What happened

to every single viking fan wanting Jackson to come in for frerrotte?  I just don't get why everybody expects him to be a Tom Brady or Manning.  He won't ever be.  In the Eagles game, they were bringing the heat on blitz's every play so they could make Jackson feel uncomfortable and because of one "bad" game, everyone wants a new Qb.  If we get an OT in the first round and replace Cook or possible put the new OT in McKinneys spot and move McKinney to the other side, you have an awesome line.  The game was not Jacksons fault.  On the INT by Samuel, he was planning on breaking on the short pass, but if it would have been a double move.. it for sure would have been a big play.

It’s not just one game. Can you honestly say you want to go into next year with Jackson. Will the rest of the team wait?

by mills423 on Jan 7, 2009 2:29 PM CST reply actions

yes.. yes i can...

cuz he is our best option… what happens when everyone gets old and we traded 2 top draft picks for a QB.. Cassel would be a bust for us.. cuz new england has something that we dont.. WIDE RECEIVERS WHO CAN GET SEPERATION… its a little hard when our own WR’s cant get any seperation… id like to see you throw perfect passes all game… it wont happen.. We were outplayed by a good team.. no matter what.. didnt matter what team made it to the playoffs the in the north division… they would have lost in the 1st round anyways.. whether it would be the bears or packer (LOL!!) but seriously…. why would u trade draft picks for a QB who will be in his mid-30s… if he were to get injured in the first game.. what would we have? we would have wasted draft picks and money.. no matter what u want.. the vikings will be happy with jackson.. everyone was just so happy with him at the end of the season minus the eagles game… make up ur damn minds…

I can as well.

Nobody needs to wait. With the way he played overall in the last few games has showed us how well he can be. He will only improve over the offseason. Before the Eagle game everybody was on their knnes for T-Jack and since he gets blitzed an entire game and throws ONE and only ONE interception, people start calling for his head.

T-Jack Improve in the Off-Season?

Yes, that’s it! Of course players improve when they’re sitting on their ass doing nothing! Why don’t the Vikes go for Michael Vick, he’ll be an absolute superstar after sitting in prison for a year and a half!

by DCPurple on Jan 8, 2009 8:34 AM CST up reply actions

To be fair...

There’s a huge difference between sitting in prison and working on fundamentals and training in the offseason.

Pro football players, at least to my knowledge, don’t really quit their training and whatnot when it’s the offseason. I know as a college athlete we sure as heck never stopped, so I can imagine getting paid would incite even more desire to be at the top of your game every year.

While he cannot get any type of game experience, nothing says he can’t work on his footwork, accuracy in passing drills, etc. Do I think it will make a huge difference? Probably not. But comparing him to Michael Vick sitting in prison is way off base.

Point Taken

Yes, TJack is probably in a better position to practice than Vick, but on the other hand, Vick can stay in shape, watch game footage, and study playbooks too. Maybe even get that footwork practice in :)

That being said… I was hammering the point with a bit of heavy sarcasm, Manimal, and I’ll stand by it; an off-season isn’t going transform an erratic player into consistantly good one.

by DCPurple on Jan 8, 2009 8:50 AM CST up reply actions

I totally agree.

He needs game experience for anything. I want another QB to be brought in, just wanted to play a bit of devil’s advocate there.

Consistency is definitely the problem, and the offseason, in all likelihood, won’t change that a bit.

You can play the "What if?" game all you want...

But it wasn’t a double move. Samuel had done his homework and knew it wouldn’t be. Getting one new offensive lineman will not magically change Tarvaris’ consistency as an NFL QB. Only Tarvaris can change that.

When he goes 15-35, he has to be accountable for those passes.

We all want Jackson to succeed, but the team is ready for success right now.

Not in a few years, not in a decade, but this next season. Tarvaris had a stretch of seven straight incompletions against the Eagles. I wonder how many other QBs have done that this year? I bet none of the top tier ones have.

We absolutely cannot wait another year to test the “Tarvaris Jackson Experiment” again. We, as fans, can’t take it!

Well, I can’t anyway.

I actually don’t have the numbers off hand and am not home, but McNabb had quite a few games this year that he started 1 for 8 or 2 for 10, ect….

But T.O. and his sideline histrionics wear on a quarterback. He's like the hot stripper you tried to clean up and convert into a real girlfriend. It's a lot of fun until the moment she has her second drink while out to eat with your parents. You unravel quicker than she does.

Perfect Fit

But do you really think the Vikes could pry him out of Seattle’s clutches?

The relatively recently bad blood between the Seahawks and the Vikings over the Hutch/Burleson business makes me think they’d stick a poison pill into that deal just for spite.

New Coach, New Philosophy

Mike H. is out as head coach, it’s very possible Jim Mora Jr. starts his regime off with a new QB or even Seneca Wallace. I don’t know, and honestly, I don’t care. I think we could get Hasselbeck for a second rounder, and it would be worth it. Assuming he passes a physical, he still has three or four good years left. That’s plenty of time to line up a successor, Tarvaris or otherwise.

"Growing" a QB

That seems to be Chilly’s wet dream, and sure there’s merit to it… for most QBs, that’s probably a fair expectation.

But you know… I don’t want to see the Vikings stuck with an average QB, I’d like to see a truly great QB take the field in purple and gold. Someone who, even as a rookie, commands your faith in him because he delivers the goods more times than not.

Contrary to the ‘growing’ theory of QB cultivation, you know there are QBs who moved nearly seamlessly from college to NFL because it was a natural progression for them. Year 1 in the NFL and they’re first string and doing a credible job of it. Someone like Joe Flacco, for instance, if we had to pull a top-flight rook from the deck. They’re out there, waiting to be discovered, but it’s a shot in the dark. Looking back, it seems incredible that a rookie Viking team picked Tarkenton as it’s rookie starting QB, and despite the interregnum, he was phenomenal in purple.

Anyway, I completely agree with you. I thought TJack might finally be ready after his two come-back games, but then his final performances showed us the true shape of things. Personally, I’d rather see them spring for a solid, experienced veteran to replace Gus, and give TJack more time to grow into the big-boy shoes as a back-up.

The best QB ever out of UGA. Maybe Stafford will challenge him, but I seriously doubt it.

Here here

Couldn’t have said it any better myself Manimal.

I don’t understand why so many people say he’s our only option. We have plenty of options, all we have to do is pull the trigger on a trade. There are the untouchables like the Mannings, Brady, etc., but there are backups who could be let go for a draft pick or two. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and we are desperate for a QB that can read defenses. We’re also desperate for a good coach or two, but that ain’t happening anytime soon is it?

Why don’t we trade for AJ Feeley? Childress should know him very well and he’s the third QB in Philly. Think they wouldn’t trade him for a pick or two? Sage Rosenfels has played well in his opportunities. Houston wanted a second last year after we offered a third, but no one else bit. So he’s extremely available. We’re not sure whether or not Seattle would part with Matt Hasselbeck since they appear to be rebuilding and have the fourth overall pick with which to draft a new franchise QB. It’s worth looking into. John Beck in Miami is an intriguing prospect who has been lost in the numbers and a coaching change.

There are options if the Vikings wish to look into them. And there is no excuse not to turn every stone to try and improve our QBs.

QB Feelings

Sometimes you just get a feeling about a Quarterback and you know that he’s going to have a great series or game. It isn’t always true but you get that feeling nonetheless.

I have NEVER had that feeling with T-Jack. Every time he touches the ball I break into a cold sweat and when he actually makes a good play or wise decision to throw the ball away, I come away pleasantly surprised and even shocked. The only time I remotely feel good about him is when he scrambles for yardage. It is one thing that he does well. If we still had the NFL Europe league, I would say send him there for development but since that isn’t an option, on the job training is all that we can give him. As it has been pointed out by a multitude of posters on this forum, this team is on the cusp now and is basically waiting for him.

When the entire team is waiting for the most important position on the field to be competent, it’s a recipe for disaster.

I’m sorry, but T-Jack isn’t the short term or long term answer. He is a stopgap at best. Chilly needs to swallow his pride and look for someone who can help us now.

Norm Green still sucks!

gus threw allot of picks but........

i just felt like he inspired more confidence in his teammates than did tavaris. i think tavaris could be used like randle el is used. What do u guys think????

Gus Frerotte sucks balls. Period.

Gus threw 4 picks in ONE game. How many picks did he average? 1.5? 2? T-Jack threw 4 picks in what,5 weeks? How the hell would throwing interceptions help inspire his teammates?

do you think tj would have went 7-3? look at the teams gus faced i do not have a man crush on gus, i just want to win. 34 years of futility is long enough!!!

Week One, Special Teams...

Gave up a return touchdown in a six (maybe five) point game versus the Packers. That is a win otherwise. Shainco drops an easy touchdown in week two that would have won the game. Nearly all of the Vikings games were by close margins and could have gone either way. Watching Gus play barely good enough to win was agonizing (he cost the team at least two victories and can’t be credited for the teams success). When he got hurt, he stayed on the sideline for a reason.
