Around SBN: Interview With UMD Athletic Director, Dr. Debbie Yow

After the teams’ Oct. 5 matchup, there was a general impression that Green Bay erred by using too many standard pressure packages and not enough blitzes against Minnesota. Quarterback Brett Favre wasn’t sacked and produced a season-high 135.3 passer rating in the game, leading everyone to assume the Packers will elevate their blitz totals Sunday at Lambeau Field. But when you look closely at that first game, you get a better picture of why the Packers limited their extra pressure. Favre completed all nine of his attempts on plays when the Packers brought five or more pass-rushers, according to video analysis by ESPN Stats & Information. He completed 15 of 23 passes against four or fewer pass-rushers. So while the Packers must find a way to get more pressure on Favre, they’ll have to be wary that he gashed them when they did blitz in the first game.

or how about coming up with better blitz packages?

Blitzes used in game one were pathetic…throw two ILBs into the o-line…brilliant…I’m looking for some Chuck Woodson and Al Harris of the edge and a healthy does of Clay Matthews.

Another thing. Gonzalez pointed to the fact that Capers has never beaten Favre and implied that he won’t be able to make the necessary adjustments. However, given the proximity of the last game (and the simple fact that he now plays Favre twice a season), I think this is an entirely different scenario.

Blitzes used in game one were pathetic

Dom Capers. . .also pathetic.

Coincidence? Hardly.

Capers still hasn't beaten him

And the proximity doesn’t seem to make a difference.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't

They should call Capers 3-4 scheme the Kobayashi Maru defense.

So essentially…. Favre performs better under pressure, with limited time to make a decision.

Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!

Exactly

Because it couldn’t possibly be the simpler explanation, that there are fewer guys back in coverage.

I wonder

how many of the Packer’s blitz plays were designed to stop the run. I have to admit, I am impressed with how Favre audibles. I think a lot of his success throwing against the blitz comes from his ability to read it.

They were simply out coached first game

The Vikings got the plays in very quickly. Favre then would go through multiple snap counts and motion player or two to diagnose their defense. Then exploit it.

This isn’t something that Minnesota typically has done in the past so it caught the Slackers off guard. In addition, Green Bay was focused intently on the run. If they want to slow down our down field passing game then they need to leave some players back and let All Day embarrass them rather than Brett.
