Ask a Packer GM
I have heard that there is a certain game this weekend that has the attention of the national media. I, Ted Thompson, am here to answer any questions you Viking fans have about this game or any other matters concerning the Packers-Vikings Rivalry, match-ups, injuries or anything that could affect the outcome of this game. Also I would like to say there are no hard feelings between Brett Favre and myself, in fact I still have an autographed picture framed in my office.

We are comfortable with Matt Flynn..
And I’m guessing we would reach out to Brian Brohm or maybe look at some vetern QB’s out there… Garcia is one that comes to mind, He is familiar with the offense and his leadership and experience would be a key factor in a decision to bring him in. Ideally we would just want Aaron to stay healthy, if he were to get injured I think our team would be trouble.

Garcia is a Raider
and really, Matt Flynn? You’re comfortable with him coming in?? Really? Good luck on that one Pack. and good luck this weekend, you’re certainly going to need it.
Jeff Garcia is a free agent...
and any team dramatically falls off if their starting QB goes down. Look at the Vikes, they would be in trouble if Favre goes down… But the vikes wouldnt go trade for a all pro QB, they would ride out the storm until Favre came back. That applies to the pack also, If Rodgers goes down they would ride it out until Rodgers came back.

They in fact did sign him

The Packers, that’s who.

got me at Garcia
true, just checked the Raider’s depth chart & no Garcia. My bad. My point was that Matt Flynn is totally a reach. Obviously I’m not a GM, so what the f do I know. But honestly, Matt Flynn? What if Rodgers is gone for the year? Do you ride out 8 or 9 more weeks & just let Flynn screw the pooch that you called your season? I guess thats why you stated that Garcia would be an option.
I dont think the Vikes would lose too badly by putting in Sage Rosenfels for the rest of the year. The guy could manage our offense nicely & Peterson could go back to being the key to winning. Flynn on the other hand, I dont know if he could manage one quarter of a game, let alone the rest of the season. The Packs strength is Rodgers & his WR corps. Flynn would struggle. Wideouts tend to not be big “game deciding” players. You need a strong QB. I dont see your defense as any sort of strength, so its not like your D could hold down the fort for the rest of the year.
I totally understand where you are coming from
I must admit the Pack would struggle with Rodgers out, I’m guessing we would rely more on our non-existent running game. But I think I disagree with you on our defense, currently we are ranked 3rd in the league(granted we just got done playing the Lions and the Browns) and we seem to be hitting our stride. With Bigby back and Kampman getting more snaps from his usual three point stance I see good things from this unit. But with Flynn I’m guessing they would utilize the short pass game A LOT, like i would say 75-80 of his passes would be dip and dunks. Maybe one or two shots down the field per game, but lets hope for the Packers sake Rodgers stays on his feet and healthy the rest of the year.

Matt Flynn is totally a reach
I hope this isn’t in reference to his draft position. He was taken in the 7th round. There are no such things as reaches in the 7th round. In fact, I might actually consider him a steal that low.
I dont think the Vikes would lose too badly by putting in Sage Rosenfels for the rest of the year.
Whether thats true or not, I don’t think Sage would be the starter should Favre go down. Jackson has recieved all of the backup snaps in practice and in games. I think it was clear when they didn’t cut or trade him that Jackson is still #2.
Advice on next year's draft
Who, Mr. Thompson, do you see as an unheralded 1st round prospect in this next year’s draft? Any early risers and fallers?
I think there is a lot of O-Line talent next year...
I would say there is a possibility of 4-5 OT’s taken in the first round. Just to name a few: Russell Okung, OT (Oklahoma State); Bryan Bulaga, OT (Iowa); Bruce Campbell, OT (Maryland); Trent Williams, OT (Oklahoma)
It’s a little too early to analyze some risers and fallers, but I would say the biggest faller would be Sam Bradford (due to injury), I think he will be a steal if he falls past 10.

Mr. Thompson, aren’t many of those OT that you list too big for your scheme?
My understanding is that you look for smaller guys. The better to run in fear for their lives late in a game.
We try to look at big OL first regardless of skill
Our blocking scheme is most effective with large lineman who can move somewhat good, not smaller with excellent agility.

Ted Thompson,
You should go jump off a bridge, before Sunday!
Brett Favre is going to show you and 70,000 at Lambeau, not to mention the millions watching the game that you made the worst mistake in trading the Face of the Franchise and moving forward with an overrated arrogant unappreciative punk QB much like yourself!
Go #$%^ yourself!
I was waiting patiently for this
As I knew it was only a short time before it appeared.
Enough already
be polite, if you dont like someone just because of a business decision, even if a rival, then just stay off here.

More of a general NFL question then a Vikings/Pack rivalry one
Since Daunte Culpepper had his knee surgery, and before he was a part of the Vikings, we went through a long period of a QB carousel. The Packers experienced this in the 80’s and early 90’s until Favre became the QB and now Rodgers. After a great year last year, journeyman Collins has imploded and been replaced and having the same situation in San Fran and among others over the last 10 years who are experiencing the same. It seems most positions such as WR, RB, Defensive players and the like tend to have stability. Is it a lack of talent the last decade or two at QB, a rush to play rookies who might not be ready yet, lack of mentality or all of the above that is contributing to this or do you even see this or is it just bad luck for all teams involved?
"That is the craziest sonofabitch I ever saw, how many more like him do you think are up there?"
I think it's a mix of a lot of things
Personally I like drafting a QB and let him sit for a year or two, but that is not fool proof or the only way(look at Matt Ryan). I would say most of it is luck and lack of parity in NCAA… When you have QB’s in college tearing up teams like Southern Charleston Catholic Community College it doesn’t translate well to NFL well because the game is just so much faster. I also think teams rely too much on potential and measurements(JaMarcus Russell). I’m going to stop babbling and just say it’s more like a shot in the dark when drafting anyone.
