Vikings New Stadium... in LA?!
Same story, different day...
On 5 eyewitness news, about 13 minutes ago, they had a report on the vikings possible move to LA. They began by describing a new stadium plan that is being put into 'GO' mode in LA. Its huge. Its really really really nice! They said they're building it, and the Vikes are one of a couple of teams targeted for the new stadium. The report went on by saying the lease is up in 2011, we are too far in debt for a new stadium, and a couple of 'tax payers' or Joe Shmoes, said they would not pay more taxes far a new stadium. It was enough info to piss me off and post this!
?!?!?! WHY, would that ever EVER happen?! The Vikes have to be maybe the 5th team to be considered to move! HEY, how about the Jaguars?! Their games are supposedly blacked out because of the lack of tickets sold. The Raider's famous owner, Al Davis, just annouced recently that the WHOLE team is up for grabs. He said "We're taking any offers, anyone is available, except for the real young talent." and The Rams could use a jump start, why not a new stadium?!?! The Bills have one of oldest, if not THE oldest stadium in the league.
So, in conclusion, I really don't feel that we should live in fear about this. I strongly believe Ziggy will get it done here, especially if we win the big game this year!
So who will it be? Who will call this new palace of a stadium home?!

-----------PLEASE RESPOND-----------
Would you be in favor of a "fan tax" in order to support the building of a new Viking’s stadium? If it were somehow possible to quantify who was and wasn’t a fan (who watches games and who doesn’t), would you as a fan be willing to spend, say, $10/year to assure the Vikings dont move to California?
(This is completely hypothetical. It has never been proposed by any of the parties involved. It is merely just a way to gage how serious we as fans really are about building the stadium. Please be honest with your answers, as if answering yes actually meant an agreement on your part.)
(In case you’re curious how I arrived at the tax dollar amount. Its a rough estimate:
- 5,200,000 residents in Minnesota
- 60% of the TVs on Sundays are tuned into Vikings games
- 60% of 5,200,000 = 3,120,000 + 60,000 (in the dome) = 3,180,000
- 3,180,000 x $10/year x 20 years = $636,000,000
- enough to get the Wilf’s to build the stadium without a cent being charged to those who don’t want it)
(Appologies, as this is also posted in another related blog, but I just really want a lot of feedback on this proposal.)

I would pay plenty to have the Vikings stay.
That said, most of the talking heads feel the Jaguars are the most at risk to move.

i would pay
10 a month to see the Vikes stay, and I live in montana. The plan Ziggy has makes that area compete with the M.O.A. does nothing but improve that area and this is from my memorey of 20 years ago.I lived in Minny during the Walker trade and back in 96 hated the downtown area lived in St .Louis park,Hopkins,Minnetonka area while there.Loved what Minny had to offer except those long traffic jams, with those stupids lights on the on ramp.
If minny aint willing to pony up,then someone will, will hate to see that happen but I will root for them no matter where they go,just will take me a bit get used to a new name, same team.

Its going to be difficult to keep them.
I posted on this topic earlier but you have to be realistic about the finances. The stadium plus the annual operating loss of the stadium total approximately $50,000,000 per year for the next 30 years. I don’t live in Minnesota but I would be willing to pay. Sell me a seat license which allows me control over my seat ($12,500) and an annual assesment of $350. This pays the entire $750.000.000 plus the operating deficit.
Oh the Vikes won’t do that because they want the revenue from selling seat license. Just like every other NFL team. The league says they pay $20,000,000 per year to keep the Vikings in Minnesota in the current stadium. I don’t believe it and even if its true that’s less than 1 million per team. Does the league care? Does Ziggy care about Minnesota. We will soon know.

Only one issue
As for the Jaguars having games blacked out, the Bill having the oldest stadium, or the fiasco that is the Raiders, there is only one statistic the league cares about—revenue.
And the Vikings are dead last in revenue.
We were blackmailed into paying for a deadbeat team like the Twins, that can’t be bothered to even sign their own stars like Hunter or Santana, to have a new stadium. And now we don’t have the money for the Vikings who actually put a quality product on the field.
It just sucks.

Twins vs. Vikings
I’ve said it when the Twins were begging for their stadium and I’ll repeat it again not that the Vikings want theirs. The Vikings organization deserves a stadium far more than do the Twins. I love baseball almost as much as I love football, but its pretty clear who the better managed team is. The Wilfs put the Pollads to shame. And it is a shame we choose to support the wrong team. How the heck did that happen? Are we really that ignorant?
by Jayrome007 on Oct 16, 2009 10:09 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
True, but there is a big difference between the Pohlads and Zygi.
Zygi hasn’t owned the team since 1984, the Pohlads have.
Not to mention the fact that the Twins have two world championships under their belt and they play 80+ games in the stadium spanning 8 months of the year. That brings in MUCH, MUCH more revenue over the course of a year than Football where we only have 8-10 home games.
Also there is the fact that the Metrodome is a terrible baseball stadium, with the seats not even facing the action, but it is still functional as a football stadium.
Put all those together, and you can see why lawmakers chose to give the Twins a stadium rather than the Vikings.
A bummer, yes. But it makes sense.

Keep taxing the Smokers and Drinkers!!!
Smokers are addicted, so no matter how much they bitch, there going to buy the tabacco; and liquor, especially liqour taxes, aren’t cheap either, but it doesn’t seem to be a deterrent.
Other options would be to legalize various vices and tax the begibbas out of them…prostitution? …illicit drugs?
Put a casino in the new stadium? Open up a river boat gambling operation?

Tax Coffee, Baby Pablum, and Solar Panels in Minny!
Coffee drinkers are addicted, they’ll poney up, and they’ll bitch and moan about it the most, which is somehow quite pleasing to contemplate :)
Sheesh, enough with the holier-than-thou moralizing by a bunch of amoralists who think they know better than anyone else how other people should live! Slap an automatic-sunsetting tax on everything sold in the state to pay for it, and be done with the problem.

We had better pony up.
The Vikes are in trouble. The people of Minnesota better get with the program if they want to keep the Vikes. L.A. would much rather have the Vikings than the Jags. They already got our Lakers. Purple is big in that town. The Vikings are a business and they have to turn a profit. You wouldn’t want Pillsbury or General Mills to leave town. The Colts were Baltimore. Ask any native when the Ravens won the Superbowl a few years back had that still been the Colts the Celebration would have been bigger and with even more pride. Its just not the same. Once something is gone you don’t get it back. I live in Iowa and I would have no problem paying $10 a year, year after year to watch the Vikes. Maybe thats what we need. The whole region will be affected if the Vikes move.
N.D. S.D. Iowa, Neb, even Montana. Lots of Vikes fans in those states.
by iowaron on Oct 16, 2009 10:20 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Why haven't the vikes simply asked
for fan donations? You know, sign up as a vikes fan for $10 a year for 20 years and get monthly email updates on team events…etc. etc. and help keep the vikings in MN with a new stadium. You have to believe that you could get at least 1M fans from MN and the neighboring states (ND, SD, IA, Montana and Nebraska). That’s 200M. If the stadium is 1B, and wilf said they would pay 1/3 (333.33M). I would guess you could probably get 2M to sign up to the Vikes Fan account, for approx 400M, plus wilfs 333.33M leaves us with a total of 733.33M needing the state to fund 266.67M.
Assuming that the players salaries average about 100M per season. The MN tax rate is 7.85% leading to an annual tax income amount of 7.85M per year, or 157M over 20 Years on the players alone. That leaves about 100M. So the question is (with a couple of assumptions), is that a worthwile deal for the state of MN?

I still say that the “Mall of America Field” sponsorship is the first step in building a business relationship that will ultimately end with a new football stadium being built adjacent to the Mall of America.
They have been trying to expand the MoA for years, with plans in the running since around 2000. But since the economy has stalled, they haven’t been able to follow through.
So there is this huge empty area next to the MoA that is about the right size for a stadium to be built.
There is already parking, the light rail is already there and it is next to the airport and the freeway. It is one of the most logical places to put it, and will increase traffic to the MoA along with giving them a venue to host large concerts and whatnot if MoA wants to do so.
Imagine the money they would get from the “indoor tailgaters”.

How much do you figure
the MOA would spend on naming rights for the new stadium. MOA Field at Mall of America doesn’t sound so bad.
by TheEvilProfessor on Oct 16, 2009 1:19 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It would go farther than simply the naming rights.
Since it would be connected with MoA, they would have access to the stadium for the other 6 months of the year that the Vikes are not playing. Plus, they would have a business agreement with the Vikings, players and cheerleaders which means more traffic for MoA even when there are no games at the time.
The bars and restaurants in MoA would get a huge boost, as well as the stores. There could even be a bar or two that has plate glass windows allowing for a view of the game from the Ultra nose-bleed section.
by Bjorno on Oct 16, 2009 2:57 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
That would be worth some serious
coin from MOA. I think it is definitely worth getting looked at. This would add a lot more value to the MOA than more stores would.

Not To Mention
That from a nostalgic standpoint it would be almost on the same site as the old Metropolitan Stadium… (yeah, I know THAT won’t generate one dime of revenue but it needed to be said)…

The governor stated he wanted to keep the Viked in Minnesota
He said it about two weeks ago. Now does this mean we’ll keep em? No idea. But at least someone up in the chain of command is looking at keeping the team. Losing teh lakers’ north stars… Just a terrible feeling. Losing the Vikes then realizing you want them back… Even worse…

Well
considering Pawlenty told them to pound sand, shifted about 2 billion in debt from the budget to this upcoming biannaul period and he will be leaving office, his comments are purely for political purposes. IF he wanted to get something done, he would have made those comments over a year ago.

Pawlenty is the biggest obstacle
Pawlenty is in this coast to presential nomination mode. He’s focusing purely on issues that are nation wide while ignoring the specific problems our state faces. Everything he is doing right now is to serve his personal ambitious goals.
Unfortunately after he is gone it will be too late. We need to get this thing going grass roots style.
It makes sense. There are plenty of fans. Checking the TV ratings proves that we are interested in football. If we lose the team we’ll be paying double in half a decade to get a new one. Our politicians are so short sighted.

Is that the real drawing?
because the stadium in that picture doesn’t look like the $1billion dollar stadium that we’re supposed to build!
If a team has to move, it should be the Jags. They can’t fill the seats, and they have no real NFL History anyway. Plus I think the Jags will be firing Jack DelRio after this season too.
Next would be the Raiders. Al Davis has the whole team up for sale anyway, plus it’s just easier for them to move. Not to mention, they’re from LA anyway, so they’ll fit right in..lol.

for the record
when it comes to stadiums, I can’t stand the low grade slope where at the back you feel like you are a mile away and ten feet up. I would rather feel like I am on top of the field and have the stadium more vertical. IMO it makes for a much superior game viewing experience. That LA stadium looks way to spreadout.

The Future Southern California Home of...
two existing NFL franchises, one playing in it every week of the NFL regular season.
Q. Why are the Vikings a choice target? A. They are the most talented and competitively successful team which is potentially available due to financial problems in their current location. That is a large part of what is takes to successfully prime the fan base in the new location. (Only an idiot like Limbaugh would want to buy the Rams.)
Q. How will developer Ed Roski get money to buy part ownership in these existing teams? A: He’ll sell off his casino interests, which is something he must do anyway to participate in NFL ownership under existing NFL policy. Ed has taken a big hit in his portfolio, as many investors have in this recession, but Forbes still ranked him as the 236th richest person in the United States in 2009. (His petty cash would look to most like a retirement fund.)
Q. Aren’t their some legal issues holding up the start of the California stadium? A. Not any more.
Q. Why does the planned Minnesota Dome 2.0 have a roof, but the stadium for City of Industry California not have one? NFL football guarantees only a minimum of eight days use of a stadium per season per team. To support the cost of the building, something else needs to be found to make profitable use of the building in some of the 357 other days of the year. In City of Industry, California, it rarely rains in summer and does not snow in winter. The annual average temperature there is 77 degrees. In Minnesota, those things are definitely not true! Imagine booking a U-2 concert or a Final Four series and finding it has to be postponed or cancelled due to weather. Big problem? Yes. You can only make so much on soggy monster truck shows.
Q. Why does Elgar feel the Vikings are headed west? A. People I talk to say the same stuff people I talked to in Cleveland in the mid-90’s said before the Browns shipped out to become the World Champion Baltimore Ravens. The situations are quite similar. The major league baseball team is moving to its own new stadium. The people say the economy is bad and the football team will just have to wait. The successes of the second nearest NFL franchise weakens the fan base in the home locale. The people say they pay too much in taxes (and hope Ben Franklin was also wrong about death being inevitable). The fans think they own the home team because it is currently playing in their city (even though you continually point out to them that the Rams or the Lakers are playing in other cities now). Art Modell was an advertizing tycoon in Cleveland before he bought the Browns. His name was on plaques as a major donor to health clinics and public projects. People told me he back then he was bluffing about moving. “He’s got too much invested in Cleveland to leave.” Obviously, those people with whom I spoke were proved totally wrong, but they were just as sure of themselves as the many people in Minnesota I talk to nowadays. Not enough of them will wake up until it is well past too late. Then, all the shock and awe and lawsuits and moaning epithets will be just as effective at keeping the franchise in Minnesota as the ones in Cleveland were back then. People think tomorrow will be just like yesterday. That makes it a self-fulfilling curse that it won’t be. Everyone is too busy texting to see that oncoming eighteen wheeler. Yes, you living in Minnesota will be helping out a billionaire: the billionaire will just be 2000 miles away, and his state will be the one to benefit from all the taxes, transportation fares, restaurant traffic, and hotel room money generated from NFL games.

Another California Pipe Dream
Since the Rams and Raiders left L.A., there has been a new stadium proposal every other year, and yet nothing happens. You think things look bad economically in MN or even here in New Mexico? See what is going on in Cali. There is no way the people there are going to go for it. They are to passive with a “so what” attitude about the NFL. I really dont see it. It will come down to the final minute, perhaps as a barganing chip, but I seriously see the Vikes staying here with a new stadium.
