Its never to early to look at the upcoming draft Pt 1 QB
what does this team need
Lets hear some of your sugessions
Hello loyal vikings fans for the last 7 years I've been watching the draft more carefuly and I accurately predicted the first round of last years draft.
So what does this mean for our team, well I know its still early to subjest what pick we could have, but we can still wonder who might be there and based so far on what play I've seen this year these are some positions and players at those postions that we might be able to grab
Qb
I know guys right now we have Farve, but like the packers tried to do for many years we need to adress this position I believe this year. T jack is not the answer and neither is Rosenfels, we need a legimate successor to get in learn and be ready to take the reigns when he is ready, here are the canidates
Jevan Snead, Ole Miss Snead was a top 10 pick before the season started, this year he has struggled and i think his draft stock has falling because of it. At 6-3 215 lbs snead is a protypical NFL QB with good accuracy and a lively arm this is a very good pick,
Jimmy Clausen, Notre Dame Clausen is a long shot falling out of the top 15, Scouts over the past fews weeks are just drooling over how much improvement clausen has shown over the season, I dont see him falling far that low depending on his combine workout, Like Snead, Clausen at 6-3 217 is a typical pocket passer and some teams will be intreguied to take him
Colt McCoy, Texas McCoy has had alotta talent around him overthe years at UT, He is a sporatic passer at times and seems to look down WR'S at times. At 6-3 210 he is a more mobile QB than the other 2 I have named already but like Clausen he will go before we get to pick
Sam Bradford, Oklahoma This would be nice wouldnt it guys, at 6-4 218 Bradford is deadly accurate with his passes, and smart with the ball, With that shoulder surgery this week i think it hurts his draft stock, because he wont be able to do any workouts for teams until after the draft, He is still one of the first 2 QB taken this year and i dont see us moving up to get him, its okay to dream
Zach Robinson, OKlahoma St, Robinson like Bradford and McCoy have feasted on poris defenses over the past few years, and his stats show this, also it doesnt hurt either you have a Top 3 WR in Dez Bryant to throw to he will get some looks will have to see what happens
Other possibilities Darryl Clark, Penn St/ Dan LeFevour Cntrl Mich/ Todd Reesing Kansas
CB

Not sure who I like
Snead looked good last season, he has a strong accurate arm and shows some leadership qualities but he has looked pretty poor this season. I also like clausen he definitely has an arm and has looked good in the pocket at times. It is too hard to judge bradford and mccoy because of the offenses they work in. Colt doesn’t seem to really have a nfl arm.
It will be interesting to see where they all go in the draft.

Most big name/overhyped QBs fizzle out
Which strikes the first 4 off of your list. I think Robinson would be a choice out of the top 5 you listed.

We need a grat pocket passer... what we don't need is a mobile one
we need one similar to tom brady or peyton manning.. a passer that will stay in the pocket.. now i know.. finding one of those 2 is rare.. but just saying as an example

Early draft thoughts
First of all, its never to early to start thinking about the draft. Love to hear it!
Second, though we do need a QB eventually, I’ve personally been eyeing the DTs in this draft as we will need one to replace Pat Williams soon (if not next year). The fall-off from Williams to Fred Evans/Jimmy Kennedy is far greater than the fall-off from Favre to Rosenfels/Jackson. In other words, Rosenfels/Jackson can handle carrying their load better than Williams backups could should they be pressed into service.

Ndamakon Suh
Hands down. Too bad he’ll be taken top 5 so we’d have to shell out a lot of value to trade up from number 32.

Tony Pike is not special
Since he’s been hurt, Zach Collaros has played quarterback for Cincinnati. He is putting up the same kind of numbers as Tony Pike.
I don’t think Pike really loves to play football. He doesn’t play with a chip on his shoulder. He doesn’t care.

The good news on Snead: In his last two games, he’s completing over 65% of his passes at over 10 yards per attempt.
The bad news: Those games were at home, against UAB and Arkansas, the 113th and 58th ranked defenses, respectively. And even with those two games thrown in, his production just doesn’t warrant a first round pick.
I really think this year’s QB class is fool’s gold. The only names I’d be okay the Vikings springing a first round pick on are Clausen and maybe Bradford. If they’re not there, I’d focus on reloading on the defensive front 7 (I’d say the secondary, too, but given they’ve invested 3 big contracts and a 2nd round pick all in the last 2 years on the secondary, I don’t think they’re ready to go there), and try again in 2011. (Case Keenum in Round 2-3! Just my opinion…)
Of course, if Chilly’s extended, maybe he’ll feel secure enough for a project QB redeux….God help us.

Hey Arkansas Is My Team
And that Flordia game where the Ref’s actually “Cheated” and got suspended for it took alot out of us. Our schedule has been crazy.
Georgia *Alabama * Texas A&M Auburn * Florida * 1
and finally Ole Miss! All these tough games back to back would have the Vikings exhausted!

Mallet is only a sophmore, yes that would be nice to get him i looked into this situation because if he was available he would be the 1st QB on my list

Jevan Snead
Not that it matters, but did anyone else know that dude is white? I would have never guessed it with a name like Jevan Snead. Either way, I don’t like him as a pro prospect very much.

I would like to see Bradford of them all
I think he looks like he makes the best reads on the defense and seems like he sees the field the best out of all of them. We have gone to many times to the trough looking for an athletic QB. I seriously wouldn’t mind one in a wheel chair if he actually had a brain in his head.
But really if we can’t get Bradford I say we hit a DT there are some monsters out there this year… The offense always has AD to rely on if Favre decides to bow out next year. The defense, well we need to keep them strong.
by Grime on Oct 30, 2009 8:06 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree
Bradford will likely fall as people will be afraid of his injury. I don’t think he will fall far enough to reach us so I think a draft day trade may be required.
Now the other belief I have is that usually only 2 or 3 QBs hit the first round. I believe McCoy will be taken first and probably # 1 by the Rams. Then the question becomes who is the “riser”, the one who does well in the combines and everyone believes is the hidden gem? Could that be Pike, could it be Claussen? Snead? Or maybe it is Tebow who moves up enough to be the 2nd QB taken?
Anyway, I see Bradford as a worthy risk in the 20’s of the first round. Any higher is fairly risky.
by PurpleJesus on Oct 30, 2009 7:17 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
McCoy is a reach at #1
Have you heard of Jake Locklear from Washington he has the size and athelism to play at the next level, has the same size and arm strength that made carson palmer a 1st round pick the coach there came from a USC system yes Leinhart,Booty, have been busts but guys like Cassel, ans Sanchez have thrived in the NFL just saying keep a eye on Jake Locklear
by mad_wacker39 on Nov 1, 2009 1:35 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, heard of him
From what I have heard he isn’t even being talked about as a 1st round projection. I have heard people project Bradford (pre-injury), Claussen and McCoy as #1, but never him.
Dan LeFevoure of Cent Mich is a possible surprise candidate that will probably move up the ranks like Flacco did coming out of Delaware.

'They'
Are stating that Bradford might even drop to the second round since there is no way he’ll be able to throw for the combine. Since he won’t be able to throw the talking heads and scouts don’t believe he’ll be worth a 1st round pick for most teams.

Doubt the QB we need will be there.
I expect the Vikings to be drafting in the bottom third of the first round and hopefully the 32nd pick. That being said I doubt we will find the future starting QB at that point.
I agree with Jayrome007 that we need to address the DT’s as Phat Pat hinted that by the time the NFL gets around to suspending him and Kevin over the Star Caps thing he might be retired. That would leave a huge void in our D line that none of the current backups can fill on a regular down basis.
Many scouting reports have this draft as a strong one for DT’s while the QB’s seem to be more of the Brady Quinn type, all hype little substance. Yes there are a few good ones but they will likely be gone by the time we are picking. There is no need to pay someone huge dollars to hold a clip board…Sage already has that role filled :-P
Keep in him that Tom Brady who is regarded as the best QB around, not named Manning, was a 6th or 7th round pick. There are some guys that don’t go in the first day that can be brought along. Maybe we can convince Brett to play one more year to groom some diamond in the rough to start in 2 years time. We also need the right fit in a QB. As the past few years has proved not all QB’s can play the West Coast Offense (KAO) effectively but when you bring in the guy with the right skills and mental make up things can change in a hurry. We need to find the right player for this offense.

Keep in him that Tom Brady who is regarded as the best QB around, not named Manning, was a 6th or 7th round pick. There are some guys that don’t go in the first day that can be brought along.
That’s true, but it’s still rather rare. Research suggests if you want a good or potentially franchise QB, your odds are best if you take the consensus 1st or sometimes 2nd QB on the board. After that, amongst QBs taken later, it’s largely a crapshoot, and most often they won’t succeed. Tom Bradys or Kurt Warners (small school UDFA) or historically, guys like 3rd rounders Fran Tarkenton, Dan Fouts, or Joe Montana are quite rare. I’m an advocate for taking a QB every other year or so, but mainly for depth and potential development guys. Given the Vikings are going to need a starter soon and don’t exactly have a long term current occupant (possibly not even next year), I’m not sure their chances are great for finding one unless they spring early.
Now, you don’t want to reach, of course. And I’m with you on the defense needing some youth, talent, and depth up front. But I think if you have an opportunity for a potentially good QB, you need to spring on it.
All that is to say, if they have a shot at Clausen or Bradford (assuming scouts/staff like them), then I think they need to do it. (I’m not sold on Locker yet, and I’m not convinced he’s declaring, anyway.) If not, then yeah, find some help for the d-line and take a depth guy like Zac Robinson or someone in the middle of the draft (or swing another deal for a QB buried on a depth chart). Just don’t expect Robinson to be the next legit starter. I mean, if it happened, fantastic. We won a lottery ticket, essentially. But it’s not likely.
That’s not a terrible worst-case scenario: If Favre retires and TJack (and probably the team) decide it’s time to cut ties, they’d have Rosenfels starting, Zac Robinson (or whomever) holding the clipboard, and maybe a David Carr-type FA. Not ideal, but maybe you find a good player or two for the defense, and you roll the dice on a QB in 2011.
It’s really amazing, looking around the QBs who have started around the league this year, how few of them are actually non-1st-round guys.
Pats: Brady (6)
Jets: Sanchez (1)
Bills: Edwards (3), Fitzpatrick (7)
Dolphins; Pennington (1), Henne (2)
Steelers: Roethlesberger (1)
Bengals: Palmer (1)
Ravens: Flacco (1)
Browns: Quinn (1), Anderson (6)
Colts: Manning (1)
Texans: Schaub (3)
Jags: Gerrard (5)
Titans: Collins (1)
Broncos: Orton (4)
Chargers: Rivers (1)
Raiders: Russell (1)
Chiefs: Cassell (7)
Giants: Manning (1)
Cowboys: Romo (UDFA)
Eagles: McNabb (1), Kolb (2)
Redskins: Campbell (1)
Vikings: Favre (2)
Packers: Rogers (1)
Bears: Cutler (1)
Lions: Stafford (1), Culpepper (1)
Saints: Brees (2)
Falcons: Ryan (1)
Panthers: Delhomme (UDFA)
Bucs: Johnson (5), Leftwich (1)
Cardinals: Warner (UDFA)
49ers: Hill (UDFA), Smith (1)
Seahawks: Hasselback (6), Wallace (4)
Rams: Bulger (6), Boller (1)
Almost all the franchise guys or even “legit” starters come from the first or second round. The exceptions being Brady and Kurt Warner (some think Romo’s a franchise guy, but I’m not sure about that). Otherwise, you’re very, very lucky if you have a Matt Schaub, David Gerrard, or Matt Hasselback.
Another alternative we’re maybe not discussing quite as much as we should is pulling a minor trade for a not-that-bad QB buried on the depth chart. Our former guy Tyler Thigpen just went to Miami before the deadline for a conditional draft pick, for example. Seriously, depending on what the pick ends up being, I wouldn’t have complained about the Vikings reacquiring Thigpen.
by jianfu on Oct 30, 2009 11:19 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
And, to add:
Of the starters that were not in the first two rounds, most were drafted as career backups behind the real franchise starter (Schaub, Warner, Hasselback, Bulger, Brady, Orton, Cassell). So it’s not even like teams went out and said "Hey, this 6th round guy is going to be our man in 2 years), only injury or other situations forced those guys into that role.

+++! to the both of you
Excellent research on the draft positions, Jianfu. Really opened my eyes on how a team should address the Qb position during the draft.
Danwood, you summed it up exactly. You can’t just assume any Qb taken after like round 2 will ever amount to anything. Really, that actually goes for most players. 1 and 2 are for starters, 3 is for potential starters, and everything else should just as well be counted as a loss because the percentage of success is minimal at best.

Not guaranteed he’s coming out yet, plus he plays on the west coast and no one seems to watch the west coast except for USC games. Locker could use another year in college and he will (should) probably not start right away in the pros, but he has everything you look for in an NFL QB:smarts, size, athleticism, and is a true leader. He also would continue to look great in purple ;)

Some quarterbacks, especially from the MAC
Let me lay out my thought process so the guys don’t come out of the blue.
First, when it comes to the draft, especially in the first round, I am sold on taking the best player available, unless it’s a running back. The Vikings don’t need to draft a running back high, even if a highly-touted back like Jahvid Best is available. He just wouldn’t see the field much. While defensive end is not the biggest need on the Vikings, if a star defensive end drops to the Vikings, that would be a tempting draft pick. Ray Edwards has not yet developed his pass-rushing technique very much.
On to needs. The Vikings’ potential draft needs are G, DT, S, and QB. Right up the middle. The biggest need is guard. Hutch has played bad this year, and Herrera hasn’t made the Pro Bowl yet in his career. Pat Williams probably has another year, but he might retire after this year. We need a large DT to step into Pat Williams’s job after Big Pat retires. I think our safeties will be solid, but they haven’t proved it yet. Favre will probably retire after this season.
For my money, Tarvaris Jackson is the future franchise quarterback of this team. Period. The Vikings should give Jackson another contract. Vikings fans should cheer when Jackson signs it. Rosenfels is a good backup QB. Booty was probably not going to work out for the Vikings, unfortunately.
All that said, the Vikings should draft a quarterback for insurance purposes.
The ideal qualities of the Vikings quarterback of the future are: strong leadership intangibles, work ethic, strong workout habits, absolute love for playing the game of football, good height, strong arm, physically gifted, self-disicipline, great potential, ability to handle psychological pressure, good throwing mechanics, willingness to take physical punishment to help the team, accurate thrower, ability to grasp the playbook, smart and not overly clever, and good moral character. The ultimate test is: “Does he makes his teammates better?”
Very, very few quarterbacks come out of college with all of those qualities from day 1. Maybe Dan Marino was like that, but you could count them all on one hand. Most guys have to develop. Some guys develop faster or slower. Tarvaris Jackson has a lot of the more innate qualities. He still has to master “accurate throwing” and “willingness to take physical punishment” as in big hits while throwing downfield. He still has lots of things to work on. Brett Favre has said that it took him 9 years in the NFL before he could read defenses. By then he already had a Super Bowl ring. Great quarterbacks are typically productive through their mid-thirties or even longer. Tarvaris Jackson, age 26, has 10 or more potentially years ahead of him if he improves himself.
Will Jackson mature into a multi-year Pro Bowl quarterback who leads his team to the top? I don’t know. Nobody knows. He has proved that eventually he might be that guy. That is why we need to hang on to him and keep on developing him.
Now that I’ve explained this, I hope anybody can see that I want the Vikings to keep investing in Jackson. I expect him to become “the guy” for the Vikings. As you never know for sure, the Vikings still need to draft a quarterback in 2010.
Tim Tebow has peaked in his abilities. While he is a great college player, he won’t have enough talent to excel at QB in the pro game. Jimmy Clausen has great intangibles but he throws sidearm. That won’t work in the NFL.
It’s OK to draft a QB from a smaller school. Sometimes Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks come out of smaller, lesser-known schools. Favre went to Southern Mississippi, Rothlisberger, Miami of Ohio; Kurt Warner, Northern Iowa; Phil Simms, Morehead State; Terry Bradshaw, Louisiana Tech.
Here’s a list of some quarterbacks I’m interested in right now. If I were the Vikings, I would want to scout these guys.
Tim Hiller, 6’3, Western Michigan.
Dan LeFevour, 6’3, Central Michigan
Casey Keenum, 6’2, Houston
Colt McCoy, 6’2, Texas
Now for one outside the normal discussion.
Tyler Sheehan, 6’3, Bowling Green State. He has a great arm. He threw an incredible pass evading two defenders to make a 2-point conversion in the Metrodome to defeat the Gophers in overtime. He has great stats. He is a senior. He will have played for four years in college, and started for three. What impresses me about Tyler Sheehan is that he has a teammate, Freddy Barnes, who is leading the nation in receiving. Now, maybe that is just Freddy Barnes making Tyler Sheehan look good, but maybe not. Maybe Sheehan has developed that intrinsic, intangible set of leadership qualities, and he has started to “make his teammates better.”
I hope the Vikings scout these guys.
by medicineball on Oct 30, 2009 3:04 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I’m a big Case Keenum fan. Not saying he’ll make it or he won’t; who knows? But he’s just fun to watch: He slings it all over the place Drew Brees style, is so smooth and relaxed in the pocket, and knows when to take off and run (e.g., once he sees the pass opportunities aren’t developing). Also seems to have the ever elusive “it” (by my eyes, anyway).
Comes from the same school/system as Kevin Kolb (but with better numbers), and Kolb’s looked good this year filling in for Donovan McNabb, FWIW. I’d love the Vikes to nab him with a 2nd rounder in 2011. (He’s just a junior, so I don’t think he’s coming out this year.) I like him a lot better than guys like McCoy, Tebow, or Snead.
by jianfu on Oct 31, 2009 2:47 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Of course, Keenum today threw for 559 yards (54 attempts), completed 81% of his throws, with 5 TDs to 1 INT, including a long strike game-winning TD with 20 seconds remaining.
Versus Southern Miss or no, it’s going to be hard to keep under the radar with those types of games.

Tyler Sheehan update
Bowling Green played Buffalo tonight on ESPN2. It was my first chance to see Sheehan play. Bowling Green came back to win 30-29.
I am very impressed with Tyler Sheehan, Bowling Green’s quarterback. He has lots of talent. He is in an offense that resembles the WCO. He takes some snaps under center, but mostly from the shotgun. He throws screen passes very effectively.
His accuracy is overall pretty good. He missed some passes. He made the throws when it counted, especially on 3rd down. His eyes are always looking downfield. He has a good feel for the pass rush. He has decent feet. He scored a touchdown on a short run.
He’s a pretty well-developed kid at 6’3. Reports are he works hard at getting better.
Freddie Barnes, their wideout, will be drafted in the NFL. He is very good. Sheehan and Barnes have good chemistry. If we have a draft pick available for a wide receiver, Barnes should have our interest.
Sheehan threw an interception that was caused by the Buffalo pass rush. Sheehan couldn’t get set. The ball was underthrown. The ball was thrown to Barnes, who was open. The officials called a penalty for defensive pass interference that would have negated the INT, but for some reason that they did not explain, the flag was picked up. Buffalo was getting pressure with their base defense.
Bowling Green, Sheehan, and Barnes were down 29-16 after 3 quarters. Taking advantage of a short field after a blocked kick, they scored the touchdown on the Sheehan run.
Later, down 6 points, Bowling Green was marching again. With 8 minutes to go, BGSU could not convert a 4th and 3 in the red zone. Buffalo marched it back, but eventually had to punt.
Subsequently, Sheehan led his team on a 75-yard toudown drive in the final 3 minutes of the game. He threw to probably five different receivers on what seemed like a 10-play drive. Finally, in the end, he found Barnes in the end zone from about 20 yards out for the game-winning touchdown.
Sheehan had about 290 yards passing, 1 TD, and the INT.
The comeback drive was very impressive. Tyler Sheehan was cool, calm, and focused. There was a sense of great confidence on Bowling Green’s side during the final drive, even after they took a bad penalty or faced some third downs. Sheehan converted two 3rd and 10s by throwing strikes to two different wide receivers.
Sheehan has a good throwing motion. He has good intangibles. He plays with a chip on his shoulder. He clearly enjoys playing football.
Sheehan throws strikes all over the field. His throws are line drives that go right to their target. He is not always accurate. Few quarterbacks that age are. He throws a nice deep ball and his “lob” into the end zone has nice touch.
This might be our guy.

Vikings won't draft a QB 1st round
I have been advocating for a #1 QB pick ,as long as they fit our system, this year. I don’t think it will happen for one reason. UNCAPPED SALARY YEAR.
The Vikes can wait one more year and get a #1 QB for less money. The juniors who come out this year ( Claussen, Bradford) are crap shoots that are going to grab the brass ring. Next years crop of QB’s will be seniors and for less money.
Watch this be the Vikes year for DT, OG, and CB’s.
by lifelongvike on Oct 31, 2009 7:45 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Agreed, Mostly
If we can get a really good QB prospect, we should go for it. Clearly we need it because BF isn’t going to stay forever (unless we can talk him into transitioning to a QB Coach position).
But we absolutely need to draft a monster DT to be Phat Pat’s understudy for a year or two, and another offensive lineman wouldn’t be amiss either.
The next biggest need is a ball-hawking, intelligent corner. Asher Allen looks like he’s going to work out, but we need at least one more who can slide between the corner and safety slots to give our secondary a much needed boost.
Finally, we need to keep an eye out for a true speedster WR. Berrian’s been ok, but he hasn’t exhibited break-away speed very often (which makes me suspect that he’s only ‘fast’ when playing against slow coverage) and worse, he’s injury prone. Tired of that. For as much money has he’s making, he should be a lot more productive and reliable. We can probably fill this need in FA next year, but it needs to be kept in mind.

Interesting Article about Bradford
This article was written last year analyzing Sam Bradford for the last years draft. Read this and see if you think this pick is risky. It really tells his wekness and shows what he should have improved on this year. Now with an injury problem? The next Manning or Leaf? You tell me.
by lifelongvike on Oct 31, 2009 8:13 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
can he be a pro?
The reason he might be a great NFL quarterback is that he gets hits the receiver in stride. For a WCO, that could mean a lot of YAC.
The reason he might not be is that he might not have the ability to look off defenders. In the NFL, you can’t stare down receivers like Bradford has done in the college game.
I also question his hand size and strength. From film it looks like Bradford has small hands, which would result in a lot of fumbles, like we saw with Daunte Culpepper. I can’t tell for sure though.

Does any of that matter if he's out of reach for the Vikings?
I suspect not, and even if we only do as well as last year, to expect Bradford to fall down into the 20’s is being unrealistic.

He shows a lot of non NFL QB issues. His mechanics aren’t great and I think that’s going to take a while to work out. As well I would look for an intelligent QB more than anything else, and I think Bradford brings that to the game.
