Ask a Steelers fan

Someone mentioned that there was not a post for you guys to ask questions of a Steelers fan, so I decided to make one.  I hope I know enough to answer your questions, but if not, hopefully some of more knowledgeable guys from BTSC can come over and celar it up.

As I mentioned earlier this week, I am disappointed to see Antoine Winfield as doubtful for Sunday, because I prefer to play a team at full strength.  However, the Steelers recently lost a big run stopper in Aaron Smith for the year, so I don't have that much sympathy.  I expect a very close, plausibly high-scoring, physical game of football this Sunday.  Grab a beer and kick back, it's going to be a good one.

Ask away...

This FanPost was created by a registered user of The Daily Norseman, and does not necessarily reflect the views of the staff of the site. However, since this is a community, that view is no less important.

Currently Milwaukee's Best

Plays QB for us. He wears number 4. You might have heard of him. He’s the guy with a higher QB rating then Big Ben? (5 points, I know its meaningless, just playing)

A few months ago

I created a fan post here predicting a Steelers/Vikings Super Bowl. I was told by many here that I have the mental capacity of Terry Bradshaw. What do you guys have to say about it now?

Even though I am a fan of both teams, I am a Steeler first, and a Viking second. As much as it pains me to root against my deceased step dad’s team, I must, for the BLACK & gold. I got your back, Johnny.

Question for Steelers fans

Does Rothlishotdog ever turn the ball over? Every time I watch a steelers game there are defenders all over him, but he doesnt seem loose the football. He holds onto the ball longer than Daunte Cullpepper looking for Troy Williamson to get open, but he rarely fumbles right?

In order for the Vikings to have a chance at winning this game they will have to force Big Ben to cough up the ball. The vikes d line vs Ben could be the matchup of the game. Even if the get to him they must get him on the ground and make him put the ball on the ground.

Talk to me about Pitts OL and Ben’s ability to protect the football.

by Spartan99 on Oct 23, 2009 1:35 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Ben does turn the ball over, a bit too much for our liking sometimes. This year his passing has been insanely accurate, completing over 70% of his passes, but when he is off it can be bad. He has thrown six picks this year, two which were taken for 6. He has tried to force it a couple more times and easily could have around 10 picks this year.

As far as fumbles go, last year he had the most fumbles and most fumbles lost for QBs. This was due to a few things: the Oline was bad last year and this was made worse because Ben likes to hold onto the ball and extend plays. However, the biggest improvement/surprise this year, has been the drastic improvement of our O-line. It is essentially the same group, but is playing way, way, way better. It is vastly improved this year and BB has only put it on the ground 3 times, losing 1. I am definitely looking forward to seeing how the OL it does against Allen and co.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he fumbled it twice this Sunday with your great D line.

I've got a few for you

Has Polomalu fully recovered for this week?

Do you think Willie Parker’s lack of production is because of him or personnel preferences?

And for college football

When is Penn St. gonna have the chutzpah to show up and play against Pitt again?

Troy – He is not 100% recovered. If you compared his 1st quarter of the Titans game to last weeks game there was a clear difference. He looked about 85% which is still very good. He sat out practice Wednesday, but is still expected to play.

Parker – Well, he has turf toe (recovering from)…which I have heard sounds like nothing but hurts like hell if you put a lot of weight on it. I cannot imagine trying to make a cut on that. Someone at BTSC wrote a good fanpost on turftoe, but I am too lazy to look it up. Also, keep in mind FWP is nearly 30, his days are numbered as back that carries a significant load in the NFL. Finally, as long as Mendenhall is carrying well FWP’s production will suffer.

College football – I went to the university of Maryland so i can’t help ya there.

Browns – I’m not sure I get the question. The Steelers played a great game, but scored low because of Mendy and FWP coughing up the ball. I don’t expect either of them to fumble this week.

Is the secondary primarily man to man or zone?

Do the corners play soft like some have said over your way?

by Salty on Oct 23, 2009 1:46 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I'd love to give you a straight answer, but...

LeBeau makes it difficult to explain our defense. On any given play no one, except Troy and maybe Dick have any idea what Troy is going to do.

However, in general, we do not give up big plays. The corners generally give a lot of cushion to prevent the deep ball. I’d say we play more man to man than zone on average.

The corners questionable at this point. Taylor and Gay, make plays, but Ratliff has not impressed anyone. Many of us want to work in one of our rookie CBs, Keenan Lewis or Joe Burnett, but apparently Tomlin sees something in Ratliff…

by Johnny_S on Oct 23, 2009 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

As I understand it…the secondary is primarily a version of cover 2 played out of the 3-4, though the steelers sort of play a 4-3 in that we’ll typically always be sending 4. The steelers don’t play a “cover 2” or a “tampa 2”, but they do incorporate concepts and are most closely related to those two.

The idea is that we are able to generate a good pass rush with just 4 and play some sort of cover 2 behind it. Troy may at any point in time abdicate his responsibilities and do something else entirely only giving putting us into cover 1. Depending on what our other safety Clark is doing, we might rarely (very rarely) leave our CBs in strict man-to-man.

Our CBs typically give cushions to prevent the big play. Ike can bump and run, but Gay is much smaller and typically isn’t the greatest at it. Our defense is all about preventing the big play. If Favre can go 15/15 and march you guys down the field, they may change up how they are playing. We’ve seen plenty of games where the steelers will just let the QB try the same thing again and see if he can do the same thing twice.

A lot of fans have been advocating playing more press coverage because QBs tend to dump off this year because of the pass rush, and because we give them the cushion. Our safeties play deep enough though that it would be pretty easy for our CBs to get burned.

Our CBs are great with help over the top and a cushion, and there’s a reason we can roll with a good (but not great) CB, a 2nd year 4th rounder, and an ancient nickel back. The scheme lets us get by with average CBs, but no one would confuse any of them with man-to-man guys (though Ike maybe could be). That’s why they are so cheap comparatively.

You sure Ike isn’t reacquainting himself with his fingers, he certainly doesn’t use them for catching. - Brian (DaBolts) on "Face Me Ike"

In your opinion

How do you beat the Steelers? What is their Achiles heel or closest thing to it?

For the Vikings you beat them with a possession passing game, over committing to the run, and playing red zone defense. Well, technically nobody has beaten them this year but from what I’ve seen that would be the way to do it.

Well that or stay within 20 and score 3 TD’s in the 4th quarter. But I wouldn’t recommend waiting that long if you can help it.

by Sand0 on Oct 23, 2009 1:54 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Short passes on quick drops, screens, and passes out of the flat. Our pass rush is very, very good and will get there if you take a split second to long. Generally, Lebeau will throw crazy Blitzes which can get us in trouble if you run a quick pass with blockers out there. That’s how the Titans spanked us last year. The only problem is if we are scoring, these quick plays won’t get you anywhere fast.

On defense you have to get to Ben and wrap him strongly. If you put one arm on him or go to high, he will shake you off.

Ugh. You just reminded me…McKinne vs Harrison. That is not a good matchup for the vikes. Harrison is pretty short right? Mt. McKinne has trouble with the short guys and he takes plays off. Scary.

by Spartan99 on Oct 23, 2009 3:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

if the run game fails vs. the Vikes

Ben may have to throw it 40 times and that could actually be to our advantage. it is weird watching the Steelers and hoping they come out throwing. with that being said, i would like to see Spin-Den-Hall touch it at least 25 times and go for 100+ yards. it will be tough against that front though. should be the best game of the year.

by WARDANE33 on Oct 23, 2009 2:34 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

He probably won't get 25 touches

Since they have such a good line, its easier to run outside…FWP has a quicker step and is better getting out there. I’d expect the Spin Doctor to get around 15 touches with FWP getting 10-15. It all depends on how the game goes though.

MeMo

should get the majority of calls for this game, being faster off the edge than The Rash. Plus his hands are better than FWP’s for dunks over the top of Allen.

I posted over on the Ratbirds blog on how to beat the Vikes last week

Basically; Offense: Quick 3 step drops, 5-10 yard TE/RB screens in the flat over Allen to keep him honest, Holmes or Wallace on blazing fast in/out routes, Hines on 10-15 yard comebacks, throw in a couple of reverses (away from Allen)

D: Ike to cover Harvin wherever he lines up (if he plays), The Beast fairly close to LoS to keep production down on flat screens and keep containment on AP, constant run blitzes(to the right side of Minnie’s O-line, methinks that’s where AP likes to run, if I’m wrong, tell me please!), maybe Timmons or Fox on Shianico, with Ryan “The Bruiser” Clark over top of Big Play to help take away the deep balls.

-Ralph Wiggum

by SteelFever on Oct 23, 2009 9:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

AP will run in all directions.

However he averages more yards when running to the left.

Right – 31 times for 165 yards
Left – 29 times for 239 yards
Middle – 22 times for 104 yards
Right Sideline – 16 times for 54 yards
Left Sideline – 22 times for 56

Some interesting notes:

AP has only rushed 3 times for 8 yards out of the shotgun position. They’re not looking for any deception there, and his average is higher when the defense has less than 4 on the line. I highly doubt the Steelers D will ever do this during running downs. I expect them to crowd the line just like everyone else. Should open up the pass game.

Mendenhall

I’m not sold on this guy. He carries the ball like a loaf of bread and I think he will have fumbling issues if he hasnt already. Dont see him break many tackles either. He played well on MNF the other week, but I’m not convinced. Good size and plent of talent, but something is missing.

What are your thoughts on him now and in the future? How will he perform on Sunday?

by Spartan99 on Oct 23, 2009 3:29 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Spin Doctor

I’m not 100% sold on him, but he has been playing great lately. Yeah, he still holds the ball out their, but good coaching should fix that. Also, he does run a little bit too upright, probably why he is not breaking enough tackles (and why he broke his collarbone last year). However, he is making a lot of people miss with a quick step and his spin moves (we all joke a lot that he spins almost on every play).

I don’t expect him to have a tremendous game Sunday…I actually expect to see FWP or MeMo have a big game, since they do better getting to the outside.

Do you think that MeMo is going to have a big game, even though he isn’t starting?

Most of our big plays given up recently have either been to the tight end or on a quick screen to the RB. Considering your best pass catching RB is Mewelde, and he might have something to prove to Childress, I am banking on him having a big game against us

by Bjorno on Oct 23, 2009 5:43 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

It would not surprise me

MeMo was a great fall back plan for us last year and had several huge games. This year I’ve forgot we had him on several occasions, but he is a great 3rd option for us. I expect him and Mendenhall to have big days as far as receiving yards go. If Allen is giving our OL fits, I am sure Ben will take quicker drops and look to check down quickly to the RB. Moore definitely has great hands and is a good blocker, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he saw a lot of snaps and had some big recs.

We beat ‘em 38-28, and kept LT and Sproles to under 100 yards…that’s how we fared.

Hey hey now.

I am not that kind of guy who will shoot down everything. I am cursed with the ability to see both sides of most stories (which really gets me in trouble with the ol’ lady).

You can’t say that LT is anywhere near where he used to be as far as carrying the ball, and you can’t say that Sproles is a solid rushing RB for the chargers either.

Combined they have 388 rushing yards LESS than AP this year.

To your credit, the Steelers have been able to keep their defensive dominance even with the loss of a leader like Troy Polamalu. But you still have yet to come across a team like the Vikes with a solid air and ground threat.

True...
You can’t say that LT is anywhere near where he used to be as far as carrying the ball, and you can’t say that Sproles is a solid rushing RB for the chargers either

It just goes to show how an amazing up-back can boost production for a mediocre RB. (See: Mack Strong and Shaun Alexander)

Which is exactly why I wish we could have gotten Big Jim K from the Vikes when we got MeMo.

That's a nice argument.

I smell a shoot-out, probably with a score similar to the Vikes/Ravens game last week. The Steelers haven’t given up 100yds to a back in 24 games, but I don’t think they’ve seen a ground attack like the Vikes recently either. If Polamalu were 100% I’d put his odds of getting a pick at about 75%, but he’s not. And I don’t see how the Vikings will slow down the Steelers air attack. The first time Allen gets to Big Ben he’s going to be surprised to find a QB as big and strong as he is.

What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

Allen’s got an inch and thirty pounds on Big Ben. He will still go down, just a little slower than normal.

Lots of LBs have size on BB…and they still haven’t been able to take him down. It’s not as easy as you think, for your sake, Allen better be aware of that.

We just haven’t played one comparable this year I suppose.

LT is going the way of Alexander

Sproles caught people off guard last year. Good player but can’t carry the team without the double punch and it isn’t there. SD better plan on rebuilding real soon.
No offense but AP and Vikes killed them at their best 2 years back. It isn’t much to brag on.
Suck of it is I drafted LT in 3 FF leagues hoping it was a fluke year last year. I can’t even get a bite for him in trade,

That guy is WAAAAAY too valuable. Basically, he is an undersized tackle who can catch the ball.

Plus, he would never leave Minnesota. The fishing is too good.

That guy has better hands than he is given credit for.

He has been recovering from a broken bone in his hand suffered in the preseason, so he hasn’t caught many balls. But he does have much better hands than you would expect for a blocker like him.

In the Tice era, he made up for our lack of receiving talent by catching a lot of balls for us. 46 receptions in 2004, good for third on the team. That doesn’t mean he was amazing, he is not very fast for a TE, but he made some amazing catches.

From Paul Allen ( Viking Radio Talk show Host)- How to Beat Pitt

I totally botched a stat on a huge Vikes-Pitt. opinion I had late in the ‘Show and feel awful about it. The stat was bad but the opinion still stands — the biggest offensive key to Minnesota winning at Pittsburgh is sticking with the run, even if Rube Nation thinks you are too “conservative.”
The angle involves Pitt. DE AARON SMITH, a highly underrated player in NFC country. He’s out for the season and is the best run-stopping DE they have in the 3-4 defense. We need to run at that spot and mash on it like it’s the last game ever played. His back-up is not in his class and they will look to cover him up by compensating other players to assist. Even if the rushing attack seems slow to go against a fired-up TOMLIN bunch stay on it and hope Minnesota Moving Company blocks it up and ADRIAN doesn’t try to hit home runs every carry and stays disciplined. Even though the Steelers are tough against the run we do it very well and it sets up everything in terms of pulling the upset. And it keeps their offense off the field.
If the Vikes run well the safeties (four picks between the starters) have to honor the “box” and we know what BRETT does when he sees single coverage. If POLAMALU plays make him run on that bad knee and put him in uncomfortable spots.
Pittsburgh will hit on some plays against us, no doubt, and some probably will be big. But keep those bits between the 20’s and make them beat you in the red zone where the seven-step drop and no-huddle can be less effective. I cannot see WINFIELD making this dance and am expecting BENNY SAPP and even ASHER ALLEN to play extensively. Guessing we won’t see much KARL PAYMAH out there at corner after the way last week played out. Obviously, that’s the biggest advantage Pittsburgh has in this game and it’s a real talker.
Man I hope we win this game because if we do we will be considered league wide a top-three favorite to win the Super Bowl. I’ll ’Prattle again this weekend from Pittsburgh.

Not one guy fills Aaron Smith’s role now. They are replacing his spot by a 3-man rotating committee, Travis Kirschke, Nick Eason, and 1st round draft pick Ziggy Hood.

Thanks, Johnny S. for doing this

Hey dude,

Thanks for being a class-act opposing fan and doing this for the Vike’s best Blog! I appreciate it.

My Question is:

Q: Could you (please) rate the Viking’s pass attack vs. the Steeler’s Secondary and vice-versa (via letter grades A-F)?

I’m not hearing a lot of discussion on how both passing offenses rank vs. each other’s secondaries (well there is obviously talk about the Steeler’s attack vs. our porous secondary but not as much about Favre and our receivers vs. the Steeler’s secondary).

Thank you!

Vikings pass attack (minus Harvin): B

Steelers pass defense (with Troy back): A-

Vikings pass Defense (minus Winfield): D+

Steelers pass offense (no plus or minus): A+

Final count: Vikings – C
                    Steelers – A

Advantage: Steelers.

Johnny ( and fellow DNers)

Tomorrow I may incite something at our pub. Steelers fans far outnumber the fan club there. Vikes fans are a distant second but we have fun. We all agree we want to see a Viking Steeler Super Bowl.
We agreed on one thing. Every sports bar in Florida has the Eagles fans as “Most Obnoxious” One guy says he doesn’t even consider Philly part of Penn. Made me laugh. I said we must have sent them down the road to the other place (less civalized).
Tomorrow I have to bring it on with my Steeler friends. They lay claim to a table and TV. Tomorrow I go in early.and put a Viking table cloth at their main table (they fill 5 tables) Flags, pennants and Vikings cups and snack plates. I’m going all out.
DNers give me some other ideas.
Johnny. Is there anything I shouldn’t do that would be too insulting?
I made the mistake of saying Troy’s girly voice went well with his hair in the head and shoulder commercial. ( I just don’t think he has a tough guy voice and the one comercial is kinda “pink” when he tells the interviewer he was looking with his eyes-hmmmm! I came close to busting a nut with that. The ladies got mad but most the Steeler guys agreed the commercials are femmy.
We all get along tho. Just don’t want to go too far. I have a huge Vike blanket I will put up out in front with a sign in big letters Welcome Viking Fans. In little letters " Steelers fans are welcome minus one table"
I’ll try to post a video clip later Sunday or Monday of their reaction and the fun.
I think it will be a reat game and have agrred to a bet where I wear a Steelers hat next week or visa versa.
Fly on down and join the fun.

6. Whichever team loses "it was the refs that lost us the game"

I feel fine about the win. There was a huge hold on your kickoff return TD. Bad calls happen.

Haha geez

Settle down a bit man. The holding call Johnny S pointed out was pretty noticeable my friend.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXX3GkUVEck&feature=related

At the 0:09 mark, you can see #59 holding a Steelers player who had his back to #59 until he grabbed him around his right shoulder. Just because the announcers didn’t mention doesn’t mean it still wasn’t likely a holding call.

And if Heath Miller doesn’t get called for a ridiculous pass interference call then the Steelers put up 7 instead of 3.

The tripping call wasn’t the only bad call in the game.

by packallday555 on Oct 26, 2009 12:46 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The "tripping?" call wasn't the only bad call.

You are correct. But it wasn’t a penalty that was not noticed, it was a penalty that a ref identified as happening but did not occur. There was absolutely no “trip” or attempted “trip”. This ref needs to be retrained.

"Skol pa fiskande"

by NobleSavage on Oct 26, 2009 1:20 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly. That and the fact that it had a 14pt impact, unlike any of the other supposed “penalties” that Steeler’s fans will come up with to justify their victory.

Any football fan who watched this game who wasn’t biased for either team would leave thinking we outplayed them in every way only to lose due to 2 factors: 1) a horrifically bad referee call and 2) a lucky deflection that went right to a defender’s hands. Nothing more.

Our offense was better (all around) than theirs, our Defense could’ve easily had several Interceptions and a fumble recovery and it shut down their passingi game, and finally our Special teams outplayed theirs as well. In every facet save the “lucky turnover and sh1tty Ref” statistics, we whupped ’em.

On any other day and especially away from their hometown refs, this is a big W for the Vikings. In that regard, the loss was far easy to take but in other ways it makes it just as disappointing. :(

by Wytefang on Oct 26, 2009 7:43 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

You guys did outplay them, though it wasn’t by much. They looked better in the 1st half and you guys looked much better then them in the 2nd half.

Lucky deflection? Taylor just whiffed on the pass. It wasn’t like a lineman tipped the ball up into the air and then it was intercepted. It was just a bad play by Taylor.

Noble- You can’t say that their was absolutely no attempted trip. Dugan did throw his legs up as he fell to the ground, and Harrison did seem to fall right as he did that. I don’t think Harrison fell because of this but think about what that looked like to the refs? Watching the replay on tv in slow motion makes it much easier to diagnose whether or not the call was valid. The refs don’t have this luxury.

by packallday555 on Oct 26, 2009 11:19 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, it was a lucky deflection. It deflected off Taylor’s hands, right into the lap of Fox.

Taylor did whiff, looking like he was turning up field before the ball was even in his hands.

But the tripping call was pretty lame. But like you said, they don’t have the luxury of slow motion. It’s the same thing with any bad call, the ref though he was making the right call and the replay shows otherwise.

We forget that the refs are correct in their calls like 95% of the time. That is pretty damned good for not having replay. But they are human and shit does happen.

It is a shame it happened the way it did, but I am sure the penalty fairies believe in Karma and we will see a bad call go our way sometime this year.

by Bjorno on Oct 26, 2009 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ridiculous pass interference?

Borderline, yes. Rediculous, no. It was arguably a pick, and the call probably could have gone either way,

But it is true that the tripping wasn’t the only bad call in the game.

by Bjorno on Oct 26, 2009 12:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

There was a huge hold on your kickoff return TD.

The tripping call was terrible. Don’t give us this lame attempt to justify it.

Enjoy your win and lets leave it at that.

by EasternVike on Oct 25, 2009 6:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Even if there WAS a hold on the kickoff return

That still doesn’t make up for the bad call, because there’s no guarantee PITT would’ve scored on the ensuing possession.

The way I see it, even WITH a bad kickoff return called, PITT came out on top:

Without the two bad calls: MIN up by 4.
With the two bad calls: PIT up by 3.

So no one is gonna admit it!!

The game went Steelers way because Brett fumbled and we ran it in as well as his interception thrown and we ran it in. With all the bullsh*t calls each week on each team it all comes down to the plays. No matter what. Our defense stepped up and got it. done. And not by just 3 or 4 points by 10. and to me it should have been 17 with our called back TD. but I wouldn’t care if it was 1 pt over. Steelers won. Viking lost.

I will say that holding happens on almost every play, and that only the most blatant offenses get called.

You can look at any play and say “there was holding”. In fact, I am pretty sure Jared Allen was held at least as many times as Favre threw the ball. :)

But you have to admit that it was a BS call. C’mon Johnny, I know you are a reasonable person and can admit that fact.

But that is football, bad calls happen and your guys played a great game and made some great plays on defense. They even scored me 29 points in my fantasy league.

I have said it was a bad call

I am not denying that. But bad calls happened BOTH ways today. If you want to take the “holding happens all the time” defense. Then I can use the horrible “pass interference” call on Heath Miller. It was an awful call.

My point is that we did not win because of penalties. We won because we made big plays at the right time.

As I mention in a post a few rows up, what bothers me is this contention that somehow the Steelers made the big plays when even a cursory dalliance with reality appears to show that the Steelers didn’t so much “make” big plays as “benefit” from a horrific Referee’s call and a ridiculously lucky deflection.

You can’t honestly thing your defender positioned himself to specifically expect a deflection of that nature.

That’s why most Vikes feel “jobbed” in this game and I can’t blame us.

by Wytefang on Oct 26, 2009 7:46 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think 'most' of us feel jobbed.

Some of us at least recognize that it was a close game that could have gone either way, and that one ref call was not the only determining factor.

“You can’t honestly thing your defender positioned himself to specifically expect a deflection of that nature.”

Maybe not, but you can’t deny the fact that the Steelers have shown the ability to make those kinds of plays over and over and over again. Give credit where it’s due to an opportunistic defense that is better than anybody else at knowing what to do with it when they do get a turnover.

Johnny S, thanks again for your considerable class in this post and on your own boards. Sorry there are a few poor sports here.

That is a weak argument. Do you think any defender has ever deliberately positioned himself for a tipped pass interception or fumble recovery? No. No one has. Smart defenders make plays when opportunities present themselves. That is exactly what Fox did, he made a heads up play of being aware of what was going on and keeping an eye on the ball. He made the big play when it mattered.

Exactly.

It was a damned shame the TD was nullified and it was a damned shame that the Steelers were good enough to strip the ball and return it for a TD.

Both teams played a great game. Our defense outplayed your offense, and your defense outplayed our offense. The difference was the big plays that your team made.

My heart goes out to Brett Farve. He is a great QB and leader. I love watching how he support his players and motivate the Vikings. I just can’t see him finishing on a high note this season. He was playing in pain all last season so it’s only natural to think he’s a bit stiff this season. His arm is strong and percise but it is 40 and damaged. It’s starting to show. I think he bring his all every week and soon he’ll be bringing less and less. Vikings will need more than Peterson to get em’ through. :-(
