A trip down memory lane
seeing the hall of fame thread and knowing that this week we play some former Vikes
Got me thinking about a former non HOF favorite RB.
That RB is Leroy Hoard. You cant help but to like the guy. He was a true workhorse, nothing flashy,
just did what was asked( short yardage). He did have a time when he was asked to carry the brunt of the load for us and did a great job.
I found an old article about him ironically dated this weekend in I believe 98 or 99 enjoy!!!

NICE!!
You need 1 yard I will get you 3. You need 5 yards I will get you 3. I loved Leroy Hoard and was actually just on EBAY yesterday hoping to FINALLY find a Vikings Hoard Jersey.

I had to go look up that quote.
Did he really say that? That’s one of the great quotes of all time.

I was a big fan as well, we could use a guy like that to complement AP.

No knock on Chester, but he is simply not that type of player.

thats true
but Chester Taylor will unfortunately be elsewhere in the nest season he is just too good for us to hold him back any longer, maybe then we will get a more hefty runner.
I would have a signature... but it could cause a schism on this site

thanks!
thanks for the link! that was nice. even moe got in on the action. that was the game that turned that season around. i think we ended up going 10-6 that year and made the playoffs. it was disappointing after 98 tho.

Complimentary
Hoard was such a good running back for the Vikings passing offense. I think we really underused him. There is something to be said for consistency in a running back.
When you had the deep passing threats the Vikings had in those days more Leroy Hoard would have put us in a lot more 3rd and short vs. 3rd and long positions and would have given our beleaguered defense more time to rest with more clock control on the offensive side of the ball.
Robert Smith was a monster his last year and a half with us, after he came back from his hernia surgery, but prior to that I would have liked to have seen Hoard carrying the rock a lot more often.
By the way, his “I’ll get you 3 yards” comment was great as it showed that he understood his role on the team, but it always bothered me since he was quite capable of breaking off long runs as well. And if you’ve got a back that can get you 3 yards or more every time I think you’d have to be insane not to use him. Not that anyone would ever question the sanity of Denny “They are who we thought they were” Green.

Nothing to do with Hoard, but another reminder of yesteryear
An 80-yard TD to Matthew Hatchette on FIRST DOWN to give the Vikings the lead!
We may never see such bold playcalling that actually provides the element of surprise like that again. I also like that example because it’s the not-so-special Hatchette instead of Randy Moss.
