The rise of Greg Lewis?

I finally got to see the game on NFL rewind

Star-divide

Forget about the bad calls because there was so much positive that I am totally stoked!

Sydney rice looked awsome.........AD..one word....BEAST!.......Brett......4 goodness sake

I see Greg Lewis got  some plays even before BB pulled up with the hammy.

Now this raised some questions.

1  Does anyone else feel that BB is gonna be nagged by these hammies all year(its both legs now)?

2  Is it possible that even if the hammies heel that Berrians playing time will be reduced as Lewis seems very

sure handed and they pick spots to get Jaymar more experience?

I would like to hear your thoughts on this!

One final note,  it broke my heart to see the look on Chesters face on the sideline after the tip & INT.

Hang in there Chester, we have total faith in you, Good things will come your way!

I didn’t notice that Lewis was in there before BB got hurt. BB sure hasn’t emerged as a distinct #1 IMO. He did well last year, but I expect a #1 to have Rice’s numbers!

Hamstrings are tough. I think you might be on to something with a phasing out of the double B.

On the AD smackdown show, I believe it was Lewis who held his block on Polamalu to get AD around the corner for an extra 15 yards.

I have to agree

that BB will likely get phased out. We have Harvin as a burner, Rice as an elite possession receiver. They will likely want to get Jaymar some possession time as I hear he puts in a lot of effort to improve his route running, etc. The one thing I haven’t heard is what BB’s work ethic is like? Is it anywhere near Rice’s these days? IMO, to pull a hamstring, you need to be doing a very poor job stretching. As a WR, you need to be able to get your palms around the arch of your foot in order to properly stretch out the hammy for the game. That is why most people pull hammys. That just shows lack of effort. IMO

If only it were that easy. If you can come up with the answer to hamstring problems, you will be a very rich man.

IMO, to pull a hamstring, you need to be doing a very poor job stretching.

Just because he pulled his hamstring he has poor work ethic? That is like saying 6 divided by 3 equals 42.

Stretching reduces the risk, yes. But it does not eliminate the risk of pulling a muscle. Once it is strained, it can be a bitch for a long period of time because you never really stop using it even though it is injured.

BB is an EXCELLENT receiver, and he is getting paid good money. There is no way we are not going to play him if he is healthy, and there is no way we are going to trade him after a year of low production due to hamstring issues.

It was the opposite hammy? Yikes.

Lewis does look like a reliable possession guy with some upside regarding his speed.

Jaymar does need more game time.

this time he did the left

Harvin as a deep threat

Yes, he is a burner, but we still havent seen him go up and make a play down field in single coverage. Im not sure he is the type of receiver who can go up and get a jump ball or make a play in tight coverage, but it hasnt stopped Farve from throwing it. But to his credit he has been very close on a couple and has prevented any potential interceptions. Steal of the draft!

BB is getting paid way too much to be phased out. Its unfortuanate he has struggled with injuries, but when healthy he is a threat and a playmaker.

Hopefully Raynard can get healthy soon so we can see what he and J Johnson can do. They have both flashed potential. Give Chilly credit for keeping them and dumping bobby, I didnt think he would.

How exciting is the breakout of Sydney Rice! I expected him to break out last year, but injuries held him back so I held back.

This will be a very good receiving core for years to come.

Agree

There was a lot to like about that game…in spite of the loss….Cheer up Viking fans…more and better is yet to come….I do note a swing in the mood of the fans now that we have digested/rehashed the Steelers game to ad nauseum…

This year reminds me of the 70’s teams we used to field….Even more than then or even the late 90’s, this team has it all…just need to minimize mistakes…and believe….like we all do….and play smash mouth football, like AD does…

I too am pumped for the remainder of this year and beyond for the team and for our enjoyment…So many great players to key on….Can hardly wait for the next game…Hmmm, who are we playing again, and where?? Ooooof…

Notice how every week seems like we are saying “This is important/the most important game of the year, etc.” and this week is no exception, but likely more true than for any of the past games…

YES! GO VIKINGS!

Berrian has a purpose

Yes, he’s been inconsistent and unspectacular so far. But I don’t think its wise to give up on him as he can do the one thing that none of our other WRs can: streak down field and catch the long ball. I know Rice has caught a few of those this year but he’s not going to be outrunning many CBs and eventually his success will draw a safety. And don’t even get me started on Harvin’s down field ability. That guy is an example of wasted speed. I won’t even mention a certain T__y W________n because Harvin is 300 times better as a short posession receiver, but his inability to catch the long ball does remind me of him.

by Jayrome007 on Oct 28, 2009 9:08 AM CDT reply actions

Totally different receivers

TW was best at getting open downfield for deep balls and just couldn’t catch the balls thrown to him. Berrian isn’t as good at getting open, but can make the catch. Harvin isn’t a deep pass receiver, he’s better at running slants, ins, outs, and other routes designed to get him in space to get YAC. In fact, he’s more suited to most typical WCO routes than any of our other receivers. Only other guy who’s even close is Rice, who is better at fighting for tough catches and high throws, but not as good (though not bad) at YAC.

by ChemErik on Oct 28, 2009 9:47 AM CDT up reply actions

Then you agree, right?

Thats my point exactly. Berrain has a unique purpose on this roster that cannot be replaced by any of the other recievers. People shouldn’t be willing to flush him down the depth chart just because he’s started a little slow or has a nagging injury. When he’s healthy, I say use him repeatedly.

by Jayrome007 on Oct 29, 2009 9:49 AM CDT up reply actions

No, he doesn't have a unique spot

He’s had 2 big problems from day 1 with the Vikings;

1) Injury prone
2) Lack of break-away speed, not a true #1 speedster WR

We’ve argued #2 back and forth for a while, but the bottom line is that BB only occasionally displays real speed. Most of the time, he gets separation by taking advantage of the secondary’s mistakes, and he’s really good at that. Given some separation, he can usually stay ahead of them long enough to get to the end-zone, but he’s rarely outrunning anyone.

I used to think that was enough.. but this second hammy is the last straw. It’s time to recognize that BB will probably continue to be injury-prone for the rest of his career, and pulling him in was a huge mistake. Not just because of his issues, but also because of what his salary does to the baseline of what other players are asking.

Flushing him down the depth chart is a bad solution. Trade him away, get some good draft pics for him. We don’t need to immediately replace him because we have Harvin, Rice, and JJ waiting in the wings with Reynaud close behind.

Inability to catch the long ball?

I have only seen two passes thrown to him deep.

One he was blanketed by a defender who had excellent coverage and he almost caught the ball.

The other was against the Steelers when he was hit by Clark directly after catching the ball. Clark is the heaviest hitter in their backfield and hit Harvin on his bad shoulder. You can’t expect anyone to hold onto that ball especially when the ball gets to the receiver late.

by Bjorno on Oct 28, 2009 11:05 AM CDT up reply actions

Yea. Troy was great at getting WIDE open and dropping the ball.

By wide, I mean by like 20 yards.

Show me one instance of Harvin dropping a wide open long ball, then I will accept your evaluation of Percy Harvin.

by Bjorno on Oct 28, 2009 11:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Never said he was wide open

Ya, I see your point on the comparison. Harvin doesn’t have Troy’s horrible hands. I don’t think I’ve seen Harvin wide open enough to judge him on that part of his game.

But regardless of the comparison, I’m far from thrilled at Harvin’s un-Rice-like ability to catch the deep ball in traffic (or with even single coverage). I’m thinking of 2-3 from the steeler’s game that he dropped and another 3-5 from throughout the rest of the season where the ball is threaded into a tight spot (thank you, Favre) but Harvin can’t take the hit and hold on.

And I should also clarify that I do love the guy. He’s a phenomonal short yardage YAC WR and I love seeing the ball in his hands. I am just pointing out an area of weakness that needs some work and hopefully he can correct. Otherwise, he’s not quite as dynamic and versatile as advertised.

by Jayrome007 on Oct 29, 2009 9:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Interesting

I have just the opposite impression. Harvin has caught some long bullets from Favre with his hands out — an indicator that he can catch the long ball.

Harvin is not tall and not a leaper. But he is fast and can catch. He has not run the routes that Rice and Berrian have run — the straight go routes. He has run a couple of posts from the slot, and he has been nblanketed by deep safety each time. You really can’t compare Harvin to Berrian this year because they play different positions and run different routes.

Vikes line up with at least 2 TE’s most of the time. 3 WRs is not the typical set. Rice and Harvin vs. Rice and Berrian? I like both, but I am thinking that Harvin is going to get better every year. If only we had a QB for the future……

Agreed

Harvin had a bad day against the Steelers, as did Berrian, and Shanko, and ‘Sass-man, and CT. All of them were dropping the ball, literally and figuratively, but that’s not the norm for any of them, so I’m willing to forgive and move on.

I don’t know if Harvin is going to pan out in the long run, but he’ll be exciting finding out.

Sorry

It was a little much. My bad. Invoking that name should be reserved for the worst of the worst. Harvin doesn’t deserve that. Wish I could delete it but I can’t.

Lewis

Yes he was in there fairly early in the game, favre tried to throw to him on one of the 1st quarter possessions I think (incomplete).

Who knows. It’s clear Chilly is comfortable with him from their days in Philly, and wanted him enough to let go Bobby Wade. To go ahead and do that, and to do it only days before the start of the season, he must have plans to play him frequently.

by puddnhead on Oct 28, 2009 3:41 PM CDT reply actions

Harvin had a 40+ yard reception (mostly in the air) vs. the Pack, right?

It’s a testament to the receiving corp’s rapid development that Berrian having hamstring issues isn’t a total bummer, as he’s almost option 3 or 4 in the passing game right now (behind Shianco, Rice, and maybe Harvin).

I think I agree DC

very good trade bait!
also with cool damp conditions in Lambeau he wont play much if at all.
Perfect chance for Lewis to shine as the Packers will no doubt key on Harvin and Rice.
