatever on your complaints. He tossed a ball to me at a Tampa game during warm ups. I could have ran with the ball but threw a good pass to his extended hand. He knew people were egging me to run with the ball. But that pass was priceless. Vhris looked at me pointed and gabe me a thumbs up. I spoke with a few people who met Carter here.
(I volunteered at SB festivities(, every one of them said Chris was kind and always willing to say hello.
No! Chris Carter is A1 with me. Maybe it was the whiny kids who were too good to listen to a seasoned vet. As a teacher/coach I get a little fed up with that attitude from some kids.
You think some of the whining and back talk would have been tolorated by coaches or Vets in the days of Purple People Eaters, The Dallas Fearsome Front Four or the incredibe Steel Curtin? Chris knew that type of respect and dicipline were eroding and it made him sick.

Poor Cris
Like everyone else, I’m shocked that Cris Carter was left out yet again. In my opinion, he’s the second best receiver to ever play the game, which obviously makes him better than many of the receivers already in Canton. It’s a crime that he’s not in yet. He should’ve been a first ballot player.

Congratulations Randall McDaniel
He was freakish strong, and a rock in the trenches for more than a decade. I believe his 12 consecutive pro bowls make him more deserving than ANY of this years other finalists. He was a class act. CC will have his turn
