Around SBN: Can Tebow Say No To Anything?

Dang. Antoine Winfield's still in a walking boot, so seeing much of him in practice seems like a long shot. Access Vikings draws the logical conclusion: Count him out for Sunday. Sean Jensen adds that there isn't much optimism in the locker room about Winfield's status. Of course, no official word has been given yet, but everything is pointing toward him missing this game.

Well...

I guess the Vikings Offense is going to have to win the game. I’m not super confident in a win, yet Favre and Peterson may pull it off, let’s hope so!

Ben still put up great numbers against their secondary.

detroits secondary is much worse and they almost tied the game

I was responding to this, which does not make any sense, because Detroit’s secondary did not almost tie up the game, their O did. Ben tore up their secondary.

Our secondary just is no where near the same without high-flying Polamalu.

I'll re-write his statement as I understand it then...

He is stating that Detroit’s secondary is worse than Minnesota’s and yet they stayed competitive with the Steelers – and almost tied the score at one point.

Are you saying that Detroit would not have been that close with Pola in?

We’ve had lots of ‘good numbers’ put up against our D this year and we are 6-0…

That is exactly what I am saying

Take your best player off your defense. Do you think you win all 6 of those games in the exact fashion? Probably not.

Troy Polamalu allows LeBeau to take extreme risks with Troy in the game because he can cover so much ground with an instinct unmatched by any SS in the league.

Look at the Titans game, when he was 100% healthy. 6 tackles, 2 pass deflections, a tackle for a loss, and a god-like pick in 1 quarter of work. He makes our defense a lot better.

Your Bears game, Our Ravens game...

DB difference makers out for ~1/2 of the game.
We found a way to win… you lost to the Bears.

We may feel it this week if Winfield doesn’t play…
But the D Coordinator, knowing his playmaker is out, should replan/restack the game calling.

We still think our D is better than Detroit’s or Chicago’s without Winfield and we match up well with the Steeler’s. This will be a good game and a good test for both teams.

Troy was out the entire game against the Bears…so the comparison does not really make sense.

If Troy was in, that last drive does not happen, and we win the game.

Not to add, Tone had a wrist injury in that game and dropped around 4 passes.

ahhh

I see. well, my point was that polamalu would have made a difference at that point. in fact, i realy do believe he’s what ketp close games away from other teams.

he’s a bit rusty. at least he was in the bronws game. he had an int but also allowed a TD that he wouldnt have allowed otherwise. he turned the wrong way…i rarely see that. it was a play action but he should have known to turn the other way without turning around. first game jitters…he’ll be good come vikings unless his knee injury flares up…i really hope not.

if polamalu has a weekness its biting the play action at the endzone and allowing a TD as a result. its rare…but it happened against the colts 08.

Sit Now Play Healthy Later

I would rather him sit now even if it costs us against Pittsburgh. We need him much more through the last half of the season and for the run to the SB than right now.

Hopefully he’s ready for Green Bay, but even if he misses the next two and comes back after the bye…I’ll take that over possibly losing #26 for the rest of the season! His value is not worth rushing him to play. Besides, maybe putting some of these young guys in the fire now will be beneficial late in the year.

Same thing happened to us when we lost Troy

We’d rather sit him now to have him for later in the year.

It might suck now, but you will definitely appreciate it in the long run.

Sit em all

Here’s a silly thought. We are most likely going to lose this game. We know it. The analysts know it. The players and coaches probably know it.
But looking forward to the rest of our schedule this is really the hardest test of the whole year. We have a very realistic chance of losing this game and still going like 12-4. That being said, would it be totally insane to just take the loss and sit a bunch of starters? Think about it. Like I said, there isn’t much hope in trying anyways. And doing so greatly increases the odds of injuring another starter or two. Pittsburgh has a deadly defense and they could potentially tear Favre or Peterson in half. So why risk it? Take the loss cause one loss is no big deal and save our starters for the Green Bay game.
Eh? Anybody out there see my point?

I'm only a fan, just like you

All I want are enough wins to get to the Super Bowl (and one more win in the Super Bowl would be nice). Plain and simple. If I was a player, my sentiment would probably be different. But I’m not a player and I’m not pretending to be one. And I’m also not living vicariously through the players. I’m just a fan and I would assume most all fans (of any team, in any sport) can agree that success is only measured by getting to and performing well in the playoffs. Not one silly little game in the middle of the season. As such, I don’t wish to jeapordize any more players in a game (I feel) we will probably lose anyways. Seems logical to me. But then again I am only a 14 year old girl. My neural centers of logic are far from developed.

But regardless… I want ‘my’ team to go out and beat their opponent every week.
No games are ‘silly’. Once the regular season is decided, home field advantage wrapped up…
then and only then, would I consider letting our foot off the gas for 1 game…

Every team is beatable – there are really no games ‘we will probably lose’… that’s a ‘losing’ attitude to have and I reject it. We have a good team, maybe great. This week is a good test… on the road, against the defending World Champions, with most of the nation watching…

I had mentioned elsewhere on the site after the game Sunday the likelihood/necessity of activating Allen, as well as exploring bringing in some new blood…Appears Vikes are doing both….Long term is OK….

Passing yards given up (secondary) has been an area of concern for me this year in our games and as the stats bear out….Also time now to get deeper in this position…is still early in the year…

Allen and whoever else we can get that is decent will have time to play/peak prior to playoffs when it will REALLY count….Not having Winfield may turn out long term to be a blessing…Just trying to put the best face on this…

I am sure the D is seriously thinking about this latest bit of news even more than we are….I am confident though that they will reconstitute and execute! SKOL!

He still makes plays under pressure, especially when we need them. Not to add the line is ten fold better this year. Anyway, the majority of Ben’s sacks this year have come from him holding onto the ball to extend the play and not because of OL breakdown.

Yes think they may be a bit motivated (understatement?) to sack Big Ben a few times, and hurry his behind EVERY play – through the end of the 4th QTR too!

This will certainly be a test…oh yes, why not away, against Steelers, and outdoor stadium to boot…make this a REAL test!

Shoot maybe…I smell 2 INT for us, as well as one fumble recovery, and – as much as I hate to say, maybe one INT for Steelers…Running game? AD will get over 100 yards again too…

Farvre’s outstanding TD/INT ratio is sooooo good to now….no issue (hopefully) if we have to eat an INT (obviously I would be MUCH happier if one did not happen)…w AD and CT we will more than compensate….

I'm a MN Pessimist

but I think that despite the announcers who gushed over how Allen plays the run and rushes the QB, he really doesn’t. Running underneath him is almost always a great option and with the Steelers seemingly promoting their better RB (Mendenhall) this could spell trouble for our D if we settle into nickle/dime packages too often (unless Sapp & Allen start tackling like Winfield).

I dont mind the trash talking….it makes up for a boring day. I dont see 100 yards from one player. maybe both AP and backup add up to 100+…but i doubt it.

Also, we should have more sacks but most of the guys we play are mobile. how mobile is favre? can he move a lot? dunno.

by surag238 on Oct 21, 2009 4:09 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Sure there will be some sacks for Steelers....

(1) Not sure it will be a game changer though for the Steelers…

Personally I like the fact that Favre is willing to go down or get taken down rather than gun slinging as his reputation has been….I have not seen much of that attitude/play to date…He is playing smart football into his strengths and those around him, and compensating for his age/old bones (I can relate LOL, no spring chicken here either, smart to work smart!)…

(2) On running game, you are predicting a total of 100 yds for AD and CT/Harvin together….

Hmmmmmm….If that happens, will be a field day for Favrin (Favre to Harvon), Rice (again), and Shank Redemption Show…Can’t have one without affecting the other…do you stop our run or stop #4 and crew….I refer to this as our poison…

Our poison comes from many directions this year….remember last year when we did not have a QB that could close a game, or comeback if required to get that W? We have that ability this year, and it has boosted the entire team to a new level…

NOTE: As with every team, we DO still have “issues” to address…Being done on a week to week basis and as we go/grow, will only make us a more solid team…The W last Sunday was a wake up call (Could easily have been an L for us)…and the Vikings will be VERY focused….

im sure they will be focused, lol…its an away game against the most hostile crowd in the nfl(outside of domes) against the superbowl winners. i can honestly say that every team including the lions have brought their A game against us this year. sadly we havnt. maybe we’ll peak late(good thing).

anyway, the thing is that with polamalu back we can do things we normally cant. and it goes long ways. people think TP is just another player. he’s not. people think, well a good D can do well or just as well w/o just one player. we can’t. Our entire D was designed around TP. not because we need him and only him to succeed, but because with him it transcends our defense above all others(see last year, and I dont mean that to be an ass…)

what TP does is allow timmons to blitz instead of cover. what TP does is allow farrior to function in the middle less and blitz more. What TP does is allow corners to blitz more. What TP does is allow the outside linebackers stunt inside instead of covering the edge. It goes on. He’ll be a big difference if he plays at his top level. thats a big if. even if he plays he may play less than 100%. A less than 100% TP is not TP. less than 100% and he’s a regular pro bowler. TP is God to the STeelers. you can see why we were so upset when he went down. It was like when michael jackson died. All of Pittsburgh stopped.

In any case, I did say that it was a big iff that over 100 would be had. I really believe you guys get max 70 yards. maybe a huge gain on one play and then small stuff and thats it.
I’m more worried about favre shredding our #2 corner. wait our #3 corner. yea thats it. those to guys need help. who knows, maybe we’ll be fine in our secondary.

I really do think our offense will take you to task. Our tight end is the best in the business. second best if you believe in stats(pshhaww who follows stats anyway???) . From what I understand vikes have issues at covering tight ends. thats good news for us. it does two things: makes it easier for us to pass to our tight end for easy first downs and helps negate a fast pass rush by allen and co. it also forces more coverage by lbs and safeties on him. may open for the big play.

my biggest worry is becoming too onesided and not being able to run at all. this is very possible. our Oline has real issues with 4-3 teams. I’m not sure we can handle the front 4 yet. As well, I’m concerned about turn overs. Steelers are at the bottom on turn over differential. we’ve given up the ball 14 times this year. or is it 16?

I’m more concerned about stupid special teams returns. how good are your return men? anything like the broncos?

he's got great hair, too...

We do make TE’s look good – but we did keep Heap from killing us for most of the game last week.
Improvement? maybe.

Todd Heap is only good in name. he’s overrated. still a threat as a Touchdown maker but thast only because of his matchup size. i mean he’s a big guy going against tiny corners mostly. but in reality he’s overrated at this point. he doesnt have the blocking skills of the better players and the pass catching skills are wanting-he’s slower, weaker technique etc.

Heap and Miller are at two differnet levels, my rankings…

1Gates
2Gonzalez
3Clark
4Witten
5Miller.

Heap is probably below the top 10.

Return Men

Please turn back now if you really like sleeping at night.

The bad news for Steelers fans is that the Vikings return men are all very good. The good news is that two of them (Harvin and Renaud) are both dinged up. This leaves you to worry about Jaymar Johnson (from whom one should not take an eye for one split second), Asher Allen (whom no one has seen as yet in the NFL since the Vikes are so deep in returners), and Bernard Berrian, whom I assure you the Arizona Cardinals were not too fond of seeing do this punt return in the desert last season:

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXihw_bNHFo

In other words, I even suspect the VIkings have been slacking off on punt returns because they want Favre on the field to give the defense a wind and gatorade break.

Quite frankly I think there are a ton of good return men in the NFL and a few great ones (Cribbs and Hester a few years ago). Most good returns are more a function of great blocking and that is why the Vikings are so much better this year than in previous years, they’re better coached and not drawing illegal block in the back/holding calls.

Better 1000% over last year

STs were a fiasco week in and week out last year seemed….

This year has actually been a pleasure to watch them in action…on kickoffs and punt returns, we have been getting decent or more than decent field positions, while when we have punted field positions have ended up deep for opponents much of the time…

The players mentioned already are threats for sure….and Harvin if he breaks is always a threat to go….all….the….way….Longest was what 103 yards think (maybe 101, not sure)…

I understand now why TP is so important to the Steelers, thx for that in depth explanation….Hope he is at 80 to 90 % for you by Sunday….sounds like that is enough for us LOL….

I would rather be IN the Arena than watching from the stands...That is my life!

well thats the thing…most people just dont realize how the steelers defense plays. its designed around dick lebeau. he likes to do crazy blitzes that require elite players. hence why we gave up so many picks for TP in the draft. People think steelers have a mediocre secondary beacuse of the ‘dropoff’ when TP got injured. thing is, its the entire SCHEME that hat to be rejiggered as a result of his loss. so we had corners and coverage players doing things they normall dont, picking up areas they normally dont. its not that they cant play this wya…its just that they dont practice for it.

for example, Ike taylor is easily a top 5(at worst top 10) corner. thing is, he likes to play soft and covers the deep end. the steelers also play hybrid cover 2 for the most part beacuse of their blitz scheme(something tomlin brought in). So the flats and the middle are usually exposed if not for TP. when he’s out, its easier to pass in the middle because Ike and the other safety have to respect the deep pass.

you will almost never see a deep pass against the steelers be succesful. the only times I see it happen are when its a short pass for a long run(colts 08) or a stupid and uncalled for pass interference penalty-browns/chargers games. Its irritating but true.

This way, the steelers allow the dink and dunknig that takes place so often against them. with TP in its almost impossible to consistenttly get it done when there’s a confusing blitz taking place-my most memorable blitz was the first superbowl when TP lined up at NOSE TACKLE…talk about genius

Team Game

maybe a smarter GM would manage his team around all the players. Any player on the field is one play from ending his season or even his career. This is why the Vikings have three quarterbacks. Granted one is probably better than the other two, yet #2 and #3 might surprise if given the opportunity.

by BigSkyViking on Oct 22, 2009 1:44 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

probably? I didn’t want B.F. to come to MN, but there is no doubt at all that he is much much better than TJax or Rosencopter.

Favre in Purple

Ditto…I hated Favre..but I have been converted. I think he was mistreated in Green Bay and wanted to get away from TT for years. I hated Randy Moss in 95 too. He smoked my Montana Grizzlies like a piece of Alaskan Salmon. But I was sure glad we drafted him. He got a punk attitude and I was glad to see him go, regardless of his talent. Point is Favre could get hurt. His odds of missing time are pretty slim. AD was very close to getting his leg broke last week. He ended up with what sounds like a mild sprain, but that was a near freak play that could end someones career. Could happen to Favre or it could happen to Rogers or Cutler. Who do they have for a 2nd stringer?

by BigSkyViking on Oct 22, 2009 11:27 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

opps

Moss smoked us in 96…we won the championship in 95 at Marshall…they added Moss and smoked us with two guys named Chad Pennington and Randy Moss.

yea we have a dumb GM

you’re right…I mean, I’d rather not have two superbowls with a ‘smarter’ GM..hell I’d rather not have made 6 AFC championship appearnces in the past 12 years as opposed to how many by the vikings?

I think you put your foot in the mouth there….smarter GM? lol. Because you guys historically draft excellent QBs too right? Ohhh tarvaris jackson. where are’t thou?

Why don't you count how many Viking QBs

and Coordinators have gone on to do very well somewhere else, and get back to me.

by BigSkyViking on Oct 22, 2009 11:48 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

why dont you count how many superbowls you have

and then get back to me on that…last I checked thats the only thing that matters for a GM

Steelers: 1974, 1975, 1978, 1979, 2005, 2008-superbowl wins.

interesting.

oh and the scheming for defense falls under the hands of the defensive coordinator not the GM…and I’ll take Dick Lebeau over anyone…ever.

and thanks for giving us Mike Tomlin ;)

well...i hope to see u guys at hte superbowl

everytime we go to the superbowl people claim we play ‘lesser tier’ teams…first the seahawks then the cardinals. I disagree, but whatever. at least if we play the vikings or the saints(and we go to the superbowl) then we wont have to deal with that nonsense…both are elite teams this year.

your getting started…PAST ownership let alot of great QB’s and Coaches move on…again I emphasis….PAST OWNERSHIP….it takes time to right a sinking ship and that is exactly what Zigi will do.

surag someone alluded to it, but that Tomlin guys sure seems okay.

for the Farve to Rice interior post then. I swear that thing is good for 20 yards every time.

Ike Taylor will see about that. He is a lot better than those terrible CBs for Baltimore.
