Rank the top 5 teams
ESPN has their power rankings out. No bickering about how over-rated PRs are - they are still a fun way to see how your team is ranked against the others. By the way... the NFC North is ranked as the strongest division in ESPNs calculations, I guess they are recognizing what we already know!
OK... so I've given you a few choices below. Pick one of the choices or select 'Other' and give your argument.

Colts, Saints, Vikings/Giants (tie), Pats (& dark horse, a healthy Philly)

And, just to preempt the inevitable criticism—yes, I believe you can give a higher power-ranking to a team that’s been beaten by a lower-ranked team. I believe that NE is still pulling things together, and that they are a stronger team than Denver on any given Sunday, especially if they can stay healthy into the playoffs.

lose to Raiders
Dear Anthony Carter, Eagles are temporary disqualifed due to loss to the Raiders. Get back in a couple of months with a win steak and we can reinstate them. They just hit their low point for the season so it has to get better. Knocking off the Giants and Cowboys should make them feel better I hope they do cause it will make me feel better too.

Pretty funny, and right on. Yeah, their loss to Oak is an enormous embarrassment. But, wasn’t it like this last year, too? They started the season looking simply awful then ended up being dominant heading into the playoffs. I guess this is why I keep them around as a dark horse. But, you’re right, as far as power rankings go, they probably don’t deserve mentioning within the top six teams.

Completely agree
Giants fell far and fast with their loss to the Saints, Vikes could keep rising but they need to show the consistancy of New Orleans to top them. New England looks tough beating on the kids in the playground but it will be interesting to see what happens to them when they play a real team…

Vikings No1
“we have not seen the viking play thier best game and they’re 6-0 that’s scary” Trent Dilfer
Guys we have not play our best. have any one of you seen us play 4Qrt of footballoffense and defense yet. That why we are the best. We have not seen the best of Favre yet. So for all of the people who rate the Vikes 2nd. Please watch the game again.

I would argue
that playing a full four quarters is what makes a team ‘best’ until we master this we are not the best.

+1
I keep reading people saying we haven’t played our “best” or a “complete” game yet. But, six weeks in I think we have to go with the evidence of what a complete game actually looks like for us. High highs and low lows. At what point do we acknowledge that we’re consistently inconsistent? Of course, we know what this team can do when they’re “on.” But, many teams can say this. Our break downs against SF and Baltimore leave me still wondering how sure we stand among the elite 3/4 NFL teams.

Exactly
It worries me a lot. Our D used to be one of the toughest in the NFL and I’m not realyl sure what happened to it. And I swear to God I will hire Chuck Norris if Chilly doesn’t realize he can play call a whole 60 minutes like he does the first 15
by Grime on Oct 20, 2009 3:58 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wait a minute!
I think ups and downs are included in every team’s repertoire.
Has a perfect/complete game ever been played?
Wins are the measuring stick… the team must do what it has to do in order to win.
That starts with a game plan, execution, and then taking advantage of your opponents weaknesses or mistakes.

That is why we have more potential
they have reach their’s. I have faith we will put it all together. with in the next game we will get their. This Raven came at a good time. JA said we have to fix it. That mean we are not reading our own press clipping. I guaranty we will beat Pitt. When we win that mean we have turn the corner.

One thing I would add to this discussion is that Winfield’s absence has (IMO) everything to do with our breakdown, which was largely in the secondary. Through the fourth quarter we were still getting a lot of pressure on the QB, but making Paymah our cover QB and brining in backup at the nickel position made us very weak. Johnson is still coming along, but remains mistake prone, like his glaring open field miscalculation on Rice’s untouched late TD run. This isn’t all about “putting together a complete game.” It may also come down to, “can this defense stop teams without Winfield?”
by Anthony Carter on Oct 21, 2009 9:12 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not having Winfield scares me as well
We’ll need to see some serious work going on this week if we want our DB’s to be able to stand up to Ben. If we don’t it could be a LOOONG game. As we play catchup every time we get the ball. I have two prayers right now. One that Winfield isn’t that badly injured and can come back at least by the Green Bay game. Two Asher Allen is much better than I think he is. No knock on the kid, but I remember my first college game. Was a lot different than High School. I can’t imagine how different it would be if I were trying to play in the NFL.

well it was either them or the Giants and I think the Giants are overrated.

The Giants were overrated when they were in the top 3. But I’d still take them over the Falcons for the top 5. That defense can still be scary, they just went up against Drew Brees on a good day.

yeah that I can agree too
but my brother is a Giants fan so I rather hate on them than the Falcons. Your team still made the top 2

What have the Giants done???
When the media discuss these very power rankings, all I’ve heard up until now is how soft the Vikings schedule is and they consider our 6-0 start some what of a fraud. Yes we could have lost week 3 to San Fran but for some late game heroics from Greg Lewis and Brett Favre. We beat the teams we were suppose to (Cleveland, Detroit, St. Louis) and handled Green Bay on Monday night. We won a close one this past weekend against a new found high flying offense and the remnants of a defensive power house in Baltimore.
Let’s throw out the pre-season media hype for the NFC East Division and look at some of the Giants schedule realistically.
W Redskins…they need to start over from the owner down
W Cowboys…the hype is wearing off of Tony Romo and no TO to blame
W Bucs….makes last seasons Lions look like a 16-0 team
W Chiefs…biggest current rebuilding project in the NFL
W Raiders…See Redskins above.
L Saints…(insert Denny Green Rant) They are the frauds we thought they were!!!
The Saint thumped them bad and exposed them as a middle tier team IMO but since every year some NFC East team is placed on a pedestal as the team to beat we see them showing up in one poll ahead of the Vikings and Denver believe it or not.
Sorry about the long post…IMO the top five are:
Saints
Colts
Vikings
Denver
Patriots

Vikes 6-1

Right now the top 5 are: Saints, Colts, Vikings, Broncos and Ravens. I was tempted to put Pitts as #5 now that they have Polamalu back, but I find it unlikely that even the Steelers could come back from being down 30-17 in the 4th quarter alone.
by Frost on Oct 20, 2009 11:21 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Minnesota won’t score 30 on the Steelers. There’s your problem…
by Concomitandt on Oct 21, 2009 5:48 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I dunno man. They’ve put up at least 30 every game so far. It’s a pretty good offense.

I have a bridge to sell you...
If you do not think the Vikes are capable of putting up 30…

Will the Steelers go into the top 5
if they beat the Vikes to go 5-2? we haven’t really beaten a good team yet but we are the defending super bowl champs with a current top 5 rated offense and defense???
i’ve been bumping around your sight all week and have enjoyed it.

It would certainly improve their rankings
Getting that W will be a battle though…Even without Winfield, Vikes have a lot of weapons offense, defense and ST sides….My guess is Big Ben will be focusing on Allen and the rest of secondary for much of the game…and we will get burned a few times for long gainers…
BUT with that ball in the air so much and the pressure from our front four, Ben will also get burned for a couple of game changing INTs….Add in the ST potential we have and AD, and we have a game! No rollover, we do not quit (we do screw up at times, but what team doesn’t – even NO is vulnerable to a brain fart day I think even though they are figuratively walking on water at the moment)…
BTW, Thanks for your compliment on the site (I say this for all of us Viking fans but the real heroes are the monitors/staff Gonzo, Eric69, and Anthony21 ) – to me here feels like a fix of Lake Wobegan (NPR) LOL….a touch of home with the “boys” enabling me to enjoy the NFL/Vikings season a LOT more!
Oh yeah…I am sure there will be a few of us heading over to your site this week as well…Overall, there has been a good exchange on a weekly basis between us and our opponents fans…I for one look forward to more of the same this week…
Lastly – Good luck to you for this game….not TOO much though, may the best team (on Sunday anyway) win, and may no major injuries occur on either side! Still a lot of year left…
SKOL!

1. Saints

3. Vikings-Broncos (tie)
5. Ravens-Patriots-Giants (tie)
Yeah I’m cheating a little, squeezing in two extra. I just had to get Ravens in there though. I still think that if they get their act together, they could dominate again. What I saw last weekend did not change that belief. I just don’t know if they get things together again, that’s all.
Before anyone scoffs at me including a 3-3 team in there, admit it — if the kicker makes that last second FG, how could not have Ravens in the top five? Do you really want to go there in claiming that their kicker missig one kick is what is keeping this team from being considered better?
No, I didn’t think so.

Not top 5.
They are in the top 10 though… tied at 8 in my ranking system with the Packers and Eagles.
Top 5 in my system…

Vikings
Broncos
Patriots and Colts (T-4th)
