Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

Coach Brad Childress reiterated Sunday that chemistry between Favre and his receivers remains "a work in progress," but I think most observers would agree we’ve seen a scary acceleration in the past few weeks.

Bingo. Favre's yards-per-attempt average has spiked since the first two games of the season, revealing a quickly developing comfort with his receivers. Now, five weeks into the season, the trio of Harvin, Rice and Berrian is responsible for over 60% of Brett's 837 passing yards on the year.

The Kick-A Passing Game is emerging...

yards-per-attempt is only going to get better for Favre, especially if the O-line keeps protecting him.

Hopefully this pass attack will open things up for Peterson, he needs a breakout game soon!

lol @ Jared Allen

“We think we’re a good football team,” Allen said. “The worst we can finish now is 5-11.”

hold on a second....

I don’t even like to joke about that kind of stuff. I’m a stereotypical “worst-case-scenario-fearing” Minnesotan.

I’ll joke about that kind of thing, after we win the Super Bowl.

Scary

What keeps jumping out at me about this game is, Wow, they really scored that many points??? This team isn’t hitting on all cylinders yet as we’re only seeing flashes of what it could be. When everybody gets on the same page I have a feeling we’re going to see a scoring explosion. Teams are still selling out to stop AP. Sooner or later they’re going to realize that the team has a passing attack too and that’s when 28 is going to break loose.

I think they held back

Way back. They could have easily racked up 2 TDs a quarter, and they chose not to. I think that Chilly finally thinks Favre is ready, otherwise he’d’ve had Favre continue the entire game as ‘live practice’. It’s still a work in progress, but the basic connection is in place, it can only get better :)

Now if we can just figure out what’s happening to shut down AP, where even mediocre teams put a full stop to his running game….

well, I wonder...

start of the year and AP was finding holes… but the defense was finding them too and making their way to our QB…
Now… our QB has more time and we are finding fewer holes.

related?

I BELIEVE...

Maybe it's an O-line tactic?

The more I think about it, the more I realize that I don’t understand all the intricacies of the offensive line. I know that the O-line has it’s own tactics and strategies that it uses, that it does it’s own coordination during the play itself, they have their own ‘formations’.

You could be right, AZ, maybe this is the price of not seeing BF bounced on his tail… but then, you have to think that the line can switch it’s tactics between run blocking and pass protection, as needed. I don’t know the answer…

Good Point DC

It does make one wonder if Chilly is still holding his cards until the team gets into the tough part of the schedule…

Next game @ Mall of America Field at H.H. H. Metrodome

Time for somebody to update the website. I know I am being nitpicky, but this is important. Zigi is getting more and more connected to Minnesotans. Maybe someday it will be Mall of America Field at Pillsbury Domeboy on Farve Avenue or something like that. Or maybe @ 3M Stadium on Post-it Street. At least the old met is still connected in a small way.

Looking at the stats at NFL.com....

After 5 games, the Vikings are leading the league in points (156), touchdowns (19), and turnovers (+8).

Turnovers

are no accident. Boller saw Kevin Williams coming in hard and tried hurry his throw….ended up pissin down his leg…..no accident.

Depends...

would have taken care of Boller’s weak bladder and made it less noticeable…

Favre's Assessment

Maybe he was just blowing smoke, but… it’s nice smoke :)

"Physically and from a talent level," Favre said, "this is the best team I’ve ever been on. I’ve said this from Day 1. … To me, how our chemistry continues to come together is the most important thing. That goes from play calling to who runs this route better and what play-action comes from one play to the next. Just kind of getting into what you hear [called] ‘The Zone,’ if you will."

For a guy who’s been on 19 NFL teams (assuming each year is a different team with different players, different make up, different strengths and weaknesses), that bodes very well for us. It’s just a matter of getting everything to gel together now, and that seems to be coming along nicely.

I Believe Him

Just look at how many years he carried Green Bay on his back making them appear to be a better team than they were.

Talk about talent "Was it Devine intervention on the trade for Wade to Lewis??

Saw Bobby Wade today make some great catches for Chiefs. I havent seen his stats yet but I know they are using him relentless….could it be that Lewis was designed for that play in the endzone for a win against the 49ers…to keep our win streak alive……………just like David Tyree making the one hand grab pinning it agianst the top of his helmet for the Giants to keep the game alive in the waning moments of the superbowl XLII… his one moment of complete bliss…….We must be finding the right ingredient …stirring the pot and season to taste……yummmy

Trying not to get too excited yet

The Vikings did what they needed to do against a bad team. They dictated the way the game went and came away with a decisive victory. The next three weeks will say a lot about how good this team is. They need to shore up their short pass defense and find out how to get AP loose. Everything else looks great right now. Good win.

Yes. Three weeks from today we will know if this is the real deal or not

Hopefully.

 I say if we go:

3-0, then first round bye here we come?

2-1, then we still have the “real deal.” 2-1 means we take out either Steelers or Packers at home (or both). Either of those wins will be a statement — and I am assuming Packers have both Clifton and Tauscher.

1-2, then we’re still in good shape, but may not be favorites obvious for postseason.

0-3, then .. well, we sill see what this team is made of, what kind of character it has.

This is going to be an exciting month of football!

by puddnhead on Oct 12, 2009 9:16 AM CDT up reply actions

im thinking we are going into the bye 8-0!

baltimore is suspect to the pass, Pittsburgh has superbowl hangover and almost lost to detroit, and the packers, need i say more than that?

Vikings 4 the superbowl

Agreed

3-0 we start looking at the final regular season game against the Giants as meaningful and for home field. (By the way, we all need to keep on eye Saints v. Giants this week—big game).

2-1—depends on who we lose to. If we lose in Pitt then we are still alright.

1-2—pretty disappointing. Based on last game with Green Bay, we are a better team and should win and you need to take care of your home games.

0-3—start to fear that we are pretenders rather than elite and the Bears suddenly look scary. Can’t have 0-3 or then what is being said about the early season “easy” schedule looks more true.

You are right—should be exciting for the next three Sundays.

Fair assessment, this stretch is going to be the real opportunity for the Vikings to prove themselves (or not). I’d guess that we fans aren’t the only ones wondering about it.
