Questions for a Rams fan?
What's good, Norsemen? I'm 3k from Turf Show Times, the SBNation site for the St. Louis Rams. I just wanted to stop by and open up a thread for our game on Sunday. What questions do you have leading up to the game? I know there's been a growing avalanche of hype leading up to the Green Bay game and this is kind of a let down, but it's still a regular season game.
What do you wish you understood going into this game? Granted, the St. Louis Rams are one of the most feared teams in the NFL and we have no faults in any aspect.... not exactly. Anyway, hit me up with any questions, misconceptions, and issues you might have.
This FanPost was created by a registered user of The Daily Norseman, and does not necessarily reflect the views of the staff of the site. However, since this is a community, that view is no less important.

What
happened to the team that was the greatest show on turf?
i remember that great super bowl where they stuffed the titans
but wat happened it seems the rams have fallen off the earth since then?
also, how is the rams defensive line?
do you have any big run stoppers or an end who get pressure on favre that we should be worried about?

What happened?
That was a decade ago, so a lot happened. Mainly we went from being the best team in the NFL to being a strong pick as the worst.
Our D-line is confusing. We’ve surprisingly gotten a good push against the run this year. As for any names to look out for, we just don’t have it yet. Chris Long is still a work in progress and Leonard Little is on the back end of his career.

Do You
have any hope for the future? What players besides SJax are you hoping to build a core around? What is going on with the ownership situation? How do you feel about the team not drafting Sanchez?

We have tons of hope
We have one of the youngest rosters in the league, so there’s a lot of pieces in place to build on. Our offensive line should be one of the better lines in the league by next season, when Jason Smith moves over to LT and we get rid of Alex Barron. Donnie Avery is still a burner at WR, but he needs a possession WR to take the heat off of him; we had that guy in Laurent Robinson, but he’s down for the year. Defensively, James Laurinaits is everything you want in a MLB. He’s a stud. We just don’t have the Dline to make things happen.

What is the number one thing we should be worried about heading into Sunday’s game?
"He didn’t call me or anything. It was an accident, but a lot of people would have called to see how someone is doing after they got hit in the head. Especially if they had to go on the DL." — Morneau on pitcher Ron Villone after an April 2005 beaning.

That the Rams play mistake free
The worst thing about being a Rams fan is the mistakes. While Tampa and Oakland and Carolina have lost games simply because they suck, the Rams are adding their suckiness to a level of sloppy play that is very hard to watch. Last weekend against the Niners, our defense allowed 14 points, our offense allowed 14 points, and our special teams allowed 7 points. Against the Pack, we lost two fumbles within our own 20 in the first quarter.
We don’t have the kind of talent that can overcome those things, but if we start playing cleaner football, we’re going to surprise some teams. Just not the Vikings.

Do you think the game against the Pack
might have been a competitive contest without those fumbles? I have to say the NFL video preview for the game gives me a chuckle as the narrator talks about how bad the Rams are at scoring as they show a receiver catching a TD pass against the Pack.
by Salty on Oct 10, 2009 10:01 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Definitely
The sad thing about the Rams is that at halftime, we’ve been in every game, unlike our 2008 campaign. It was 23-14 at the half, and that’s after the two fumbles. The real undoing was three long passing plays we allowed due to poor pass rush (which is saying something against the Pack who lead the league having allowed 20 sacks).

What do you feel are your teams strengths and how do you so them improving?
by PurpleJesus on Oct 9, 2009 11:07 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Our strengths have to be
Running, run defense and punting, or to be specific, Steven Jackson, James Laurinaitis and Donnie Jones.
I know most people wouldn’t include a special teams aspect, but as horrible as our passing game has been, Jones has been called on a TON. He has a huge impact on the game, because our offense stalls out so often and we rely on him to deliver poor field position. He got snubbed last year, but he should be in the Pro Bowl this year.

Yeah, it's cyclical
and we’re on the way out of our bottom, but it’s tough to deal right now. We’ve won 5 games total over the last two seasons, and the optimism in the preseason was evident. So it’s just tough to accept our reality.

Recently, Rush Limbaugh has shown interest in being part of a group that would own the Rams
The result of which was several individuals saying they wouldn’t play for a team where he was the owner. If he ends up purchasing the team (or being part of a group that does) how do you see that affecting the ability of the team to attract talent in the future?
When you go to somebody's house, you don't crap on their floor. Being a fan of one team does NOT give you license to be a dick to fans of another.
Corollary: When people are visiting your house and behaving themselves, them being a fan of a different team is NOT a reason for you to piss in their beer.

We've thrown this around at TST
It’s an interesting question that’s tough to answer. Rush being Rush, he brings out so much passion from fans regardless of whether you like him or hate him. He’s just so extreme that people either think this will be a great move or that it will ruin the team.
As for the specific effect it has on players, I think we have to put this in perspective. Remember Marge Schott? There’s always going to be an initial reaction and then a cooling down period. The Michael Vick saga is a good example. So while some players may come out and voice their opinions now, in the end, the money talks and ours talks as loudly as anybody elses.

I got a few questions!
What are the Rams biggest strengths?
What are their biggest weakness’s?
Will the Rams try to establish a run-game first, or will they try to exploit the Vikings mediocre pass-coverage?
What kind of game are you expecting to see? A blow-out, or can the Rams keep it within a couple possessions?
by chaosg on Oct 10, 2009 1:00 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Good q's
Strengths: Effort, Steven Jackson, special teams, James Laurinaitis & Will Witherspoon
Weaknesses: Lack of a pass rush, lack of a passing game (especially vertically), penalties, few takeaways
Definitely run first. Steven Jackson is too special to wait to use. And I don’t know if we could exploit any pass coverage.
Honestly, I see no reason not to expect the same mistakes from the Rams. We’ve had one opening kick fumbled and last week a 90-yard return was called back for holding, so they’re going to have to start early to really get the mistake ball rolling.

Why do the Rams fall apart in the second half (or quarter)?
Lack of depth? Lack of heart?
by virginia viking on Oct 10, 2009 7:02 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
We've been discussing that at TST
Personally, I think our coordinators have struggled to adapt to the game. Now to give them a bit of credit, they don’t exactly have a roster overflowing with talent. Nevertheless, to see our defense in the 1st quarter, you would think we’re a respectable team.

To follow up on the second half question:
Do you think it is more your defense spending so much time on the field because your offense has a hard time sustaining drives? Or is is purely coaching?
And my Uncle has never been convicted of anything, yet.

Both
We’re pretty thin on the line, so I think stamina and fatigue certainly plays a factor, but I think the playcalling has been a serious issue as well. We’ve seen some predictability issues that have hurt us as well as poor scripting against TEs.

will the rams go 0-16 and do they have a chance on sunday?
Do you consider the Vikings your toughest opponent so far? Give me your thoughts.

No, no
and yes.
We’ll win a couple by season’s end, but I’d be absolutely shocked if we find a way to beat you guys. And yes, I consider the Vikes our toughest opponent thus far. Along with Indy, you’re one of the two toughest teams we’ll face all season.

How do you think your coverage teams will fair against our returnmen?

I love these Q&A sessions!!!
Chester Taylor has been somewhat quiet so far this year thus I think he’s due for a big game.
As you probably know, screens and checkdowns are his forte and of course as a runner
he could start for a lot of teams.
do you think your OLB’s can control him? thanx

Welcome! Hey, I lived in St. Louis from 98-03. I remember that Superbowl season, and how absolutely no one cared about the Rams, even after they had gotten to 3-0 or 4-0, the local Fox station (channel 2?) had to buy up tickets. I guess I’m saying, at least back then, the fans were pretty fair weather. There was still a lot of excitement still when I left aver 02 season, but then again they were still playing well.
Just curious if things have returned to the way they were back in 98 — not a lot of people caring or even paying much attention to them. And also, wondering if that really poor sportswriter for Post Dispatch is still hacking away — Bernie M?

Steven Jackson
I know I"m late to the party.
By all accounts, Steven Jackson is your offense, and a great RB who can do it all. What’s he like off the field? We’re lucky that AD is not only fantastic, but you never hear anything bad about him – he spends extra time signing autographs, and as some player was quoted (I forget who): “He’s the type of person that people want to block for.”
Is Steven Jackson the same? Any reports of him wanting out of St. Louis b/c of the poor quality of the rest of the team?
Thanks!

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone
Sorry I didn’t get to all the comments. My wife is past her due date, and I’m deploying to Iraq soon, so I’m just a little busy. Thanks for not rubbing the Rams’ crappiness in my face. See you guys in the NFC Championship in a year and a quarter!
