Around SBN: Peyton Manning Medically Cleared To Resume NFL Career

Jackson is not the answer.......

Here's my wish list for 2009.

Star-divide

Reading the various posts regarding the changes that the Vikes needed I wanted to throw in my 2 cents.  We may as well get over the fact that we are not going to get a change in coaching and for what it's worth I don't think we need to.  Bevell is not the best "O" coordinator in the league and we know that, but a good quarterback can make an average coach look like a genius (see Mike Smith, John Harbaugh, Tony Sparano).

Jackson simply doesn't have the tools to play the position.  I think he has some of the physical tools but I don't think the coaching staff has confidence in opening the playbook for him as evidenced by his interceptions on Sunday.  There are obvious situations where Jackson needs to audible out of a play and doesn't.  Most offensive coordinators give the quarterback 2 plays.  One to call in the huddle and a second in the event he sees something in the defense (blitz, coverage, personnel)  that he can audible to.  This rarely if ever happens.  Jackson may be a good quarterback eventually but can we wait 2 more years.  Will Peterson and the rest of the defense wait that long before they want to leave. Had he played the entire year we would have been a 4-12 team with the best running back in the game and a top 10 defense.  Unacceptable.

Here's an option that I want to throw out there. (not that it's going to happen but I wouldn't mind it)

Seattle is in the midst of a coaching change with many needs and not enough draft picks to cover all of those needs.  We are quarterback away from being a legitimate contender (we have some minor needs but not as blaring as quarterback).  Although the front office for Seattle and Minnesota are not the most cordial, this deal would make sense.

We trade our first (23rd) and a bundle a couple of other picks whether it's this year or next to Seattle for Hasselbeck.  We assume his contract which isn't up until 2010 which helps Seattle's salary cap. Mora is going to want his own guy and is going to need rebuild through the draft.  Seattle has a ton of need positions (LB, CB, OL, DL, RB) and will need the draft picks while lower their salary cap situation to pick up free agents in 2010.

Hasselbeck brings what we need most.  A legitimate NFL quarterback with a good arm and a great running game to compliment his strongest asset which is to sell the play action and the ability to read defenses and he's familiar with the WC offense.  We go into next season with Berrian, Rice, Allison, which is an upgrade from what he had in Seattle plus AP and Chester.  Sign Birk, find an upgrade at RT through the draft.  Move Tyrell Johnson into starting slot SS and M. Williams at FS.  EJ Henderson is back from his injury with Leber and Greenway at LB.

Just my opinion.  Probably wishful thinking but...........what do we really have to lose

I definitely agree

Although, from what I’ve read we might need no more than a second rounder. It’d be nice to keep the first rounder and use it for some O-line depth.

In AP I trust

A first rounder for Hasselbeck??

He got so banged up this year there is no telling if he will ever recover and be a productive starter again. A second round pick might be OK but I still think there are other good options in free agency. If we commit to trading for a QB there are some trade possibilities that would have a much bigger upside with less bust potential. Hasselbeck only has a few years left as a starter even if he recovers.

Good point

I think he got beat up pretty well this year. My hope would be that a running game would take some of the pressure off him. We wouldn’t need him to drop back 45 times a game but it would be nice to have a guy that could drop back 30 times and complete 23 of them.

Wrong

Tarvaris Jackson is the answer. Interceptions? Nobody will throw less picks that we pick up in FA or the draft. You people should reconsider.

As A UGA Alum

I would love to see Stafford play for the Vikes. However, he has several holes in his game and they are the same as TJs. He makes poor decisions, stares down receivers and has some consistency problems. He has all of the physical tools necessary to be an awesome NFL QB: laserbeam throws, an exceptional deep ball, ideal size and excellent pocket mobility, but I don’t think he is ready to start in the NFL right away. However, I don’t think there is a chance in hell that he will be available at 23. He will go #1 (Det), #3 (KC), #8 (Jax), #10 (SF), #17 (NYJ), #18 (Chi), #19 (TB) or #20 (Det again) and never last until the Vikes.

Agreed

Watching the game he has thrown two picks, and at least two other balls that would have been picked in the NFL. He is a GREAT college QB, but if he plays any significant time in the NFL will be as a RB/FB/TE.

QB Comparisons

Some other QB Ratings against good defenses
v. Eagles
TJ: 45.4
Romo: 55.8
Eli: 73.5

TJ v. Giants: 88.5
Romo v. Baltimore: 66.2
Eli v. Baltimore: 73.3

TJ could be the answer. Better QBs struggle against good defenses, too. That’s why they’re good defenses. Philly was ranked 3rd in pass D.

No, no, no...

-I hate T-Jack!-

You need to quite with all of the nuance. We didn’t win the Superbowl and it’s all his fault!!!!!!

don't forget

about the incredible coaching staff too. T-Jax is not our long-term solution at QB, but the coaching staff is worse.

Exactly

Notice that Eli (career rating: 76.1) only plays slightly worse against the best defenses while TJ and others struggle mightily. Also, TJ’s career rating is 76.5, but it is an erratic mid-seventies rating rather than a steady one like Eli’s.

I’m really not a fan of the overrated Eli except that he exemplifies the “game manager” type of QB far better than most of the scrap-heap guys who are labeled as such.

EVERY ONE CALM DOWN...........

It takes the average qb @ least 3 years to learn the West Coast Scheme, Tavaris Jackson will be OK trust me. He has a whole offseason to work with his new weapons.

That’s what people were saying last offseason….

All you Jackson haters are a joke. The man has improved. He was more cautious to start this year (showing to me at least he learned a lesson from the previous year). Childress yanks him after two games saying now he wasn’t aggressive enough. Did he learn another lesson? In my mind absolutely and his numbers speak to that.

9 touchdowns and 2 interceptions on the year. 115, 143, 135, and 88 QB rating in his return. It’s called QB development. He’s a good guy, a great athlete, and he HAS IMPROVED! You’re right that’s what we said last offseason and HE IMPROVED and we are saying it again.

All of you Jackson haters are a joke and aren;t being fair to the man. He has as much or more talent and potential as any Vikings QB in the last twenty years. Fact.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!

Ok, fine…. you can tell me “I told you so” when T-Jack becomes a star next season and leads us to the promised land…..

I hope your dreams are as entertaining as your delusions. And you used the same insult twice in one post. Bit of a faux pas.

Both

Randall Cunningham and Daunte Cullpepper are much better versions of the same QB that TJ represents. To indicate otherwise is just not honest
