Comment-turned-FanPost For DN Staff/Commenters
I originally posted this as a comment on Antony21's "From Minnesota To Industry?" post, but I wanted to repost it here so that it could get more exposure. After all, it's an important question for you guys, and I'm extremely interested in what you think. Enjoy.
Let me preface this by saying that I want the Vikings to stay where they are. I like hating them, it’s nice and convenient. Additionally, I doubt that the NFL will try to force itself onto Los Angeles, where the prospects for establishing a vibrant fanbase are lukewarm at best. So I don’t want the team to move and I don’t feel like it will move; that’s where I’m coming from.
If the team does move, will you still follow them? Will Gonzo, ericj69, and anthony21 still write about them? Does the Daily Norseman become the Daily (insert new mascot-related noun here)man? Or will you break it off and start following a new team?
By the way, try to not respond with anything along the lines of "The team's not moving anyway, so it's a moot point" or "Go away, Packer jerk". The former is because I want to know about your feelings on the hypothetical, no matter how unlikely. The latter is because I'm fragile.
This FanPost was created by a registered user of The Daily Norseman, and does not necessarily reflect the views of the staff of the site. However, since this is a community, that view is no less important.

The amount of betrayal I would feel would be off the charts.
I’d probably lose my taste for football entirely. If for some reason I kept my interest, I’d root for the Steelers or the Eags. (Born in Philly, college in Pittsburgh) If either of those teams would be playing the former Minnesota Vikings, I’d root for a beatdown the likes of Shanahan vs Al Davis.
When you go to somebody's house, you don't crap on their floor. Being a fan of one team does NOT give you license to be a dick to fans of another.
Corollary: When people are visiting your house and behaving themselves, them being a fan of a different team is NOT a reason for you to piss in their beer.

The team's not moving anyway, so it's a moot point. Go away, Packer jerk
Sorry, I had to. I am incapable of being submissive and obedient to a Packer fan. :)
But seriously, I would still follow them but I would have to take a cold-hard look at the other teams in the NFL and see if I could bring myself to being as in love with them as I am with the Vikings. Right now though, I don’t think it is possible, so I would probably end up sticking with them wherever they went.

Move out of Minnesota = No longer follow the team
The Vikings are pure Minnesotan, plain and simple. If they move out, I would no longer follow the team.
Would I still be a football fan? Probably. I’d just watch casually and not really follow any particular team I imagine.
I just hope, in the unlikely event the team moves, that the Vikings change their name/mascot. I don’t want the LA Lakers and Vikings, where both of their team names make no sense whatsoever, given their locale.

Agreed
Can’t call them the Vikings if they leave the area. How much sense would it make for the Vikes to play in a warm climate? I definitely wouldn’t follow the team anymore – which would save me about $350 in Sunday ticket / Superfan subscriptions.

Vikings in LA?
That’s like hockey in Dallas. I don’t think I could be a fan of that…..

I stopped following hockey after that.
Although I’ve been living in western NY for the past couple of years and I’m tempted to start following the Buffalo Sabres.

Being Minnesota born and current Los Angeles resident, I would probably follow them if they moved, but no way near as closely as I do now. They would still have the same roster of guys that I have been cheering for and believe in, but moving them would leave a bitter taste, even more so if they kept the name and colors. I am a big football fanatic and would still follow the league, but wouldn’t have the same passion.
Since it hasn’t happened yet, its hard to say any of this concretely, but definitely where I stand today. Maybe you should ask some older Colts or Browns fans to see how they felt when their teams moved away, before getting their newer teams (Ravens and Browns part II respectfully). I am pretty sure those moves happened for reason similar to why so many think the Vikings may be prime candidates for reloaction.

I might stop watching football altogether
Or I might become a Lions fan. Since they’ve never really been competition in my lifetime I have no bad feelings toward them and no one could call me a bandwagon jumper.

i don't think i would watch
football any more. i couldn’t stand the sight of my ex-team dating it’s new fans. It broke my heart and just seeing it have a good time on a fall sunday with it’s newfound love would eat me up inside. I would start smoking again, start eating to excess, gain weight, let myself go, and probably become a recluse. or i’d follow the redskins with my father in law and slowly try and poison myself to ease the pain.

well...
How would you feel if the Packers were on the list?
I can’t fathom the team moving, but I think it’s likely too, given the economic pressure on the team.
I also find it hard to believe that Minneapolis/Minnesota wants to get stuck with a big ol’ empty stadium either.
I may still be a fan if the name/logo/colors move (Las Vegas Vikings, anyone?), but it would NEVER be the same.
Ick. I don’t want to have to think about it.
I BELIEVE...

that's pretty lame,
your beloved packers couldn’t get it done on the field,
so you had to resort to this ?
a kick to the groin, followed by a hug.
Mitchell, with all the problems the packers have right now,
your efforts might be better spent on cleaning up your own house.
and stop worrying about ours.
keep stirring the pot, Nov 1st is just around the corner.
pretty sure that Brett’s got that one marked on his to do list

Hey, now.
No pot-stirring here. I’m legitimately interested in what you guys think about the possible relocation of your team. I’ve never experienced a team relocation before (the only one I’ve been really able to follow was the Seattle Sonics move), and I at least feel something about the Vikings.
Just because I don’t like your team doesn’t mean I can’t concern myself with them, does it?

I've actually been surprised by some of the answers by your fellow Vikes fans
some would swear off of football, some would follow the team, and some would pick a new one. If it came off as some sort of trash talk, then I apologize for the misinterpretation. But there’s no punches here, above or below the belt.

I, for one, think the "Los Angeles Vikings" would be appropriate...
75% of mascots in professional sports are either completely unfitting for the region or downright arbitrary anyway. Can any one person tell me what a Brown, a Charger, a Flyer, a Thrasher, a Blue Jacket, a Red, a Sock (with color options), or a Dodger is suppose to be? And the Utah Jazz – Do they even allow music in that state?
Some teams seem to go for the intimidation factor when choosing a mascot. The Giants sound pretty fierce (so fierce that we needed two Giants teams). I’m sure ferociousness was the only thing on Tennessee’s mind when they chose the Titans (although some nifty alliteration may have had something to do with it).
Very few teams fall into the Vikings class of “region appropriate” mascots: the Packers (ugh), the Yankees, the Rockies, the Steelers, the Twins, and the Celtics to name a few. Others leave me clueless – like the Nets (what kind of net? A fishing net? A basketball net? And what what does a Net have to do with New Jersey? And why is your mascot a fox, for that matter??).
Also, you’d have the same chances of seeing a Viking in L.A. as you would seeing a Panther in Carolina (although it is a heavily-wooded area), a Chief in Kansas City (after the 1700’s), a Saint in New Orleans, or a good team in St. Louis anytime soon.
With all that said, I’d rather watch a WNBA preseason game than see the Vikings anywhere but Minnesota!

Just because it's been done doesn't mean it was ever a good idea.
First of all, the Chiefs are not actually named after the Native American tribe leaders, despite the arrowhead logo and the name of their stadium. (Scroll down to the middle of the paragraph from 1963, and there will be something about KC’s mayor at the time.)
You’re correct that some mascot names are chosen for relevance to the sport and/or alliteration (New Jersey Nets, Jacksonville Jaguars) or for perceived toughness (Carolina Panthers) which is equally prevalent in college (KSU Wildcats).
Other region specific mascots: Baltimore Ravens (home of Edgar Allen Poe), Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, Houston Oilers, Seattle Seahawks, 49ers, Browns (named for their original owner, Paul Brown) and I think the Colts mascot makes more sense in Indy anyway (horsepower). Colorado is home to many ranches and rodeos, so the Broncos fit nicely there. Washington DC made all of those horrible anti-Native laws and relocations and so forth, so their NFL team has blood red jerseys…the only thing appropriate about that particular team name and colors. The Saints refer to the old classic, “When the Saints Go Marching In.” Really, the vast majority of NFL teams are named well.
Others mirrored the names of currently or previously existing sports franchises: the Chicago Bears (from the Cubs), Detroit Lions (from the Tigers, with Ford colors), NY Giants (from the former baseball team which moved to SF), St. Louis Cardinals (there are still Cardinals in AZ), and even the NY Jets (mirroring “Bronx City Bombers” and having a great deal of airport traffic, too). The Raiders are a fitting moniker because of their owner.
That leaves only a few that can’t really be explained: the San Diego Chargers, Cincinnati Bengals, and the StL Rams (which made more sense in LA, but that is not their place of origin)…and the Falcons, whose name was suggested by a teacher:
“The falcon is proud and dignified, with great courage and fight. It never drops prey. It is deadly and has a great sporting tradition.”
Admittedly, it’s better than the Atlanta Brown Thrashers (the state bird).
Also…
A Brooklyn Street Car Dodger was one who bravely walked across the busy streets of NYC. Before they had a subway, ALL traffic was in the streets, especially the cable cars. The Dodger Blue was too popular to let go and LA probably had similar traffic cable car/pedestrian/auto/cab/trucking traffic, but it definitely belonged in NYC.
The Jazz were originally from New Orleans, the home of, you know, dixieland jazz like When the Saints….and Utah should never have kept that mascot, especially when they put their mountains on the unis.

Al Davis
The Raiders are a fitting moniker because of their owner.
No, I think the Oakland Vampires might be more appropriate in that case. Or if they moved back to LA they could be the LA Lugosies—that would be awesome. They could play classic Ed Wood clips on the JumboTron to fire up the crowd.

Funny…this is what they decided to name the Atlanta hockey team. Which also answers the OP’s question of what a thrasher is.

Few Choices in the Midwest
Picking a team is usually a “which team is local” kind of decision. In the Midwest you have Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota to choose from. I believe most Viking fans are localized to Minnesota, Iowa and the Dakotas since they are fans of smaller cities and have a bitter rivalry with Green Bay. As much as I love the Vikes it just doesn’t sit well to root for any L.A. team.

I'm not sure exactly
My first thought is that no way could i ever root for the LA Vikings. Then i think back to when i first heard rumors of Favre wanting to be a Viking and it turned my stomach! Cant say that anymore!

I would still have the Chiefs
…which is about the same as not following real NFL football.
If the Vikings move, then I think that the fans should pressure them to do 2 things:
1) Keep the team colors in Minnesota, unlike the LA Lakers.
2) The relocated franchise must never refer to this great franchise’s history as its own, including throwback jersey days, which should be money green with purple numbers and letters and a glossy black helmet to symbolize the vacuous nature of any ownership which would be dumb enough to leave a loyal fan base such as this one for a city that has way too much glittery stuff going on to bother with the blue-collar NFL.

That's another thing I've been kicking around
The “best” idea I’ve come up with is that the Vikings would join the NFC West (lucky you) and would be replaced by the Rams (lucky us). It might seem like wishful thinking, but I can’t think of another NFC team that is in the same geographical region as the rest of the division and in the same conference and could give up it’s spot if the Vikes move west.

Ballroom Dancing
I would have to start doing competitive ballroom dancing!!!!! If the Vikings emasculate me like that I would have no other choice!!!!! I realize that they will only ever be good enough to break my heart but…hope is what keeps me watching.
Truth be told
I would not be able to bring myself to cheer for any other team than the MINNESOTA Vikings. If they move I will not even watch Pro football again. I would poor all my energy into college football—-I am a fan of college now but somewhat passively.
OK….. even thinking this way has made me start searching for ballroom shoes!!!! I am not sure my manhood will survive!!

It would be real, real tough for me.
I live in Minneapolis, and I used to live less than a mile from the Dome. I usually only go to two or three games a year, but if they moved to LA, I really doubt that I could write about them with the same passion. The North Stars were instantly dead to me as soon as they moved to Dallas; I love the Vikes exponentially more, but I don’t know if I could deal with them leaving.

I was a lifelong Seattle Supersonics fan and when they moved to OK I completely lost interest in the NBA and if this happened to my beloved Vikings same thing. I probably would devote all my time to college football and other college sports, since they don’t move.

I'm a Vikings Fan
I hate the thought of them ever leaving Minny, but if they do, as long as they’re still the ‘Vikings’ (that is, the L.A. Vikings or the Virginia Vikings :) ), I’ll still be a Vikings fan.
If they ever stop being the Vikings, NFL football will cease having much meaning for me and I’ll probably start watching more CFL. I will, however, STILL be a Vikings fan, even though the Vikings no longer exist. I’ll still wear the Purple and Gold, I’ll still sport my Tark original style jersey. I’ll be a fan of a team that no longer exists… so be it.
