Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

Ok, I know we've exhausted the QB topic, but...

As I'm sitting here watching this BCS National Championship game, I'm marveling at Tim Tebow. Now, I know that he is not the ideal NFL quarterback. He is often criticized for his mechanics, throwing motion, etc. But really, this kid is one of the more passionate and hardworking athletes out there.

If he falls in the draft, which I think he might, we could have a shot at him. He'd be happy to come here and have a chance to play QB at the pro level, something not everyone would be willing to give him. It just seems that with a guy as hard-working as Tebow, the chance might be worth taking. He would also be an asset because of the leadership he would bring to our offense.

What do you all think?

If he falls to the 4th round sure...

otherwise no way. He got picked twice today, and threw 4 other balls that would have been picked in the NFL (I was counting anticipating this post). He doesn’t have a very strong arm, and likes to throw off his back foot. His success is greatly influenced by the fact that the LB and S have to respect his running ability (100 yards rushing tonight). He is also surrounded by crazy speed receivers and when you can throw to wide open guys it doesn’t matter much if you float it in there.

I do think he is a decent guy and seems like a good leader, but I just don’t think he has what it takes to make it as a NFL QB.

Great Analysis!

Layin’ in wait for this one, lol. Good job Vikedawg, you nailed it down!

And you also point out something important for the Vikes… if we had a crazy speedster out there, a’la Moss, the QB gets an open receiver faster, and is sacked less often, the Vikes score way more often, the QB is more successful (refer: Culpepper), the field would be stretched a lot further than Berrian’s 20-30 yards, AP would probably pick up a big yardage increase and take less of a pounding. If we had 2 such fleet beasts, the entire opposing secondary could be pulled out of the running game equation.

A total game changer for the offense.

Maybe it’s not too late for the Vikes to go back to the table with Richardson…

Just Wondering...

His style of play reminds me of old school Joe Kapp who wasn’t known for being the greatest passer either. The main attribute Kapp had was that he was a leader. The guy was willing to go through brick walls if he thought it would help his team…In short, he was a fullback playing quarterback who wouldn’t run out of bounds but would hit a defender head on (once knocking out a Cleveland defender in the 1969 NFL Championship) to gain that extra yard. The question is: How long would he last in today’s league with that style of play?

Today's NFL

It’s brutal on the players. I’ve never seen injuries during the course of the year like I’ve seen this year, it makes everyone look fragile. And when you’re talking about the QB, the single most important position on the field for many reasons, you just can’t afford to put the guy into any more risk than absolutely necessary. I love the fact that a guy is willing to lower his shoulder and slam it through with all his heart, but you’re right; that kind of player isn’t going to last long these days.

That’s what made me so mad at T-Jack earlier in the year; the young bull may be willing to go head-to-head with opposing linebackers, but he won’t get to be an old bull that way. If it was just him on the line, who cares? But the QB carries the hopes and dreams of the entire team, and all the fans, on his shoulders, and frankly, he doesn’t have the right to be a stupid ass.

That Olde Tyme Rock 'n Roll

BTW, wasn’t Kapp a blessed marvel to watch?! The man couldn’t throw a tight spiral to save his life, the wobbliest passes in the NFL, but damned if he didn’t yank you to your feet screaming for him!

Sonny Juergenson and Billy Kilmer were cut from the same mold, especially Kilmer.

Funny thing, my fav all time QB, Tarkenton, used to catch a lot of flak for bailing out of the collapsing pocket and running around the backfield, some said he was a wimp because he wasn’t willing to ‘take the hit’. Yeah, well, that wimp went 20 years and set a slew of records doing it, and he found a way to get that ball downfield with the extra time he bought. Fran’s still the Man!

Back In The Day

Kapp was a beast. There’s a story of how in the 1968 season the Vikes were getting clobbered by the Rams and Kapp (who was a backup then) was sent in to get some reps. The Rams had their legendary “Fearsome Foursome” front line and the first thing Joe did when he crouched behind center Mick Tinglehoff was shout out “Hey Lamar”! (Rams defensive lineman Lamar Lundy) “F*** YOU”! Nice way to introduce yourself..LOL

You’re right Fran the Man lasted 20 years without hardly an injury (I believe he was hurt slightly toward the end of his career). I love watching those old highlights of him scrambling around back and forth until finally throwing a touchdown pass…proving if you can stay on your feet long enough, anybody can get open. A defensive lineman trying to chase him down with little success one time growled to the offensive blocker “Let me go! He’s gone”! to which the Viking replied, “Nope, He’ll be back”! Those were the days.

Most of the draft pundits...

Think he’ll be an H-back type of player. Of course, that’s all just speculation, so take it for what you will. Usually those guys have at least somewhat of an idea of how NFL general managers think, so yeah.

He strikes me as a guy who’s one of the best college quarterbacks to play the game, but will be just mediocre in the NFL. Just my opinion, and his worth ethic is insane, so I could be way off, but it’s just my initial thoughts on him.

Tebow

Perfect example of why a good college qb doesn’t always transfer to being a good nfl QB. I guess anything is possible but I don’t see him being a successful nfl QB. He hasn’t spent his time at florida developing the needed skills to a high enough level.

by BeardedAxe on Jan 9, 2009 8:28 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He should come out this year

While the “Wildcat” offense is still in style. He’d be a great change-of-pace QB in the right situation, and I really think he could work in the NFL…in the right system. I would envision using him in red zone/goal line situations, similar to how he was used his Freshman year at Florida. I don’t think he’ll ever be the classic drop-back NFL QB, but as the Vikings proved this year, you don’t even need a QB to make the playoffs. ZING!

by ericj69 on Jan 9, 2009 10:05 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

definatly not

u cant draft a QB based off of what hes like off the field.. then we’d be drafting a punter from god knows where for saving a cat in a tree…. hes got to have the skills.. which Tebow does not.. if u watch all of his throws… there is no power on them.. u dont see a single flat 20 yard ass.. they are all lofted.. and we know what happens with lofted passes

by hickenizgriz on Jan 9, 2009 11:50 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, I have a hard time imagining a “flat 20 yard ass” too. If that ass is twenty yards, it’s gonna be flabby as hell.

Character is quite important when drafting somebody who you expect to be the leader of your team. Just ask Atlanta. So, I totally disagree with you hicken. I don’t disagree with you on Tebow’s on-field passing though. He is not a good pure passer and I don’t see much of a future for him in the NFL.

But to totally discredit the character of a guy…. come on mannnn.

i am not

ripping on his off-field… if it was based on that.. he would be no doubt the first pick in the draft and then mccoy with a close second.. and u know what i meant by his 20 yard passes.. how he has to loft it so much…

definitely

He certainly does leave the ball hangin

Tebow

Bring him on board as our third draft pick!

by LAviking on Jan 9, 2009 4:42 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah

I agree that he really might not have the necessary skills and might not be able to make it. But because of that work ethic he could be worth taking the chance.

Comments like this...

are an example of why I don’t see the Vikings drafting any QB. It basically breaks down to “maybe he will, maybe he won’t, why not?” Don’t we have 2 QBs like that on the roster right now in Jackson and Booty? Why take another one and have 3 QBs that you aren’t more than 50-50 on? Why take on another developmental player that will take up a needed roster spot while he sits on the sideline for a couple years? If Freotte leaves, they will go get another vet, whether it is by trade or grabbing someone they like off the UFA list and unless one of the top QBs has a fall on draft day, don’t expect the Vikings to pick up another QB in the draft until next year.

by vikingfuture8816 on Jan 9, 2009 7:14 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, I don’t see the reason to draft Tebow. We have Booty, and we have Jackson. Frerotte is going to be released, I have no doubt about that. It leaves the ability to trade for or sign a vet QB who gets released this coming off season. We don’t need 4 QBs on the roster.

by Frost on Jan 9, 2009 10:28 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think that

it is always a risk when drafting a QB. No matter where you draft them, they could be great, or they could be a bust. Basically, I’m saying that I don’t think we have the answer right now in Jackson or Booty…. so why not take a chance on someone? Because really, you’re always taking a chance unless you trade or sign for a proven QB.

As a Packer fan,

nothing would make me happier than Tebow wearing a Vikings jersey. Tim Tebow is the J.J. Redick of football; a player who has a niche in college that has enormous success, but doesn’t translate in the pros because he lacks important fundamentals of the position. In Tebow’s case, “complete inability to create his own shot” can be replaced with “complete inability to effectively throw a football” in the pros.

Imagine a competition between Tim Tebow and Tavaris Jackson. Just for a second. And then try not to think about how all the talent on the rest of the roster is being wasted. The Adrian Peterson-Barry Sanders comparisons would be endless.

Normally...

I would completely agree with you. I see Tebow as an insanely good college guy, and just an average at best pro QB. Maybe he did like Florida had him do his freshman year; split time with another guy for certain situations.

However, the kid seems to have a crazy work ethic that makes me think that maybe, just maybe in a few years he could be okay.

Do I want him for the Vikings? No, not really. But I did have that thought before. If we had an established quarterback, then I’d be game. At this juncture, however, I’m not willing to try that.

Not NFL QB

I live in Florida and have watched Tebow for 2 years…great young man, football player and leader on and off the field-no question. Not your proto-type NFL QB and not the right fit for the Vikes system. How many run first QB’s last in the NFL? Not many as they just get creamed at this level. I say develop Booty, cut TJack and trade for a top notch QB like a Carson Palmer, Donovan McNabb. No more drafting QB’s…spend some money like we did with Jared Allen and order up a SB.

by dougvikes on Jan 10, 2009 2:33 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Don't know about his style

Half of Tebow’s game is a qb keeper. he would obviously not be allowed to do this as a franchise qb. No team could take that risk with all the money that gets tied up in these guys. If you take that away from the guy, what happends?

But it’s still awesome. I’ll be revisiting it.
