A Peek Behind the Steel Curtain

I'll occasionally visit a Vikings opponents' SBNation page to get a feel for a fan base's fanaticism.  I've been impressed by some and bored by others.  I just sneeked a peek Behind the Steel Curtain (the SB Steelers page) and found an interesting post.  Apparently the crew over there makes weekly score predictions.  In more than forty comments, some more creative than others and most predicting a relatively close score, only one commentor picked the Vikings to win the game.

Check out a sample below and make a prediction yourself.  Go ahead, be a Homer, they are.

Steelers 23, Favres 19

I think the Steelers run game goes to crap this week. Leaving the passing game the only choice. Lots of failed drives become field goals for Drunk Reed.

And the Favres will get some momentum and get a couple TD’s but in the end run out of gas.

I’m also seeing a safety for them. The score I picture is like 2 tds, 1 fg, 1 safety.

24-23 Vikings win.

Turnovers plague the Steelers, pedestrian performance from our offense.
Defense wins big… although, I could see Reed missing a game winner as time expires.
Just to keep that whole ‘overrated’ vibe going.

they got torched last week and they’ll be looking to kill something this weekend.

31 - 24 Viking W

Other highlights I can “see”:

- Two INT for Vikings, - One INT for Steelers, - 3 sacks on Big Ben, - 2 sacks on Brett… - Good field position throughout for Vikings to start from, less so for Steelers… NOTE: mitigated somewhat by Steeler D,

- Lots of plays using the machine(s) Farvin, Shank Redemption, Berrian, and Farvrice (most yardage offensively for the Vikes… - AD gets his 100+ yards on two runs that result in long gains, positioning for Farve and crew… - AD gets 2 TDs to add to his season total…. - Favre throws 2 TD to Shiancoe and Rice… - Big Ben is hurried all day, still is effective passing, 3 TD passes, still gets an L at the end of the game - TP has a fair day, not at 100%, shows in the D…. - Multi-talented Vikings come out of the shadows with this game, and NO/Viking become the “flavor of the week” for NFC face-off…

Bottom Line: Should be a better game than last week’s….Thrills and chills for sure, but Vikes turn it up….with or without Winfield….Look out Steelers, be very scared, hide the women, because here come the VIKINGS!!!!!

I will probably feel stupid after you answer this, but I can’t seem to figure out who the “TP” you refer to is. I’ve gone through all the major players for each team in my head and none fit the profile. I just know I’m gonna kick myself when you tell me.

Viking 27 Steelers 24

Our scoring will be down as we run AP more heavily than in past weeks and he proves that Yea,verily even the Steel Curtain is can be gouged by a good run game. The D regains some pride but without Winfield Big Ben moves up and down the field with accumulating 300 yards and 2 TD before coming up short on the final drive.

Steelers 31, Vikings 27

With Winfield (probably) out, AD and PH dinged, TP back in, and the game in Pittsburgh, plus the smart move for the big picture being we need to rest the hurt guys for the 11/1 game … I might as well be the one that repays the favor of the guy over there who called us to win. Plus, we’re due for a lucky break to go against us for once.

Just to clarify, this is the first time I’ve predicted we’d lose a specific game this season (last week I said I was nervous about Ravens, but still predicted we’d win). So I’m not trying to be a Debbie Downer or something. I’m just thinking we are due to lose sometime (every team since 72 has), and this week is not only looking like a real possibility, but it actually would be the least painful loss to endure, it being AFC and all. I wrote two weeks ago that I only expected us to 2-1 through the Ravens-Steelers-Packers stretch, with the Steelers being the most likely loss, and … here we are.

by puddnhead on Oct 23, 2009 8:53 AM CDT reply actions

Vikings 34, Steelers 31 in OT

I’m worried about the secondary with Winfield hurt, and probably out for the game. Can Benny Sapp step up and perform well enough? Will Asher Allen be a solid nickle or dime back this game?

Taking a middle of the road assumption on secondary performance, the game is too close to call. Vikings have too many offensive tools to be stopped from one or two offensive injuries and will put up some points. Favre can play TPs agressiveness against him most of the time. On the other side, Rothlisburger is not the guy we want to go against with a struggling secondary. So I think it will be a high scoring game. So close I’m predicting overtime. I called in Vikings, but this one could easily go either way.

31-13 Steelers

The Vikes will come down to earth aka Heinz Field and they will play their worst game of the year, the Steelers crowd will take them out of the game and Ben will continue to lead the NFL in passing yards. No way AP will run on our defense and James Harrison is going to be in Favre’s face all day. If WInfield plays, the outcome could be much closer but he is your guy on defense kind of like Troy is to us.

by WARDANE33 on Oct 23, 2009 2:23 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think your ever ready

for a let down, other wise it really wouldn’t be a let down because it would be expected. I highly doubt we get creamed though I don’t think your defense is that good.

by Grime on Oct 23, 2009 2:30 PM CDT up reply actions

It's not?

Ranked #3 when our biggest play-maker missed 4, basically 5 games. I’d love to hear your reason why you don’t think its that good…

We have one of the best line-backing crews in the NFL, the best Strong Safety in the league coupled with a very good FS, a shut-down 6-2 corner who runs a 4.3, a top 5 NT, and good DEs, oh and one of, if not the best, DC in the history of the NFL.

I’d love to hear your reasons why it’s not that good. You might think Wardane33’s prediction is crazy, but this comment is just as bad.

we were only #1 overall last year in winning our 6th SUPER BOWL and we have really went down hill this year as we rank only 3rd overall. WE SUCK

Vikings – 59
Steelers – 0

by WARDANE33 on Oct 23, 2009 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Hmmmmmm...

Do not think will be that close (KIDDING!!!!!!!)…May be a high scoring game though….here’s why:

(1) Just as your defense will be tested this week against what is forming into a marquee offense (reminds me of ‘69, some years in the 70’s, or ’98)…both a running and air attack (AD and multi-tandems of Farvin, Shank Redemption, Farvrice, and Berrian)…

(2) Our defense will be tested by Big Ben (regarding our weakened secondary) throwing mainly, after running with limited success for a few plays…He will have success, and we Viking fans will be groaning and griping as he moves the ball…

So we have two highly effective QBs going at it…slinging away…

Result: I think there may well be MORE offense than the two defenses would normally allow (well except the Vikings 4th qtrs anyway)…May turn into a Manning/Brady like throwing contest….

Should really be a great game….

I think the Ravens game was close enough to a let down to give our players that ego-check that is needed on a team playing like we are.

I was hoping for a loss to either the Ravens or the Steelers just to keep us in check, but that game against Baltimore was good enough to do the trick.

by Bjorno on Oct 24, 2009 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions

kick return went for 6 - our D was stout as usual

Harvin scares me, the Steelers haven’t been the best at covering Kicks and Percy can really go. I remember watching the draft and when you guys got him (late imo) i thought that was a great pick at that point in the draft.

All these blow out predictions crack me up

Considering in their last 42 games (2007, 2008, 2009) the Steelers have only lost by more than 7 points twice I don’t see that happening. Call me crazy, but I think it’s going to be a very close game.

I see a lot of blow out predictions for the Steelers

I’d almost think this is close to a slam dunk based on the talk over in your neck of the woods. Lots of people also see our offense as pretty impotent or perhaps they think your defense is awesome.

by Salty on Oct 23, 2009 12:12 PM CDT up reply actions

There are some bias people at BTSC, for sure. I just don’t see this being a blow out either way.

Our defense is good. Awesome? It was last year, but since then its lost a CB, DE, and an LB. It still shuts down the run and is ranked in the top 5 even though it has been missing its biggest play-maker for the majority of the season.

Anyone who thinks your O is bad has never watched AP run or doesn’t know who Favre is.

This game is going to be close, and probably one of the better games this year. I am almost more excited for this game than I was the season opener.

That said, this game will be a tale of two field conditions.

Considering my recent check of the weather in ‘spurg, there really hasn’t been the rain that they were expecting so I am hoping for good field conditions. If that is the case, I expect a shootout and a 100+ yard performance from AP and a 400+ Yard performance from Big Ben.

But they won’t count it as 400 yards in the stat book because 140 of those yards are going to be interceptions returned for TD’s :)

Vikes 30 Steelers 27 in overtime.

by Bjorno on Oct 24, 2009 1:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I still don’t see AP getting 100 yards. And Ben will not throw that many picks as bad as your secondary is hurting.

I find it interesting

That the previous six games we’ve had people from the other fan site come over and field questions for us. It’s interesting that no one from the Steelers is doing this.

Personally I hope we win. I’m going to watch this at a Steelers bar with my Jared Allen jersey on and during half time I’m going to hit on their women.

I played at a D3 school, and before we got turf my junior year, we had a practice field that went from lush and green to dirt/concrete after a week or two. It was awful on our knees and anytime anyone went to the ground. Turf is the way to go, seriously.

We feel it makes Heinz field unique and harder to play at. Don’t expect it to change unless the NFL makes a rule forcing us to change it.
