How will the Vikings finish the season?
Remember 2006's 4-2 start and only 2 more wins the rest of the way for a 6-10 finish?
What about 2007 (a.k.a. the Tarvaris Jackson Amateur Year) when they started out 2-5 and finished 8-8?
Even 2008 seemed awful after a 3-4 start, but that team won the Division and promptly lost its only playoff game.
Fun with numbers: # of games in which the Vikings scored at least 21 points; # of games in which they scored 0 TDs:
2006: 5; 1
2007: 8; 1
2008: 7; 1
2009 through 7 games: 6; 0
The KAO appears to have arrived with Brett Favre, although the D we expected to see has been AWOL at times.
With all of that in mind, how do you expect the Vikings to finish 2009?

Yes 13-3 achievable
What has evolved now is a MUCH tougher team than as early as week 3, when we easily handled the Packers…Means trouble for opponents all the way and to include NYG….I would be disappointed if we did not go at least 13-3 and have one win in the playoffs (actually much further, but remember I am a long-time Viking fan so have to have reservations, is in my soul!)……
Home field advantage too throughout the playoffs would be nice too since we are speculating here….Now that the immediate pressure is off for being/staying undefeated…we can focus on these goals (for this season)…first division, then home field advantage, and finally that SB appearance/win…
Something to work for/achieve! Is STILL and will REMAIN a very great year to be a Viking fan no matter what! Many teams wish they had our “issues!” What to do w Favre, Harvin, Rice, Berrian, Peterson, Talor, Allen, Hutchinson, and many more…. Poor Viking fans huh! LOL YEAH!

lol
We’ll go far garunteed. Not positive we’ll get to teh big dance but we should walk over a lot of the teams coming up. I used to fear that when we lost we’d lose our vision but this team seems very goal oriented. Almost as if they taste that super bowl. I would really be suprised to see the Vikes fall much at all and start racking up losses.
And as you say vikefanfromafar. I’ve been on this norse boat a loong time and painfully expect to see some terrible things happen to us.

“And as you say vikefanfromafar. I’ve been on this norse boat a loong time and painfully expect to see some terrible things happen to us.”
I hear ya there—my first Soul-crushing Vikings Moment came in the NFC Championship game against the ’skins when Darrin Nelson dropped the tying touchdown pass on fourth and goal in the fourth quarter. Herschel Walker, Gary Anderson, 41-0, and Nate Poole all just added to my pessimism and fatalism regarding the Vikings.

PHANTOM TRIPPING CALL, cost the Vikes an undefeated season!
BULLSHIT!

Childress history and the once 9-0 Chiefs of a few years back leave me skeptical.
The Vikings did not lose to PIT on a bad call. They lost it on 3-4 dropped/deflected passes and the fact that PIT stopped AP. They didn’t successfully defeat the Ravens so much as the Ravens failed to win.
Potential losses: GB, CHI, ARI, CIN, NYG.
Winfield is rumored to have a 6-week injury, and I’m not sure whether that means returning to the field in 6 weeks or 100% in 6 weeks. Either way, that would affect those first 3 negatively.
The Panthers will probably beat someone this year and the Lions or Bears could surprise. I think if any of those three things happen, then the Vikes will beat that many of the other 5. The NYG game could very well be backups vs. backups in a meaningless game that the team could lose for that reason, too.
by KC Viking on Oct 26, 2009 3:14 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
We are a better team than any of those 5 you just listed.
If we can take it to the Steeler’s (which we did), we can beat anyone else in the league.

Can?
Yes.
Will?
Maybe.
GB is going to be a tough game, any way you slice it. But it is winnable.
NYG is probably going to be a backup vs backup game with no meaning.
Chicago…. Pfft. :)
Cincy and Arizona… Interesting games. All depends on Winfield.

And our second string offense will be okay, BUT
The second string defense always seems to get torched by sub-par qb’s, and David Carr would be no different!
Why Do People Question The Vikings' Status?
by UnBannedVikingholic on Oct 26, 2009 4:02 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
David Carr
led the Giants’ only TD drive against the Vikings’ starters in the 2nd half of last year’s game. TJ led the Vikes to 10 points vs. backups, and David Carr led his backups to 10 points vs. the Vikings’ starters. Had it not been for Favre, I’d have been 100% down with picking up David Carr.
by KC Viking on Oct 26, 2009 5:46 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed.
What he needs is an opportunity to learn the system and become comfortable with it. It was a shame that they threw him to the wolves too early in Houston.
David Carr is capable of being a legit NFL QB. Give him a supporting cast like the one he would have here and watch him prove the naysayers wrong.

I didn’t say that those 5 were better than the Vikes or even that they were certain losses. It’s possible to face an historically bad team (Lions, for example) on the 1 day that they are able to play well enough to win.
If they take it to their next opponents in the same self-defeating way they did vs. the Steelers, then they could lose to anyone in the league, too.
For all their strengths, I’ve never thought that the Vikings had a very good secondary, and those guys have come up short of my modest expectations. And now the best player of that group is hurt for however many weeks…not good.

Giants
New York doesn’t look as tough as they did before the Saints crushed them, and the Vikings get them at home. Plus, the Vikings have had Eli’s number the last couple times they played, so I’m not too worried about the Giants, although it is not a guaranteed win for Minnesota.

A little bit of this, a little bit of that
Essentially you’re right. The sudden case of butter-fingers by most of our receivers is really what cost the game.
Play-calling was questionable in a couple of instances, particular 1st and goal inside the 1 yard line.
Also the number of penalties; a hitherto fairly disciplined team broke out with a slew of penalties.
All of the above, the Vikings had control over, and they muffed it.
That being acknowledged…. the ref calls didn’t help matters. They could have been overcome, and would have been, but they iced the cake. The tripping call was questionable but I’d be willing to let that one fly. The ‘defensive delay of game’ penalties, on the other hand, were just silly.
Ah, ah,

From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.

To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!

I wish there was a "Vikings take the whole enchilada" choice
But 13-3 or 12-4 I can live with, beats 8-8 or 3-13 by a longshot!

Here’s my WAG:
Road games left: Green Bay, Arizona, Carolina, Chicago. I’ll say they go 2-2 in those.
Home games left: Detroit, Seattle, Chicago, Cincy, NYG. They almost always drop a home game they shouldn’t. Maybe Seattle, in that they have a good defense and are inconsistent, meaning maybe they show up to play that day. (Or maybe Favre-to-Lewis allowed the Vikes to dodge the annual bad Dome loss.) Cincy and NYG are probably the 2 best teams on that slate. Vikes could go 2-0 vs. those 2, or 0-2. I’ll split the difference and say 1-1. So, 3-2 or 4-1 at home.
That leaves me at 11-5 or 12-4.
BTW, when the Vikings and Giants play, it will be third consecutive year the two meet (2 in a row at the dome in the finale), and 4 times in 5 years. Sort of weird.

I say 18-1
As long as we win the SB i don’t care. 18-1 sound better. Also i am betting with the Vikings this season so 18-1 mean i am profiting.

12-4 + playoff win
Looking at the Vikings schedule, I see the game in Chicago as a likely loss.
As strange as it sounds, Cincinatti at home actually looks challenging.
I still think the Vikings win at Lambeau this weekend, but would not bet the farm on it.
Arizona and Carolina on the road are not gimmes, either.
So, on top of the loss to Pittsburgh, and a likely loss to Chicago at Soldier Field, I think the Vikings go 2-2 against Green Bay, Cincinatti, Carolina, and Arizona. That brings them to 12-4, and in the playoffs.

Chicago is not looking too hot these days.
I am not particularly worried about them. Any given sunday, they got a chance but not much besides that. They have no run game and their defense is looking pretty sorry.

The bigger question
Its great speculating what we will finish as, but does any of that really matter if our competition finishes better? Lets ask this question next. Looking at the Packers schedule how do you think they will finish in comparison to us. They’ve been looking mighty scarey lately. If we lose to them this week, there is a realistic possibility 11-5 doesnt make the playoffs.
by Jayrome007 on Oct 27, 2009 10:46 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Yes this week is REALLY important
I think the Packers know this even more than we do….
Always tough to stay on top of the figurative hill when you have envious siblings (OK maybe cousins or better neighbor – being nice here) trying to knock you off that hill and take your place…
We will have to quickly adjust this week from “what was” to “what is”, and plan for “what/how to do” so we play with the same venom or more even than against the Steelers….
Certainly the mettle this has will allow for that transition and make us a fearsome force on Sunday…Are the Packers better than the Steelers? I doubt it…
But to win they will have to be….

We'll know Sunday
While the Packers have looked good the last two weeks since their bye, we have to consider they were playing the Lions and the Browns. Sunday will determine if they were able to correct some of the O line problems or just got a false sense of security from play one weak team (Lions) and one brutal team (Browns).

11-5 makes the playoff, but might not take division
No real chance 11-5 doesn’t at least get a wildcard spot. could see Vikes and Pack each winning 11-12 games so it takes 12 W’s to win the division, but the lower record would still be a wildcard team in that scenario. Note, I only expect GB to win 9-10 games and expect the Vikes to win 12-13 so this to me is only an outside chance not what I’m saying I expect to happen.
by ChemErik on Oct 28, 2009 1:12 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Lets break it down
Ok, here’s where I’m coming from with the “11-5 might not get a wild card” bit.
a) Green Bay wins the division (with tie breakers) at 11-5. They currently have two losses and I only see 3 games left on their schedule that they should lose (Baltimore, Pitt, and either Dallas/Chicago/Arizona, but not all three).
b) Vikings reach 11-5 with the following losses: @Green Bay, @Chicago, @Arizona, NY
c) So lets assume these are division winners: Giants (11-5), Saints (15-1, NE is the only loss), Cardinals (12-4, super easy schedule), Packers (11-5)
d) That makes these possible wild cards: Eagles, Cowboys, Falcons, Vikings. The Eagles, Cowboys, and Falcons are only 1 game behind us in the standing. And looking at their schedules the Falcons could easily reach 12-4 and (though it would be difficult) the Cowboys or Eagles could reach 11-5, though not both.
e) Tie breakers would come into play and, assuming our losses are as predicted, that leaves us with worse overall conference record and knocks us out.
This is all uber-speculation and I don’t necessarily see it all unfolding like this. I just wanted to point out that we are far from assured a playoff spot. And let me add, this isn’t unprecidented. NE finished last year at 11-5 and didn’t make the playoffs. So don’t get too excited yet.
Ok, that’s all. Bring on the criticism.
by Jayrome007 on Oct 29, 2009 10:23 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
You really think
We are worse than Green Bay? I mean yo have them beating the Cardinals but us losing to them.. As for the Giants I believe they are seriously coasting on an easy schedule. As for Chicago beating us I’m almost more worried about losing to the Lions right now. The interesting thing is your don’t have Cincy in here, I would think they would be more dangerous than Chicago for sure and probably Arizona as they have a more complete offense. I will say we lose two more games, three at max, and we will need only two losses to pick up the bye.
I think we’ll need that buy at the end of the season to get Bret back up to speed and get ourselves mentally ready for the post season

As far as being worse than GB, maybe. We’ll see this Sunday. And I didn’t say GB would beat Arizona. In fact, I listed them as one of their possible losses.
Bottom line, this is not my prediction as to how the season will unfold, rather just how it realistically could.

I was going to say 13-3...
But then I remembered who our head coach is. He’ll give one away in the regular season; then I’ll take care of kidnapping him during the playoffs so we can win the Super Bowl :)
by ericj69 on Oct 27, 2009 8:07 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Excellent choice, I’ll donate to that fund. I figure the team can have him back after the Super Bowl so they can get ready for the draft, then he’ll have to disappear again.
by zebano on Oct 30, 2009 9:26 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
We need a better record than 12-4
We need beat the Packers this time and Chicago twice. I see Cincy and Arizona as two probable losses. If those are the only games we lose we go 13-3 and might get a bye. Thats what we need. A bye week for the playoffs. Saints will not lose more than three games. ( N.E., Atlanta, Dallas) is all they have left that have any talent. So we absolutely must get to 13-3. I think that Brett will need a week off at that point to get rested for the playoffs.
Here’s hoping, knowing full well how difficult this will be.
