Around SBN: Newcastle Battle Injury Woes Ahead of Tottenham

Eagles/Vikings Second Half Open Thread

Thus far, the Eagles' only touchdown has come from the right hand of Tarvaris Jackson, and the Minnesota defense has done a pretty good job against the Eagles thus far.

On the other side, the Vikings have put together a couple of nice scoring drives, and find themselves trailing by 2 at halftime.

Minnesota has the momentum going into the locker room. . .let's see if they can turn it into something positive.

For real

Lets pound that rock with a big does of 28 and 29

by Gregor22 on Jan 4, 2009 5:20 PM CST reply actions

As far as...

Second half adjustments go, the Vikings are in a great position to build off of their first half. The Eagles without much success offensively, need to find a way to get it to Westbrook and keep McNabb protected.

by LoveHate on Jan 4, 2009 5:20 PM CST reply actions

Let’s this show going again

by purplegrey on Jan 4, 2009 5:20 PM CST reply actions

First half thoughts

are that the opening drive will be crucial to keep the generally decent offensive tempo going. Defense needs to continue to pressure McNabb. And for god’s sake Chili give TJax some rollouts to get the pressure off him.

by VikingBillArlingtonVA on Jan 4, 2009 5:20 PM CST reply actions

Never understood why T-Jack does not have more designed QB draws to slow some of the blitzing down

I can't

Complain with how this game is going..its looking good

by Gregor22 on Jan 4, 2009 5:22 PM CST reply actions

Hmm

Mistakes

It’s going to be about who makes mistakes in the second half

Philly has been quiet but efficient in that regard

Vikes have one bad pass by T-jack (and a poor punt return hat directly contributed to a FG)

Vikes keep it cool, make no big mistakes, they win

by Skippy the Bush Kangaroo on Jan 4, 2009 5:22 PM CST reply actions

Tjack need to pump fake. DB are jumping the rec. route

by vikefansd on Jan 4, 2009 5:23 PM CST reply actions

The Blitzes need to knock McNabb Down and stop 3rd down conversions.

Man the body slam T.Jack took was ugly! Remembeer when Frerotte got slammed against the Bears, good things!

by solafide on Jan 4, 2009 5:23 PM CST reply actions

the defense has had a nice long rest too

hopefully the Vikes open up with a bit of a drive and the D comes back roaring

Without Plax - Eagles vs. Giants is a tossup

plax was a true eagle killer, without him its man to man on the outside and Dawk walkin’ up to the line of scrimmage to stop Jacobs. Boss gives the birds problems like any TE, expect some big plays from him.

Home field is only a slight advantage, Eagles have won 4 of the last 6 at Giant Stadium. I was more worried about the noise in the dome than I will be about the noise in th Meadowlands. Weather is going to be a big deal: the key is little or no wind, rain and snow are not as big a deal as the wind.

Eagles can definitely beat the Giants.

by solafide on Jan 4, 2009 6:46 PM CST reply actions

Off-season needs:

(1) A center (I believe Birk is gone), a right OG and/or OT in the draft. I am a firm believer in starting with the offensive line as the basis of a succesful team.

(2) Some coaching tweaks on special teams, which helped kill the Vikings today.

(3) A quality veteran QB to compete with/back up Tarvaris Jackson. Jackson showed me enough down the stretch to think he could be a decent starter in the NFL, but today he did just enough to help the Vikings lose.

by MidnightRambler on Jan 4, 2009 6:46 PM CST reply actions

I would have to agree. The offensive line just couldn’t get it done this year. And I couldn’t help but think all game what we could do with somebody who was a more fearsome passing threat at QB. Jackson has potential, nobody should argue with that, but he hasn’t shown the ability to mount a come back yet.

by Frost on Jan 4, 2009 6:48 PM CST up reply actions

You guys need a QB in the worst way

TJack doesn’t look like a winner to me. He is a marginal/below average NFL QB that isn’t going to have what it takes to push his team over the top. With AP on this team the Vikes QB should have a field day with play action.

If I’m drafting for the Vikes I look at getting better and building depth in the secondary. Vikes run defense is clearly stout, they already have half the puzzle solved. Get more/better safeties and corners – as a bonus this will improve the Vikes special team coverage units since safeties and corners are usually good ST guys.

by CowboysSuck on Jan 4, 2009 7:36 PM CST up reply actions

Tjack is just warming the spot for John David-Booty

Personally, I think Tjack is a little better than you’re giving him credit for. I would consider him more of a serviceable QB, rather than a marginal one. With better protection, I think he can do some things, and he definitely has a big arm. I’d like to see what he can learn from this season, and how he can improve next year. He’s really the only option for next year, anyway, so hopefully he can come through.

I agree with secondary depth, though. If they can find a stud college corner for nickle packages (I think Griffin really improved by the end of this season, and is now a viable CB to go with Toine.), that should shore up some of those long third down conversions. It might improve the ST’s play, but there were guys so out of position all year that it really had to have been terrible coaching that plagued them more than anything.

The TRUTH on T-Jack

I have been playing or watching pro football for over forty years, and take my word for it; Jackson has some of the worst instincts I have ever seen for a QB. He is a nice kid, but is NOT going to ever be a starter in the NFL after this fiasco. He will be relegated to backup duties or third string on another team after Childress gets canned. We need to be honest and start over on offense and build around Adrian. We waste his immense talents by prror coaching. The Special Teams need a major overhaul and all new coaches.

by misterdizz on Jan 4, 2009 6:51 PM CST reply actions

I’m from Northern Iowa and a loyal fan of the Vikes and Iowa STate cyclones and right now, I don’t know which one is harder to cheer for. I need a beer…….seriously……

by iowa_cyclone on Jan 4, 2009 6:53 PM CST reply actions

At least the Cyclones

Have a new coach and maybe some optimism?

by DBQViking on Jan 4, 2009 6:54 PM CST up reply actions

Our team..

is one of the most talented in the NFL. Too bad it will be wasted on this coach. Zygi will give him at least 2 more years.

"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"

Oh the pain...

But at least we took the Division, and maybe that’s a damned good place to start.

by DCPurple on Jan 4, 2009 6:53 PM CST reply actions

Wilf

Will not fire Chilly. I think there will be some coaches who depart, Spec. teams and maybe Frazier get a Head coach job. But Brad will stay

by DBQViking on Jan 4, 2009 6:53 PM CST reply actions

Zygi, if you read this, try and get Shannahan. I want to read on ESPN or PFT about how you called Shanahan up IMMEDIATELY after his 2 week vacation and offered him a position.

by Frost on Jan 4, 2009 6:55 PM CST reply actions

I'm so tired..

of seeing a Cadillac offense driven like a Yugo. Our O-Line is above average. Our WR’s are decent. Our RB’s are best in the league. Yet Baldy won’t admit we need a QB, and he definitely won’t play to the limited strengths of the QB we have.

"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"

by mutleyil on Jan 4, 2009 6:56 PM CST reply actions

THE END HAS COME!!!

Bottom Line, the Vikes O couldn’t sustain drives in the 2nd half and McNabb with his uncanny ability to avoid the sack converted 3rd downs for the Eagles! Longwell and Adrian must feel helpless, they weren’t used well at all in the 2nd half!!

by solafide on Jan 4, 2009 6:56 PM CST reply actions

Who was the.....

Who are some coaches that have been canned after taking their teams to the playoffs?

by iowa_cyclone on Jan 4, 2009 6:56 PM CST reply actions

One last time

FIRE CHILDRESS, BEVEL and SPECIAL TEAMS COACH – bring in a real Head Coach; draft the best WR available, rebuild the O-LINE and get a QB through trade or any other means possible. Dump T-Jack and Gus and make the best use of AD. Christ it aint impossible to do and to watch the team be so horribly outcoached and using underqualified guys like T-Jack, it is a sad thing to witness. I love the Vikings as much as anyone but I am honest and know how to build a team that can win.

by misterdizz on Jan 4, 2009 6:57 PM CST reply actions

I agree

Its been fun this tear thanks to all

by Anxious on Jan 4, 2009 6:58 PM CST up reply actions

Stuck with Childress...

…for at least another season, I am sure. So as Viking fans we have to hope the organization makes the best moves it can. O-line in the draft, quality veteran QB to compete with Jackson, overhaul of special teams coaching, and a wide receiver.

I left wide-out off my intial post, in part because a top-priced free agent WR would be wasted with the present offense, and in part because I think shoring up the o-line and QB position is more important. A great WR is wasted with a shkay QB and/or porous o-line.

needs

gotta get a right tackle. cook was a center in college. will he take over for birk? who is the receiver’s coach? our guys can’t get open to save their lives. why do we run deep routes when we are being blitzed all the time? tjack isn’t gonna get it done when it counts, sorry, and i kinda like the guy. chilly has got to go. i hate it when coaches have no emotion on the sidelines. give me somebody that has a fire under their ass.

West cost offense

I dont like it with the talent we have

by Anxious on Jan 4, 2009 7:01 PM CST reply actions

I don't like it

with the talent anyone has.

I think its effectiveness has worn out pretty good.

by cheaptoy on Jan 4, 2009 7:03 PM CST up reply actions

I hate to say this

But i have been saying it all along. TJack is not ready. chilly is stubborn to stubborn to be a head coach

by vikefansd on Jan 4, 2009 7:01 PM CST reply actions

T.Jack is not sad at all !!!

This offensive play calling etc. etc… is sadder than T.Jack by far. They find something that works, i.e. the screen to Jimmy K. and then Bevell goes back to what doesn’t work! The Vikes are stuck in a rut with the coaching situation. Next season our players are gonna have to be Spartan.esque because I don’t really think the play calling / scheming will change much at all. We’ll probably lose our GREAT D.Coordinator.

by solafide on Jan 4, 2009 7:02 PM CST reply actions

Am I the only one

That thinks the game was won more by Philly’s D than by any coaching blunders? Aside from the clock management at the end of the first half, I didn’t think it was too horrible of a job by the coaching staff. (special teams excluded. Can we get more than one guy on the right side, please?)

But lets give credit where it’s due, Philly’s defensive line was pretty freaking good today. They had Jackson running around most of the day, and bottled up AP and CT pretty good, except for a couple big plays. Their secondary did a pretty good job of keeping the receivers covered when they blitzed, too.

Maybe I’m just trying to convince myself of this, but to go directly back to the “Fire Childress” crap because of one loss seems short sighted and very reactionary.

by cheaptoy on Jan 4, 2009 7:02 PM CST reply actions

Banged Up Vikes

Look at the injured list… even if we won this game, we probably wouldn’t get any further against a well-rested Giants team that has it all on the line. Sure, it’d be nice to go deeper into the playoffs, but let’s face it; even if TJ was having a great day, the Vikes took a lot of damage getting this far.

Time to regroup, lick our wounds, and start scheming for the 2009 draft and season.

by DCPurple on Jan 4, 2009 7:04 PM CST reply actions

Not to be picky

But they would have played Carolina.

by cheaptoy on Jan 4, 2009 7:06 PM CST up reply actions

The Vikings had no Drives in the 2nd half, end of story.

Due to bad execution, playcalling, etc….. The Vikes couldn’t get into FG range at all in the 2nd Half So we deserved to lose this Game. The 1st half was a tease and Chilly got outcoached and couldn’t make adjustments for the 2nd half. Also Birks horrible snap killed a good drive we had going!

Well..............

All good things must come to a end. Here’s to a successful draft and a charged up 09 season!! SKOL

Why does no one see it?

Tarvaris simply has the worst football instincts I have seen in a NFL quarterback in many years. That goes beyond anything that coaching will remedy. It is SO glaring an issue to me, despite feeling sympathy for him, I would ditch him and get a quarterback who was born to play the position moreso than him. He has raw athletic skills but really is never going to be a top NFL quarterback – and this team deserves to at least have a player who has that potential. The way he never “feels” the pressure, the way he consistently throws way too late, the way he never moves enough laterally to buy the extra second, the way he routinely launches balls when the play is already dead.. the list is endless on why he is not ever going to be the answer. It should be obvious when you watch him play. It is to me.

By far the best site

I hate I did not find this site until a couple of weeks ago. But this site kept me sane during an insane game. ThanksGonzo and as solafide said above go Panthers.
