Childress' thoughts on the QB situation

Courtesy the ol' NFC North Blog and Kevin Seifert:

"It's really kind of a whole offseason type of study. I'm not going to pass judgement right at this particular point. I think you owe it to everybody here in the organization, just like we always have, to turn over all the rocks and see what you have there. I would also say there is a point with Tarvaris continuing to evolve as a quarterback. While you'd like that process to happen immediately, it doesn't always happen immediately. There's not anything we're going to leave unturned as far as free agency, the draft, and that goes on until after the draft. You see who is out there. By the same token, Tarvaris is going to be here and we're going to continue to get him better."

There's what Brad Childress said (bold added by Seifert, leaving in for emphasis) regarding the QB position. It seems like, unless a Hasselbeck or similar opportunity presents itself, Tarvaris is the man going into 2009.

Of course, it's only January, but it's still fun to speculate.

FIRST!

Fine with me. Its what I would do. Tarvaris was decent there for a few weeks. The championship game was a team loss that could have been a win if our OC called better plays in the second half.

Just tell Tjack to stay calm.

you ever wonder why they don't call "better plays"?

Maybe they’re calling what they think Jackson can handle.

Maybe they are just boneheads too, but that first one is a real possibility, you have to admit.

I just wonder how many more years we’re going to have to be teased with passable QB play before he can have more than two passably good games per season. We play 16 games in a season, so two really doesn’t help all that much when you think about it.

I do have to ask one question in regards to Jackson: If he only needs time and patience to be a good QB, why no patience with the offensive coordinator? I mean, all he needs is more experience and he’ll be a good OC right? And how about Ryan Cook? He’s played in 25 games compared to Jackson’s 23, so he’s right on the learning curve too, right?

Good

I think he needs one full season under his reigns and we’ll see how he progresses. I’ve always liked T-jack hopefully he’ll let it rip next season.

Tjack needs to find another skill

Cornerback let him look at real QBs. How about return man he can take a hit. How about chart the plays on a clipboard he has real experience doing that.

QB in Minny

Fine, Name TJACK the starter for 09,
Bring Hasslebeck to compete for the starting gig.
Keep Booty at 3rd
Release Gus.

Booty Call!

Holy cow, when did JDB ever demonstrate the least capacity to QB an NFL team across 3 downs, let alone an entire game?! I mean, sure, he’s a rook, you don’t expect them to be perfect, but WTH?!

36.9

He makes T-Jack look like the Second Coming of Tarkenton!

No. JDB is just sucking up a roster spot for, "Just in case all else fails, California falls into the Pacific, Armageddon-Arrives-and-Taylor-Can’t-Throw-Today doomsday option, to keep the Vikes from drawing a penalty for not having enough warm bodies on the field.

Wow, harsh...

Jeeze, the poor guy’s a rookie. No one expected him to come in a start, or even be a second stringer. He’s the long term developmental guy/career backup. Searching for the proverbial “diamond in the rough.”

Yeesh.

Good gravy, man, what are you even judging him on? Preseason?

We should keep Booty around for two reasons:
  1. He was an overwhelmed rookie this year; let’s give him a shot to develop. Apparently the Vikings are just fine with throwing their STARTERS out there to “develop”, so I think we can try it out with our backup too.
  2. His last name alone. If he ever becomes a factor in the NFL, the possibilities for sophomoric “Booty” jokes are endless. And he better be on the Vikings if it ever happens, because it would make this site so much more entertaining!

I'm tired of waiting for a quarterback

How long do we have to wait. Get Hasselbeck and move on. If we are hoping to go into next year and Jackson is the starter we will be having the same discussion next January. However it will be with a sub .500 record and us wishing we had made a move in the offseason. I’m all for developing someone to play QB but what’s wrong with winning? It would be different if our defense was sub par and we had no running game, but that’s not the case. Let’s stop making excuses for Jackson.

Couldn't agree more mills.

I’ve said much of the same in many posts. Jackson has shown some “flashes” of greatness, but “flashes” are not what we need in a QB. I seriously doubt the Vikes will retain the division crown next year if the current coaching and QB status remains the same. However, according to Chilly, nothing will change. That is so frustrating.

Hasselbeck would be great

He fits the overall talent maturity level of this team – i.e. it is around its peak.

How much would we have to give up to get him?

I would also be OK with a rent-a-QB strategy for a year or two while we have a great nucleus: Kurt Warner or Jeff Garcia. Let TJack and JDB (if he’s still around) learn from them.

put a body on 'em
