Vikings Kick Tires on Cornerbacks
With Antoine Winfield's status for this Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers up in the air at this point, the Vikings have brought in some cornerbacks to potentially sign. It's not a replacement for Winfield, mind you, but more than likely for a spot on the practice squad, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
The three players that the Vikings brought in today were DeAndre Wright, who was selected by the New York Giants in the sixth round of the 2009 draft, Trae Williams, a 2008 fifth-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles that spent last season on the Jaguars' practice squad, and Mark Parson, who spend the pre-season with the Houston Texans after going undrafted out of Ohio University.
According to Sean Jensen, the Vikings are expected to sign Wright to the practice squad in the very near future.
If Winfield is out this Sunday, it's likely that third-round pick Asher Allen would see his first NFL action for the Beloved Purple at the House that Ketchup Built this weekend. Or, at least, one would hope so. . .because if I see Karl Paymah out there playing anything but special teams on Sunday, I'm going to be significantly disappointed.

Safeties
Any chance they look at safeties to sign? Or a new defense playbook that allows Chilly n Co. stop the onslaught of passing offense from our opponents in the 4th qtr. would be much appreciated.

Maybe they should kick the tires on a new Defensive Scheme too?
because I think this one has a hole in it.

Pittsburgh now utilizes a lot of spread offense looks with a vertical-oriented passing game. So it could be all hands on deck Sunday.

Be afraid, be very afraid...
I’m afraid that if the Vikings don’t get their pass protection scheme going and with more than one fired up defensive lineman, we stand to get our clocks cleaned by the Steelers. The Ravens might have lost with our good luck, but I don’t think luck holds you a winning record very long. I saw some talk of trading for another defensive lineman elsewhere, but we need to get it together fast!!!
I watched Denver play San Diego last night and there is a disciplined team that has a good defense that’s taking them somewhere. Time to stop resting on the laurels of last year and get some real Purple People Eater instincts going again!!! SKOL Vikes!

Yeah, it might help things if Ray Edwards
could do something besides jump offside about three times a game. Every team here on out is gonna chip Allen and while Kevin Williams has gotten some push inside the rest of the DL has done little in the way of pressure. I’d like to see Robison get some playing time.
Gotta go against the conventional wisdom here on Paymah. Frankly, his coverage wasn’t all that bad and Flacco simply made some great throws. What really hurt the Vikings though was the abysmal tackling by the secondary resulting in huge YAC by the Ray Rice and other Ravens receivers.

Finally, someone else can see that Payma wasn't the only guy that screwed-up.
The Ravens scored 2 more TD’s after they burned Payma.

And
Tyrell Johnson missed some tackles and has not been in a position to make plays. Need more from him.
by Spartan99 on Oct 22, 2009 10:20 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
And
Tyrell Johnson did make some tackles, too, particularly the one where he kept Rice from making a TD in the 4th quarter.
The collapse wasn’t just one guy… it was across the board on D. And we were blitzing as if that was the only thing we knew how to do, leaving a lot of wide open recievers out there.

Plenty of pain to spread around
Paymah blew at least 3 critical coverages that resulted in huge YAC or TDs, he’s far from blameless.
Edwards may have been off-sides, but look at the first 6 games and you can see that’s not at all the ‘norm’ for him, or the rest of the Vikings this year. In fact, we’ve done a heck of a job at minimizing our penalties, until last Sunday.
I saw Johnson make some plays, and blow some.
Too many plays in that last half of the 4th, the Vikings looked more like a 3 Stooges re-run, everyone missing Rice one after another. Like they were all running half-a-second late, or had greased up their gloves with butter. Either that, or no one was to be seen at all as Rice burst through holes big enough to drive a Mac truck through (Williams Wall, where the hell where you?!?!).
The folks who think the loss of Winfield was the cause of the collapse have forgotten that Winfield dropped out half way through the 2nd quarter, and the Vikings D stopped providing good pass coverage OR good run stoppage at about 8:30 remaining in the 4th quarter (because prior to that, we were handling the Ravens without issue). Winfield had nothing to do with this.
SOMETHING changed. Maybe our guys were too tired, that would explain it… except, the Minnesota offense spent considerably more time on the field than the D, and they weren’t tired.

GOOD
It’s about time, but what will the coaching staff do once they discover that their secondary is only about 1/2 as good as they had hoped and expected it to be?

DeAndre Wright can play both positions S/CB
I think he would be a good pick up if we used him at safety because of his coverage skills. He played here for New Mexico and was a solid player all four years. He does fit the profile for the Tampa Two scheme with his size at corner but I don’t think he has the speed to keep up with speedy WRs.

If I see
Karl Paymah rent in at corner on Sunday I think I will have the big one. Get Asher Allen on the field and let the kid play. I watch this kid in college and in pre-season. Sure he may make some rookie mistakes but give him a chance to play. He is a far better option than Karl “don’t look at the receiver or the ball in coverage” Paymah.

also
karl “i will let the receiver take the inside route”paymah. Heck the kids i coach no you dont let the receiver take the inside route. I DVR the game and only one time he took the inside and force WR to the outside.

In a cover 2 scheme
Youre supposed to force the receiver in to buy the safties time to get over the top. Really the only time you want to force the receiver out is if you are playing man so that you can use the sideline as an extra defender. In cover 2 corners are the underneath squat (flat) defenders. Nothing can get outside of you. But I agree, he shouldnt have let them release untouched, corner’s in cover 2 have to “force” the receiver inside, not “let” him inside.

Ravens barely went after Paymah...
Their game plan was to go after Cedric Griffin, and it worked. He couldn’t cover, couldn’t tackle, couldn’t get off blocks and supporrt the run, and generally couldn’t find his a-hole with a funnel. They continued to do this well after Antoine went down.
If Cedric Griffin doesn’t pull his head out, it won’t matter who we put on the other side this Sunday.

Actually in the 4th quarter they did
32 yard TD to Clayton…Paymah is to the outside and in front of the receiver. Never looked back until the ball was caught.
Rice takes a short pass for 63 yards to set up a touchdown. Paymah is one of 4 Vikes to miss Rice but his effort on the play was the weakest of the 4, just waving at Rice as he ran up field. If he slows Rice even a little Henderson probably makes a tackle.
On Baltimore’s last drive to set up the missed field goal, Flacco went to Paymah’s side at least twice but the passes were out of bounds.
I agree with your statement that the game plan was to go after Griffin, and they did so quite well early on in the game, but during the bulk of the 4th quarter melt down Flacco realized where the weakness was and exploited it.
by boomy44 on Oct 21, 2009 11:45 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Only part of the weakness
They ran almost at will on us during the same period. Paymah made it clear that he has no business being a 1st string corner, but he wasn’t the only problem.
The Ravens didn’t beat us. The Ravens didn’t even come close to beating us.
It was the Vikings who almost beat themselves.

you must not watch the game. i dvr it and he make me sick. i thought they should release him in the pre season

I agree
I have been a Griffin fan as I have seen him play well often. However the game at the Dome versus the Ravens had me yelling at my 52" Plasma. I don’t know if high definition made it that much more obvious but the guy could not get off a single block. It was so frustrating watching their wide receivers drive him backwards down the field clearing a path for the ball carrier. He needs to get off his block either to the right and force them back into the defensive help or get off block left and force the receiver and ball carrier out of bounds. He really looked bad on Sunday. (Again, this coming from a fan of his)

Winfield is the one player we can't afford to be without for very long.
He helps so much against the run AND pass, and we’re dangerously thin at CB as evidenced by last week’s 4th quarter meltdown. Hopefully Asher Allen can come in and make a difference, but I’m not holding my breath. I see Hines Ward & Co. having a big game on Sunday.

It didn’t matter who they went after, the DB got outplayed especially late in the game. I don’t know if it’s scheme or player but they just didn’t have an answer.
And even before Winfield got hurt—like in the Green Bay game—we couldn’t do much to slow down the downfield comeback attempt late in the game. We’ve got to do something about this propensity to give up huge passing yardage or we’re in trouble in upcoming games against passers in Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Chicago twice, Arizona, Cincinnati, and the Giants.
Frazier needs to figure something out I think.

So much Doom and Gloom
Goodness gracious. The Vikings weren’t that lucky to win the game. They were up big late. Ravens were lucky to have that many big plays and get back into it after they sat and got spanked for the first 3 quarters.
They will gameplan around not having Winfield out there and the secondary will look better. They’ll also have another warm body in there. Problem is that their game plan is likely to open up holes elsewhere in run defense and over the middle.
We could still have a saving grace. Heinz field has a tendency to be a slop hole this time of year and that can neutralize a lot of the talent. Unfortunately it also gives the home team advantage in experience playing on that surface.
In any case we’re 6-0 for a reason. We’ve been in every game. The boys in purple might go out and surprise you on Sunday. Pittsburgh has been beatable this season.

Now is the time for all good players to...
Everything is a work in progress. Even the good teams must get better every week or they won’t be the good teams any longer.
Although the to-do list is full of key open items, (to paraphrase Twain) rumors of the Vikings’ defeat are greatly exaggerated.
Things are not going unnoticed, as was exemplified by the fact the head coach ran onto the field and shouted things.
If players are getting tired, they need to work on conditioning during the week. If they don’t understand their assignments, they need to pay more attention in practice.
All defenses are vulnerable. Each new opponent requires a somewhat different approach. All the pieces need to be executed as assigned or holes open up, whatever scheme you are attempting.
In any war, the initial plan usually goes out the window rather quickly. If you don’t think the Vikings were in a war, you clearly weren’t listening to Ray Lewis last Sunday.

Steelers not that great.
if bears can take steelers vikings should too,as i recall in preseason when we played steelers ben was getting sacked from right to left and funble the balls.steelers has trouble with our frontline defense.

The Steelers kicker missed 2-FG's in that loss to the Bears.
But I still think the Vikings can beat the Steelers this week.

Absolutely.
I agree, the vikes can beat the steelers and the steelers can beat the vikes. I really believe this is an equal match. Regardless of who wins, its possible we see each other in the superbowl(ignoring crazy injuries to AP, Ben, TP, Favre etc.)

just so steelers fans are aware
Yes your defense is extremely tough with a healthy Polamalu. I was talking with a guy who had an MCL injury and he mentioned that it took him a long time to get his acceleration back, which is exactly what makes Polamalu able to cover so much space (his instincts help too). It will take him a couple more weeks to be completely back. So just brace yourself.

The Vikings should...
The Vikings should start early like the Ravens game…and never lowered there intensity…they were too confident entering the 4th quarter…and that hurt us…plus the 5th grade tackling from our linebackers and our secondary…we can’t lower intensity against any team and specially against a team like the defending champions…Vikings stay undefeated after this week!!
